[Melody of Golden Age]

[Episode 11]

Liuniang.

Well, you!

Your words just now

indicate your loyalty

to the Ministry of Justice.

It's so touching.

But in front of Vice Minister Lai,

you can't say so.

He is the Black Fiend.

My lord.

Yes. Liuniang,

I am still frightening.

Do you really think

you are a tigress?

T-That's the Black Fiend.

Even you are the tigress,

he could still kill you alive.

So, why would you provoke him?

Princess of Valor is here.

Greetings, Princess of Valor.

Greetings, Princess of Valor.

Mrs. Shen, you are wise and smart.

You are capable of investigating cases

and managing household affairs well.

What

a rare female talent!

Our dynasty encourages women to become officials.

Women can also be generals or prime ministers.

Mrs. Shen.

You are really a role model.

Thank you, Princess of Valor.

May I know

why you come here?

Last night, Chen Huo'e came back to life.

This morning,

Vice Minister Lai immediately went to the Empress Dowager

to request the authority to investigate the case.

This case is complicated.

I think the Ministry of Justice

doesn't want to get involved either.

This case

was handled by the Imperial Guards,

and now it is being re-investigated by Vice Minister Lai.

The Ministry of Justice naturally has no right to investigate

or inquire.

Yan Xing

is a clerk of the Ministry of Justice,

but also the wife of the Great Chief.

I hear that you

are quite skilled at managing your husband.

If you

can persuade your husband

to not get involved in this case,

and you can restrain your own curiosity

to remain as a mere observer,

I am very willing

to facilitate a good match

and personally ask the Empress Dowager

to bestow a marriage

for your third sister

and Han Shiyuan.

I am quite busy.

I hope you could reply soon, alright?

Liuniang. Yan Liuniang.

You had nothing to do

with that case.

All you have to do is

to persuade the Great Chief.

Then your Yan family

can obtain two marriages

bestowed by the Empress Dowager.

What an honor

to your family!

What are you hesitating for?

Why didn't you just say yes at once?

Princess Yong'an and Vice Minister Lai

obviously do not want

the Imperial Guards and the Ministry of Justice to be involved in this case.

But the more they do this,

the more guilty they appear, don't they?

And, logically speaking,

Princess Yong'an

has just been cleared her name

of the Buddha case.

Why would she be in such a hurry

to get involved in this case?

Liuniang.

This is clearly a big trap.

We should avoid it.

Are you even thinking of jumping in?

- Chuichui. - Yan Liuniang.

You are the wife of the Great Chief.

I don't care what you want to do.

But don't ever

involve the Ministry of Justice

in this case.

The Ministry of Justice

will not join you.

Director.

Zhang Baohuan,

who serves close to the Empress Dowager,

is outside the Ministry of Justice

and asking Clerk Yan for a chat.

Oh my!

Don't cause any trouble.

You aim high.

My Ministry of Justice aims low.

Ms. Yan.

Ms. Yan, I know you are busy.

Today, I come to visit you.

Sorry for bothering you.

Not at all.

I'm here today,

actually have nothing important to say.

I just wonder

how Han Shiyuan

has been recently.

Last night, Mr. Han

went back to the Yan Mansion with Caiwei,

and the Imperial Guards did not make things difficult for him.

But I went to the Yan Mansion today

and was told he was not there.

I guess he doesn't want to see me.

I wonder what the story is

between you and Mr. Han.

Nothing special.

We are just old acquaintances.

Since Han Shiyuan

won the favor of Yan Sanniang,

it's good for him then.

In the future,

if you have the chance,

please take good care of him.

Of course.

Then I will not disturb any further.

I take my leave.

Han Shiyuan keeps his stories

with Zhang Baohuan

and Princess Yong'an a secret.

Regarding Chen Huo'e came back to life,

it seems many forces are involved in behind.

Even involving the marriage of Caiwei.

Even Lai Luozhi wants to intervene in this matter.

Now,

everyone seems to want me

to stay out of it.

What should I do?

[Yan Mansion]

Liuniang, you are here.

Caiwei, Mr. Han.

I should thank you and the Great Chief for saving us last night.

Why also sent gifts to me today?

I think Mrs. Shen

is here for interrogating me.

About what happened last night,

Mr. Han and I really don't know anything.

Caiwei, don't worry.

We're going to get to the bottom of what happened last night.

I just want to know

your relationships with Mr. Zhang

and Princess Yong'an.

I can't tell you.

You still don't tell me at this point?

If it wasn't for you, how could Caiwei

have suffered so much?

