of Ed Sheeran's sold out shows at London's
legendary Wembley Stadium today.

Not only is he the biggest selling artist
of last year,

but now playing three nights
at the UK's biggest venue.

Today I'm playing Wembley Stadium.

How does that feel saying that out loud?

It feels good, you know.

SHEERAN: This is my first ever
headline stadium show.

And it was never
my dream.

When you live in Britain
and you play music,

especially when you play acoustic guitar
and you start off in a pub circuit,

your dreams don't really stretch that far.

Your dreams, like my dream,
was to play Shepherd's Bush Empire,

which is 1,500 capacity.

And that was the ultimate.

(CROWD CHEERING)

The Shepherd's Bush Empire,
I've been waiting to do this gig for years.

I'm very happy to be here.

I never aspired to play Wembley
until last year.

And it was my birthday wish
when I cut my cake.

Can I tell you a little secret?

Every wish I've made in the last five years
has come true.

Not to do three, just to do one.

But, yeah,
you always have to push the needle.

-MAN: Why have you called it that?
-'Cause we keep moving them.

SHEERAN: The conversation for booking
the Wembley shows

happened exactly a year ago.

You know, they were booked,
and that was fine.

And then they sold, and then that was great.

And then they were always six months away.

It's like, it's fine. It's six months away.

And then last week,

we were sitting in the dressing room
and my tour manager came in

and was like
"We need to have a talk about Wembley."

It'll be all right for you.

MAN: How's it gonna be all right for me?

You don't have to fucking play.

-I'm shitting myself.
-MAN: You'll be fine.

It's just that you've done big events before.
I've never played to this many people.

Tonight is the nerve wracking one.
Tonight's the, "Can he do it?"

It all, my team and me.

-MAN: So how're you feeling, Ed?
-I feel good.

I feel happy.

I feel excited.

Is that the queue? Jesus.

I guess they are 87,000 people though.

Where do they park?

SHEERAN: I think this is the most important
milestone so far.

I know a lot of people would look at awards,

but this is real people,
who are buying real tickets to sit on seats

with 80,000 other people for three nights
to come and watch me play.

Sometimes you play a venue,
and they'll have people coming up,

and you'll know like,
five out of the 20 people playing.

You'll be like, "Oh, yeah, I've heard of them..."

But here, all of them are in my iPod.

And to join the people on the list is a pretty,

both humbling and scary experience.

I'll be expecting Ashton Kutcher to run out
and be like, "I got you."

I'm all cocky and confident
up until it actually happens.

When I booked it,
they told me I could do one.

And when we did the press photos for it,
I held up three fingers,

'cause I was like,
"No, we're gonna book three."

MAN: When the countdown goes off,
you start walking.

All right?

(MAN LAUGHS)

Hey, it's exactly the same as an arena,
there's just a few more people.

And the screaming's gonna be painful.

And now it's kind of come to it,
and reality's hit.

And you're like, "Jesus, I have to play to
240,000 people over three days."

Yeah, it's spinning me out a little bit.

a thing,

I didn't believe him.

And then he was like,

And I was like, "No."

And then it was all sold out, and I was like,

"Jesus. He's really gonna do it."

It's doable.

CAMP: We never quite thought
we'd get to this stage.

We've played here, multi-artist bills,
so two or three songs,

but I think it's different to try
and hold it for a whole set.

I think almost every one of us in the team,
it's the pinnacle of our careers.

It really is the biggest show
any of us have ever done.

Primarily, it's the end of a long campaign.
So it's...

We've been working on it
for the last two years.

CAMP: It's exciting to see this journey,

how far it's gone, to suddenly be here,

in probably the shortest amount of time
anyone's ever done it.

I've seen him do gigs where there's been
100 people in there.

And he unplugged,
went into the middle of the room

and played acoustically.

Everyone could hear him. It was that small.

And now it's 77,000
and there's three of them.

So, it's amazing.

