[Melody of Golden Age]

[Episode 40]

Mother Empress.

Punish Zhang Xingwei according to the law.

But considering the Zhang family

has past merits, please show some mercy.

Empress Dowager.

The Zhang family has served as Prime Minister for three generations.

They have contributed to the Dacang.

One person's mistake should not implicate the entire innocent family.

Minister Shen, do you really think so?

I know well the suffering of being in the detention center.

I only hope

the truth can be cleared.

The eighth year of the Shengli Era,

Prime Minister Zhang Xingwei

[Late father Shen Bingzhu's tablet] was given poisoned wine to kill himself.

Prince Xian, Xiao Zhong, volunteered to defend the borders

and won't return for ten years.

The Jinxiu Workshop case was overturned and the injustice redressed.

Shen Bingzhu alleged treason was re-examined.

Officials of the Zhou family were all prosecuted.

The relatives of the Zhou family

were demoted and sent back to their hometown,

and forever barred from entering Xiang'an.

The Shen family's slandered name was finally cleared.

[Late father Shen Bingzhu's tablet]

♫ Grudges and karma, right and wrong ♫

♫ Tears and blood in the past life ♫

Father.

Mother.

♫ Fate is full of twists and turns ♫

I finally did it.

[Late father Shen Bingzhu's tablet]

♫ Through storms and uncertainties, I devote myself to you ♫

♫ At least you share my joy and sorrow ♫

♫ Unraveling mystery fearlessly in this dream ♫

♫ Hand in hand with you, I wander this splendid world ♫

By heavenly decree,

here comes the edict.

The former Minister Shen, Shen Bingzhu,

alleged treason

was actually wronged.

The loyalty of the Shen family is witnessed by everyone.

A monument of loyalty and courage is now specially bestowed.

[Announcement] The Shen family's deceased can be buried with honor.

All related family members shall be treated with privilege.

Uncle Shen.

Do you see it?

He finally clears

the Shen family's name.

Smart.

Good.

Mother Empress.

I'm sorry.

I beg you to punish me.

If I want to punish you,

I'd do it long ago.

Yong'an.

I don't punish you,

not because of the relationship between mother and daughter,

but because

you only funded the local soldiers,

which does no harm to the Dacang

or the state.

But

if you dare to harbor a hint of rebellious intent…

I would never dare.

I have already surrendered all my private assets

into the national treasury.

My life

is also at your disposal.

Rise.

Such a mistake must not be made again.

I will keep this in mind.

Yong'an.

Do you think

funding the local area

some provisions,

then you will win the people's hearts?

The so-called people's hearts

cannot be bought.

Now that your royal brother is defending the borders.

And you are here in Xiang'an.

You should perhaps do something

for the Dacang.

I don't have to tell you more, right?

I will surely do my utmost

to assist His Majesty sincerely.

Good.

As it is said,

the rise of governance

lies in following the will of the people.

The fall of governance

lies in going against the people's hearts.

When the people abhor toil and worry,

I provide them leisure and joy.

When the people detest poverty and lowliness,

I enrich and elevate them.

Go ahead.

When the people fear danger and downfall,

I ensure their safety.

When the people dread extinction,

I nurture and multiply them.

Good, very well.

Qi has finally spoken up.

Qi.

Your Majesty has grown up.

Finally.

You have started to speak.

Good.

Aunt, come here.

His Majesty has spoken.

Runing.

I pay my respect, Empress Dowager.

Rise, rise now.

This is a family gathering.

No need for formalities.

The lily sachet you sent to me,

I have accepted it.

It's just that I prefer the nocturnal sachet.

Runing.

You didn't return it this time.

You are giving me face. I've taken note of it.

I will gift you the nocturnal sachet.

By heavenly decree,

[Yan Mansion] here comes the edict.

I have heard that Yan Xing, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Justice,

possesses both virtue and talent, has solved many strange cases.

Hereby is specially promoted to the Director of the Ministry of Justice.

Granting her the plaque inscribed by my own hand of Expert Detective

[Expert Detective of Dacang] to display her achievements.

Respect this!

Thank you, His Majesty.

