[Valoze] I'm in Alabama this week, in Oxford.

It's a small town with lots of charm...

Found over two ounces of fentanyl.

[Valoze] ...but it's also a prime location

for major drug trafficking operations.

Fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin...

all off the streets of Oxford.

[Green speaking]

You're on the front lines right here...

[officer speaking]

When you're doing undercover work

things go wrong and you have to think on the fly.

[officer speaking]

This could be waiting for you.

This is the great unknown for law enforcement.

[officer] Hold on, boys.

[Valoze] There's no turning back now.

This is it. It's on.

[officer] Let's go! Go, go, go, go!

[officer shouts] Police Department search warrant!

[Valoze] In cities and towns all across America,

there are undercover operations keeping us all safe,

happening right now.

I ought to know.

That's me.

As a former federal agent, I took thousands of illegal guns

and millions of dollars in narcotics off the streets while working undercover.

Now, for the first time ever,

I'm taking you inside the invisible operations

happening in your own backyard...

This is a very dangerous situation.

...showing you the why and the how...

Right now, as you approach, tension is high.

I'm Lou Valoze and this is Operation Undercover.

[Green] I was on I-20. This car ended up passing me.

It was changing lanes without using a signal.

causing another vehicle to hit its brakes.

-[siren wailing] -[indistinct radio chatter]

I initiated my traffic stop,

[tires screeching]

[Green speaking]

And they're off to the races.

[sirens blaring]

[Green speaking]

There's 1,000 different things going through my head, like "What's he got?"

"What's he wanted for?"

"Is it dope related,

gun related, human trafficking related?"

You run into so many different things

most people could never imagine.

I was on patrol and Investigator Green came on the radio and said,

"Hey, this car is taking off."

So I immediately got off and started traveling north to parallel them.

As luck would have it, they came back eastbound, which was directly towards me.

[Green] We were reaching speeds from 100 to 110 miles an hour.

Those speeds get extremely dangerous at times.

[engine roaring]

You've got all these citizens on the roadway.

That's just something that could turn out disastrous.

There's a pursuit headed this way.

So I started getting civilian traffic out of the intersection

'cause more than anything we just wanna be safe,

make sure no accidents are caused.

Come on, Go.

Here he comes.

[speaking over radio] He turned. Go, he turned.

[dramatic music playing]

-[engine revving] -[siren wailing]

[Wilson] When I caught up to Green and the suspect vehicle,

I kind of paralleled them.

I drove up beside the suspect vehicle.

I could see four occupants, for sure, inside of the vehicle.

And I saw in the back seat, passenger side,

the gentleman that was sitting there.

I could see something silver in his hands.

That could be a gun.

So I backed off.

[Green] The state had joined in at this time.

They were able to create a box-in maneuver on this individual

and get it to slow down.

But with that comes the danger

of a subject being able to shoot out the side window,

or the front window,

right into the back of a patrol unit,

which has happened before.

But luckily, upon being boxed in, the individual finally gave up.

-[tires screeching] -[siren blaring]

[officer speaking]

[sirens blaring]

[Wilson] I looked and I see a female sitting in the back seat.

And she was holding an infant.

Being a dad, I can't help but think of my little girl.

And you think about all the possibilities of what could have happened.

It's not that child's fault that these adults made this decision.

[baby crying]

[Wilson] When you see things like that, sure, yeah, it gets you fired up.

It makes you upset.

-[woman sobbing] -[Wilson] You just ran with a [bleep] baby in the car, guy.

It would be in your best interest to shut the [bleep] up right now.

They were obviously running for a reason.

[Green] The front passenger,

he had been convicted with a felony, prior.

We start a search of the vehicle.

We located an AR-15 style pistol.

[Green speaking]

And then a Cobra FS 380 pistol.

So there was weed in his door.

We knew at that point that these suspects were not up to any good

We ended up with felony charges for weapons violations

and narcotics.

Have a seat.

[Green] We at Oxford PD try and really hammer

the interstate system

to cut down on large amounts of narcotics,

weapons smuggling, human smuggling.