Stop pressuring him.

I trust him.

- Liuniang, you are back. - Mother.

Don't you have to work today?

You must be worried about those gifts,

wanting to see them for yourself at Caiwei's place, right?

Let me tell you.

This time, your husband

has done it quite properly.

I

am so proud.

Gifts? Just now, Caiwei also mentioned gifts.

What are you talking about?

Don't you know?

This morning, the Shen Mansion sent someone to express condolences,

saying that you're worried about Caiwei

being frightened last night,

so specially sent a lot of tonic gifts.

Those are valuable gifts.

I knew it had to be my son-in-law who paid.

Right, the kitchen has stewed some tonics.

Come on. I'll get you one.

Shen Du did this behind my back?

Why is he suddenly so warm to our family?

No need to ask.

It's because of you, of course.

Otherwise, why would Great Chief

care about us, modest Yan Mansion?

Would that man

still want to win

Caiwei's heart?

Caiwei

is really talented.

Indeed, she seems more

remarkable than you.

No, no way.

I have to kill his hope.

I'll go urge your father tonight

to have him

arrange the marriage between Sanniang and Han Shiyuan.

I have to let them marry

as soon as possible.

Mother.

What are you thinking about?

Has White Ghost

hit you recently?

Have you two been arguing lately?

Let me tell you.

You must not take it lightly.

You must keep an eye on him.

Never let your guard down.

Okay, I got it.

I feel a bit hungry.

Why don't you get me a bowl of soup?

I almost forgot. Just wait.

What a fine zither.

What a beautiful tune.

What delightful charm.

The piece played by Jinzang today

seems different from the past,

with a bit more of a Zen feel.

It makes me feel refreshed.

This is

an ancient and elegant music from Madam Xu.

A few days ago, when I went to the temple to worship Buddha,

an eminent monk bestowed upon me a scroll of sheet music.

It's said to have the effect of clearing the mind and spirit.

So I requested Mr. Jin

to perform it.

Indeed, it was wonderful.

I remember,

back then,

you dug up the lingzhi on the mountain

and gave it to me,

pleading me to deal leniently with

the case of the Shen family

and release the young Shen Du from the detention center.

So today,

what is your request?

I dare not.

Let him in.

Minister Shen.

I know why you are here.

Vice Minister Lai

personally requested the re-investigation of the Chen Huo'e case.

Although this case has recently been investigated by you,

after all, five years ago,

he's the one who handled it.

He confessed his negligence,

wanting to make amends.

I can understand it.

Your Majesty.

In my humble opinion,

the dead cannot be brought back to life.

The Chen Huo'e back then

may not be the current Chen Huo'e.

Minister Shen.

Since you're injured,

there's no need to force yourself.

It's a minor injury.

It's no big deal.

Okay.

Since Madam Xu is vouching for you.

Then the case of Chen Huo'e

shall be handed over to the Imperial Guards.

Yes.

If that's the case,

let Prime Minister Zhang handle

the Hongwen School examination.

After all, he is a civil official.

It's easier for him to communicate

with the scholars.

Minister Shen.

You shall be responsible for the security of the Imperial City, how about that?

Your Majesty.

The security of the Imperial City is a matter of great importance.

No room for any mistakes.

The Imperial Guards has limited manpower.

I'm afraid it's difficult to take care of everything.

You!

Usually, you only complain about not having enough power.

But today,

you're making excuses.

I know

what you're thinking about.

- I dare not. - Dare not?

I see you are daring

to set me up.

- Empress Dowager, please calm down. - Please calm down.

Alright.

Since I entrust you the security of the Imperial City,

naturally, you'll be given the authority to mobilize resources from all departments.

During the Hongwen School examination,

where security is involved,

personnel from all departments

will be at your disposal.

Thank you, Empress Dowager.

Your Highness, Prime Minister Zhang has already taken over the Hongwen School.

That old man!

He has taken the lead again.

Interesting.

Your Highness.

Sir, perfect timing.

Let's see if these Imperial Yellow Peony

are blooming beautifully.

So beautiful.

Prince Xian.

This time, the Empress Dowager

has entrusted me to handle

the Hongwen School examination.

The scholars of the Hongwen School

are the foremost among scholars in the country.

With the merits of this examination,

Prince Xian, you would get a further advantage

on acquiring the position of Prince Regent.

Sir.

Whether it is me

or Princess of Valor who becomes the Prince Regent,

we are all serving the Empress Dowager and His Majesty.

Prince Xian, no way.