Director Yan, please rise.

We were delivering the imperial decree

around Xiang'an City

for quite a while.

We went to the Shen Mansion.

Unexpectedly, you are here in your maternal home.

Thank you.

Hot tea has been prepared.

Please come in.

I must rush back to the palace,

so won't disturb you any further.

Thank you.

Please.

Liuniang.

You are truly capable.

A raise in salary?

[Expert Detective of Dacang]

What a glory to the family!

What a glory!

What a glory!

This is the first plaque

since His Majesty

assumed the throne.

Really?

After I died,

I could meet my ancestors

with pride.

Father.

Why would you

say such things?

Although I really want

to keep this plaque in the Yan Mansion,

in a few days,

you should still take this plaque

back to the Shen Mansion.

Now that you are married.

You can't always stay here.

Father, I have already divorced Shen Du.

There's no reason to return to the Shen Mansion.

Father, do you

want to drive me out?

Look. Why would I possibly mean that?

You are just having a quarrel.

It's easy to get over.

You can't just stay here

and not solve it.

Right?

Look.

After she become the Director,

her temper has grown even bigger.

[Discerning the Finest Details]

My lord.

Congratulations.

Your salary has increased again.

I don't really care.

- Right, right. - Mere material possessions.

As an official,

I do not seek fame or profit,

but to cultivate myself,

harmonize the family,

and govern the nation.

Yes, yes, you are right.

But then again,

the reason you received the reward this time

is that

you were acting righteously.

Right? Look.

Back then,

Great Chief

and Director Yan

were deep in peril,

all others shunned to avoid it.

Only you

bravely stepped out and offered help.

I truly

admire you.

Really!

My lord.

Feng.

Do you know why this is?

I don't know.

I have been an official for twenty years.

The most valuable experience

is…

What is it?

Please tell me.

Burning a cold stove.

How to burn

the cold stove?

When?

That's all knowledge.

Burning a cold stove?

- Feng. - Qi Yeyun, constable of the Ministry of Justice,

is here to report for duty.

- Yeyun? - Correct.

I am the head of the Constable Department, Feng Gui.

Come on, everyone.

Drop everything you're doing.

Come over and meet the new guy.

Hurry.

Hurry.

Well,

we all warmly welcome you

to join us,

the Constable Department.

Welcome, welcome.

Welcome, welcome.

Burning a cold stove.

Alright, alright, get to your business.

This Qi Yeyun

calls Great Chief brother-in-law.

It's certainly a hot stove.

No need to burn at all.

You have a long way to go.

[Lu's Pawnshop]

Very well.

Comfortable?

Comfortable. My girl is massaging my back,

of course, it's comfortable.

Father. Well,

this worker is working hard, right?

Of course.

It's good.

Girl, our pawnshop

can never keep the worker

for long.

Luckily, we have

such a diligent son-in-law.

Langxing.

Come, sit down and rest for a bit.

Have some tea.

It's okay, I can continue working.

I'm not tired.

Langxing.

I think

you're missing a set of golden armor.

I'll order a set for you.

No, no need.

You already gave me

a golden cap last time.

I really don't need it.

Just accept it.

Let me tell you.

Golden armor

suits you best.

Well…

It's too valuable.

I really can't accept it.

Do you want it or not?

Yes.

Right. Just accept whatever my father gives you.

My girl is right.

You must accept

whatever an elder gives.

Exactly.

Yes.

I-I'm going to get back to work.

Empress Dowager.

The reconstruction of the Ming Hall

has been completed.

The melody composed by Mr. Jin for the Ming Hall's reconstruction

only needs the ending to be completed.

I have already asked the palace musicians

to complete the final section of the melody.

Empress Dowager, please appreciate it.

Good, I trust

you.

This piece is only lacking a title.

I'm not talented enough.

Please grant it a title, Empress Dowager.

All things prepared,

it's a golden age.

Let's name it the Melody of Golden Age.

I think,

when the Ming Hall reopens,

I wish to invite the civilians of Xiang'an

to visit inside,

to share the joy,

and enjoy

the Melody of Golden Age.

[Yan Mansion]

Great Chief.

