[Episode 15]

[Princess of Valor Mansion]

Mr. Zhang is here.

- Stand still. Don't move. - Wait.

Stop it. Let him go.

Trying to kidnap someone in broad daylight?

We're not kidnapping.

I have sent someone

to invite him over as a guest.

Princess of Valor.

Since he is a guest,

he should be free to come and go.

But it's obvious

that he doesn't want to be a guest.

Just a personal matter.

I didn't expect it to get you to come.

I wonder what relationship you have

with Mr. Han.

Your Highness.

I am ordered to offer my condolence

to the Great Chief couple.

And I happened to hear Mrs. Shen

mention it.

The Empress Dowager has always valued you.

This is

for the good of you.

I hope you could think it over.

Since you have said so,

it would be inappropriate for me to insist on holding him here as a guest.

I shall take my leave.

Mrs. Shen.

I have made it clear last time

that you might protect Mr. Han temporarily,

but can you protect him for a lifetime?

Great Chief, someone has reported

that a number of moth-shaped jades

suddenly appeared in the ruins of Jinxiu Workshop.

And someone appeared. Quite creepy.

Let's go to Jinxiu Workshop.

It's Mr. Kong from Jinxiu Workshop.

But hasn't Mr. Kong already died?

Is it a person or a ghost?

Can it be that the dead really can come back to life?

You saw it just now.

Is it really the work of ghosts?

I never believed in ghosts.

If any,

someone's been up to something.

Let's investigate carefully

and will certainly find some clues.

I've found it.

The divine sign appears, revealing precious jewels.

This moth-shaped jade must be a divine one.

- There must be more. Keep searching. - Definitely more. Search.

I found one.

It's marvelous.

I found another one.

[Shen Mansion]

I always feel that

there are two forces

behind this case.

One of them

wants to quietly erase the Jinxiu Workshop case

in low profile.

While another one

wants to stir up trouble by taking advantage of this.

Moth-shaped jade appeared.

The master reveals his spirit.

The dead come back to life.

As if all these bizarre events

were scheduled to happen together

in this month.

Whoever stirs up such a commotion

in the Imperial City

is definitely not a serial murderer

or an ordinary warlock.

There must be a big shot behind it.

But I can't figure out

what this big shot

is up to.

Creating a god.

Creating a god?

The case now is already

beyond your control.

There's a case within the case,

and it's intricately connected to the court's strife.

What's the purpose

of creating a god then?

Any thoughts?

My only thought right now

is the only advice I can give you.

Stop investigating.

Don't get involved in the trouble.

Boring.

I thought you had some profound insights.

I must continue to investigate the case.

Childish.

Don't put yourself in danger.

Are

you concerned about me?

What do you think?

In any case, you are now

Mrs. Shen.

Behave yourself.

Don't get involved in trouble.

I think you're concerned about me.

You don't let me go.

I must get to the bottom of it.

Madam.

Lu Chuichui and I

have an appointment to visit the silk store in the south of the city.

I've heard they've received a batch of new cloths.

In red,

yellow, black,

and sophora yellow.

The tie-dyeing looks really good.

If I go too late, I won't get any.

Maybe you should go back.

Don't disturb Great Chief.

He didn't rest well last night, just let him sleep a little longer.

Alright, hurry up and go.

Madam, where are you going so early in the morning?

Lu Chuichui and I

have an appointment to visit the silk store in the south of the city.

I've heard they've received a batch of new cloths.

In red,

yellow, black, and sophora yellow.

The tie-dyeing looks really good.

If I go too late, I won't get any.

I'm going to the silk store in the south of the city.

I've heard they've received a batch of new cloths.

- Mr. Zhong, what happened? - Yellow,

- black, and sophora yellow. - Had another quarrel with the Great Chief?

- If I go too late, I won't get any. - What are you talking about?

Want some sugar cakes? I just made them.

I am about to deliver them to the Great Chief.

