[Episode 37]

You can't provide me

with a worry-free household.

Nor do you prioritize me.

You're always trying to win

and show off.

You're not a good partner for me.

What did you say?

So this is how you think of me?

Do you truly believe you are a good wife?

You never stop thinking

about cases.

Have you ever considered

what kind of wife

a man would want?

You took your sister's place

and married me as a spy, to begin with.

Don't forget what we've agreed on.

It's been three months.

I, Shen Du,

am determined to divorce you.

In that case,

let's divorce.

From now on,

I will go separate ways

from you.

I will not have anything

to do with you.

Nor will I have anything to do with

the honor or disgrace of your family.

Liuniang.

Liuniang.

What's wrong? You look so pale.

What happened?

Mother.

Liuniang.

Liuniang.

Shen Du.

Shen Du.

Shen Du.

Liuniang, you woke up.

You had a high fever.

I was so worried.

Where are you going?

I'm going to find Shen Du.

You're not allowed.

Why would you go to that man?

You braved the snow to cry injustice for him.

What about him? He was finally released

but he didn't care about you.

He even…

Even what?

What happened to your throat?

Even what?

He even brought the divorce paper.

Mother.

Where is the divorce paper?

Where is the divorce paper, Mother?

Where is the divorce paper?

Where is the divorce paper, Mother?

Where is the divorce paper?

Where is the divorce paper?

Where is the divorce paper?

Mother.

I still don't believe it.

Great Chief Shen seems

so upright and unyielding.

How could he

submit to the Black Fiend?

Shen Du has led the Imperial Guards

to arrest many officials

who didn't join Lai Luozhi.

The Imperial Guards have been

reduced to the hunting dogs

of the Imperial Inspectorate.

He made such a choice.

- Then our Yan family… - Mojie.

Since Shen Du has

even sent us the divorce paper,

then whatever he does from now on

has nothing to do with

our Yan family.

Under the current situation,

divorce may protect you

from the power struggle.

But Liuniang is probably going to be heartbroken.

[Changmo Pavilion]

That's not the only heartbreaking news.

She's been friends with

the Marshal of Inspectors

and Miss Yun Que.

They were executed for "committing treason"

by the Imperial Inspectorate

on the night they pleaded for her in the palace.

Liuniang.

Mr. Xu and Yun Que

are dead?

Liuniang.

You just got over the fever.

Are you out of your mind?

[The Tomb of Xu Xiangren, Marshal of Inspectors, and Yun Que]

Mr. Xu.

Yun Que.

I got you killed.

I owe you an apology.

Even if it hadn't been for you,

they would have died.

Shen Du.

Do not blame

their deaths on yourself.

You're not that important.

Xu Xiangren wanted

to find evidence of Vice Minister Lai's treason.

So he had to die.

Did you really join Lai Luozhi?

You were released on the night when Mr. Xu

and Yun Que were killed.

Did you really…

Shen Du.

What happened to you?

Have you forgotten your aspirations?

Have you forgotten your family's case

and the dozens of your relatives

who had died from injustice?

I came today to advise you

not to cause unnecessary trouble.

Think of the Yan family.

Sign the divorce paper.

Divorce me

with your blood.

For Mr. Xu and Yun Que.

For all those who died from injustice.

Shen Du.

From now on, you and I

will be strangers.

Liuniang.

Liuniang.

What happened?

We went to the Yan Mansion.

Lady Jin said you weren't home.

So Jiang Langxing and I came to look for you.

You went to the graveyard?

Mr. Xu and Yun Que

died because of me.

Liuniang.

Don't say that.

Lai Luozhi hated Marshal Xu

because he had saved me.

Yet I left.

Marshal Xu and Yun Que

passed away in peace.

I think

they must be happy in heaven.

You're hurt.

Shen Du has made up his mind

to join forces with Lai Luozhi.

The White Ghost has teamed up with Lai Luozhi?

He is no longer the Shen Du I knew.

From now on,

I have nothing to do with him.

Liuniang.

Liuniang.

[Shen Mansion]

Since you are worried about Liuniang,

why don't you talk to her?

A mother knows her daughter.

Liuniang has been independent since she was young.

It's a serious matter.

If we rush there to comfort her,

she will definitely put on a brave face

and hide her emotions

to prevent us from worrying.

Indeed.

Liuniang never lets us worry about her.

Women should never

keep all the bitterness, anger,

and sorrow to themselves.

We may end up ill.

Then let's leave her alone.

Make do over there

for the night.

If you want to stay,

there's still half a bed inside.

You can sleep on the inside.

♫ Rushed encounters in time, with shallow fates ♫

♫ The winter in warm memories ♫

♫ Never mind the destined solitary fate ♫

♫ Blazing a lifetime of splendor ♫

She became my wife

as if it was destined.

I want to tell her

that I've always

loved no one but her

from the beginning.

♫ He said he loves her ♫

You can't provide me

with a worry-free household.

Nor do you prioritize me.