This is exactly what Oxford PD is trying to keep out of our city

and off these highways.

[Valoze] Interstate-20 has become a major artery for drug trafficking.

Mexican cartels are using Atlanta as their hub

to then distribute all of their narcotics...

fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin,

to all the smaller cities in the Southeast.

Right now, I'm on my way to Oxford, Alabama,

a small city that sits right on I-20,

about halfway in between Atlanta and Birmingham.

And we're gonna see what the Oxford Police Department is doing

to defend this city.

-[Valoze] Chief. -[Partridge] It's a pleasure to meet you.

-[Valoze] Great to meet you. -Come inside.

We'll give you a tour of the real time crime center

and let you see what we're doing here.

[Valoze] Sounds good.

[Partridge] One of the biggest things

that we have running through our region's interstate

runs through the center of the city,

And as I tell some people,

if they knew what went up and down that interstate every night, they wouldn't

-sleep very well. -[Valoze chuckles]

[Young] We've got multiple cameras throughout the city,

along with license plate readers, a little over 400 camera views.

We can live view the body cams as well.

Wow.

[Valoze] So if something happens in the city,

-you know about it. -[Young] That's correct.

So in order to combat those things

of people getting off the interstate to do nefarious things,

we not only utilize the real time crime center to help solve those cases,

but we also have what we call our Special Investigations Unit,

and they actually fight the drug problem,

the trafficking problem, the gun problem and so forth on the street.

[Pesnell] Right here is gonna be our drug vault.

We've got a plethora of...

pretty much if you can imagine it, it's in here.

You know everything from meth to the suspected fentanyl.

-All this is nothing but narcotics. -[Valoze] Pills...

-In all cases waiting for adjudication? -Yes.

[Valoze] Wow. That's a lot of drugs.

[Pesnell] I had family members that got involved in the drug trade,

and I watched their life just basically tank.

To see how hard drugs flooded these communities now,

and everybody's got it...

it's scary bringing up children in this world.

If it happened that quickly, within a timeframe of basically 15 years,

what's it gonna be like in the next 15?

So this whole entire wall...

every one of these is a firearm.

All crime guns.

All off the streets of Oxford.

That's... that's a lot of guns. [exhales]

This is typical of what you're getting off the street here?

Yes, sir.

So when you do an affidavit, get a search warrant, and then it's up to you guys

to stack up and enter that door.

And you never know. This could be waiting for you...

-Sure. -...behind that door.

[Pesnell] Yes, sir.

The mission of SIU, the Special Investigations Unit

is to take care of our communities first.

We know we can't win the war on drugs,

but if we can push them out of our communities, and out of our cities

then we've... we've won that battle.

To this day, the Special Investigations Unit has been able to get

over a million dollars worth of drugs off the street.

We have one of the greatest group of guys right now.

They want to build these cases,

they want to pursue these criminals.

You have to have the drive.

Can you guys tell me what's on the agenda for this week?

We've developed a guy out west on the western side of our city that's dealing in

what we believe to be at least ounce amounts of methamphetamine.

We're going to try to line up a buy with him,

and we've got a guy up north that's dealing large amounts of fentanyl,

and we all know how potent that is.

So we've got a buy lined up for him also.

[Miller] Motels are a big problem for this area

right off the interstate,

because I-20 runs right in between

Atlanta and Birmingham.

So there's a ton of drugs

trafficked on it every day.

[Pesnell] We've got some motels in our area that we have a lot of issues with.

[Miller] Cheaper motels, basically.

-[Valoze] That's where the crime's happening? -[Miller] Yeah.

[Pesnell] We're gonna do a motel detail

where we take pretty much one of our CIs, one of our informants.

We're gonna interject them into the motel scene,

see if they can drum up some kind of business.

Great.

We have what we refer to as confidential informants

in the communities around here.

The goal in using them is to set up a buy

on a decent target that we have in this area,

build that case, lock that case down,

flip him if he will,

then move on to the next person.

It's kind of like a fishing expedition.

You got to get the bait fish,

you got to get them in the water to catch the bigger fish.