No, it's a made-up lie.

What?

Mrs. Shen left the house

this early in the morning,

must have something urgent to do.

Recently, Great Chief

hasn't had much appetite for breakfast,

so I made some sugar cakes.

Try them too.

Jing Lin.

Great Chief.

Go keep an eye on Yan Xing.

With her temper,

she definitely won't listen to me.

Yes.

There's one person missing from this case.

The witness who found Mrs. Chen's body.

Besides Chen Shoujie, there was another person.

She made personally

basin mutton, smoked chicken,

baked flatbread and cake.

She even gave me a bowl of wine.

Madam treated us so well.

She made personally

basin mutton, smoked chicken,

baked flatbread and cake.

The testimony of Chen Shoujie's servant

is exactly the same

as that recorded by the officials

when they questioned him.

The testimonies are identical, not a single word differs.

He probably memorized what to say beforehand.

Chen Shoujie.

Where is your servant?

Fire moth!

Fire moth!

Fire moth!

Fire moth!

- Fire moth! - What fire moth?

Fire moth!

Fire moth!

Fire moth!

Fire moth!

It's you.

The day Mrs. Chen got killed,

what exactly did you see?

Why would you forge the testimony?

He seems to be waiting for me?

[Mingsheng Temple]

Mingsheng Temple.

Sounds familiar.

Excuse me,

did you see

someone coming in?

Excuse me.

Help!

The dead come back to life.

The dead come back to life.

The dead…

You cannot die.

You still haven't told me who the murderer is.

- You cannot die. - Who are you?

And who are you?

Why did you kill him?

I didn't kill him.

I saw it with my own eyes.

Don't try to deny it.

I really did not kill him.

Guards.

I didn't kill him, I just…

Stop!

Greetings, Princess Runing.

Princess Runing?

[Ministry of Justice] Mingsheng Temple.

No wonder it sounds so familiar.

Princess Runing

involving in the Jinxiu Workshop Case

stays at Mingsheng Temple.

Mr. Xu.

What? Don't you want your head anymore?

Don't you want your hands anymore?

Why would I be that foolish

to be set up?

I am really so foolish.

What's wrong?

I think

I got this powder

in the Mingsheng Temple.

It looks like the suspicious powder

around Jinxiu Workshop.

I need to calm down.

There must be some connection here.

There must be something I've missed.

Don't be anxious.

There is someone out there who is more anxious than you.

I've been following her all the way.

But when I reached the outside of Chen Shoujie's Mansion,

my horse seemed to get frightened.

After I got to Mingsheng Temple,

Princess Runing has already…

Are you sure that after coming out from the Chen Mansion,

Yan Xing didn't look right?

Yes, I called her several times

and she didn't respond at all, as if she were bewitched.

And she ran after something.

I don't care who it is.

Whoever dares to harm my people,

I won't show any mercy.

But Madam was taken by Princess Runing,

I'm afraid this matter would not be that simple.

There are rules, you can't go in.

How could Yan Xing possibly have killed someone?

You really can't go in.

How is Yan Xing doing?

She's fine and just ate two steamed buns.

Right, she said

not to tell her family

about this matter yet.

Who set Yan Xing up?

You must investigate this thoroughly.

We also believe Yan Xing won't kill anyone.

But the one who arrested her is the Princess Runing.

This matter

might not be that easy to investigate.

What's not that easy?

With solid evidence here,

it is natural

to punish a murderer.

You!

Mr. Lai.

I wonder what brings you here to the Ministry of Justice's prison

at this late hour.

The Mingsheng Temple case

involves the Princess Runing.

The Empress Dowager wants to interrogate

the murderer, Yan Xing.

What are you waiting for? Take her.

Yes.

Wait!

What do you want to do, Great Chief?

Do you intend to shield your wife,

obstruct the interrogation

and go against the law?

The Imperial Inspectorate breaks into the Ministry of Justice's prison.

