terrified.

Then you shouldn't roll your

I think I'm a very strong

And there's been times where

people have told me that I'm not

good enough, I'll never make it,

and if I listened to those

idiots, I wouldn't be here

I think Ivy really needs to

prove why she's here.

I think she needs to step it

up and play with some color,

something other than cream,

opaque--opaque is not a color,

but if it was, it would be

called Ivy.

feel like it really could be

You never know on this show

what's gonna happen.

All I know is I don't want to

be forced into making a corset.

Good morning, designers.

I am honored to be standing in

front of photographs of

Jacqueline Kennedy, one of the

world's leading fashion icons.

Ever since she became first Lady

in 1961, she has personified

quality, taste, style,

sophistication, and elegance.

She is how the world perceives

classic American sportswear.

For this challenge, you will

design a look that personifies

your own point of view as a

designer and your own

contribution to American

sportswear.

Remember your point of view as

a designer.

We have to do a garment

inspired by American sportswear

and use Jackie Kennedy as our

muse.

You will have 30 minutes to

sketch and use

Jacqueline Kennedy as your

inspiration.

Then we're going shopping at

mood where you'll have a budget

of $150.

And you have until midnight

tonight.

And your sketching time begins

now.

Classic American sportswear

is definitely what I do as a

designer.

This challenge, I think, is a

good one for me.

I'm gonna do a dress.

And I'm making it a little bit

more fantastic, just because

it's Jackie Kennedy, and it's a

Runway show.

Using Jacqueline Kennedy as

an inspiration, at first I

thought was kind of a hindrance

because I relate her so much to

American fashion.

And my aesthetic plays a lot

with asian ideas of aesthetic,

and so I thought that it wasn't

gonna really mix well, but

Jacqueline Kennedy was a fashion

risk-taker without even knowing

it, and so it's gonna be a

statement piece.

I really want to do separates

this time around just because I

feel like I started off the

competition with more dresses

than I wanted to.

So, designers, your sketching

time is up, and we're heading

off to mood.

Let's go.

All right, designers, think

quality, taste, style,

sophistication, elegance,

expensive.

Your time starts now.

Once I get to mood, I let the

fabric speak to me.

I just kind of run up and down

the aisles like a crazy man.

Yeah, those bolts of fabric have

voices, and they say, "come over

and pick me up," and I usually

do.

It needs to be something you

feel passionate about.

I'm lost right now.

I don't really have a clear

vision of what I want to create.

Fortunately, I do have a color

palette in mind.

I'm thinking either white and

black or white and Navy.

I want to definitely create a

garment that's chic and

timeless.

like, what if I screwed up?

But we can't think about that.

I think I did a fabulous job.

this positive energy, and I'm

dress pattern on the form, but

after working on it for a while,

i'm really not feeling it.

I'm a little concerned about

mondo's look.

It's very mondo, but I feel

like, because of the materials

he used, he might be not hitting

the nail on the head with this

one.

I can't go back to mood, so

i have to make this work, so I

think I'm going to switch and do

a skirt and a top.

This could either be really

good or really bad.

I decided to do sportswear a

little dressier because I

don't like sportswear.

I'm using sportswear fabric.

That counts, right?

What if it, like, it looks too

expensive?

For this challenge, I decided

to channel the earliest

americans--the puritans.

I'm making a skirt out of wool

crepe, but it's sort of

reminiscent of a '50s circle

skirt, but it's got cartridge

pleating, which is kind of like

the crucible.

So I'm not really sure what's

going on, but I really kind of

don't care at this point, 'cause

i think I'm losing my mind.

Aah.

My plan is to get this thing

drafted as fast as possible,

get this thing cut so I can

start working on the details,

because there are a lot of

details on the top.

Hopefully, that's Jackie--

Jackie o enough.

I don't know.

I think that it's about what

she would wear now, not...

Her aesthetic then.

I'm like the Susan lucci of

the show.

I've been in the top, like, four

times, and I've not won a

challenge yet.

And I really, really hope that

A top and a pencil skirt.

I don't think that some of

the other contestants really

know what sportswear is.

To me, Michael C's look looks

very cocktail, and I would have

to say the same thing for

Christopher's.

I don't know if I should do

the piping, though.

I'm putting pleats on the

sleeves, like three pleats on

the sleeves, and then I'm

putting a pleated placket.

and pockets and pleats and

leather.

Although I have to say your

piping, I thought, took it up

a notch on your Marie Claire.

I want to play with some of

the lines from the skirt in the

outerwear piece to go with your

I really like the way it

looks.

I like the way it moves.

She fills it out perfectly.

I think that I understood this

challenge.

They said clean, elegant,

sophisticated, simple, but

fashion-forward.

And I think the dress is that.

I love pencil skirts, and

I think that she looks really

sexy.

It's me. It's edgy.

I'm really happy with this look,

and I think that it definitely

fulfilled the challenge and

also fulfilled my aesthetic.

