Collier is here to work with you
on the makeup aspect of your

head-to-toe look for this
challenge.

Hi, everyone. Morning.
For this challenge, you will

be designing a high fashion look
that will appear in a

L'Oreal Paris advertorial.
When I say high fashion, I'm

referring to something that
would be perfectly at home in

Paris couture week.
In other words, a serious, wow

moment.
To get the l'oreal advert,

this is huge.
Millions and millions of women

will be seeing this ad.
My dress to be featured in it...

I like this challenge.
You can really do something over

the top. That's who I am.
This advertorial will appear

in Marie Claire magazine and the
winner of this challenge will

receive something unprecedented.

$20,000.
What?

From L'Oreal Paris.
$20,000. I haven't made over

$12,000 a year.
And to win $20,000, wow, that's

amazing.
Ivy, you look stricken.

I almost started crying.
Right now, I'm struggling just

to live.
So the $20,000 win would be

amazing.
Exciting, yes?

Yeah. Wow.
This advertorial not only

features your design, but it
also features l'oreal's studio

secret eye shadow duos.
They come in five fantastic

Metallic, crystal,

bright, matte, and velvet.
So the point of departure

for this challenge is to use one
of the studio secrets finishes

for your inspiration.
So the challenge today is

to create a high fashion,
couture look that incorporates

one of those eye shadow
combinations.

And considering that there's a
$20,000 incentive, risking big

could come with big payoff.
I will say this about velvet,

unless you're really adept at
using it, it's very difficult.

And, Mondo, you won the last
challenge so you get to choose

first.
I am going to pick bright.

I'm gonna choose the next
designer from our velvet bag.

And that designer is
Christopher.

I'm going with crystal.
I chose crystal because I think

a woman that's wearing my
clothes is probably wearing

diamonds.

Love me some metallic. Ivy.

I don't want the judges to think
that I'm only capable of using

muted colors.
And I really don't think that

a muted color would read well
as an advertorial.

I'm gonna take a serious risk

and go velvet.

Velvet to me is risky, which is
right up my alley.

I think it's a boring fabric
and Gretchen designs boring

clothes.
So it'll work perfect.

that'll really highlight and

I feel like what the judges--

Looking at the l'oreal

makeup, I am going to go very

literal and do something bright.
I'm basing my design on a

kaleidoscope.
When I think of the word

bright, Hawaii comes to mind.

And I am designing this very

beautiful electric blue gown.

I'm going to create waves on it.

I'm thinking big kimono
sleeves.

I want to do a wrap that has
kind of a plunging neckline.

I don't want to stray too far
from, like, the elements that

the judges know me for.

I think that I'm a very good

showcase what I'm capable of

I'm not really paying
attention to any of the other

designers because I am so
focused on trying to get my

stuff done.
But I know who has issues.

strongest pieces.

I like the idea of keeping

Cassie pale because I don't want
her to look like a regular human

being.
I kind of want her to look like

a hybrid.
I'm using this infallible.

It's gonna be very structural.

And what I'm gonna do is I'm

gonna cut them off the chain and
hand-sew them.

Valerie's does not look
avant-garde.

I can't see that on a Paris
Runway.

This is incredibly ambitious.
This could be one of my

strongest pieces.
I'm really hoping this will

redeem me from the last
challenge.

Runway, I feel that I definitely
accomplish the challenge in a

way that is new, and innovative,
and still true to who I am.

And I think it looks beautiful.
And it's definitely high

fashion.

When the ready-to-wear look
follows it, I'm so proud of

myself.
I couldn't ask for anything

better.
And I feel like it's really

reminiscent of who I am as a
designer.

Her makeup's really pretty.
Mm-hmm.

I think I got a lot of work done
in such a short amount of time

that I'm pretty amazed that
it looks so good.

I am definitely proud of this look
just because I accomplished

everything that I wanted too.

So the ready-to-wear look
is coming down the Runway

and my model hasn't looked better.
I feel like I really, uh, nailed it.

I'm happy that it's
kind of the look that I was going for.

But I mean, it's definitely still true to me.
And I'm still happy with it

I still think it looks very beautiful.

And then here comes my
ready-to-wear look.

I think it looks so cool.
It's the mini-me version

of my, you know, couture look.