Is this by the emperor's decree?

Or are you

regarding the law as nothing?

The Imperial Inspectorate has always

serves the Empress Dowager sincerely.

Great Chief,

you are slandering me.

Regarding today's matter,

I must take action personally,

in order not to let down

the Empress Dowager.

I will personally investigate this matter thoroughly.

Vice Minister Lai, please leave.

Guard this place well.

If anyone dares approach,

consider it an act of jail delivery

and kill.

Understood.

Unexpectedly,

you truly trust

that Mrs. Shen is not the murderer.

But I wonder

what the Empress Dowager will react when she knows about this tomorrow.

Whether she will be moved by the deep affection between you two,

or ask me to carry out the public execution.

One night.

Great Chief,

please

cherish the night.

Go.

Come again tomorrow.

In the dead of night,

- what are you doing? - Old Wu.

Shut up and come with me.

Can't you wait until tomorrow?

Great Chief.

Jing Lin.

You saw with your own eyes

that after Yan Xing came out of the Chen Mansion,

as if chasing someone,

she rode all the way to the west of the city.

Yes.

Yan Xing said,

she discovered the Chen family servant forging testimony,

so she went to the Chen Mansion.

But she found he was trying to flee,

so chased him all the way to the Mingsheng Temple.

That's right, that's what Yan Xing said.

Then something's wrong.

What's wrong?

Jing Lin, lift your foot.

I see.

The west woods are muddy.

If it were a fast horse galloping,

the hem of the pants couldn't be this clean.

I must have soiled my soles on the way to Mingsheng Temple

chasing Madam.

But the soles of the Chen family servant are spotless.

Then how did the body appear at the Mingsheng Temple?

Could this scent be…

The Mingsheng Temple case

has many doubts.

No one interrogates the suspect until tomorrow.

But if…

If Yan Xing suffers in the prison,

I will hold you responsible.

Great Chief.

What should we investigate next?

The source of the mistake.

Not entering samsara, undying.

[Like a moth to a flame. Live at dawn, die at dusk.]

[Like a moth to a flame. Live at dawn, die at dusk. Not entering samsara, undying.]

This powder is similar to the one that appeared in the Jinxiu Workshop.

Did

Madam fall into a trap right here?

Fire moth!

What was it before?

Great Chief.

There doesn't seem to be any signs of rummaging or fighting.

So much blood.

Looks like this is where the murderer killed.

How did the victim end up at the Mingsheng Temple after then?

[It's a box.]

Great Chief, this is the whereabouts of Prince Xian last night.

[Prince Xian meets with Princess Runing at the Mingsheng Temple]

As expected.

You sent someone to spy on the Prince Xian.

If they find out,

- I'm afraid… - It's for emergency.

I need to meet

this Princess Runing myself.

I'm Shen Du, the Great Chief of the Imperial Guards.

Greetings, Princess Runing.

Great Chief Shen,

you are the renowned White Ghost.

Today,

who do you want to take away here?

Your Highness, you misunderstand.

Today I have a favor to ask.

Don't be kidding.

I am no longer a princess,

but a commoner.

Great Chief, I can't help you with anything. Please leave.

Your Highness,

please hear me out.

If it is an affair of the court,

it has nothing to do with me.

Don't tell me about it.

It is my personal affair.

A personal affair?

Yesterday, my wife was set up by someone.

She broke into the Mingsheng Temple and got caught.

I hope you could show some mercy.

I can't believe you would

come to beg me for your wife.

You are very different from

what I heard about you.

Do you want me to release your wife?

I want you to tell me the truth.

What do you mean?

Are you suggesting that I have slandered your wife?

Naturally, you did not intend to do so.

But if you want to protect someone,

you might hide some part of information.

Nonsense!

I am tired. You may leave.

At the time of the incident,

was there really only you in the Mingsheng Temple,

without anyone else?

