[Episode 10]

Stop.

Great Chief, Madam has told us

to extinguish all the lanterns when we arrive.

Well…

Extinguish them.

Extinguish them.

Great Chief.

Mind the steps.

Great Chief.

Clerk Yan brought a strange man

to my bedroom

and told us to wait here.

Mr. Han.

Where have you been hiding all this time?

Why are you leaving so soon?

Han Shiyuan?

Shiyuan has run away.

Are you sure this man is Han Shiyuan?

It's him. That's how he ran away that day.

He was wearing exactly the same clothes.

Yes.

Exactly the same.

That day, you were startled by the bright light from Ming Hall,

and it was bright in the east and dark in the west.

He ran west.

That day, you didn't actually

see his face clearly.

It's not him.

But it's clearly him just now.

It was him that day too.

That wasn't him in the room.

And it wasn't him that day either,

but his shadow.

On that day,

Lan Guizhou forged Han Shiyuan was still in the house

through the shadow.

Then he disguised himself as Han Shiyuan

and went west.

Just happened the Ming Hall on the east side catching fire,

creating a huge blaze of light,

which diverted the attention.

So that made the eyewitness scholar mistakenly

thought he was Han Shiyuan.

You're just making assumptions.

On the seventh day of May, Shiyuan was clearly in the house

and went west.

The problem is

that neither you

nor this scholar who witnessed it outside the house

said

that only Han Shiyuan left alone.

You're inside the house, and there's a light in it.

In a situation where it's bright inside and dark outside,

how did you see Han Shiyuan heading west?

Clerk Yan is right.

The light is on in the house.

Indeed, we can't see the outside.

As for why to forge

Han Shiyuan was still in the Hongwen School

on the night of the seventh night of May.

Then we have to ask

his good roommate about it.

Take him away.

Everyone, dismissed.

Pan, thank you so much for today.

It's no big deal, not worth mentioning.

Who exactly is this Pan?

Madam is all smiles with him.

They seem to be old acquaintances.

Clerk Yan.

I have things to do to today.

So I have to go now.

You're leaving?

I haven't even had the chance

to properly thank you.

Fate will bring us together.

If you need my help,

come find me at the Ghost Market anytime.

Deal.

- Really? - Yes.

Madam has never been so cheerful in the mansion.

Today, thanks to Pan,

so the case can be solved smoothly.

Aren't you taking me to the Imperial Guards?

What about the interrogation?

Figure it out yourself.

What's wrong with him?

Great Chief, I found

that Pan is named Pan Chi,

who has solved several doubtful cases in Jiangnan.

Great Chief.

Shall we start the interrogation now?

Interrogate me if you want to ask.

Shut up.

Madam.

How's the interrogation going?

Madam, you're finally here. We've been waiting for you.

You should have been here long ago.

Let's start the interrogation.

You thought that Han Shiyuan

would not appear again after eloping,

so you forged his presence

and framed him for murder.

Yes.

Indeed.

Shiyuan told me

he eloped with his lover on the night of the sixth day.

I didn't want to frame Shiyuan.

I knew he's going to leave,

so I just wanted to borrow his name.

But I don't think that's your motive for murder.

You kept mentioning Han Shiyuan,

yet don't mention a single word about the scholar you killed.

You still haven't told me

why you killed him.

He…

What is there to mention him?

He has ruined my poetry collection.

Didn't he deserve to die?

He's ruined your poetry collection,

so you killed him?

That poetry collection matters much to me.

Shiyuan

was my only friend.

[Han Shiyuan]

Ever since Shiyuan

dated Yan Sanniang,

I've stayed up for many nights

to copy that poetry collection.

it was a gift I gave to Shiyuan.

My poetry collection!

It's just a copied poetry collection.

Do you think you are Pan Yanzhi?

Do you think anyone

would love this poetry collection?

Just some waste paper.

My poetry collection!

How dare he destroyed it

and mocked me!

You killed him

and intentionally framed Han Shiyuan.

Actually,

you were hoping for him

to return upon hearing the news.

After Han Shiyuan returned to Xiang'an,

he has disappeared.

Have you seen him?

Where have you hidden Han Shiyuan?

An abandoned liquor store

in the West Market.

I didn't expect this Lan Guizhou

would kill animals

in here.

He's so twisted inside.