His Majesty is slow of speech,

and the Empress Dowager is getting old.

Prince Regent is very important to Dacang.

On this matter,

Prince Xian, you must not take it lightly.

Sir, thank you.

You must correct everyone's misunderstanding

and make the scholars from humble backgrounds

feel valued by you and me.

Yes, that is of course.

But Shen Du has obtained the authority of the security of the Imperial City,

adding more powers and responsibilities.

Minister Shen is certainly capable.

No matter

what kind of situation this guy is in,

what kind of mess he's in,

he always has a way to deal with it.

What do you think?

Prince Xian, you are right.

Well, Shen Du

has obtained the authority of the security of the Imperial City,

I wonder if the situation in Xiang'an

should be the more chaotic, the better?

Prince Xian.

Maybe we should give him a hand.

What did you just say?

Go do your work.

Great Chief.

The Hongwen School examination

was handed over to Prime Minister Zhang ultimately.

Empress Dowager entrusted the Imperial Guards the security of the Imperial City.

Is it to comfort us?

This is what I wanted.

You don't seem to be disappointed.

The wind is going to pick up.

During the Hongwen School examination,

Princess of Valor, Prince Xian,

Prime Minister Zhang and Lai Luozhi

will surely take some actions.

Be alert.

Yes.

The security near the Hongwen School

should not be underestimated.

You can get more guards and inspectors for assistance.

And don't take the security of the Three Departments

and Six Ministries lightly.

My Imperial Guards will personally keep a tight watch.

Especially, Lintai.

Yes.

Who is it?

Great Chief Shen.

Thank you for the gifts you sent to Caiwei and the others.

They all liked them.

It's no big deal.

At today's court,

anything interesting?

Nothing much.

Lai Luozhi requested the investigation to the Chen Huo'e case.

Did the Empress Dowager grant it to him?

She granted it to me.

You?

You mean, the Chen Huo'e case

will be still handled by the Imperial Guards?

That's great!

I'll go grind some ink for you.

No matter how you tidy up a puppy's den,

it's still a puppy's den.

Your hand…

Is it getting better?

Bitten by a puppy,

it won't heal that fast.

Great Chief Shen.

You keep reading the case files

and take a rest.

I'll go cook for you, okay?

Can you cook?

Don't underestimate me.

I am Yan Liuniang, after all.

Yes.

You are widely praised

for your talents in art, literacy, and handicrafts,

with knowledge of the past and present,

your reputation as a virtuous lady

is known throughout the Xiang'an.

Go.

Come on.

Please sit down.

Great Chief, these are dishes I cooked myself.

Have a taste.

Try this chicken.

How is it?

Surprisingly,

it tastes nice.

See, see.

I knew it.

Cooking and autopsies

are pretty much the same.

Using the methods of preserving and dissecting a corpse

to prepare this chicken,

the texture will be just like that of a freshly killed one.

Right.

Try this soup.

The inspiration for this spice

comes from the spices used by Mrs. Tang to marinate corpses.

Smell it. Does it smell good?

Right?

It smells good, right?

What do you want?

Just tell me.

It works so fast.

Well, I wonder

if I could participate in

the Chen Huo'e case.

No.

Can't you see how complicated this case is?

Both the Ministry of Justice and the Dali Supreme Court avoid it,

yet you want to get involved in it.

I know.

Lai Luozhi and Princess Yong'an

have both come to me today.

Through their words,

they just don't want me involved in this case.

But I'm just a lowly clerk.

Could they possibly be wary of me?

What they are wary of

is just the name Mrs. Shen.

Since you know it…

You have already taken on this case.

Now,

I can't escape anyway.

How can I

stay out it?

If you encounter danger,

can I not get involved?

Sorry.

There's nothing to be sorry about.

Finding out the truth and clearing the innocent one's name

are what I desire as well.

All I want is that you grant me the authority to investigate the case.

Rest assured. I will definitely not hold you back,

or be a burden to you either.

But you have to promise me.

Consult with me everything first

before taking actions.

Don't act rashly on your own.

Of course.

You are the Great Chief,

my superior.

Of course, I'm at your disposal.

From now on,

I shall only follow your orders.

Okay?

[Imperial Guards]

Boring.

[Imperial Guards]

[Chen Mansion]

Case handling by the Imperial Guards.

Is Mr. Chen Shoujie here?

I am Yan Xing, a clerk from the Ministry of Justice.

I have some questions to ask him.

That night, Madam was in good mood

and made personally

basin mutton, smoked chicken,

baked flatbread and cake.