The Empress Dowager has confined you here.

If she learns that you met Prince Xian secretly,

I wonder what she thinks.

Are you threatening me?

I only seek the truth.

He just came to visit

his lonely aunt,

brought some items

and have a cup of tea.

We never criticize state affairs,

or have any scheme.

It's a courtesy thing between relatives.

Can't we do so?

Prince Xian values family ties.

But people on the outside may not necessarily think it that way.

Sometimes,

one word can kill a person.

Your Highness, please tell me the truth

and clear my wife's name.

Open it.

I didn't actually see your wife kill anyone.

When I rushed over upon hearing the commotion,

only she and the body were left in the hall.

I didn't want others to find out

that Prince Xian was here,

so I told him to leave through the back door.

Later, upon inspecting the back door,

traces of forced entry were discovered.

Among the pile of items brought by Prince Xian,

I found this box.

But I don't know where it came from.

Thank you for telling the truth.

Sorry for offending you.

Great Chief, be careful.

If anything happened to Prince Xian,

I would inform the Empress Dowager

of your spy on the royals.

Do you think

that I would be that bold

to do so without permission?

May there be peaceful days ahead.

Don't you want to know

the truth behind the Jinxiu Workshop case from years ago?

What can I do then?

The dead

can never come back.

The dead are gone

and have found peace.

Just a word to comfort the living.

No one dared to investigate

the truth of that case back then.

What about today?

I promise you

that I would get to the bottom of the case

and give you the truth.

Good, then I'll wait for the truth.

Prince Xian.

Mingsheng Temple is a place of dispute.

If the Empress Dowager knew

that you have been there,

she would certainly accuse you

of harboring treasonous intentions.

Give a dog a bad name,

then hang him.

Because of a piece of clothing,

Aunt got involved in the Jinxiu Workshop case.

Prince Xian, mind your words.

Mind your words.

You just did a disaster relief job well,

which pleased the Empress Dowager.

Do not do anything

to displease the Empress Dowager.

Do not neglect minor conduct,

lest you suffer a great loss.

Shen Du has known about this,

yet did not report it.

He is quite calculating.

It is already light.

Why hasn't Great Chief returned yet?

It's about time.

Take her.

How stubborn you are.

I remember back then

you were caught by Shen Du.

But now you listen to him.

Empress Dowager has decreed,

ordering you to take the suspect at noon.

The time has not yet arrived.

Don't ever take anyone.

Inspector.

How dare you to stop the Imperial Inspectorate from handling case.

I want to see

how powerful

you are.

Vice Minister Lai, you're quite arrogant,

but seem a bit too hasty.

I should do my best

for the Empress Dowager.

Empress Dowager has decreed.

The Mingsheng Temple case is fraught with numerous doubts.

Now it's transferred to the Imperial Guards to take full responsibility

to investigate.

Great Chief Shen.

You really act fast.

Retreat.

Why hasn't she come out yet?

Bless her.

Come out now.

Liuniang, you've finally come out.

I was so worried.

Come on.

I'm glad that you could come out safe and sound.

You!

You always get yourself in during investigating the cases.

But I'm glad that you could come out safe and sound.

Do you have any idea how worried I was

when I heard you'd been arrested for murder?

Come on.

Get rid of the bad luck. Go around.

I got blessed.

The case has been cleared up

and then I got released.

If Great Chief didn't

go to Princess Runing

to explain the situation,

and find the box used for transporting the body

from the one who framed you in the woods behind the Mingsheng Temple.

Do you think you could come out so easily?

He went to find Princess Runing?

What did you just say?

The box used for transporting the body

was thrown into the woods?

Something's wrong.

What's wrong?

You must have been scared.

It's all right now.

Right. Mr. Xu and Jiang Langxing

have gone to pursue new clues.

I heard that the dead servant of the Chen family

had been stealing the Chen family assets

while Chen Shoujie was dull.