You're always trying to win

and show off.

You're not a good partner for me.

It's been three months.

I, Shen Du,

am determined to divorce you.

♫ Love is pure and flawless in essence ♫

♫ Let the vast universe change ♫

♫ Let's be together ♫

Haven't she eaten anything?

Not a single bite.

She wouldn't take the medicine,

bandage the wound on the hand,

or even open the door.

What should we do?

I've just gotten divorced myself.

I've been doing so well.

Life is much better than before.

Maybe I can talk to Liuniang.

Very good.

Father.

Father, something's wrong.

I went to buy candied fruits for Liuniang

and saw Imperial Inspectorate officers

all around our mansion.

Are you sure they're from the Imperial Inspectorate?

I've been working for the Imperial Guards.

I can recognize

the scouts and spies.

The Imperial Inspectorate

is watching us.

It's a man-made disaster.

A man-made disaster.

I've served the court for years,

but I've never seen anything like this.

Things are unpredictable in the court.

Lai Luozhi is solely in charge.

Shen Du has just divorced Liuniang,

and he's sided with Lai Luozhi.

What does that mean?

What does it mean?

It means that

we are in trouble.

Your Majesty,

the Start of Spring is upon us.

We should start preparing for this year's

grand assembly of all the officials.

Here's the charter drafted by the Ministry of Personnel

and the Ministry of Rites

based on the precedents.

Officials and military commanders

will return to Xiang'an

to pay tribute and report on their duties.

However, since Your Majesty's ascension,

the annual grand assembly

has always been scheduled for the second day of the second month.

But this year,

the Empress Dowager is unwell.

Should we reschedule the ceremony for a different date?

The grand assembly

is the annual event to settle the court affairs, which involves officials

from outside the capital,

and commanders guarding the border.

It should not be easily rescheduled.

We shall proceed as usual.

If the Empress Dowager

has not recovered by then,

then I shall

accompany His Majesty

to preside over the grand assembly.

Vice Minister Lai.

Do you really intend to

stand in for the Empress Dowager

to preside over the grand assembly?

Why not?

Vice Minister Lai.

The grand assembly is the annual gathering of all officials,

which showcases the emperor's authority

and the royal family's dignity.

The Empress Dowager is regent behind the curtain

to complete the duties on behalf of His Majesty.

On what grounds will you preside over the assembly?

The Empress Dowager trusts me.

She has entrusted me to oversee

the works of all officials.

I must therefore shoulder

the responsibility of settling court affairs.

I think

Your Majesty would certainly welcome my company

to preside over the grand assembly

and receive officials and generals from all regions.

His Majesty is inviting Vice Minister Lai.

During the grand assembly,

His Majesty clearly wishes for Vice Minister Lai

to stand by his side.

That's right. The Empress Dowager allows Vice Minister Lai

to oversee all officials.

It is to be expected for him

to preside over the grand assembly.

Naturally, it is to be expected for Vice Minister Lai

to preside over the grand assembly.

You despicable beings!

You're shameless enough to tell blatant lies.

And you.

Lai Luozhi.

You aspire to overstep your bounds.

Your intentions to steal the throne

are blatant!

Great Chief Shen.

You haven't said a word today.

Why don't you tell me

how the Imperial Guards should deal with someone

who insults a high official in court

based on your regulations?

Those who insult high officials

shall be put in our prison

for the water torture.

Alright, let's proceed with that.

Shen Du, you…

Great Chief Shen.

Since when did you

submit yourself to Lai Luozhi?

Prime Minister Zhang.

Princess of Valor. You seem to have something against me.

Are you scared that

I would expose

your despicable dealings?

What are you talking about?

Princess of Valor and Prime Minister Zhang

colluded with the rebels of Gannandao

to plot treason.

Lai Luozhi.

Do not slender us.

Lai Luozhi.

Vice Minister Lai.

You have always suppressed officials who oppose you.

It's finally my turn today.

But evidence matters the most.

Do you think you can

invert right and wrong in broad daylight?

Evidence? Of course, there is evidence.

I've obtained the brochure

handed in by the convict Mo Qianzhi

from the Imperial Guards.

It keeps a clear record of everything,

allowing no room for your rebuttal.

You…

Am I right, Great Chief Shen?

Based on Mo Qianzhi's testimony,

the Princess of Valor colluded with the stationed troops of Gannandao.

Prime Minister Zhang let his subordinates

embezzle the funds of Gannandao.

They should be put under house arrest

for a thorough investigation.

I am a royalty.

How dare you confine me?

Where are the Imperial Personal Guards?

Imperial Personal Guards!

Princess of Valor.

Can't you tell?

Half of the people in the court of Dacang

have pledged loyalty to Lai Luozhi.

Given your status,

you two should walk out

to keep some dignity.

Do I have to call the Imperial Guards

and the Imperial Inspectorate Officers

to arrest you two?

Shen Du, you traitor!

You actually colluded with the Black Fiend.