She even gave me a bowl of wine.

When I slept until midnight,

I suddenly heard the master's shouting.

Madam!

In the end, Madam…

[Chen Shoujie]

Madam.

Be careful.

[Jinxiu Workshop]

- Master, Master. - There's a fire!

Master, Master.

- There's a fire! - Master.

- Master. - Moth.

- It's on fire! - Master.

- It's on fire! - Master.

Moth!

Is he talking about Chen Huo'e?

[Ministry of Justice]

Don't get close to us.

You'll sit

over there.

Since you handle the case for the Imperial Guards,

then you are no longer related to

the Ministry of Justice.

No matter the great trouble you cause,

it has nothing to do with the Ministry of Justice.

The Ministry of Justice

won't get involved in it.

No.

Yan Liuniang.

Let me tell you,

no matter what,

be sure to protect yourself.

If you die,

I will certainly…

I will certainly perform a grand opera for three days

at the Furong Garden

to ensure you can't rest in peace even in the underworld.

Rest assured.

I will surely not let you succeed.

The third year of the Shengli Era,

Jinxiu Workshop was charged

with the crime of insubordination for delaying presenting Princess Runing

with summer clothes.

Since the summer clothes were ordered by the Prince Consort,

[Princess Runing] so he committed suicide in court to apologize.

Since then, Princess Runing

has been at odds with the current Empress Dowager.

And Jinxiu Workshop was accused of using the inappropriate pattern,

violating a major imperial taboo, so got closed down.

The whole family of the Jinxiu Workshop's owner was executed.

[Jinxiu Workshop] That was the Jinxiu Workshop case.

Go, let go of me.

Inappropriate?

Rumor had it that four years ago,

it was the Prince Consort who wanted to please the Empress,

but unexpectedly, he caused Princess Runing

to wear the same

purple chrysanthemum pattern clothes as the former Empress,

which made the current Empress Dowager mad.

But this case file is only vaguely written as "Inappropriate".

The case file is not that trustable.

Come take a look, baked cake.

Come on.

- Mr. Pan. - Mr. Pan.

I didn't expect you to stay here.

We've been looking for you.

Who are you two?

The day before yesterday at the Hongwen School,

I witnessed your quick wit.

I heard you are also joining the Hongwen School examination.

In the future, we shall be companions.

- Let's go. - I'm flattered.

We must have a drink.

- Let's go. - Come on.

Alright.

- Come on. - This way.

After you, Mr. Pan.

Bravo!

Prince Xian and Prime Minister Zhang cherish talents,

so they specially told us

to communicate with the scholars from humble backgrounds

in this examination.

So that in the future, we can better

serve the court.

Please sit.

Please sit, don't be shy.

His Majesty is benevolent and virtuous.

This Hongwen School examination

does not consider social status,

family background,

or recommendations.

Only judges by virtue and talent.

It can be said to set a precedent for our dynasty,

truly a fortune for scholars.

Indeed.

Prime Minister Zhang told me

to prepare some wine for you.

Everyone,

please communicate with

talents more.

Here.

Please, please.

Come on. I toast to you all.

What does it mean?

Prince Xian

has always valued scholars,

fearing that you

might find it inconvenient

while living in Xiang'an.

So he specially sent this modest gift.

Well, Prince Xian

is kind-hearted and benevolent.

Everyone,

please accept it.

Is this the kind gesture from noble classes?

Mr. Pan.

How dare he to reject Prime Minister Zhang's gifts!

Such a nobody.

Noble classes look down on us.

How dare he to use such despicable means

to bribe and corrupt our hearts!

Poor lad.

Pay more respect.

Are you Prime Minister Zhang's men?

Committing violence when the bribery fails.

Violence? I commit violence?

Violence, right?

In the Xiang'an City,

we are under the emperor's sovereign.

Don't be that stubborn,

so you'll suffer less.

Be smart.

Who are you?

Prime Minister Zhang is soft,

but Prince Xian is wise and brilliant.

To you scholars from humble backgrounds,

threats and bribes are useless.

Might as well kill you all.

We just don't want to

favor Prime Minister Zhang and Prince Xian.

So we have to die for it?

Kill!

Prince Xian will not let you off.

Go!

It's you!

Great Chief Shen.

Be careful.

[Guanyin Hall]

This man's strength is brutish.

His hidden weapons are with fierce power.

Be careful.

Yes.

Chase!

Hurry!

Your Highness.

Someone

pinned this note to the corridor column.