Later, he got caught by Mrs. Chen,

so he betrayed his master

and colluded with someone

to kill her.

Unfortunately, he's dead now.

Yan Xing.

Great Chief, are you here to take Liuniang back?

Back?

I'm all fired up to investigate the case

and clear my name now.

What are you doing?

You're quitting.

We've reached this point.

Even I'm quitting now, can I stay out of it?

And,

the body of that servant of the Chen family

should be at the Ministry of Justice.

I must find clues from his body.

When I say no, I mean no.

The murderer used that servant of the Chen family

to lure me to the Mingsheng Temple,

obviously leading me

to suspect Princess Runing.

Princess Runing has not left the Mingsheng Temple for many years.

Who wants to drag her down into this?

Enough.

Are you asking me to quit

because it's related to the royals?

Leave this matter to me. I will handle it well.

I just want to know the truth.

Since you

are hesitant and fearful of the powerful,

fine, I'll investigate this case myself.

Great Chief, you

can just pursue your career.

So that's what you think of me.

Aren't you always afraid of being implicated by others?

Then let's divorce right now.

So you don't have to write

a confession later.

Liuniang.

What should we do?

Where are you going?

To do the autopsy.

Shen Du has examined the body before.

The soles of his shoes did not have any forest mud on them.

He was sent

to the Mingsheng Temple after he died.

What? Did you find anything?

Come and smell this.

This is the scent of something used to slow down the decay of a body.

Long before I arrived at Chen Shoujie's mansion,

he had already died.

What happened after then,

although I witnessed them myself,

I'm not sure

if it's true.

Are you suggesting

everything you saw might be an illusion?

What is that?

Or what kind of drug

could manipulate the mind like this?

The world is vast,

there are a lot of things

that are beyond our grasp.

And,

what concerns me more is

the method used on this servant's body

to delay the death time

is the same as what Mrs. Tang used.

Do you think

there is a way to bring the dead back to life?

You mean Chen Huo'e

might bring the dead back to life

as others said?

Yes.

I don't think so.

So I have to find out the truth.

So you quarreled with your husband

and ran away from home?

I am just afraid

that without White Ghost's protection,

what if you get bullied?

What am I afraid of?

I still have you guys.

If you go home and your mother finds it out,

she will definitely scold you.

Don't worry.

I already know where to go.

[Historical Archive]

This is where the Ministry of Justice

keeps case files.

I can't believe

that no clues can be found.

- Clerk Yan. - Mr. Ji.

Why do you come to the Historical Archive so late?

Mr. Ji, I want to check on

every record before and after

the Jinxiu Workshop case.

You've been in charge of the Historical Archive for years.

Do you know where it is?

Jinxiu Workshop.

It's been some years.

Perhaps over there, you can take a look.

Thank you.

I've smelled

this scent somewhere before.

Clerk Yan.

Mind the fire.

Thank you.

I will be careful.

Aren't you always afraid of being implicated by others?

Then let's divorce right now.

So you don't have to write

a confession later.

Mother.

Orange.

The branches of the orange tree outside the wall

just happened to fall into the garden.

I know you like oranges,

so I picked them for you.

Have you written the things

I told you to?

I don't know how,

nor can I write it.

My father has been upright all his life.

He has never done the slightest thing

against the Shen family's precepts.

My father was framed by others.

How can I admit to those unfounded crimes

on behalf of my father?

Shut up.

You have a criminal father.

If you do not draw a clear line with the Shen family,

then you will have no hope. You…

But how can I live ignobly,

allowing my father to be reviled?

Rather so,

I would rather, like my father,

die to prove my integrity.

But if even you die,

then this unjust case

will truly end.

Shen Du.

Do you really want them

never rest in peace

in the underworld?

If you don't write that confession,

then from now on,

don't call me your mother again.

To clear the name of your father

and the Shen family,

no matter how difficult

and dangerous it is,

you must go on.
