[Melody of Golden Age]

[Episode 32]

I didn't mean to keep you and Mrs. Shen here today.

Don't be so nervous.

However, I do have some advice.

The criminals arrested by the Imperial Inspectorate won't be freed so easily.

You'd better think twice about what to note down,

what to report,

and what to keep to yourselves.

Don't bring trouble to yourself and your family.

[Imperial Inspectorate]

What exactly does Lai Luozhi want?

You don't trust Sun Tan?

Of course not.

It's just that this truth that's about to reveal

is too terrifying

to believe.

But just as Lai Luozhi said,

we have no solid evidence for now.

I'm afraid we won't be able

to do anything to him.

As for the testimony of Sun Tan,

what will you do about it?

I will report it as it is.

Liuniang, thank you.

Miss Lu, it's rare you've come to the Imperial Inspectorate.

I can't believe you're leaving without saying hello to me.

What's wrong?

Seems like you're suddenly scared of me again.

Have you recently

arrested many officials?

Yes.

Isn't that why you

and your nosy bestie

are here in the Imperial Inspectorate?

What do you want to do?

Do you want to hurt Yan Xing?

That's unfair.

I thought you said I was your friend too.

Then why are you only worried about me hurting her,

yet not worried if she might want to ruin my plan?

I don't have a friend like you.

Let me warn you.

You must not hurt Yan Xing.

What if something happened to Yan Xing,

I will never let you go.

It depends on

what she wants to do.

Don't you work for the Ministry of Justice?

Why did you go to the Imperial Inspectorate?

And you even went to find Madam Xu

and submitted the dossier.

You still have people from the Imperial Guards watching me?

Do you know?

The moment you stepped out of the Imperial Inspectorate today

with Sun Tan's testimony,

your head was no longer on your neck.

But Sun Tan suspects

Lai Luozhi is trying to take control

of the Gannandao fortress,

even conspiring with foreign tribes for ill intentions.

Shouldn't such important information

be reported to the Empress Dowager?

And I thought you wanted to help Sun Tan.

Sun Tan has been very helpful

to you and me in the Gannandao.

Of course I'm going to help him.

But I don't want you to be at risk.

I know you.

I'm not trying to stop you from investigating the case.

But in the future,

don't be so reckless.

Next time something comes up,

don't forget your husband is the Great Chief of the Imperial Guards.

I was just afraid it would cause you trouble.

If I were afraid of trouble,

why would I marry you as my wife?

Honey.

After the Empress Dowager

read Sun Tan's testimony,

what would she do?

I don't know.

What I did today

was what truly pisses Lai Luozhi off.

I don't even know

if I am helping Sun Tan,

or harming him.

Be true to your heart and do not worry about the future.

Since you've told on me to Yan Xing

and Xu Xiangren,

I think you know

what will happen

to you.

But you have a way to survive.

Just write me a list

of all the roving bandits

that Xu Xiangren befriended

before he became a marshal.

I promise

you can walk out of the Imperial Inspectorate alive

and even take up the position

of the next Marshal of Inspectors.

You want me to frame Marshal Xu?

This Xu Xiangren

is really an eyesore.

Do you know how Xu Xiangren

became the Marshal of Inspectors?

Back then,

he made an agreement three times with the present Empress Dowager

to steal treasures from the imperial palace.

And he managed to

steal the treasures amidst thousands of guards.

The Empress Dowager admired his talent,

so allowed him to take over Marshal Yuan's position.

With your ability,

how dare you to frame him!

What a tough man!

You haven't seen the situation clearly.

Just give me the list.

The Imperial Inspectorate will handle the rest.

It's a simple job for you,

and it's not exactly betrayal, is it?

Don't you want

to be the Marshal of Inspectors

who's commanding all inspectors?

I do.

Very much.

I really want to take the token

to command

to command all inspectors.

I'll wait for your list.

What did you steal?

None of your business.

Even you steal, you have to follow the rules.

Not only did you steal something, but also did it dirty.

- Today, I'll… - Don't hit Mr. Tan.

- You guys go. - Don't hit Mr. Tan.

We'll give you all the food.

You guys go.

He stole things for you?

Mr. Tan is kind and nice.

Without him, I would have starved to death.

- You guys go. - Don't hit him.

Don't hit him. He's a nice person.

Right. He's a nice person.

Don't hit him.

Don't steal anymore.

Come work for me.

Stop putting on a show.

You don't look rich.

Maybe you haven't stolen as much as I have.

Now I'm not skillful enough.

When I get better at it,

I could steal anything from the palace.

Alright.

Then you guys just wait.

I'm going to steal the treasure from the palace

to show you.

Be gentle.

Were these

things you stole from the palace?

