[narrator] Meliodas and the others had grown more doubtful of Merlin
who'd been manipulating them to her own benefit for years.
Was that all to carry out your objective?
[narrator] While the others contended with that,
Cath attacked Arthur out of nowhere.
[dramatic music playing]
It was revealed that Cath is a tyrannical, power-hungry beast born of Chaos.
He was defeated,
but he rises and targets Arthur once again.
After parting ways with the Seven Deadly Sins,
Merlin has to face Cath all by herself to protect Arthur.
As for why Merlin never said anything about Chaos,
and why she waited until this very day to tell us…
the answer is simple.
We all had wishes we wanted to come true.
Captain, Ban, King, Diane, and me.
All of us.
You know?
By that, I mean Merlin was no different.
[intense music playing]
[Merlin grunting]
[Cath grunting]
[Cath yelling]
[Merlin grunting]
[Cath] Step aside! You're not the one I want to play with!
[Arthur] Then I'll take you on.
[Arthur grunting]
[Cath] Arthur.
Her wish was the revival of Chaos incarnate,
and resurrecting Arthur to do so as the King of Chaos.
I ask you,
if she had revealed that to us earlier, would we have helped or pushed back?
[Gowther grunting]
[intense music playing]
[narrator] This is a tale of ancient times.
An era before the human and non-human worlds were forever divided.
The battle between light and darkness had finally come to an end,
and a new age was upon Britannia.
One of peace, turmoil, or something else?
Those who seized their destinies are heroes that surpassed the gods.
The Seven Deadly Sins!
[opening theme music playing]
[music fades]
EPISODE 23 AN EVERLASTING KINGDOM
[somber music playing]
Even if that was what Merlin truly wanted,
I know how we would react.
We'd tell her, "No. Don't do it,"
or, "You can't. It's too dangerous."
It makes perfect sense why she couldn't tell us.
Yeah, but that power really is dangerous!
But that could be said of any power depending on how it's used.
[King groaning]
I still don't like it!
It doesn't change the fact that she's been using us over and over this whole time.
But don't forget Merlin has also saved us over and over again.
Right, but…
Huh. Well, you do have a point there.
[Gowther] And since the conditions to resurrect Chaos have been fulfilled,
and the rest of our wishes have come true,
she decided we no longer needed her.
That's why she waited until now to come clean.
What's your point?
You're taking her side an awful lot, Gowther.
Enough of this, King. Stop it already.
I'm siding with neither party. Just speculating.
Then I guess it's true. That thing the Priestess of Chaos told us.
About Humans and the other races never understanding each other.
Yeah. I don't doubt that for a second.
No wonder I never see eye-to-eye with King.
[King] Listen. For the record, I don't count you as a human.
And shut up!
[Gowther] I am a doll, so I am technically neither.
Knowing that, allow me to say this.
As far as I'm concerned, I could never place you all in rank.
You're equally precious.
[King sighing]
If a certain someone was here, they'd probably say the same thing.
No doubt.
I'm sure that Escanor would have felt the exact same way.
Yes. Agreed.
[Meliodas] Regardless, we can't let Chaos roam around freely.
There's a ringleader responsible for this mess,
and she needs to be held accountable.
[Gowther] Wait, Captain.
So what do you plan to do with Merlin?
[gasping] Meliodas. This magic I feel.
Could it be?
[ominous music playing]
[Arthur] I was wrong to take you back with me.
I will settle this myself, once and for all.
Prepare for oblivion!
[Cath] And how will you do that?
You can't kill me by simply chopping me into pieces!
I will defeat you, no matter what!
As king, I have a responsibility to protect this country and it's people.
That means it is my sworn duty
to exterminate any and all who pose a threat to either!
[Cath] Protect the country and it's people?
Don't you know that both of those things are gone already?
[Cath cackling]
-No way? -[Cath] Oh. Didn't you know?
Camelot no longer exists in Britannia.
It's collateral damage of the battle waged
between the Seven Deadly Sins and the Demon King.
[gasping] That's a lie
[Cath] Hmm?
If you don't believe me, take a look for yourself.
You can do so using the power of Chaos.
[Arthur grunting]
[Arthur] No. It can't be.
[Merlin] Arthur.
Don't let his words sway your conviction!
But I…
I can see it.
Camelot has been reduced to rubble.
The people aren't there anymore.
It's… Everything's been destroyed!
[Arthur groaning]
[Merlin] You can rebuild your kingdom again.
And most of the people who'd been held hostage by the Commandments are safe!
They sought refuge in Liones!
But the vault…
The underground vault is gone too.
I remember so many people being in there
awaiting the return of their loved ones who'd been taken hostage.
I made a promise.
I swore to everyone that I would restore Camelot.
And now, after all that's happened…
[Cath snarling]
Arthur!