SHEERAN: They showed me my staging
in the O2 Arena.

That is your current production.

Show me the other show.

The other show is...

So these screens will help.

And it was like, that was the O2 Arena
and that was Wembley.

So we basically took that stage
and timesed it by 15.

-It's getting real. It's getting real.

We went from having an entire crew
of like 30 people on the road

and we were touring with five trucks.

And suddenly the responsibility has gone
to having 150 people

and have 44 trucks.

DAWKINS: It's just got bigger.

It's still the same little man,
with a guitar there. (LAUGHS)

CUMMINGS: In London, there's like,
landmark gigs that you do.

First one is like, "Oh, have you ever done
the Shepherd's Bush?"

And then it's, "Have you done Brixton."

Then it's O2.

And then it's Wembley.

And at every single stage,
we were like, "You're gonna need a band."

But he was so busy, he never had time
to train up a band

and it got to the stage where he's just like,

"No, I'm more comfortable
just doing it myself."

And it worked.

So he was like,
"Okay, let's try it in a stadium."

CAMP: No solo artist at all
has played Wembley.

We thought it was Elton, but apparently not.
He had a band.

The way that Ed does things live on stage,
it works, it's great.

Why pollute it with a band?

The guy is raw talent.

Right there, raw talent.

-MAN: How you feeling, Ed?
-Great.

CUMMINGS: He said to me that he didn't feel
nervous, but everybody kept saying,

"Are you nervous? Are you nervous?"

And then he was like, "Yeah, now I am."

But the way he copes with it,
I don't think he's...

a couple of times.

MAN: Yeah. So overall how do you find Ed?
What's he like to work with?

I mean, is he a douchebag?

I have a couple of things to say,
couple of things.

The first thing, I got my first ever complaint
at a concert the other day,

first ever complaint in my life.

We were playing in Winnipeg in Canada.

And I finished up the show,

and my tour manager
came up to me and said,

"There's a couple who complained.
They would like their money back."

And I said, "What was the complaint?"

And they said,
"Well, they feel like they were short-changed

"because they think you played
with a backing track

"and, or, a band they couldn't see
for the whole concert."

Now, Wembley, before we get into the show,

this thing at my feet here
is called a loop station.

Everything you hear tonight is live.

Everything you hear tonight
comes from this guitar

and this microphone and this microphone.

Everything is live looped.
Everything is live built.

Everything is live.
I just wanna stress that point.

The other one,

the other point I would like to make...

Everyone in this stadium is facing forward,
which is a good thing.

No one is really looking to the side of them.

So, you cannot feel self-conscious
about dancing like an idiot.

My one rule about concerts is,

if it does not harm anyone else,
do what you want, just have fun.

This is a five year journey for us now.

And we've been touring
for years and years and years.

This gig is definitely a culmination
of a lot of shows.

CALEY: He told me once that James Morrison
did 300-and-something gigs in a year.

He's like, "I'm gonna do that next year.
I can beat that easy."

And it's been four and a half years later,

I don't know if he's had more than a week off.

MAN: So where have you been, Ed?

So this is a globe.

And I'm not actually very good at geography,
so I don't really know where everywhere is.

Leading up to this show,
we started off in Europe.

That was the England, all of that.

(AUDIENCE CHEERING)

And then went to the Middle East.

We are in Dubai.
We are about to play for a lot of people.

Played a show, went to a house party,
then a club.

We're in Qatar.
This hotel room is bigger than my flat.

Apparently it's illegal to drink here,
but they've given us that.

Come into the bedroom.

This is where the magic happens.

When they told me I was playing India,

I thought it would be like,
just a load of English people buying tickets.

I didn't think I was big in India.

I am.

Then all of Asia.

China.

Korea, Japan.

Philippines. Malaysia.
All the way down there. That's quite cool.

We're walking out this other exit

that we could have walked out of.

And I'm like, "Well, why didn't you

I hate jet lag.
Was up till 10:00 AM, slept till 3:00.