I have already promised the Empress Dowager.

From now on,

I am the one who commands all the inspectors,

Marshal of Inspectors.

If you want to work for me,

then become inspectors.

I don't want to become an inspector.

What I want

to become is the Marshal of Inspectors.

- Right? - Yes. - You have ambition.

Then you have to find a way to defeat me first.

Come down.

When I become stronger one day,

I will kill you.

Fine, I promise you.

When I'm dead,

this Marshal of Inspectors's token

[Marshal of Inspectors's Token]

will be yours.

Okay.

I promise you.

I will work for you

until the day you die.

I'm not dead yet.

I'm waiting for you to get this token.

♫ Let the wind take away obsessions and lies ♫

But you're not dead yet.

How can I take your token?

♫ At least you share my joy and sorrow ♫

♫ Unraveling mystery fearlessly in this dream ♫

[Marshal of Inspectors's Token]

♫ Hand in hand with you, I wander this splendid world ♫

[Had Heaven not created Marshal Xu, all beings would be worthless]

Liuniang.

It's the document sent by the Imperial Inspectorate,

for you.

[Senior Clerk Yan, Ministry of Justice]

I thought Lai Luozhi would come looking for trouble with you.

Seeing you are fine today, I'm relieved now.

[Sun Tan Committed Suicide Out Of Fear Of His Crimes.]

Liuniang, what does it say?

Sun Tan committed suicide out of fear of his crimes.

He's dead.

Lai Luozhi.

Crap!

Mr. Xu.

It was me who caused Sun Tan's death.

Marshal Xu knew you would think this way.

So once we got the news,

we came over.

What Sun Tan wanted to say

has already been written on your memorial.

He chose to commit suicide.

One is to protect all the Jianghu comrades of Gannandao.

Two

is to protect me.

Bro.

Rest in peace.

Liuniang.

Why did you drink wine?

Come on.

Lift your foot.

Is it because of Sun Tan?

Sun Tan was a brave man.

It was me who failed to protect him.

Today, I wanted to plead for him to the Empress Dowager.

But it's still too late.

Sun Tan died for no good reason.

Take a look at this.

A letter from Pan Chi.

Pan Chi.

At this time,

why are you still jealous?

It's important.

It matters to the Shen family case.

This…

Pan Chi mentioned the great fire at the granary

and Fire Fueling Technique.

It means that the great fire at the granary

that led to the Shen family's conviction

was deliberately triggered by someone using the Fire Fueling Technique.

But the pattern on this jade pendant…

What's wrong?

This pattern was on the jade pendant

given by late Emperor to the Zhou family

when he married the Empress Dowager.

The Zhou family?

Does Pan Chi mean

that fire

was set by the Zhou family?

The one who killed the people of the Shen family

was never anyone else,

but her, Zhou Xu, the Zhou family.

The Fire Fueling Technique is the secret technique of the Huo'e Sect.

Why would it be related to the Zhou family?

Liuniang.

Would you like to go back and rest?

No.

I promised to find the truth with you.

Now we have finally found a clue.

But why would it be the Zhou family?

Great Chief.

A secret report from Gannandao.

It's the autopsy results

of those Half-faced Demons in the Gannandao.

Regarding those triangular-shaped needle marks,

upon examination, it is the slow-acting poison,

Ten-Day Poison.

As the name implies, the people who get poisoned

would die of poison ten days later.

Liuniang.

On the neck of the deceased,

there were triangular-shaped needle marks.

Yuanniang. So as Yuanniang.

Shen Du, do you remember it?

The day of the Imperial Preceptor's memorial,

I got captured by you.

I was on the mountain

investigating the Yuanniang case.

The case was closed as a crime of passion.

But when I was sorting through the dossiers,

I discovered

that on Yuanniang's body,

there were also triangular-shaped needle marks,

indicating that Yuanniang

most likely was also poisoned with the Ten-Day Poison.

Why would the Huo'e Sect target her

and even use a slow-acting poison on her?

An ordinary farmer was targeted

and poisoned with a slow-acting poison.

There's only one possibility.

She knew something she shouldn't have,

and had to be killed.

Go check if she had any special identity

or secrets.

Yes.

It seems that the granary back then

was indeed empty.

Using the Huo'e Sect's Fire Fueling Technique to burn the granary

was to cover up

the fact that the granary was empty.

This matter is likely

related to Lai Luozhi.

- And the Zhou family… - Liuniang.

Thank you.

Now it seems

that the ones causing my family to be wrongfully accused

are complicated and powerful.

We can't rush it.

Liuniang, no matter what,

I don't want you to be at risk.

Shen Du.

What time is it now?

Don't worry. Take a rest today.

You got drunk last night.