[Merlin grunting]
[Cath grunting]
-[Cath yelling] -[Merlin gasping]
Now, Full Counter!
[Cath grunting]
[dramatic music playing]
M-Meliodas…
You're…
[Merlin gasping]
Sissy. Both of you are here? But why?
Mm-mm. It's not just the two of us.
[Merlin gasping]
Hey, Merlin!
[Diane giggling]
[Merlin gasping]
[Elizabeth] We should help Arthur at once!
[Merlin] Right.
Looks like he's merely unconscious.
What a relief.
Merlin.
We're going to hold you personally accountable for resurrecting Chaos.
So you must devote the rest of your life to the protection and guidance of Arthur.
[Merlin grunting]
If you came all this way to tell me that, there was no need.
That was already what I had planned.
Also, we bear some responsibility
for forgiving your foolishness.
[Merlin gasping]
That means…
[Meliodas chuckling]
We plan to protect you guys from this point forward. Sound good?
[Merlin grunting]
I am in your debt.
[rumbling]
[gasping]
[Cath] I'm sick and tired of everyone always getting in my way!
It's so annoying.
The little pieces of whatever that thing's made of are moving.
[King] Is this the same kind of immortality as Ban's?
Not at all.
We're dealing with a being who transcends life and death itself.
[Arthur coughing]
Arthur, please. Just hang in there.
[Cath] Hey, Arthur.
Are you really shocked to this degree?
About losing your country and your people?
All countries eventually fall.
Even if the Demon King and the Seven Deadly Sins hadn't done it,
something was bound to happen to it, eventually.
Hmm. A giant meteor could have struck it and wiped it off the map.
Or it could have sunk into the sea and vanished.
The possibilities are endless!
What are you getting at?
[Cath] I'm saying the outcome is always the same.
You don't know what you're talking about!
[Cath] I'm warning you to quit fighting what is obviously inevitable.
No matter which route you take,
everyone is eventually going to die, you know?
That goes for humans, animals, countries,
mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, stars, and even gods!
So you're telling me that I might as well let you eat me and be done with it?
[Cath] That's right, Arthur.
You're correct.
[Arthur grunting]
Enough of all this chit-chat.
You said it. Let's rip him apart already.
[ominous music playing]
[Cath] Ugh. Dealing with you all is such a pain.
[Cath grunting]
[Ban yelling]
[Ban grunting]
[Diane efforting]
[Meliodas grunting]
[Cath grunting]
[Cath groaning]
Now, Breaker Off!
[Cath grunting]
All right. I'm going to defeat you myself, Cath.
[Cath] Arthur, please. No.
[Cath coughing]
[Cath chuckling]
[Cath] Just kidding.
[all gasping]
What the heck? Cath stopped moving!
I've suspended time on him.
But the curse I've used is unstable.
Possibly due to the effect of Chaos.
He'll likely recover sometime in the near future.
Perhaps in a few decades, perhaps in a few centuries.
Who knows?
Well, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Yes. Whatever happens, we'll be fine as long as we fight together.
[both chuckling]
[Elizabeth] Now, Let's all go home.
[dramatic music playing]
[crowd cheering]
[bells tolling]
[Elizabeth] I wish everyone could have joined the ceremony.
[Meliodas] It can't be helped.
Elaine's expecting a kid, and Ban probably isn't leaving her side.
The Fairy King and the Queen of Giants went back to the Fairy Realm
to start building their lives together.
And Gowther and Hawk have their own lives to live too, you know?
It's not easy to get everyone together as it used to be.
[Elizabeth] I wonder how Merlin and Arthur are doing?
[Meliodas] It's been a while, but knowing those two,
they're probably busy rebuilding the new kingdom
Are you in pain?
I'm sorry, my love. [groaning]
Why are you apologizing?
Because I'm not long of this world and I'll be leaving you all by yourself.
I've grown old and will never be reincarnated again.
That means today is the last day I'll ever spend with you.
[emotional music playing]
[Elizabeth] It really was a happy 3,000 years.
Please don't be sad, Meliodas.
You're…
[soldier panting]
Your Highness, it's an emergency!
[Meliodas gasping]
[Cath] Hey. Long time no see.
All alone today? Did everyone else already die?
Oh, that's a shame.
[dramatic music playing]
-[Cath cackling] -[Meliodas grunting]
[Cath] Hey! What's wrong?
You seem to be in a bit of pain!
I should have killed you all in our last battle.
That way you would have been saved from this pain and loneliness.
Now you're alone and have no friends left.
Give it up.
There are no constants you can depend on.
This world is Chaos itself.
Everyone eventually fades away,
as though they were never here from the start.
[Elizabeth] Don't be sad, Meliodas.
-[Meliodas] No! -[Cath] Huh?
[Elizabeth] The beast is wrong.
You are not alone.
We are all with you, and we always will be.
Forever.
