The girl that I was back then is still a part of me today,

but I think that I have grown so much.

At the end of the day, everybody goes through something,

everybody grows,

and that's what I really feel like this song is to me.

There's a real star quality there,

but I want Edward to become an all-around superstar

so that he can truly compete in any sort of genre

I am a little intimidated going up

I chose the song because there's always

somebody that you wish you could have done more

to keep them in your life. Yes.

And when you look back and reflect, you think about

how you guys are both separate from each other now.

I used to sing this song all the time to my mom.

My mom is extremely supportive of me and my music career.

She created this YouTube channel called Shye's Diaries.

She loves herself. She never shares. [ Chuckling] What?

It was a series of skits with me and my siblings

where I was her little, like, star.

She made it because she was in the hospital,

and she was really worried

that she was not going to get much more time with me.

It was a way to show me when I grow up

if she wasn't around,

that this is how she saw me through her eyes.

And, luckily, I still got to keep my mother.

Your voice is so low and just unique.

And this song choice,

it just made it sound like it was your song.

It made me start to understand, like,

who you could be in the world if you made a record.

J. Paul, your instrument is impeccable.

Technically, you have no boundaries.

I feel like there's a melodic structure

that confines you in that song,

but J. Paul chose that song for really personal reasons.

It was the song that was his truth,

and I think that's really brave.