Liuniang said

since you've divorced,

don't disturb her anymore.

Great Chief, please return.

I take my leave.

Great Chief.

This is the ninth time you've been turned back.

- I think… - I think…

this gift isn't good enough,

not enough to move her.

Liuniang.

This is already the ninth time.

Great Chief has shown great sincerity.

Don't be mad at him.

Go back home.

Yes. Liuniang,

he is the Great Chief

and staying all day outside our house.

With people coming and going,

it doesn't look decent.

Just show some mercy.

Mother.

Caiwei.

Why do you all speak for him?

It's he who wanted the divorce,

I simply fulfilled his wish.

Besides,

I didn't ask him to stay outside the house all day.

Wait, where are you going?

To eat.

I'm hungry, Mother.

Then I'll go make you the meal.

Take it easy. Be careful.

Jing Lin.

Let's go buy some more.

Really?

Everyone in the Xiang'an City knows about it.

Great Chief Shen has been turned away nine times.

Yet he still went

for the tenth time.

It's really funny.

Isn't this Great Chief Shen?

Nowadays, White Ghost

[Bihong Gold Workshop] is always giving gifts in vain.

Can this tenth attempt to woo his wife succeed?

They have bought quite a few gifts,

and they're rather expensive.

- This time it should be okay. - Great Chief.

I've bought the latest ear ornaments

and hairpins.

Take this.

I…

I really can't carry any more.

Why don't you get more people to carry it?

We are not short of people.

You don't understand.

The less people know about this, the better.

Everyone in the entire Xiang'an City

knows about it.

No one knows about it.

We support you, Great Chief.

Get the girl back soon.

- No one knows about it. - We support you.

Great Chief, we support you.

That's good.

All the men of Xiang'an City

must take him as a warning.

They have to know

they must not offend their wives.

Empress Dowager.

Director Yan is here.

Come in.

Yes.

She's here.

Greetings to you, Empress Dowager.

Rise and speak.

Come closer.

Today, I summoned you to the palace.

Firstly,

the festival is coming soon.

Madam Xu and I

want to have a casual chat with you.

Secondly,

there is good news for you.

Empress Dowager has already issued an imperial decree,

ordering to reform the system of taking official positions through family lineage

to select officials based on their merits.

Regardless of background,

everyone can have an equal opportunity

to pursue honor and distinction

and serve the country.

All the scholars from humble backgrounds

must be grateful for your cherishing of talent,

and study diligently to serve the country.

Move on, next one.

Raise your hand.

Move on.

Turn around.

Good.

Pan Chi.

It really is you.

What's wrong?

Can't I take the exam?

Of course, you can.

Here,

we welcome candidates from all over the world.

But I heard that

someone

is not interested in becoming an official.

Indeed, one will become

like the one he always hangs out with.

You're starting to sound

more and more like Lu Chuichui.

Are you saying Chuichui is bad?

You said that.

- You! - I'm not interested in being an official.

I just have to prove myself with this exam,

and check

whether your exam

is truly fair or not.

Alright, then take the exam

and check carefully.

There's something

I have long wished to do.

But

I can't do it.

In my heart,

I have never forgotten Chen Baiyi.

On behalf of Chen Baiyi

and scholars from humble backgrounds,

I extend thanks to you.

Director Yan.

You always think of others.

Maybe

you should think more of your own.

Me?

What do you mean?

See. I give the scholars the chance to take the exam.

What about you?

Do you think

you could give a chance

to someone around you?

There is a saying,

cherish the one around you.

Wake up.

I am here.

Mother.

Why do you wake me up early in the morning?

Today is my day off.

Get up and get dressed.

Otherwise, we'll be late for the ceremony.

What ceremony?

Come in and put the stuff well.

Be careful.

Yes, yes.

Sanniang, take it easy.

Put all the things over there.

Yes.

Be careful.

Be careful, don't bump or knock anything.

Be careful, put them down gently.

Mother.

What's the matter?

Well,

I

went to the ancestral hall to consult our ancestors

and went to the temple to find the priestess.

They all said

that you got married

without the proper ceremonies,

and somehow

got divorced.