All of you

treacherous scoundrels

who invert right and wrong.

You shall perish.

You shall perish.

Who would have thought?

I wear my heart on my sleeve

to repay the kindness of His Majesty and the Empress Dowager.

Yet I'm slandered by these

ignorant people.

Now that I shoulder

heavy responsibilities, I can only

do my utmost to fulfill the task

regardless of what others say about me.

Am I right?

Great Chief Shen?

Well.

Shall we proceed with

the grand assembly as discussed?

What are you doing?

How dare you come here

as a mere nobody from a humble background?

You've tarnished the reputation of our Hongwen School.

We must make things right.

I earned

my place here through the examination.

Knowledge does not distinguish between noble and humble.

Why would you bully someone like me?

You're just a dog we let in

by opening the door.

Do you really believe

you are equal with the noble classes?

Remember.

A dog is a dog even if

it enters a house.

Vice Minister Lai

isn't from the noble classes.

But you people from the noble classes

flatter and fawn him.

It looks like you're thrilled to be his dogs.

How dare you? Beat him up!

Stop!

Mr. Jing.

Those students from noble classes

are bullying the ones from humble backgrounds.

Hongwen School

is the top academic institution in Dacang,

where His Majesty gets educated.

You don't focus on your studies

and pick up fights instead.

What a disgrace.

I…

It's them.

Yeah, it's him.

He's the one stirring up trouble

and distracting us from our studies.

Yeah, it's him.

It's him causing trouble.

Mr. Jing, that's not it,

It's them.

Since you've been

bothering your schoolmates,

reflect on yourself

in our prison.

How did you Imperial Guards end up like this?

Are you really siding with the treacherous?

Great Chief Shen

escorted us here for the exam,

saying that Hongwen School wouldn't discriminate against poor scholars.

Now,

are you telling me that

we're wrong to seek education

as students

from humble backgrounds?

You can't judge the situation

and act accordingly.

Yes, you're wrong.

Take him away.

How dare he stand against us?

- Totally. - He deserves it.

Step aside.

Step aside.

People call you the White Ghost

and me the Black Fiend.

Now we're strolling

on the street side by side.

It feels quite special.

The street is so spacious.

Can't you people

walk properly?

Do you have to dash about

and bully the people?

How did you inspectors let someone

block the Vice Minister's way?

Our duty as inspectors

is to guard the capital

and the safety of the people,

not to clear the streets as someone's slaves.

What an eyesore.

Great Chief Shen.

The Imperial Guards are in charge of city defense.

We don't need

these petty thieves

to be an eyesore in the city, do we?

You're right.

Shen Du.

You uphold no morality

and assist a tyrant in his oppression.

Can you justify yourself to Marshal Xu and Yun Que?

Can you justify yourself to Yan Xing?

How dare you minor inspector

challenge the Great Chief of the Imperial Guards?

It seems you've never had a taste

of the Imperial Inspectorate's urn punishment.

- Guards. - Wait.

Since he insulted me,

then I shall

handle this by myself.

I spared your life today

so you may go back

and discipline your buddies.

Tell your friends that

those memories

in the past no longer hold any value to me.

If you dare to speak disrespectfully again,

I will make sure that you pray to die

to stop suffering.

[Ministry of Justice]

Chuichui.

Jiang Langxing was humiliated

by the White Ghost on the street.

What?

Shen Du humiliated Jiang Langxing on the street?

Yeah, this is what I've heard.

It was because he and the inspectors

offended Vice Minister Lai.

Shen Du

sided with Lai Luozhi?

The Black Fiend joined hands

with the White Ghost.

Alright, Shen Du.

I'd like to see

if he's lost his conscience.

Where is the Director of the Ministry of Justice?

- Let me go. - Hurry up.

Behave.

Vice Minister Lai, what brought you

to the Ministry of Justice?

Vice Minister Lai.

Stiffy.

I'm fine.

I received a report that

the case records are incomplete

and full of loopholes.

I wonder who is responsible for this.

Well…

So Miss Lu is responsible for that.

Isn't this a huge misunderstanding?

Who dared to denounce the Ministry of Justice?

Don't they know that

Miss Lu is mine?

- Drag him out. - Understood.

If anyone dares to bother Miss Lu again,

I'll take it personally.

Don't worry, Chuichui.

No matter where you go,

you are always mine.

In your dreams.

Really?

Lai Luozhi.

You disciple man!

Let me go.

I dare you to fight me to the death.

I can crush you like an ant.

Who are you to negotiate terms with me?

What do you want, Lai Luozhi?

What's wrong?

You feel for him?

You're shedding tears for an ant.

It's so not worth it.

Actually,

I can't bear to make things hard for you.

But last night, I had trouble sleeping

and recalled

the folksong you once sang.

How about you sing it for me again?

If my mood gets better,

maybe I'm willing

to show some mercy.

Chuichui, don't listen to him.

Don't sing.

- Shut up. - Don't sing.
