I felt like the person standing

And the room had two doors.

It would have put
other people in jeopardy.

I couldn't do that,
I wouldn't do that.

had passed

That I'd just stayed within
a room.

my sense of self.

Just briefly about the problem
of missing children.

Well over a million
american children

Disappeared from their homes or
neighborhoods every year,

Causing, as we can all
understand,

Heartbreaking anguish.

Parents cry out for help,
many through letters to me.

For example, I learned about
jonelle matthews

Of greeley, colorado,

Who would've celebrated
a happy 13th birthday

With her family just last month.

Five days before christmas,

Jonelle disappeared from
her home.

[angela] I had to open one of
those doors,

Because there was
a 12-year-old girl

Counting on me.

[dramatic music]

I had to try.

A dairy has begun printing

The pictures of missing children
on its milk cartons,

In the hope that will help
authorities find them.

[male reporter]jonelle
matthews, 12 years old,

Alone in the house,
was kidnapped.

It affected people for decades.
It still does.

[woman] greeley was a sleepy
little town.

[male reporter]there's a deep
fear now in us.

Something like this had never
happened before.

[jennifer]I'm scared,
I wouldn't want it

To happen to me.

[male reporter]as the search

For jonelle matthews
intensifies,

It will be a christmas eve
devoid of joy.

[jim] the longer you go without
knowing,

The less hope there is
she's alive.

We would do anything to get her
back.

[male reporter]she remains
one of

A growing number of
abducted children.

December 20th was always a date
you remembered.

[dramatic music]

[mike] kids come and go with
no concern

The boogeyman is outside.

[serious music]

[ominous music]

[jennifer] jonelle would walk
this home from school.

I think it's a mile and a half.
Which, nobody does that anymore.

[somber music]

[jennifer] greeley in the '80s
was innocent, pure,

And a child's playground.

So, this green house is
the house that I grew up in.

Jonelle's window was
the third one on the right.

It seems so small now.

[ominous music]

Greeley was safe.
Until December 20th, 1984.

[contemplative music]

[jennifer] in our home,

I had my dad, jim,
my mother gloria,

And my younger sister, jonelle.

She's three and a half years
younger than I was.

My sister, she would be the life
of our quiet family,

Because she was the planner.

As long as you were okay with
what she had planned,

Come and join her!

[contemplative music]

[jennifer] she was kind
and loving.

But we were just two
different girls

With different personalities,

And I think it was startin' to
amp up a little bit.

[pop music]

♪ whoa ♪

[jennifer] jonelle loved to
perform.

Jonelle was starting to get into
music, she developed earlier.

She was fiery, and...

Just got in my space,

And, uh, I just wanted no part
of it.

So...

[somber music]

[jennifer] when I think about
jonelle

And just the relationship
we had,

Maybe I didn't give her
the opportunity

To get to know her better.

Maybe I wasn't the best sister.

[shrill violin music]

You look back and wish that
things could've been different,

But they weren't.

[tense music]

[jim] our family was going in
different directions that night.

Jonelle's mother hadn't seen
her parents

For at least a couple years.

So, she was gonna fly out
that evening to los angeles

And surprise her parents for
christmas.

Jennifer had a home
basketball game that night,

And jonelle had a concert.

Jonelle was in the honor choir
at her middle school,

And it was gonna be held at,
uh, what we call

The united bank in town.

[gloria] a few days before
christmas vacation,

Jonelle had a cold.

So, I made her stay home
from school.

She was home, I think,
for two days.

And on the third day
she went to school,

Because she wanted to be in
the choir.

She was looking forward to
having christmas.

[tense music]

[gloria] by quarter to six,

Jennifer was
going to her basketball game.

I'm going to the airport.

And so, we all had apple cider.

I remember her being difficult.

Jonelle said, "mom and dad,

What are we gonna do for,
for christmas?"

And we told her that we would
celebrate it

As soon as gloria came home,
which was gonna be the 26th.

And she was pretty upset
about that.

[eerie music]

[gloria] I just said
"goodbye, jonelle."

You know, kissed her,
kissed jennifer.

There's so many things that
I wish

That I would have done,
but I didn't.