This is a great disrespect,

and a serious taboo.

You've deceived the ancestors

and the Matchmaker God.

In the future,

you will encounter tribulations.

Mother, so you mean,

even the gods don't allow me to divorce.

No, no.

I have figured it out.

If you want to divorce, then do it.

But the tribulations must be solved.

The only way to solve them

is to go through

the entire wedding ceremony properly.

After register it to the gods,

then you can formally get a divorce.

Yes, Liuniang.

I also asked the priestess.

The tribulations aren't only bad for you,

but also bad for the Yan family.

I am also a bit scared.

Yes, Liuniang.

Look.

Caiwei is still pregnant.

You'd

better to believe it.

Rather than take it lightly.

One should always be with the one he loves.

Treating each other with mutual respect

and valuing each other.

This is what makes a lifetime happy.

From now on,

you won't be alone anymore.

I will definitely try

to help you find out the truth

This virtuous lady

is me.

With your ability,

want to flirt to me?

Bridal snatch.

Can it really work?

Yes.

What are you doing?

We're about to get married.

Who said to give my bestie

a grand wedding full of sincerity?

Changed your mind?

Of course not.

I'm just afraid of

getting scolded by her.

How can you be more rigid than

Stiffy Jiang?

What's there to be afraid of?

You should be afraid of being abandoned.

Great Chief, to marry a woman,

you should have the courage

to do it and never give up.

Great Chief.

Congratulations, Great Chief.

My wife said,

although Liuniang was reluctant,

she still sat down to do her makeup.

Great Chief, don't you still understand?

Madam is so clever.

Can she not see that today is a trap?

Since she can sit down to do her makeup,

it means she accepts it.

Exactly.

You are the Great Chief,

how can you

be that foolish?

Great Chief.

Attack.

Go.

Liuniang.

I have come to take you home.

Alright, take a look.

So pretty.

My girl is really pretty.

Beautiful.

What a perfect girl.

I really can't get enough.

You are so much like me.

Mother.

Enough.

Guys, have you figured out the answer

to the first riddle of the lantern?

A line of white egrets soar into the blue sky.

Congratulations.

You got the last riddle correctly.

Luckily, you had me, Lu Chuichui.

Otherwise, relying on you blockheads,

you would never get it right.

Yes, yes. Chuichui is right.

Our Yan family is a scholarly clan.

To marry a woman from our Yan family as a wife,

you must have outstanding talent.

The next challenge

requires composing a good poem

to express your genuine feelings.

It seems that Great Chief has reached the second challenge.

The poem challenge

is not that easy to pass.

Day by day, sick with wine in front of the flowers.

Not minding you're getting old in the mirror.

Seeing the sky at dawn and the clouds at dusk.

I miss you while walking.

I miss you while sitting.

Standing alone on a bridge, sleeves filled with wind.

After people return under the new moon.

Enjoyments and pleasures, with whom to share.

Fortunate to know you,

so we can cross and return.

Thank you for arriving in time.

Your ears are all red from the cold.

What are you doing?

I just want others to see

how close we are.

Liuniang.

I think you should go out there.

I can't stand hearing

the poem composed

by Great Chief Shen anymore.

Yes, Liuniang.

Stop him.

We are all of this age,

can't stand being tormented.

Good poem, brilliant.

You've passed.

Please, Great Chief.

This is the final challenge.

It's a martial contest.

If you want to marry my sister,

you have to beat both of us first.

Otherwise, don't even think about taking my sister away.

Great Chief, this challenge is in the bag.

Don't move, what are you doing?

Great Chief, go.

This is completely cheating.

Let Mojie and a child compete in a martial contest.

Does this count as a challenge?

Then I'll compete dancing with him?

- You've lost. - What?

They

can win against Shen Du?

I think he lost on purpose.

Oh no, Liuniang.

Shen Du has lost,

and left despondently.

Shen Du.

You are still here?

You are here.

Where can I go?

Well well, Shen Du.

You put on a show to lie to me.

I…

I am a dull husband,

can't woo such a smart wife properly.

So I had to make some tricks.

Don't blame me.

Don't let it happen again.