I feel really great seeing my pieces
on the Runway.

Rose is happy. I'm proud of her.
This week for

how she's pulling off this dress.
She looks very smooth.

Ify is confodent and strong

so... It looks great
and I like the styling

I like, I like the concept.
I'm very happy with it.

Yeah. Nice.

What I'm noticing, really,
is the styling.

I just feel like it's a little
not me.

I'm not in love with the hair.
But the dress is so pretty.

It is probably the best work
I've ever done.

Watching kaven come down the
Runway, I think it looks good.

I feel like I've done the best
job I can.

Ooh, I love the side slit
action.

I look at her gown on the
Runway.

It kind of reminds me a little
bit of an angel with the

missing wing or rainbow brite

on crack.
You know, I'm glad it's finished.

It's a finished look.

appreciate the fact that I
pushed on.

And when all hope was lost, I
could've stopped and I didn't.

I'm proud of myself that I stuck
to my guns and I finished it.

Beautiful or not.
It's a dress and it fits her.

my voice and my aesthetic,

but also because I'm the only
one that did separates.

In the end, my look was perfect.

So how are you feeling right

now? I didn't think that I was
gonna be in the bottom.

I think I just felt like I took
on too much.

But I thought the concept was
really beautiful.

I'm kind of surprised that
Gretchen got in the top.

I mean, I knew that Andy and
Mondo would be up there, but,

like...
I didn't know if Andy would.

I thought Andy would.
It was just so unique.

I think with Gretchen's, the
reason I don't think she's gonna

win is because I think they're
like her ready-to-wear more than

her high fashion look.
It's a huge prize.

It's 20 grand, man.
Yeah, it is.

It's amazing. Yeah.
That's crazy.

Gretchen, tell us about your
look.

I chose velvet as my finish.
And it was really important for

me to be a fantasy version of

who I think I am as a designer
and the type of woman that I

want to create for.
And then as I translated that

into my ready-to-wear, I really

feel like it's really taking
everything you love about this

and creating something that's
very accessible.

I think that your high
fashion dress--I actually think

is very wearable.
Did you do the feather work

yourself?
I did.

That's all hand applique.
I love the back.

I wish there was more of this
beading in the front somehow.

I almost want to turn it around
and have the front be the back

and the back be the front
because that to me brings it to

another level.
It's always a rule of thumb

that I believe in, is that when
you're wearing something like

this, you sit across a dinning
table, you meet people, it's

always this front part is very
important.

So I would've liked a little
more emphasis in the front.

But it's beautiful overall.

I don't love her hair because
I think that the look is so

not costume-y.
And I think the hair makes it

feel a little costume-y.
But I think her makeup is

extraordinary.
It's perfect, actually.

I like both looks.

Andy, tell us about your
looks.

The finish that I picked,
um, was a metallic finish.

I wanted to create a silhouette
that was very strong.

Still keeping my woman feminine.

For the ready-to-wear look,
I wanted to maintain that

strength so I maintained
the--the same armor on the arm

and on the side.
And this is actually the same

fabric as this.
But I did a sheer overlay to

make it more wearable.
I like it.

You've kept to your vision.
And as a designer, you have to

stick to your vision.
I like that you've got so much

technique going on in there.
I like all the detailing.

And I love that cocktail dress.
It's real. It's wearable.

Good job.
I like the idea of it.

It's not so obvious, the
metallic.

I think that the translation
works brilliantly.

And my favorite thing, I think
that those boot pants--that

those could translate into
something actually quite

wearable.
I love the boots.

How did you make this?
The shoe had to go into the

pant and then she slipped it on
as if it was one piece.

It's a pair of pumps inside.
It looks great.

The affect is fantastic.
You did a wise choice in

choosing this blend of
metallics.

Gives it a little depth.
I also like that you went into

the fantasy makeup.
The ready-to-wear, it looks

great.
It feels like it belongs in the

same collection.

I think that you've done a great

I think that that's quite

looks.

I chose bright.
And so I kind of went back to my

childhood and thought about a
kaleidoscope.

You turn it.
You know, you get all those

beautiful shapes and it always
changes.

So I just wanted to give it
interest from the front to the

back.
With the day look, I just wanted

to go completely opposite and

have kind of an absence of
color.