[Valoze] Most Friday and Saturday nights,

these motels near the interstate

fill up with bad guys hiding amongst the tourists.

And this weekend is no different.

[Pesnell speaking]

[Valoze] The CI's gonna be wired,

and you're gonna be monitoring in real time?

[Pesnell speaking]

[Valoze] So the undercover officers are taking the lead in this operation.

I'm following behind with Sergeant Pesnell,

in my car, so that we can better blend in.

[JP] The informant we're going to use tonight.

has been an informant for several years.

They know the gang, they know the lingo.

They know everybody and everybody knows them.

So this is a very valuable informant that we have.

[Valoze] She's over there now.

-[Pesnell] Yeah. -[Valoze] All right.

[JP] The utilization of a CI,

it makes our job way easier.

They're basically able to go in to somewhere we're not.

[JP speaking]

[CI] Mmm-hmm.

[JP speaking]

[CI speaking]

[JP speaking]

[Pesnell] So this is the device that we're real time monitoring

the audio, the video as well as GPS location of the confidential informant.

[JP] Even though this informant knows this target

there's always that chance

that there could be somebody else there that the informant doesn't know,

and it could just throw the whole vibe off.

[Valoze] It's very nerve-wracking when you send an informant in,

even if they've been there 15 times before.

You never know when the target could flip.

He could be under the influence of drugs, and this could go bad.

[JP] That's it. On our left,

right there.

But we have to go up past it, and turn around and come back.

So we have to be close enough to react in case something goes wrong.

But not so close that we look suspicious.

It's good right here.

[Pesnell] We'll just pull over here and black out.

[car door slams]

[JP] So the informant just got out of their vehicle

and is approaching the target run right now.

[indistinct conversation]

[Pesnell speaking]

[informant audio breaking up]

[JP speaking]

[Pesnell] Negative. I think it went completely down.

[Valoze] We've lost our feed.

The undercover transmitting device, that the informant has.

[JP] So we don't have radio or wire on the Charlie right now.

[Valoze] It's a worst-case scenario.

This is when you start tensing up

[JP speaking]

[Valoze] They're ultimately responsible

for this informant's safety, and right now we don't know what's going on in there.

This is a very dangerous situation.

[dramatic music playing]

[JP speaking]

[Valoze] Right now we have no comms with the informant.

We have no idea what's going on in there.

So this is one of those areas in law enforcement

when you're doing undercover work.

Things go wrong and you have to think on the fly.

[JP speaking]

[Pesnell speaking]

[JP speaking]

So the officers can see the CI's car in the motel parking lot.

That's a good sign.

But until we get her out of that room,

we have no idea if she's safe.

[Valoze] Is that the informant's car right there with the one headlight?

[Pesnell speaking]

[JP speaking]

[woman speaking indistinctly on phone]

[JP speaking]

[Valoze] So we've had a successful undercover deal.

But as happens, more often than not, things go wrong.

The device went out.

We couldn't get the feed.

But it will still all be recorded.

And everybody's out. Everybody's safe.

That's about a worst-case scenario

when you have an informant inside of a hotel room

and you don't have any eyes and ears,

you don't know what's going on.

[JP] Luckily, it was a successful purchase.

-That's not a lot, but now we can go back... -[Valoze] Mmm-hmm.

...and start working up the case on that target

to see if we can purchase more.

This again just goes to illustrate how you guys work these cases

-using these CIs. -[Pesnell] Yes, sir.

You know, you start small, you make some more buys,

you get into another dealer here in Oxford area,

and flip these criminals, one by one, to get from the drug users

to the big time suppliers.

[Pesnell] Keep chipping away.

That's it.

[Pesnell] So we've got this confidential informant we're working right now.

She's a low level dealer.

Can you tell me specifically how you cultivated

this confidential informant for this particular case?

[Pesnell] We got a good tip in this case

-that a person was buying from someone in this area. -[Valoze] Okay.

[Pesnell speaking]

[radio beeping]

Yeah, one of the investigators saw the truck

found probable cause, pulled it over.

[Pesnell] We found a bulge.