No wonder he would kill someone

because of a poetry collection.

Han Shiyuan

got taken away first again.

It's the signal from the Imperial Guards, in the direction of the Furong Garden.

Shen Du.

Can't you just let me

sit properly on the horse?

[Furong Garden]

Your hand.

Jing Lin.

My legs are feeling a bit num.

Help me up.

You are stubborn.

Don't try to be brave.

Jing Lin.

Go save them.

My…

My sister is up there.

Tell the Imperial Guards to put out the fire and save them.

It's weird.

Don't act rashly.

You can disregard human lives,

but I can't.

If you don't save them, I will.

Don't go over there.

Be careful.

It's cold flame.

It's coming.

[Chen Huo'e] Like a moth to a flame.

Live at dawn, die at dusk.

Not entering samsara,

undying.

Fools in the world.

I, Chen Huo'e,

am back.

Chen Huo'e.

The serial killer from five years ago.

Didn't she

commit suicide in public five years ago?

The dead cannot be brought back to life.

I'm sure this is just

some deceitful trick.

I didn't expect you can remain so calm and composed

facing my nirvana setup.

White Ghost, you are really amazing.

What a pity.

Even if you are the soul-reaper,

cannot stop me

from rebirth in the nirvana.

Then I shall capture you

and get you back to hell.

Caiwei.

Caiwei.

Mr. Han.

Caiwei.

Liuniang,

Great Chief.

Manager Yang, you are here.

Then it seems tonight,

it's Princess Yong'an who's intervening.

But the Imperial Personal Guards who work

for the Empress Dowager are here too.

It makes me somewhat confused.

Well, Princess of Valor

only asked me to save Mr. Han.

I don't know anything else.

Great Chief, Manager Yang.

I was in a hurry to save people.

I hope I didn't bother you.

I wonder who can mobilize the Imperial Personal Guards,

so turns out to be a favorite by the Empress Dowager.

Mr. Zhang.

Shiyuan.

You…

What happened?

Are you injured? Are you alright?

Alright, as long as you're not injured.

Remember.

Be careful in the future.

Do not let yourself fall into such a situation.

Great Chief Shen.

Weird things happened today.

I'm glad you are here.

Please let people of Imperial Guards

take greater care of this matter

and catch the person behind the scenes,

to prevent future troubles.

I am indeed in charge of this.

If it were not for you two,

the murderer would have already been caught.

I apologize for any offense.

I hope you could forgive me.

The reappearance of Chen Huo'e is riddled with oddities.

Great Chief.

Please catch the murderer.

I must return to the palace.

I take my leave.

Han Shiyuan.

Her Highness asked me to pass on a message to you.

As long as you want it,

Her Highness's mind has not changed.

Han Shiyuan.

Do you have anything to say?

I know nothing.

About the homicide case of the Hongwen School,

Liuniang has already cleared your name.

Tonight,

you and Yan Caiwei are the victims.

If you have nothing to say,

then take her

back to the Yan Mansion to rest.

[Furong Garden]

Your third brother-in-law

has a deep connection with Princess Yong'an

and Zhang Baohuan.

It's really surprising.

Indeed.

Han Shiyuan obviously knows

Zhang Baohuan long ago

and also has quite a story with Princess Yong'an.

They saved him,

yet he is not the slightest bit grateful

and wanted to pretend not to know them.

There must be a reason for this.

But Caiwei

seems to know nothing.

I know.

From beginning to end,

I have never thought to embarrass your third sister.

I'm sorry I did rashly just now.

I'm going to the Ministry of Justice to check the case files later.

Would you like to go with me?

Yes, yes.

Come on, bros.

Place two here.

Then place another two here.

At the entrance, place two by the door.

Make sure the lanterns are all aligned

to light the room up.

Retreat.

You're exaggerating it.

So many lanterns.

The candles cost money.

[Chen Huo'e Serial Homicides]

Found it.

Five years ago,

the villainous woman Chen Huo'e committed crimes in many places,

[Chen Huo'e Serial Homicides] and consecutively killed more than fifty women.

And on the back of the dead women

was found

a giant moth brand

burned by fire.

For a moment, the whole country was in a panic.

Woman shut themselves

in the houses.

Finally, the villainous woman Chen Huo'e

was captured by the Imperial Inspectorate.

