a Brooklyn neighborhood, maybe best known for its high crime rate,

when he was ten years old.

Now, almost half a century later,

and a few months before his improbable return to the ring

against Jake Paul, at the age of 58,

he's come back for one of his occasional visits,

to connect with who he was in the beginning,

to survey corners he owned once upon a time.

[Mike] You know, Brownsville is a very poverty-stricken area.

- When I lived here, it was hell. - [police siren wailing]

I never had anything. We were always the poorest family.

My mother always borrowed food from people.

There's no heat in the building, no water, can't take a shit,

can't piss, can't flush the toilet.

It's some nasty shit.

This was an abandoned building. We used to play tag in this building.

He almost got me, but I ran into the building instead.

This is where I lived, here on the second floor,

me and my parents. The building looks beautiful now,

It looks so much better than when I lived here.

I never lived in nothing like this before.

Some things I did when I was young in Brownsville,

you just never forget what you're capable of doing.

It's always, every time you come outside, you're getting confronted with something.

You're always being confronted. I just learned you have to fight back.

And that pretty much shaped my personality in life.

This is where we had my first fight.

There's some guys that came to steal my birds.

And I said, "Please, give me my bird back, please."

He said, "Fuck you, you fat nigga," and ripped their head off.

And that was the first time I had a fight.

[indistinct chatter]

[Mike] I'm just Mike. I'm from Brownsville, Brooklyn.

I can never change that.

I learned totally from the sewer system of Brooklyn, New York.

Nothing you can tell me that can shake me.

I've heard about it all and I've seen it all.

- on your fight coming up. - Thank you.

- Always ready, right? - Well, I'll be ready that night.

Again, it's a different life.

How do you explain to somebody that doesn't know the life?

he was arrested more than 30 times before he turned 13.

Eventually, he was sent to the Tryon School,

a detention center for juvenile delinquents

in upstate New York,

where he found a path out of trouble. Boxing.

It was there that Tyson would meet

the man who'd become the most influential figure

in his young life,

legendary trainer Cus D'Amato.

[Cus] Keep the head down when you come up with the eights.

- Keep your head down. - [Mike] When I met Cus D'Amato,

I knew I was going to be champ of the world when I was 14.

He knew how to stimulate my mind.

"You could be the champion of the world at 18, 19,

but you don't even believe it."

And then I was like, "Really, you think so?"

He said, "I put my life on it."

[passenger] It's amazing that you two came together.

He said he summoned me.

Believe that shit?

[passenger] That's the universe?

That's what he told me, okay? I don't know if it's the fucking universe.

Forgive me, I'm sorry. It's...

- [passenger] What did he give to you? - [Mike] Confidence.

Confidence breeds success. Success breeds confidence.

Con... Confidence applied properly with superseded genius.

[Ice T] D'Amato became not only Tyson's trainer,

but his legal guardian,

adopting the kid from Brownsville and welcoming him into his family.

Man, you know, it's so funny to meet this guy, this old white guy.

[Ice T] D'Amato told Tyson he had the perfect makeup

to become the future heavyweight champion of the world.

[Mike] I want to achieve so much.

I'd rather die a short life of glory than a long life of obscurity.

And if he does everything that he's capable of doing,

I tell you, he may go down as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

heavyweight prodigy Mike Tyson.

[Ice T] Sure enough, when his career started,

Tyson was an unstoppable force,

winning his first 19 pro fights, all by knockout.

I went to Costa Rica for my first ayahuasca ceremony.

I wanted to uncover things about myself.

One of the craziest things was the vision I had

of me and Mike Tyson fighting.

As if it had already happened or something in the future,

or was going to happen, that's the feeling it gave me.

And it showed me the millions of kids watching

like, through their TVs and devices.

And it showed the butterfly effect of what that creates

for the sport of boxing.

...Jake Joseph Paul, will knock out and defeat Iron Mike Tyson.

So, the next day, I get in contact with Mike.

He's like, "Yeah, Jake, I love this idea." [chuckles] "This is awesome, man."

"This sounds great. We need to make this happen." [chuckles]

And that's the power of opening yourself to the energy of the universe,

but also enacting on those things.

[Ice T] Let's back up a few steps to really answer that question,

"How did we all get here?"

The answer starts for 27-year-old Jake Paul

and his brother Logan in suburban Ohio.

A very different origin point for sure from Mike Tyson's.

[Jake] Other than not getting good grades, I was just pretty normal.

And I just really loved sports.

And then my dad gave my brother and I a camera

so that we could record our football games

to see the footage back, to see how we could get better.

Me and my brother took that camera, started making YouTube videos

when we were like in our teens.

We were getting like 100 to 500 views, which was cool at the time.

Then Vine comes out.

The sneeze.

[Ice T] The popularity of Jake's videos took off with astounding success.

And almost overnight,

he became one of the most famous influencers in the world.

[Ice T] By the time he was 16, he had 5.3 million followers

and more than two billion views online.

[Ice T] From there, he took his following to YouTube...

And as his popularity and infamy continued to skyrocket,

living what seemed like a dream life in Los Angeles at the time.

But the truth was, more money had brought more problems.

And deep inside,

I was lost in it as any 21 or 22-year-old

with tens of millions of dollars and fame.

It wasn't until boxing

where I physically had to fight someone else

and I had to be sober. I had to focus.

It was like this giant wakeup call that boxing provided me.

I've kind of found my old self

that had been stripped away from me in Hollywood.

That's when I started to realize like, "Oh, shit, I caught the boxing bug."

And I was like, "This is all I'm going to do."