Asked about it, and ultimately yielded the methamphetamine.

You caught her with trafficking amounts of meth.

So she's... she's facing felony charges.

That's the highest drug charge

that you can catch in the state of Alabama.

[Valoze] So you flipped this low level drug dealer.

Now she's gonna help you build a case against her supplier.

-The bigger fish. -Yeah, I would say he's probably

of the biggest meth dealers in this city.

This guy is located dead between Interstate 20 and Highway 78.

Complete access, two exits on each side.

[Valoze] So if he's moving product,

he can either have people come to him coming in on either highway,

he can head west, he can head east,

I mean, he's located strategically for a drug dealer.

[Pesnell] That's exactly correct, and we're looking to do a purchase

with a confidential informant this week.

And that's gonna gather intelligence for you guys.

It's also gonna gather probable cause

to write up an affidavit, get a search warrant

and hopefully put an end to this drug dealer.

-[Pesnell] Correct. -Absolutely.

[Pesnell] So we're gonna meet the informant at the airport.

It's pretty well vacant throughout the week,

so we don't have to worry about a lot of people rolling up on us

when we're briefing these informants, you know,

trying to figure out what they can do, what they're going in...

you know, the whole nine yards of that.

[Valoze] You know, you can never fully control an undercover deal, right?

-[Pesnell] Right. -But you want to control as many variables as you can.

This abandoned airport is a good call.

'Cause we do not want to blow the CI's cover

and let anybody see her with the police.

[Valoze] That's the informant over there.

Those are your guys who are talking to her.

They search her and they document that search that, you know,

-she didn't have any, you know, any dope or anything... -[Pesnell] Yeah.

...on her person.

That's for legal reasons.

[CI] Okay.

[Pesnell] It looks like they've pretty much concluded

the brief and everything.

We're on the move.

[intense music playing]

We'll follow them in pretty close

until we get close to the target location,

and we'll kind of back off. That way,

you know, we... we don't run into spooking the target or anything like that.

[Valoze] So is the target tied to this house or is he just...

[Pesnell] Yes, this is gonna be his property where he lays his head at night.

This is probably as close as I feel comfortable parking,

and, basically, what we're gonna do is stand by and monitor the wire,

and make sure everything... you know, we don't hear any code words

for danger or anything like that.

[Valoze] And she's been in this house before?

-[Pesnell] Yeah. -[Valoze] She's made buys before...

-[Pesnell] Yes. -Was there any any red flags,

any kind of security concerns?

We're in the deep south, so...

You know, the chance of him having guns and stuff like that

is very, very high.

I mean, the the tools of the trade, you know, to protect his... his dope.

-But, you know, our guns... -We're close enough.

If we needed to go, you know, and pretty much extract the CI,

we could do so.

The last thing you want to do is burn your... your CI.

[Pesnell] Okay, they're about to pull into the target location now.

[knock on door]

[CI chuckles]

[suspect] I'm hiding.

-[CI speaking] -[suspect laughs]

[CI speaking]

[Pesnell] It's a little bit of wild video, but like even with this,

we're getting intel of, like, what's inside the... the residence,

like what obstacles are we gonna face, you know,

if we do actually make entry into here.

[Valoze] And that's important information.

Like, which way the door swings, you know, in or out, left or right.

[Pesnell] Absolutely. I can see it's an inward swinging wooden door.

So if I put my breachers up, I know what they need to have with them to make entry.

Well, she sounds very comfortable, very relaxed.

The conversation's flowing,

you know, she obviously knows this guy,

but you know, up to this point, she's doing a great job.

-Yeah, he's real comfortable with her. -[Pesnell] Mmm-hmm.

[Valoze] Bingo! That's definitely enough for probable cause.

[Valoze] There's the video you need right there.

Weighing out the meth.

-[CI] Let's see. -[suspect] I do. Uh...

[suspect] I always make more...

And this is usually the point where, as law enforcement

you want your CI to get out of that house.

-[Pesnell] Yes, this is-- -Let's wrap it up.

I can tell he's pretty paranoid with law enforcement in general.