But still be relatable to this
look, but very clean and just

very easy to wear.
First what I want to know,

you made this hat?
I made this this morning.

That is a great hat.
Thank you.

I love the hat.
I love the frizzy hair.

Love the makeup.
You were very bold to use all

those stripes.
They're tricky when you work

with stripes.
There's only one thing to me.

The gown is too short.
And I also think that the

fabric choice looks inexpensive.

I think the back is really
kind of dreamy.

I think it looks a little like

a Kentucky derby horse ribbon
exploded.

I think it's really a very,

very, very glamorous, exciting,

and original design.

What do you think about the

people that are in the bottom?
Do you think all three of

them deserve to be in the bottom?
Yeah. I do.

Ivy, tell us about your two
looks.

I chose bright.
When I think about the word

bright, I thought of the beaches
in Hawaii.

So for the couture look, I did
biased strips.

I kind of wanted to really play
with the idea of the ocean and

the waves.
So I styled her hair also to

look like a wave.
And for the ready-to-wear piece,

I did just a simple cocktail
dress that kind of replicated

the, um, the ocean spray on the

couture dress.
I think they look like

bridesmaids under the Sea.
Everyone up here has a

bridesmaid pageant problem.
I think the necklines on both of

the dresses are really...

Nurse-y on top is the only word
for it.

You know, I think that the
colors could've been gorgeous,

but they needed to be
alleviated, you know, with a

little bit of lightness.
So they just don't make it for

me.
I think you had problems

with the fit on both dresses.
Yeah.

Your model is a very young
girl and she looks ancient.

You tried very hard.
Thank you.

But it's overkill. Okay.
In every way from the colors

to your technique to your, you
know, the way you laid out

your bias strips.
Not a good dress.

Will you show us the back?

I thought the back is better
than the front.

This is a little bit messy.
One strap is thicker than the

other, then all those stripes.
If that would've been resolved

a little bit better...
But this is just a little bit

all over the place.
But I didn't hate it as much as

as the others.
Hmm.

Valerie, tell us about your
looks.

The element that I received
was crystal.

My initial inspiration was
Audrey hepburn.

Audrey in both
breakfast at Tiffany's,

but also in my fair Lady.
For the high fashion look,

i wanted to do something that
was classic, but still regal,

and elegant, and light, and
buoyant.

And then for my ready-to-wear
look, I wanted to go kind of the

opposite.
I wanted to have a contrast.

So something that's a little
more versatile, a little more

accessible.
The number one thing you

learn in fashion is you should

let the fabric talk to you.

You were not imaginative enough.

You forced the fabric.
And that's when everything

starts going crazy.
You're trying to do a

structured dress out of soft

fabric. Right.
It's like trying to make a

winter coat out of kleenex.

Wow. I think this looks like

a beauty pageant dress.
I mean, she looks like

miss Guatemala.
There's where my family's

from, actually.
No offense to you.

No. It's okay. It's okay.
But the hair and the makeup

are not helping your cause.

I mean, I really question your

taste with this.
It's just--there's nothing

modern about it.
I think that this metallic,

weird diamante hoop at her
shoulder is just wacky.

I mean, the only possible
accessory that she could use

with this is a wand.

I mean, it literally looks like

"I love you and you and you."

I mean, it's just--it's wacky.

And then you went the other way
around.

She just came from the office
and someone said "oh, by the

way, it's a crystal challenge. "

And she went into her handbag
and she sewed three crystal

buttons on it.
I mean, it's not even--it's not

even in the ballpark.
No, I-I agree.

Your points are very valid.
Michael, tell us about your

looks.
The category that I had to

choose from was metallic.
I love the color.

And I did the shape of the dress
first.

Was kind of digging, like, the
shapes that was going into it.

And then for the ready-to-wear,
i just wanted to do something,

you know, just simple and easy

and not too over-the-top.

Maybe like the mini-me version

of the evening gown, so to
speak.

I'm not good at this.
I've been in the bottom before.

I'm kind of nervous up here.

In this instance, the fabric
spoke to you and you did work

well with the fabric, I think.

Proportions in this dress need a
lot of work.

I'm not a big fan of that
bordeaux color.

But I like the cocktail dress.
Could be a little longer.

I think you have to choose
either boobs or legs.

Because now it's, like, I don't
know where to look.