[eerie music]

[jim] I decided that I was gonna
take jonelle out,

Uh, to get, you know,
something at mcdonald's

Before I dropped her off at
school.

She was excited.

She was six or seven weeks away
from her 13th birthday.

[emotional music]

[jim] the bus was loading
children for the concert.

I had to kinda choose between,
you know,

Was I gonna go to the concert,

Or was I gonna go to
the basketball game?

And with my sports interests and
everything,

Uh, I gravitated towards going
to that basketball game.

[suspenseful music]

I watched her get
on the bus.

That was the last time
I saw her.

[deanna] the choir concert was
a big thing

Because it was gonna be, um,
televised.

Jonelle, she was up front.

I was probably hiding in
the back, I'm sure.

[shrill violin music]

[deanna] jonelle was very
excited about putting on a show.

♪ oh, jingle bells,
jingle bells ♪

♪ jingle all the way ♪

♪ we wish you a merry christma,
we wish you a merry christmas ♪

[jim] I wasn't really sure when
jonelle was gonna be home.

And I knew that her two
best friends from church,

Uh, their parents were
going there,

And that she would be picked up
by one of those.

[serious music]

Because of the nature of
greeley,

And it's a safe place,

We knew that she would be taken
care of.

[serious music]

[russell] so, about
8 o'clock or so,

I drove up a little before
the buses got there,

But the buses come pullin' in,

And of course the kids got off
the buses and so on.

Pretty soon I see my daughter
deanna.

Jonelle's with her,
and jonelle says,

"can I have a ride home?"

And I said, "you bet."

[serious music]

[russell] did it
a thousand times.

It was just, didn't
even think about it.

The girls were giddy about,
you know,

"hey, we were on cable.

Maybe they'll want
our signatures."

[deanna] we were just talking
about christmas break,

Exchanging gifts, maybe talkin'
about boys.

Jonelle seemed perfectly normal.
It was like any other time.

[serious music]

[russell] and I pulled up
the driveway,

It wasn't quite 8:30, maybe.

[serious music]

[russell] the garage is part of
the way up.

Kinda normal.

Of course, the headlights went
into the garage.

But nothin' unusual, I guess.

[deanna] I told her,
"I'll see you tomorrow."

She turned around and waved.

We always had her flick
the lights on and off

Just to make sure she made it in
and everything's fine.

[somber music]

And that was
the last conversation we had.

[tense music]

[somber music]

[jennifer] I didn't see my dad
coming into

My basketball game that night,

But I could hear him in
the crowd.

[buzzer blaring]

[jim] after the game,
I came straight home.

There was snow on the ground.

As I was pulling into
the driveway,

I heard the news come on
at 9:30.

I parked in the garage.

Walked into the house.
I said, "hello, jonelle."

And I got no response.

[ominous music]

[jim] I went downstairs,

And I could see that jonelle had
been there.

The tv was on,

She had taken her pantyhose off

And laid them right on
the couch.

I just thought that
she's upstairs,

And maybe she didn't hear me.

[tense music]

[jim] uh, I walked back
upstairs.

[tense music]

Jonelle was not there.

[ominous music]

[jim] that's when I started
feeling

That something's out of place.

[ominous music]

[jennifer] I got home closer
to ten.

[ominous music]

And things were different.

[tense music]

[jennifer] my dad said to me,

"jenny, do you know where
jonelle is?"

I had no clue.

She was supposed to be at home.
That was the plan.

[tense music]

[jennifer] I've never seen
my dad worried about

Jonelle like that before.

[ominous music]

It was like she just vanished.

Ic]

[jim] it's getting late at
night,

And jonelle still hasn't
shown up,

And I haven't got
a phone call from anybody.

Well, I called a couple of
her friends.

[russell] around ten or so,
I get a call from jim,

And he says,
"have you seen jonelle?"

And I was like, "well,

We dropped her off a little
after 8."

[jim] russ told me that she
flicked the lights on,

And I know she got
in the house safely.

But then he shared with me that
the garage door was open.

[serious music]

[jim] I said, "no,
wait a minute.

That's not normal."

[serious music]

I know the garage door was not
open when I left.

[dramatic music]

[jennifer] it didn't make sense

That jonelle would just
run away.

We both were really good about
being where we were supposed to.