Because he's talking about the police has been on the power lines,

and this that and other which obviously, is more of a reason

for us to err on the side of caution as we're planning this search warrant.

Paranoia kind of goes hand in hand with drug dealing.

-[Valoze] Right? -[Pesnell] Yes, yes.

It looks like the CI is back in vehicle.

Hopefully about to pull off now.

[Valoze] So, with the informant safely out,

the officers need to immediately take possession of the drugs,

to establish chain of custody.

[JP speaking]

Good deal. This stuff looks clean.

Well, if he's telling her he's got plenty more,

you're dealing with a pretty major dealer at that point.

Yeah, that's great intel from the CI right there. Great job.

If he's telling her the truth, he should be sitting on some weight.

[Pesnell] Yeah, fingers crossed he's still got it when we go.

Let's go weigh it.

We've got over two ounces of methamphetamine.

What's the next step?

We have the probable cause now to do a search warrant.

So, hopes are, within the next day or two,

that he's still got plenty left

and you all are gonna go in there and get it.

-And then we'll get it done. -All right.

The Oxford PD has another target in their sights this week.

A mid-level dealer on the north side of town.

[Pesnell] He was dealing ounce quantities of meth,

bouncing around a lot, like we'd find this house, that house.

We never really could pin him down enough

to do a search warrant or anything like that.

This guy has kind of been an on-again, off-again,

deal with us, because he'll kind of pop-up,

and he just goes missing for a little while.

Right now he's popped back on radar.

We've got him at the house now he seems to have been at for a while,

but now he's dealing with ounce quantities of fentanyl.

An ounce of fentanyl could kill thousands of people.

Fentanyl is in a whole nother category. Isn't it?

[Pesnell] Stupid lethal.

So we really want to try to get this guy off the street.

[Pesnell] So if you'll look as we do our ride by,

this is the target location right here.

We've been here before.

We've done a buy from the house using a confidential informant.

We got the probable cause we needed to get the search warrant for the house.

[CI] Oh, for real?

We're gonna set up one more buy to show the continuity of the CI.

To kind of say, "Hey, look, he didn't stop because you're about to get hit."

Protecting the CI is paramount.

[Valoze] If the CI goes off the grid right before the target is arrested,

it's gonna look incredibly suspicious.

And it's gonna risk revealing him as a police informant.

So to be sure he's not made, they've arranged one more controlled buy.

This buy is going down at a gas station,

that's located very close to the target's house.

It's not uncommon for a target to wanna do these deals

in a public place, so it doesn't lead the police to his residence.

[Pesnell] We're looking at the location the target gave the CI.

I believe that's gonna be the target.

[both laugh]

[Pesnell] He's pretty good about talking smack with these guys.

So nothing seems to be out of the ordinary,

other than the fact he's sitting in the guy's car

and we've got to be ready to go if they start to pull off.

[CI speaking]

[Pesnell] Sounds like counting cash.

[CI speaking]

[Valoze] Great evidentiary value right there.

A full, clear shot of the dope.

Great job by the CI right there.

[CI speaking]

[Pesnell] Sounds like they're talking about guns.

[Valoze] A little gun talk right there.

This is a convicted felon, correct?

[Pesnell] Absolutely. Yeah. He knows he can't have that stuff.

[CI] You still got that big ass, ugly ass pistol?

-[Valoze] Wow. Look at that. -[CI speaking]

-[Pesnell] Freakin' GLOCK. -[Valoze] Yep, it sure does.

You know, if he needs a weapon, it's readily available right there.

[Pesnell] It was right there on the side.

[Valoze] This is a drug dealer,

and a convicted felon who's not supposed to have a gun.

And he just brandished the firearm during a drug transaction.

That kind of changes the game.

[CI] All right, bro.

[Pesnell] We know right now he's got the means to do something bad if he wanted to.

He's got some violent past charges.

That always plays a huge factor in how we plan these operations.

So this is a major operation right here in Oxford.

Yes. This is one of the biggest ones we've got going on.

[Valoze] So it's my understanding that you guys

are splitting this operation into two parts,

that are gonna happen at the same time.