She was an ugly-faced woman,

even claiming

that she knew how to come back to life

and would be back someday.

At the scene of capture,

Chen Huo'e stabbed a sword into her heart to kill herself.

Before she died,

she said…

Like a moth to a flame.

Live at dawn, die at dusk.

Not entering samsara,

undying.

Like a moth to a flame.

Live at dawn, die at dusk.

Not entering samsara,

undying.

Mrs. Tang.

From the motive and modus operandi,

these two cases

have nothing in common.

But merely from the cases themselves,

these two cases

could not have been done by one person alone.

It was a gang committing the crimes.

Whether it's Mrs. Tang burying bodies after killing

or Chen Huo'e's serial homicides five years ago,

or,

tonight's

nirvana setup,

none of these could be done by one person alone.

This is not a simple gang crime.

Just consider what happened tonight,

the things behind it are intricate and complex.

I'm afraid this Chen Huo'e

is just a scapegoat.

Then is tonight's Chen Huo'e

the same person who was captured

five years ago?

No matter what,

the Chen Huo'e of five years ago

has disappeared after committing the crimes.

That indicates the person behind this

no longer needed her.

Five years later, Chen Huo'e appeared again.

That indicates the person behind this

needs her again.

Indeed.

What exactly does he want?

It's so complicated.

A small mistake

could lead to a disaster.

Mother.

The night-blooming jasmine in the backyard has bloomed,

so I picked a bunch for you.

Now you are there alone.

[Wang Ruohan]

Do you feel lonely?

How about I sing a song for you?

Do you remember when I was young,

you would a nursery rhyme

for me?

♪ Mind your words ♪

♪ Grandma displeased ♪

♪ Mother keeps picking flowers ♪

♪ Grandfather is often joyful upon hearing the melody ♪

♪ Mother keeps picking flowers ♪

Who?

It's the first time

to hear someone singing a nursery rhyme in the graveyard.

On a dark and windy night,

it's quite interesting.

It's you.

Mr. Mask, I've seen you.

When I come to visit my mother before,

I often see you around here.

Do you also have relatives and friends buried nearby?

Yes.

My mother

is buried nearby.

I don't know

what other family burials are around here.

The treasure land near Xiang'an City

is naturally bought by noble families

and wealthy households

to be used as their ancestral tombs.

Lowly ones

can only curl up in the corners of the graveyard,

seeking a place to dwell in.

This grave

cost my father

a lot of money.

It is indeed large and imposing.

But I know

my mother did not want

to be alone here.

And she surely hoped to make more friends.

So I think

my mother and your mother

must have already become good neighbors and friends.

Good friends?

You…

are quite different.

Why do you wear a mask?

Is it because you're injured on the face?

Ever since I was born,

I've had an ugly birthmark on my face,

with a horrifying shape.

People who have seen my face

would be too scared to sleep.

Do you want to see it?

Wait a moment.

I need to prepare myself.

Wait for me to count to five, alright?

Five.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

Mr. Mask?

Leaving already?

Your hand hasn't applied medicine yet.

I had Mr. Shen

bring over all kinds of wound medicine

from the mansion

to see which one is best for treating

a bite.

Why is it so serious?

It's a puppy bite.

No bother.

Mr. Shen said there is a kind of red medicine,

which was used for treating Yaya before.

The bite from Yaya

is about the same as the bite

from me.

Yes.

Previously, Yaya was bitten by a mad dog.

Indeed, it's about the same.

This is your way of apologizing?

What am I apologizing for?

You didn't say it clearly and caused me to misunderstand.

Besides,

Didn't you even know

to let Jing Lin bandage the wound for you?

Do you have to wait for me to do it?

I…

- Let go of me! - Go.

Let go of me!

- Let go of me! - Go.

Let go of me!

Du.

Although it's to save someone,

you have to be careful too.

If that arrow just now

had been an inch off target,

this person would surely be dead.

Father, I won't miss the target.

I need to leave him alive

for interrogation.

I am Shen Du, are you okay?

Are you

the same boy

who saved me back then?

Who?

Yan Xing.

Why would this happen?

You did this on purpose, right?

Of course not.

Sorry, I grabbed the wrong one.

[Jincang Ointment, Chunfeng Powder]

You!

I'll wash it off for you right away.