She was just gone.

[eerie music]

[jim] I decided to call
my pastor,

Who was probably
my closest friend at that time,

And he said, 'jim, you probably
need to be callin' the police'.

[somber music]

[phone ringing]

[ominous music]

[mike] about 11 o'clock on
the 20th of December,

Jim matthews called,

Believing that his daughter was
either missing or had run away.

Greeley police department was
fairly small.

Uh, it was roughly 70
to 80 officers total.

[suspenseful music]

[mark] I was on routine patrol,

And I was the first officer
on scene.

[serious music]

[mark] mr. Matthews greeted me
at the door.

I was surprised he
wasn't very talkative,

But a couple of things were out
of place.

He said his daughter had,
uh, returned from a concert.

He indicated to come back
and find the garage door open.

[suspenseful music]

[mark] there was absolutely no
sign of a struggle in the home.

There was no sign of
forced entry.

The television was on,

Jonelle's shoes appeared to
have just been kicked off.

Her nylons were found bundled up
on a, on a couch.

Jennifer and jim would help in
going through her things.

They confirmed that all of
jonelle's shoes

Were present in the home.

But they couldn't find the coat
they knew she had worn

When she went to sing in
the choir earlier that evening.

[eerie music]

A runaway is not gonna throw
on a pair of slippers

And walk out of
the home with a coat on.

[ominous music]

[mark] outside, what really
caught my eye was

I could see marks in the snow.

There were shoe prints in
the snow in the backyard

That appeared to
have been raked out.

As far as jim could tell,
they were not his.

And jim is unable to explain
why it looks the way it looked.

The footprints led from
the garage

To the garden-level windows in
the back of the home,

As if someone had been looking
into the windows

And then raked the tracks out.

And as you entered this garage,
to the left was a rack

And a rake.

Uh, your common metal-head rake
with a wood handle.

[serious music]

[jim] the tracks in front of
the house, to me,

Showed that somebody was looking
into our house.

I never thought
that jonelle ran away.

[suspenseful music]

[mike] in short order,
phone calls began to be made

With an eye towards
that this was a kidnapping,

Um, and not necessarily
a runaway.

But other than the raking in
the snow,

They really didn't have, uh,
any additional evidence

That she'd been kidnapped.

No forced entry.
No signs of a struggle.

Uh, no witnesses on the street
that saw anything.

If this was a kidnapping,

The suspect had to know that
gloria was gone for california,

That jim would not be
home until 9:30,

And that, uh, jonelle would be
home alone

At, at roughly 8:30 in
the evening.

When detectives kinda
considered that,

It became impossible for someone
to know these set of facts.

So, either it was a completely
random thing,

Or it's someone that knows
a lot about

The family's comings and goings.

[ominous music fading out]

[jim] by the end of that night,
I was just numb.

I meant, "I can't believe
what's going on.

The police have been here,
my daughter's missing."

[phone ringing]

[jim] my wife's not here.
It was devastating.

[emotional music]

[gloria] by the time I came to
california,

My sister and brother-in-law
picked me up.

And I called up jim...

And I said, "hi, honey.
I'm here safely."

[suspenseful music]

[jim] that's when the nightmare,
really,

For both of us really hit us.

[emotional music]

[gloria] I felt that
she was taken.

[emotional music]

[emotional music]

I had no idea.

[emotional music]

[ominous music]

[radio reporter]it was in
1969 or 70...

[jennifer] when I woke up and
getting ready for school,

It was already on the radio.

[radio reporter]saw anything
unusual

Thursday night...

I had a police car take me to
school, so that's odd.

[jim] there were policemen
canvassing

The neighborhood,
talking to people

If they'd seen
anything, heard anything.

[mike] officers started
knockin' on doors.

And smartly done that early in
the morning,

Because you gotta catch people

Before they start leaving for
work.

The street is cordoned off.

Essentially, anyone leaving
the neighborhood

Would have to speak with
an officer.

A thorough neighborhood canvas
began round the matthews' home.

Open fields, an irrigation ditch
that ran nearby.

It was essentially very,
very wide open.

[male reporter]police looking
along river bottoms, in fields.

Investigator jack statler
looking for anything

That would help locate
jonelle matthews.