We're gonna have pretty much surveillance sit on the house,

wait till he leaves, traffic stop him to get him away from the house,

so we can execute the search warrant,

and preserve anything that might be inside.

I'm gonna go to the crime center to the EMACC,

and I'm gonna be watching you guys live.

More than anything I just want you guys to be safe.

So be safe, man.

-[officer 1] All right. Appreciate it. -[officer 2] Sounds good.

All right, we have two live feeds going here from two different units.

But neither of them can get going until the target leaves his house.

[officer over radio]

[Valoze] All right, the suspect is on the go

and Sergeant Pesnell is tailing him,

and he's looking for an opportunity to safely pull him over.

[police siren wails]

So it looks like we have a vehicle stopped with the suspect.

Now we know how a roadside stop

can turn into a full-speed chase in no time flat.

So if this guy decides it's time to run, the officers have to be ready.

Looks like they're approaching the suspect's vehicle.

Suspect's in the passenger front side.

[Pesnell speaking]

[Valoze] And meanwhile, we have a search warrant

about to be served at the suspect's house.

The search warrant team is at the front door, knocking and announcing.

[knocking at door]

[Valoze] So they've waited a reasonable time.

And here they go.

Police! Police! Get on the floor!

[Valoze] So the entry team is gonna clear the house and make sure it's safe.

[officer] Coming up!

[Valoze] This is the great unknown for law enforcement.

You enter a house, but you don't know who's hiding behind walls,

who's hiding in closets.

[officer speaking]

-[officer 1] Police! -[officer 2] Dogs. Dogs. Dogs.

[Valoze] You don't know if there's dogs that are loose.

If there's kids in that house.

You have to be aggressive, but you also have to be careful.

Meanwhile, they're asking the suspect

to step out of the vehicle right now.

He is a violent, convicted felon,

who's had a couple encounters with law enforcement

while he was armed already.

[Pesnell] Step out with me real quick.

He just reached in his back hip.

[Pesnell speaking]

[Valoze] That was a scary situation right there.

You don't know if he's pulling up his pants

or if he's reaching for a gun.

But I see the officer was alert,

and got risk control right away.

Well done by the officer.

The suspect is in custody.

-[officer 1] That side is clear. -[officer 2] Clear!

Clear.

It looks like the house is secure.

Now they will be searching for anything listed in that affidavit

on the search warrant.

[Pesnell speaking]

[cell phone vibrating]

[Miller] Hey.

Okay, how much was it?

Good deal and good job.

[Valoze] Wow.

Probably around 15,00 to 20,000 in cash.

And that information will be used by the officers

who are interviewing the suspect, to try and see

if this guy might want to cooperate.

[Miller] Yes, if we can get the guy that's supplying him...

I mean, if he's got two ounces then just, you know,

imagine what the guy supplying him has got.

[Pesnell speaking]

[Pesnell speaking]

[Valoze] If he's not willing to cooperate,

with that amount of drugs and cash that has been found at his house,

he's gonna find himself sitting in prison cell.

[Pesnell speaking]

[Valoze] We're gonna see what's gonna happen.

He might wanna eat his charges, take a chance,

and not cooperate with the officers.

There's never a guarantee.

[Valoze] It's 5:00 a.m. and the search warrant has just been granted

for the meth dealer who sold two ounces to the informant.

And he said he's got plenty more.

Right now, the team is gearing up for the raid,

to take this suspect into custody.

Early morning is the best time to strike

because you want to catch the target off guard.

Knowing that this dude's selling so much,

he's not gonna sit on this forever.

We know that we really get to move.

It's very nerve-wracking.

You don't know where all the dangers are located

or what could possibly happen.

I still get as anxious to this day

as I did the very first bust I ever did.

All right. So this morning we're gonna execute a search warrant at [bleep].

So basically, this is generated off of some buys we've done with the CI

from the target that lives at this location.

The CI was able to give us some pretty awesome intel.

Talking to the CI, we're trying to gather any intel we may not have.

Like, have you ever seen guns on the property?

He might be a little crazy. He's known to be armed.