Pan Chi's letter…

It's very useful.

The secrets behind the Shen family case

are about to reveal.

Thank you, Madam.

Yuanniang, Ten-Day Poison.

Jing Lin went to investigate.

She's not just a farmer nearby,

but also used to be responsible for cleaning the Ming Hall.

Ming Hall?

Before the Imperial Preceptor died,

he'd been living in Ming Hall.

But since the Imperial Preceptor passed away,

all people related to Ming Hall

have all disappeared.

Could all this be related to the Imperial Preceptor's death?

Did the Imperial Preceptor…

After the Imperial Preceptor divined the last prophecy,

he passed away shortly after.

I have heard a rumor.

The last prophecy of the Imperial Preceptor

is that "The Phoenix Leads Nine Chicks, The World Is At Peace."

And there's a latter half unknown.

In that case,

the death of the Imperial Preceptor

might also be quite suspicious.

The death of the Imperial Preceptor

and Yuanniang,

and the disappearance of those related to Ming Hall,

are all related to that prophecy?

Madam.

Someone from the palace came to deliver an imperial decree,

saying the Empress Dowager

has summoned you to meet her alone in the palace.

I'll go with you.

The Empress Dowager asked me to go alone.

Okay, Mr. Zhong, I got it.

Ask the messenger to wait a moment.

I will change my clothes and go.

Yes.

Wait for me.

Mind the propriety.

Don't act recklessly.

And don't bring up anything related to Sun Tan anymore.

Don't mention anything related to Lai Luozhi

or the Shen family.

Alright, I got it.

When did you get so long-winded?

Madam Xu.

This is not the way to the small study.

We're not going to the small study today.

The Empress Dowager is waiting for you in the sleeping palace.

The Empress Dowager's sleeping palace?

Empress Dowager.

I pay my respect, Your Majesty.

Please rise.

Jade cake?

This is my

favorite food.

Now I can't make it.

Even eating half a piece,

I can't eat anything for half a day.

Not like you young people anymore.

Have a taste.

This jade cake

is incredibly rare,

made from rouge rice tributed from the Western Regions.

Dry it and then ground it into powder,

then combine it with lotus leaf powder.

The filling is even more complex.

The Empress Dowager does not easily reward people with this.

Have a taste

and see what's different from what's made outside the palace.

It's salty?

So whether it's this pastry or people,

just by looking at the surface,

you can't always tell

or might make mistakes.

You're so talkative.

Empress Dowager.

Empress Dowager.

In a couple of days, it will be the Start of Winter.

You must not catch a cold.

You all

think that I am old.

Empress Dowager, you are the lucky star of Dacang.

We are all wishing you

to live a long life

and bless on Dacang.

Yan Xing.

Do you know why I summoned you

this time?

I don't know.

There's something

I want to know.

Here is the first thing.

I heard

Mo Qianzhi, former Governor of Yingzhou

claimed before his death

that the Shen family case

was led by me.

Shen Du is so loyal

to you.

So am I.

Do not panic.

Rise and tell us in detail.

Mo Qianzhi did say so.

But Shen Du

has served you for many years,

how could he be fooled by a few words?

Moreover,

that Mo Qianzhi was also fooled by villains,

only then did he believe these words.

Mo Qianzhi wanted to repay his master's kindness,

and had an obsession in his heart,

wanting to find out the truth about the Shen family case.

Thus he was misled by someone

and went astray,

becoming the executioner of the Huo'e Sect.

Thus he made a grave mistake.

Here is the second thing.

The Huo'e Sect has lingered in Yingzhou for many years,

and yet not a trace of rumor leaked out.

Then does this Huo'e Sect

have power elsewhere?

Well…

I'm afraid so.

But what

they will appear on the public

is still unknown.

This Yingzhou case is an example.

If one Mo Qianzhi falls,

will there be more Mo Qianzhis to emerge?

Empress Dowager, you are diligent and love the people.

If the people live and work in peace,

there definitely won't be more

people like Mo Qianzhi emerging.

Back then,

I was in the imperial court assisting the Young Emperor,

bearing so many curses.

No one can really understand

how helpless I was.

Everyone wants to live comfortably.

But since one holds a position,

one should

shoulder the responsibilities that come with it.

As the Empress Dowager,

I am well aware of the uncertain future.

But I have never given up.

Qi was little,

as a woman, I led the officials,

there were a few men in the world who were convinced.

Yet, I was determined to make them convinced.

These years have been smooth,

and I'm not letting down the late emperor.

You are

the role model for all women in Dacang.

One more thing.

Regarding the Sun Tan's death,

I know that you

submitted the petition to the palace despite pressure.

But Sun Tan still died for no reason.

Do you think

that it was me

who let Lai Luozhi do whatever he wants?