The next-door neighbor recalled
with specificity, for sure,

That his dog began to bark
incessantly at the fence

At 8:42 p.M.,

Something it's never done
before.

[eerie music]

[mike] jim pulled into
his garage

At exactly 9:30 in the evening.

And so, reports would indicate
collectively

That, uh, between 8:45 and 9:30,

Jonelle disappeared from home.

Well, it was perplexing for
the police.

I mean, this doesn't happen.

The proposition for some drifter
coming through town

And just stumbling into a house

That conveniently
had what he wanted,

And then just vanishes into
the night?

It's so fantastical that it
comes across as impossible.

Anyone who knows about
the raking in the snow

Had to have been involved in
jonelle's disappearance,

And that's really
our only lead in this case.

But if an intruder had
kidnapped jonelle,

How do you take a 12-year-old
that is feisty

Outta the house
and get her to your car,

And nobody sees you drive away?

Maybe she knew the individual.

You know, she agreed to go
because she trusted them.

Or she was overpowered and
drug to a car.

[ominous music]

[gloria] I flew home that night.

I was crying the whole way.
Just missing her a lot.

[ominous music]

[jennifer] I could hear my mom
crying

Through our air ducts in
our house.

I was just waiting for answers
from the police,

And they weren't finding them.

[russell] I racked my brain for
tryin' to think about,

"what did I miss?"

Because we were the last ones to
actually see her,

And I just, yeah.

[serious music]

[deanna] I felt like she had to
be somewhere, right?

She had to be home before
christmas, 'cause that's...

Her presents are waiting
for her.

[male reporter]christmas eve
for the matthews

Will be a time of prayer
and anticipation.

But if jonelle doesn't come
home,

It will be a christmas eve
devoid of joy.

[erin] it was on the news
every night.

For the matthews family,
that was their new life.

[male reporter]as the search
for

Jonelle matthews intensifies,

The wait for word continues for
jonelle's family.

You know,
there's a tremendous void.

Of course, you know?

And of course, we won't open
up her christmas presents,

You know, until she gets, um,
back.

[serious music]

[erin] they didn't have a lot of
leads to go off of,

And that was apparent.

[male reporter]police say they
have no solid leads or suspect.

That's the reason for
the reward.

[mike] there comes a point where
the fbi enters into this,

And they're offering
their assistance

Just with the sheer volume of
tips that were coming in.

[gloria] people were calling in

And saying that they saw jonelle
in a car or whatever.

All of the phone calls to
our house

Were answered by our pastor,

Because he didn't want us to
be bothered with it.

Just looking for that one straw
in the wind

That will turn everything
the other way.

[mike] at times, the tips are
almost like

A taunt, uh, to law enforcement.

In other cases, you don't
know that it's made up.

[ominous music]

[mike] in January of 1985,

The police department
received a phone call from

Someone claiming to be a pastor
named pankey.

He straight-out said that

Someone had come forward to him
and confessed,

But that pankey was prevented
from telling statler

Who this individual was,

Hiding behind, for lack of
a better word,

'pastoral privilege'.

Several days later,

Pankey arrived at
the police department

And basically said, "disregard,
don't worry about my lead."

And he just kind of vanished
from the face of the earth.

At the time, the officers
thought it was just a prank.

It was nothing legitimate.

But they were not realizing what
they had missed.

[serious music]

[male reporter]as the search

For jonelle matthews
intensifies,

The wait for word continues for
jonelle's family.

These days are both frustrating
and painful.

[angela] in 1984,

We were living west of greeley,
about three miles.

And at that point we had no tv,
no radio.

But it was cornfields
and open space

Between there and the mountains.

Every christmas,
there was always snow.

My husband, steve, was never
into christmas.

Like, you know,
the holiday type stuff.

But for christmas this year,
steve's dad said,

"hey, it'd just be wonderful

If you guys could come to
big bear,

Spend some time with
the old folks,

'cause we don't know how
many christmases

They're gonna be with us."

But steve said we
weren't gonna go.

[ominous music]

[angela] so, the afternoon of
the 21st,

All of a sudden,
steve came home and said,

"get us packed, we're leaving
tomorrow morning."

[emotional music]

[angela] I felt so bad because
we had two great dane dogs.