I can see huge officer safety issues.

You know, stuff that we definitely have to take seriously

when we're planning these operations.

The house that he's gonna be in is not very large.

So basically, we're gonna pull in,

we'll file out, file up to the door, do our thing.

The outside door, the hinges are on the right side,

so we'll just kind of base our stack off of that.

We're gonna bang the exterior part of the house.

We'll do our initial form and entry,

lock it down, see what we've got.

[officer speaking]

[Pesnell] All right, let's start loading up.

The target is on a very rough road, a very rural neighborhood.

He's also up a hill to the point where you

almost have to have full four-wheel drive the whole way.

It becomes a logistical nightmare.

And so we're gonna take the BearCat.

We're gonna take the armored vehicle.

[tense music playing]

This is the great unknown for law enforcement.

When you're entering a suspect's house.

[Pesnell] All right, this is it.

[over radio]

[Valoze] There's a BearCat with the entry team inside.

We're seconds away from hitting this house.

We're rolling up with all the Oxford PD's tactical units right now

to the home of our target,

where we're gonna execute s search warrant.

[Valoze] We don't know if this guy's armed,

we don't know who else is gonna be in the house.

For the entry team, you don't know what's around every corner.

That's why tensions are running high right now.

The BearCat can't get close enough to the house right now

because of all those cars parked out front.

This is a dangerous situation for the team.

Operations don't always go as planned,

and this is a prime example of that.

Here comes the suspect.

They got the suspect in cuffs taking him out.

[Valoze] It looks like we've got a firearm right here.

It was taken off the suspect.

Entry is done and everything went well.

Suspect in custody.

Now you transition into the search mode.

-[Pesnell] Yes. -And see what we come up with, what's happening.

-Absolutely. -All right.

[Valoze] There's another federal charge.

[Valoze] Everything you're finding in this house

is indicative of a pretty major drug dealer, right?

We've got large amounts of methamphetamine there, which is his supply.

You've got smaller amounts

that are packaged for sale in hideaway cans, firearms.

[JP speaking]

Is that a blasting cap?

[JP speaking]

[Valoze] That's an explosive device.

Possession of that device is a separate federal felony.

So after everything we found in the house,

it was kind of a proud moment for us

as a police department and a unit,

that we were able to get that stuff out of that area of the city.

[JP] We found what we call a ledger in the target's house

that had five or six names on it.

[JP] The very first name on the list, I knew exactly who it was.

This person is a large distributor

of not only methamphetamine, but fentanyl.

[JP speaking]

[Pesnell] I'm recognizing the names on the ledger.

And I'm going, "How in the world

does this guy know these people?"

He's a big fish in this area.

But the fact that he knows bigger fish

in our area, that we can still get to, it is paramount.

So now we're able to branch this off and try and do additional buys

from the new intel we have, and kind of bring this all together.

[Pesnell] When I know we've taken a legitimate dealer off the street,

that's hurting these families and selling dope to everybody,

you feel like you're making a difference.

You know, you feel like you're putting a dent in something.

And as long as we're doing that, it helps me sleep better at night.

[Valoze] We've been in Oxford, Alabama for just one week.

We've seen an initial sting operation

at a motel off Highway 20...

Nine ball, uh, eight ball of methamphetamine.

...setting the stage for a bigger operation now under way.

-Keep chipping away. -That's it.

A major fentanyl case, leading to the arrest of a target.

And a large-scale search warrant

yielding guns, drugs and a ledger...

...that will help the Oxford PD make their streets even safer.

The Oxford PD is using the information

gathered in the hotel sting operation,

to build more cases against bigger suppliers.

The suspect from the vehicle stop, and home search warrant,

that turned up a large amount of fentanyl,

has decided not to cooperate

and has pled guilty to drug distribution.

He is currently awaiting his next court date.

The suspect from the methamphetamine bust

is facing federal drug trafficking, and weapons charges.

His case is the subject of a grand jury investigation.

The ledger that was recovered is currently being used

in active investigations by Oxford, PD,

to hopefully hook a bigger fish.