Went to the venue, did promo,
played the show.

I've always been a nomad.
I've always loved touring, and travelling,

and playing shows in different places
and meeting people.

And I've finally got to the point where
I would like to be at home.

staying next door, so she

popped in with a bottle of tequila
and a load of people. Yeah.

Kind of wish I hadn't done that now.

Overall the show for me, it was...

Well, the loop pedal fucked up
on the last two songs.

I broke a string.

And then I broke a string on the spare guitar.

So, Trev, my guitar tech,
was trying to fix the pedal

and re-string the guitar for me to play.

DAWKINS: When he breaks a string,
that's normally a sign of nerves.

I think he did four strings in one song once.
So that was quite impressive.

Yeah.

It's a weird thing when everything builds up
to such a climactic moment

and that's, like, the encore.

SHEERAN: It wasn't necessarily
that I was angry.

It's just like that much adrenaline on stage,

I think walking off, it just kind of hits you.

They can't fix the loop
and do the guitar at the same time.

-And I was fucked.
-I know.

Fuck, that ruined a perfectly good gig.

But I just had to decompress.
And then Elton came in.

You have to be happy with that.

-No, I am. I am now.
-The reaction, I mean, come on.

It's just, it's just...

It was a really,
really nice conversation to have.

You know what,
I'm coming to the end of my career,

you're at the beginning of your career,

I was quite nervous so I didn't do

There's this amazing side to Ed.
Although his life must be complete chaos,

filled with nerves,
and I was really nervous about it,

then I got that show out of the way,
and all the nerves have gone and I feel

I can just enjoy it now,
and this is really, really fun.

I spoke to someone who's had a fair bit
to do with my career about this gig

and they said they'd come down and watch,
and I said,

"Nope, I would like you to come down and
play, if that's all right."

So, for the first time

on this stage, for me,

If you'd have told my 10-year-old self
that this would happen,

I would not have believed you.

JOHN: If you're an artist, this up and coming,

this is where you want to play.

You play Wembley Stadium,
you put your mark on the wall

amongst all the great people
who'd ever played.

He's done this before a lot of times,
but this is the first for me.

This feels fuckin' amazing.

Tonight is the equivalent of me playing
Dodger Stadium back in 1975.

To play to 110,000 people in two days
was astonishing for me.

The pinnacle of what I'd achieved
in my young career.

I just remember the first time I met Ed,

I was just bowled over by how sweet he was
and how humble he was,

and how ambitious he was.

His best asset is his talent, obviously,

but he's willing to ask for advice,
and that is great.

That is such an asset

for a young artist to have.

I said, "When was the first time
you played Wembley?"

And he said, "I played Wembley in '75.

"The Beach Boys
were one of my opening acts,

"and they opened with a bunch of hits,

"and I was stubborn at that time,
I was just like,

"I want to play the whole of my new album.
And people hated it."

And he said, "I've never done it again."
So, that's the advice.

Play songs that people know. Yep.

I get so much joy out of watching
Ed being successful.

I've always said we're like two peas in a pod.

I'm slightly older by about,
you know, 40-odd years,

but he reminds me of how I used to be.

SHEERAN: Would you work with Elton?

Well, I asked him at his wedding.
I was sat next to Kate Bush and him,

which is weird in itself, and I was like,
"Why don't you come sing a song with me?"

He asked me what song, and I said, "Let's do
Indian Sunset. ''He said, "Fuck off!"

So I was like, all right,
I'm gonna go back to him and choose a song

that will be one that he wants to sing.

this would be the peak,

but it's only the second record
and I'm really not even getting started.

and then, in my head, I was like,
"Oh, but I've rented this for the weekend."

Like, I've technically rented this and paid,
so we'll all just go up on the pitch,

and drink. So we were just all out, having
a street party on the pitch. It was cool.

This is the most painful conversation
I've ever had.