Steve said, "don't worry
about the dogs."

That, "I dumped the dogs.
Get us ready to go."

We weren't going,
and now all of a sudden,

He's dumped the dogs?

I mean, it was just like,
"what on earth is going on?"

[intriguing music]

[angela] on the 23rd of
December,

We arrived at big bear.

His family was not expecting us.

And the trip did not go well.

So, on christmas morning,
during breakfast,

Steve and his dad got into
a heated argument.

Steve came down and said,
"get us packed and ready to go.

We're going back to greeley."

[serious music]

[angela] two or three hours out
of big bear,

Steve said, "turn the radio on."

[radio static]

[male reporter]jonelle
matthews,

Five foot three with brown hair
and braces.

It was being broadcast quite
frequently

That there was a missing girl.

She was twelve years old,
her name was jonelle matthews.

[male reporter]jonelle was
supposed to receive

A stereo for her 13th birthday,

And the absolute mystery about
her disappearance

Remains unsolved.

Steve said, "keep looking,
keep looking."

He was just so focused on
these news reports,

Over and over.

I'm flipping the radio dial

For the entire
rest of the trip home.

And some of the reports were
actually saying

Russ ross's name

As the family friend who
had brought her home.

[ominous music]

[angela] he worked with a man
named russ ross.

Ross was in some sort of
a supervisory capacity

Over steve's job.

Steve just didn't like it
at all.

[male reporter]she was alone in
the house.

[angela] but it felt like he was
getting some sort of glee.

Now russ ross was sitting in
the hot seat

Because he was the last adult to
see her.

Oh, I absolutely thought he was
acting strange.

But I just didn't quite
understand.

[ominous music]

[angela] so, now we're home.

We're kinda go into
a normal mode for, you know,

Two or three days.

And all of a sudden,
I smelled smoke.

And at the back of the property,
there's a car on fire.

And steve is standing near
the car,

Kinda leaning on a shovel.

Why was the car on fire?
Why would you do that?

What was he doing?

[somber music]

jonelle matthews

Disappeared from her greeley
home one month ago today.

Abduction is the fate of

An estimated 150,000 children in
the u.S. Every year.

We would sell this house.
We would sell everything.

We would, you know, do anything
to get her back.

[male reporter]jonelle
matthews will turn

13 in two weeks.

No one knows where she'll
spend her birthday.

She remains one of

A growing number of
abducted children.

[gloria] I just thought about
jonelle.

All night long, dreams.

[somber music]

There was absolutely nothing.

[somber music]

[jim] you hold out hope that
she's gonna show up.

But the longer you go without
knowing

What's going on with her,

The less hope there is that
she's alive.

[tense music]

Well, come January of '85,
jonelle's gone.

She's not coming home.

[eerie music]

[mike] the more time passes,

The evidence that you're
looking for grows old.

And so they're, they're
trying everything they can

To find a direction to go to
in this investigation.

But in the absence of something
that is plausible,

No one fit the mold
better than, uh, jim matthews.

He had the knowledge that
jonelle would be home alone.

He knew that gloria would not be
there.

He knew that jen
wouldn't be home.

He was the logical
potential suspect.

[ominous music]

[mike] jim was asked to come in

And conduct, uh, a,
a polygraph examination.

[jim] uh, I had heard about this
in the news,

That this was not something that
was out of the ordinary.

And I said, sure,

'cause I knew I wasn't a part
of this.

I don't know what happened.

They'd ask me questions like,

"do you know where jonelle is?"

Uh, what I knew,
what I remember.

I got upset.

[mike] jim failed the polygraph,

And it secured in the minds of
every detective

That he definitely had
something to do

With the disappearance of
jonelle.

'cause they had no
other options.

[ominous music]

[angela] February of 1985,

I was working as church janitor
at faith ministries.

We were living west of greeley,
about three miles.

It was an okay house.

The church was right across
the street.

Steve had the car dealership.

He would buy insurance totals
and fix the cars up.

Life was very, very hard.
We were very, very poor.

If we could keep
the car dealership going

And get it a little more
fine-tuned,

And, you know, with me doing
this side job, and...

There was potential for it
being brighter soon.