The amazing legs or the amazing
boobs.

And, therefore, I would've made
the skirt longer.

You're the only one standing
up here who the clothes are

constructed well, sewn well, and
tailored well.

I think you had a big problem
with this gown--a ball gown.

You know, it's not the most
modern thing.

So to wire the hem like that and

give us this ridiculous train,

and then to style her like
like Scarlett o'hara in

gone with the wind, you know,
it's not a costume challenge.

hello! I mean, she's got all the

curtains from tara ripped off
the wall and put into the one

dress.

You guys loved Andy.

I love the fact that he did
pants.

Me too.
You know, for me, Andy grew

on me.
When the first thing came out,

I was not so sure.
I felt it was over-the-top.

There was too much going on.
But I just feel that once you

look at it and the details--
and the man has really put so

much effort into it, there's
something going on there which

is good.
And I think that his day

dress is really chic, sleek,

sexy.
I like the day dress.

Great.
You would wear that.

I would wear that dress.
Oh, yeah, I like the day

dress.
It's a beautiful, black, simple

dress.
But I like that he had the

metallic under the sheer fabric.
Yeah, which was smart.

I think it was smart.
Yeah. That was.

I like the choice of fabric.
And I like the way he kind of

mixes it together.
I-I definitely do.

Let's talk about Mondo.
It's refreshing that he--

he embraces color.

And with all this mishmash,
it could go really, really

wrong.
But he always makes it work.

Part of that, honestly,
the guy knows how to construct

clothes.
So he can take something that

could look quite honestly like
a train wreck and turn it into

something that actually, I
think, is quite beautiful.

His high fashion look was
so over-the-top, but it was

still working.
And then you look at his

ready-to-wear look, which was
really commercial.

Yeah.
It's very commercial because

if you put it on, you'd look
skinnier.

Oh, yes, very slimming.
Such an important point.

And that's a big thing.
Very slimming.

A very, very smart,
commercial, but still chic

dress.
Yeah.

Okay, let's talk about Gretchen.
I like her bohemian flavor.

It was Gretchen just elevated.

I thought the back detailing was
gorgeous.

I love the degrade with the
feathers.

And I loved all the layers of
the fabric.

It looked effortless.
And I really--I do think that

for a beauty shoot for the
advertorial, the fact that this

velvet has so much richness
would be perfect.

Would be great.
The ready-to-wear dress is

nice.
But she could've done a little

bit more here.
I like the silhouette,

though. I do too.
I think that the dress--

it's interesting that when you
first look at it, you think it's

kind of demure and conservative.

But, in fact, when she walks,
and you get those panels moving

on the side, I like the surprise
of that.

Yeah, I mean, it was quite
sexy.

It's a sexy dress.
It doesn't look sexy

standing.
But when she's walking, I mean,

the slits, they went right up to
here.

They were Heidi high.
I was, like, "mm, I'm liking

that one. "

Let's talk about the designers
that we didn't like.

When you look at the three
lined up, it's a shocker.

No, it was my fair Lady...
>> Gone with the wind.

And the little mermaid.
I mean, it's just so

old-fashioned.
I don't get it.

Yeah. When I look at what happened
with Michael, he just kept going

and going and going.
I mean, it looked like she was

dragging a bolt of fabric behind
her.

Yeah, I didn't love that
train either.

But I thought that there were
a few things in that dress that

were actually not so bad.
One could salvage these

dresses.
I mean, if one had to, he could

retune it and he could really
make them easily better.

Yeah. Yeah.

Oof. What about Valerie?
The wedding dress, you cannot

salvage.
Oh, no.

There's nothing right about
this dress.

No. It's awful.
The styling on top of it is

horrific.
Oh, my God.

The fabric truly, like, got
away from her.

There's a lot wrong here.
I mean, the fabric is--

this dress is the black dress.
It's, like, nothing.

idea there.

If you look at this gown, it
is doing everything bad that a

dress could do to a woman's

And all those asymmetrical lines

on the top of the bustier, I
mean, it just makes the woman

totally wrong.

I mean, it's like they used
primary colors like this.

It's, like, really a disaster.
And then the same bad

neckline twice. Yeah.

worries me about Ivy, I think
she pretty consistently bites

off more than she can chew.