Our bonds will never fade! Not today, not tomorrow!
Not ever!
[Meliodas gasping, panting]
[dramatic music playing]
[Cath] Hmm? Wow. Look at that.
What a surprise. I didn't think you'd make it back.
[Meliodas gasping]
[Meliodas] Elizabeth! Everyone!
[Meliodas' breath shuddering]
What I experienced just now,
was that some kind of hallucination?
Or a future reality?
[Arthur] It was neither.
More like a future possibility.
A glimpse of an as of yet uncertain take on this world.
-[Meliodas] Arthur! Are you okay? -I'm fine.
But I don't think any of us will be for long
unless we find some way to defeat him.
[Cath cackling] That's an exercise in futility.
I can't be killed.
Arthur will be eaten by me
and then I will become fully unified with Chaos and swallow everything!
[Arthur gasping] That's it.
I've figured it out, Cath!
I know how to defeat you!
[Cath] That's funny, Arthur.
So you say you've figured out how to defeat me.
Do tell.
If chopping me up won't kill me,
then will you crush me?
Burn me? Melt me? All of the above perhaps?
It doesn't matter.
I'm going to eat you whole before you get the chance!
[Meliodas grunting]
[Cath exclaiming]
You're wrong. The one getting eaten will be you!
[King] Wait a second. What were we just doing?
Everyone! Are you all awake now?
[Diane screaming]
What in the world is going on here?
[Cath screaming]
[Cath straining]
[Arthur] If I can't defeat you, then I'll absorb you!
Cath Palug will cease to exist,
and I'll take back all the Chaos that you've stolen!
[Cath] N-no.
I won't give it back!
As a direct descendant of Chaos,
I'm the only one in existence fit to wield it's power!
[intense music playing]
Is it actually trying to push back against Arthur's power?
Tell me. What exactly do you hope to accomplish
with the power of Chaos?
[Cath] I'm going to destroy everything!
Anything with a form will perish and disappear!
Then I'll destroy everything else that remains!
Destroy. Destroy. Destroy!
It's sad.
He's nothing but destructive will wrought by Chaos.
What about you, Arthur? What will you use Chaos for?
Would you fail to learn your lesson and build another kingdom,
even though it's destined to fall?
[Arthur gasping]
[Cath] I bet every single one of your dead subjects hates you now!
To them, you're the incompetent King Arthur,
unable to protect his people or his country!
-Arthur! -[Arthur gasping]
[Arthur] Sir Meliodas!
[Meliodas] Listen.
What matters is not what others think about you,
but what you think about others.
[Arthur gasping]
[Arthur] What I want isn't for others to acknowledge me as a good king.
All I want is the chance for everyone to live happily.
I swear, here and now,
I don't care who laughs at me or talks behind my back.
I want a land where no one suffers or experiences grief.
A place where no one knows fear from any threat or disaster.
I will create such a place as an everlasting kingdom.
[Cath] An everlasting kingdom?
[Cath laughing]
[Cath] Are you really this big of a fool, Arthur?
Nothing is everlasting. That's an illusion.
That kind of world doesn't exist.
It's a contradiction! It's Chaos!
Huh?
What do you know? The crazy beast just admitted it himself.
He walked right into that one.
[Cath grunting, screaming]
That's right. And I 'm the King of Chaos.
[Cath] No! No!
[Cath grunting, groaning]
[gulping]
[Meliodas] Elizabeth.
[Elizabeth grunting]
Huh? Looks like we finally made it back to the normal world.
[gasping] Where's Cath?
I think Cath is inside me.
Though I'm not sure if he's in my stomach or not.
So did you get back whatever power that monster cat had stolen?
I wish I knew the answer to that, but I'm not really sure.
Yes. The power of Chaos has been returned in full.
What you hold in your hand is more proof than anything of that.
[Arthur gasping]
[Arthur] The Holy Sword.
[Arthur gasping]
[Meliodas] That's some magic power you got there.
It suits you.
Definitely fit for a king who will make an everlasting kingdom.
Come on. I'm blushing.
[chuckling] I was only trying to rise to the occasion.
And what I said was pretty silly, if you think about it.
So…
-[Meliodas chuckling] -[Arthur grunting]
A man can't just take back a promise like that once he's said it out loud.
Sir Meliodas, I…
[Meliodas] Why not go for it?
The wilder the goal you set for yourself, the more it's worth carrying out.
-[Arthur] Okay! -Perhaps even too wild.
[Merlin grunting]
Let's see what you've got in mind.
Get out there and create that world.
And if you take the wrong path or make a mistake,
it'll be all right, because…
[Meliodas chuckling]
…the Seven Deadly Sins will be with you!
[Arthur gasping]
Thanks for that. I appreciate it.
Your purity and truth are my everlasting goal.
[ending theme music playing]
[music fades]