[somber music]

[angela] one Sunday morning,

After we had had the prayer and
the announcement,

Pastor dowell suddenly said,
"I have a word from the lord.

The lord says that jonelle is
gonna be safely returned

And reunited with her family."

Steve was sitting to my left.

And all of a sudden he says,
"false prophet."

And he stands up, and he says,
"false prophet," again.

I thought he was being a bit
too angry.

I mean, I was embarrassed,
I thought something about that

Had really, really, really
agitated him.

I couldn't quite figure out
what.

Two ushers in our area got up,

And they're walking him out
of the church.

I didn't ask.
I didn't say anything.

I was afraid to.
I, I was afraid.

It wasn't safe.

[somber music]

[eileen] when I first heard
a rumor that it could be jim...

It angered me.

It was our duty to find her.

I wanted to do something beyond

What the police were doing or
not doing.

[intriguing string music]

[male reporter]jim matthews
calls it

A national disgrace,

And says we spend more money
recovering stolen cars

In this country

Than we do in
recovering missing children.

[eileen] there were a number
of us who

Were friends and parents,

And that's kind of how

The rescue jonelle effort
then started.

[male reporter]more than
600 people

Crowded into a greeley church
before dawn this morning

To volunteer to help in
the search for jonelle.

[eileen] we had tens of
thousands of

Posters printed.

We were mailing them overseas.

We started calling networks and
trying to get the word out.

Greeley and the whole city
wanted to do something to help.

We were going after the world.

I kept brainstorming, thinking,

Who was the next place we could
go to?

It just came to me.

"well, maybe we should get
the president on this."

The white house has
a phone number.

[serious music]

[eileen] I just thought,
"why not try it?"

[calm music]

Thank you very much.

I want to speak to you just
briefly about

A great, powerful
public service that you posses.

Then you started seeing
the milk cartons at your store.

the nation's missing children

By keeping their images
high in the public eye.

Jonelle was one of the first
that was on the milk cartons.

[gloria] to be honest with you,
it's...

I, I felt that's the least
that they could do.

[emotional music]

[jennifer] it was important,

Because that circulates
her face.

Because you just never know.

[emotional music]

But I think you also prepare
your heart

That it might not
make a difference.

[mike] the president mentioned
jonelle matthews,

And the results of that

Was a flood of incoming tips
across the nation.

[serious string music]

[mike] people are claiming now

That they're seeing her
everywhere;

West virginia, minneapolis,
washington state,

The east coast, southern states.

Every, every corner of,
of the nation.

It was overwhelming.
Defeating.

Jonelle wasn't found,
evidence wasn't found.

No leads were developed,

And jim matthews remained
a potential suspect.

[dramatic music]

They were exactly at
the same place

They were at the start of
the search.

[ominous music]

[eileen] there wasn't a doubt in
my mind

That someone in greeley
knew something.

[ominous music fading out]

[angela] we were married in,
October of 1978.

[ominous music]

[angela] it, it started to
change rather quickly.

One day, steve said, "could you
go by the storage unit

And pick up my welding rods?

Make sure that it's locked.
Make sure it's locked."

The padlock that he had on
the storage unit was just huge.

It was a big, heavy padlock.

It was hard for me to try and
lock it.

To my dad's cabin.

The water wasn't on.

anything like that.

And steve says to me,
"stay in the cabin.

Don't go out.
Don't leave.

I'm gonna be back."

I mean, I'm totally, totally
isolated there.

I mean, how long is he gonna to
leave me here?

Five days, I'm there.

And steve comes in, and he had
a sack of groceries.

"make me something to eat."

That was a sign of things to
come

For the, for the rest of
our marriage.

[angela] for the rest of
my married life,

I was very scared of steve.

It was almost like, "I own you.
I'm married to you, I own you."

And his control grew and grew,

And I became more silent and
less sure of

Anything I should say or do.

Everything was
a potential trigger

To set him off.

He told me, "if you're
thinking about leaving me,

You're gonna watch me
shoot both boys.

Then I'm gonna shoot you,
then I'm gonna kill myself.

in that situation.

In a room with two doors,

And I wasn't safe to open
either one of them.

I felt totally trapped.

Like, how was I possibly ever
going to...

Find my way out of that?