Empress Dowager

needs Vice Minister Lai to inspect the officials.

Naturally it requires power.

But I know

everyone would make mistakes.

If there's something suspicious in the case,

I am willing to be a candid advisor,

offering straightforward advice and corrections.

Good.

What a candid advisor you are!

Yan Xing, you are frank and straightforward.

I like you.

Do you know

Lai Luozhi

paid his respects to me last night?

He mentioned many of your accomplishments.

And he even told me

to value you.

I'm flattered.

I have no dealings with Mr. Lai.

I don't know

why Mr. Lai complimented me.

I…

do not desire any reward.

I only wish to resolve the case

and find out the truth,

to bring justice to the deceased.

Alright, rise.

You have always knelt down.

Rise.

Come, come here.

Take this.

Looking at you

reminds me of when I was young.

If you are available,

come to the palace more often to chat with me, alright?

Thank you, Empress Dowager.

Have you ever heard of Ms. Shu?

The concubine

who was with the late emperor from Nanlang?

I've heard a little.

This was once the mansion given to Ms. Shu

by the later emperor.

Rumor has it

Ms. Shu fought for favor,

got killed by the Empress Dowager

at the time.

In fact, due to miss the homeland,

Ms. Shu passed away in melancholy.

In this palace,

this is another

sad story.

Now that you have the token to come and go in the imperial palace as you please.

You should understand

power comes

with great responsibility.

I feel confused.

Please advise, Madam Xu.

A few days ago, I delivered for you

the testimony of Sun Tan,

and the Empress Dowager gave no comments.

Lai Luozhi deliberately complimented you in front of the Empress Dowager.

Today, the Empress Dowager

specifically invited you here,

to give you the chance to explain.

You should understand

that in this world where men are honored above women,

the Empress Dowager must consider public opinion,

also ensure the loyalty of her officials.

I thought

that things in the world were either black or white.

But after experiencing so much,

I have come to understand a little.

The Empress Dowager intentionally shows you favor.

Firstly, because she truly values you.

And secondly, of course, for Shen Du.

And you were recommended by Prime Minister Zhang

to marrying into the Shen family.

Now Lai Luozhi admires you.

It's hard not to wonder

if you're an informant

between black and white.

I'm Yan Xing, Chief Director of the Ministry of Justice.

Greetings to Mr. Lai.

You've spent much time with Shen Du,

I do not know about the others,

but you've become quite reckless.

I am confused.

Even the case

that Dali Supreme Court avoids,

yet you dare

to take on the presiding judge.

I guess it's because

you have the Imperial Guards backing you.

And even those roving bandits

want to help you.

But no matter what you did,

the Sun Tan case

has no effect on me.

You should understand the situation clearly.

Thank you for the reminder, Mr. Lai.

I have no great talent or ambitions.

I naturally do things

without sufficient consideration.

Well,

I really admire your sister,

being adept with both the pen and the sword.

Really amazing.

Right.

That day, when my husband and I

were strolling on the streets of Yingzhou,

my husband said he saw your sister.

Mrs. Shen, what are you talking about?

It's been cold recently,

my sister has been resting at home all along.

A few days ago,

she went out together

with several officials' family members.

Why would she have gone to Yingzhou?

Mrs. Shen, if you want to frame someone,

you have to get solid evidence.

If Shen Du can't teach you well,

maybe come to my Imperial Inspectorate,

I will certainly

teach you properly.

Is that so?

Well, I wish your sister

good health.

I take my leave.

Right.

Prince Xian

invites officials to the Dongzhi Festival banquet.

I guess

you have also received the invitation, right?

Mrs. Shen.

See you at the Prince Xian's mansion.

[Chengtian Gate]

Shen Du.

Someone in the palace has sent me a message,

saying that Lai Luozhi intercepted you on the way.

So I rushed over immediately.

Did he do anything to you?

Your ears are all red from the cold.

You usually complain that the carriage is slow,

so why did you take the carriage today?

It's cold, and riding a horse is cold.

I never knew

that you were so considerate.

How's today?

It's the Empress Dowager's private token.

Madam Xu reminded me of something.

Power comes

great responsibility.

If I'm correct,

while the Empress Dowager asked the Imperial Guards

to monitor the Imperial Inspectorate and Lai Luozhi,

Lai Luozhi has also received a secret decree

to monitor the Imperial Guards.

No wonder today

Lai Luozhi especially waited for me at the palace gate,

and even deliberately complimented me

in front of the Empress Dowager.

I'm sure he guessed it too.

Then, at the banquet at the Prince Xian's mansion,

will Lai Luozhi secretly do anything evil?

Don't worry.

I will protect you.

Let's go.