And I'm really confident in it.

I'm just so excited.

She looks so beautiful.

And she's really embodying

Jacqueline Kennedy.

The entire overall look looks

stupendous, and it looks very,

very expensive.

I think it's very original.

It's very different.

It's things that I've never seen

before.

And I definitely am very proud

of what I've created.

I'm a little nervous.

I'm curious to know what the

judges are gonna think of me

sending down a cocktail dress.

But my model looks great.

Maybe her walking in this dress

shall spark something in the

judges' eye to make me safe or

put me in the top.

It's really hard being on

this side of the Runway.

I nitpick everything.

But I feel like it looks like

something Jacqueline would maybe

wear, and, more than anything,

that's what feels good.

You know, I've come a long

way in this competition, and I

really like my garment.

There's something very beautiful

about that monochromatic outfit,

but, as my model walks down the

Runway, I think to myself, the

skirt's too short.

Why is the skirt so short?

Oh, stop.

When I see my look coming

down the Runway, I feel great.

I think I pulled off a very

clean look, and it's very

versatile.

I think all the pieces could

stand well on their own, but

also changed amongst other

garments in your wardrobe.

It was good to be done and

relaxed, but it's nerve-racking

'cause you just never know which

way the bottle's gonna spin.

Once it hits the Runway, I

have no power.

I'm kind of sweating when I'm

watching because of the fact

that the fit is really off on

the crotch area.

But the overall look, I really,

really love.

Eyen definitely exudes the

spirit, the Grace, and the

elegance that Jacqueline Kennedy

was all about.

She looks sophisticated and

strong and smart, and that's

exactly what I wanted to send

down, so I'm 150% happy with

this look.

And I think I'm gonna win this

one.

the top three because, you know,

Jackie Kennedy's a fashion icon,

and she sets trends.

And I could so imagine her in

your outfit, you know.

Like, it's so fashion-forward.

When I said it was an honor to

be there with Gretchen, it's

all bull.

I don't think Jackie Kennedy

would ever wear any of those

pieces that she sent down the

Runway.

The remaining designers have

the highest and the lowest

I think mondo and Ivy are

To me, Valerie's read

street wear, not sportswear.

Maybe she missed the mark on

this challenge.

Andy's pants are amazing.

Tell us about your look.

For Jacqueline Kennedy in

2010, I really wanted to keep

her modern, but still keep her

classic and keep her streamlined

at the same time.

But I want to give her a little

bit of an edge.

Immediately thought of a fall

look.

That's why you put a jacket

over a jacket?

Well, it's more of a vest.

'Cause she's wearing a

jacket under the jacket, isn't

she?

I mean, it could be used as

a jacket, but it's like a

blouse that can be a jacket.

Can we have a look?

Sure.

Is that not a jacket?

It's a double-knit.

And I made it intentionally to

be something that could be worn

as a blouse, but...

It looks like a jacket.

She can wear a camisole

underneath, and, if she wants,

she can take it off.

Can we put it back on?

Sure.

It has no impact at all.

It's just sad looking.

I mean, she's wearing a lycra

tube skirt with no design in it.

The jacket looks very sadly

tailored.

The collar is an odd shape.

Well, I wanted to keep it

really simple and basic, and I

tried to put, you know...

But, guys, simple doesn't

mean boring.

Right, but that's why I put,

you know, the pleating in the

sleeves and pockets.

I thought it gave it a little

bit of a difference.

You're talking about a style

icon, and that does not look

like a style icon to me.

I guess my interpretation of

American sportswear for

Jackie Kennedy was something a

little more casual.

And the collars just--they

drag it even down further.

And the ankle boot confuses

me with that length of skirt.

Any time that you want to

make a design reference, it's

pleating and zippers.

That does not a good design

make.

Some of the best things are very

simple and have no design

gimmicks to them.

Christopher.

When I was thinking of

Jacqueline Kennedy, I was

definitely inspired by the

effortless, the elegant theme,

so I wanted to do a dress, a

fitted dress, with kind of an

asymmetrical neckline, and

then, when we got the

opportunity for the second

challenge, I found these hides,

these furs, and so I cut the fur

and then I incorporated these

pieces together to kind of

create a stripe.

Well, this was my favorite.

The dress is beautiful.

I love the silhouette of it.

It's chic.

I loved all the draping.

I think the dress is elegant

and sexy at the same time.

I like the subtle sheen.

The wrap on the other hand, I

like the texture, and I like the

color.

I have to say that that dress in

itself is a tricky one to try

to figure out what on earth you

would wear over it.

Yes.

The idea of this piece is, like,

she can wear this to, like, a

fancy luncheon.

I doubt it's lunch.

I kind of agree.

It is more of an evening.

I think it's the silhouette

is what's difficult.

I think you've got this

beautiful neckline, and,

unfortunately, you know, you

obstruct it, you're not helping

it.

When you take the shrug off,

it looks much better.

I agree.

Can you put it back on,

Oh, yeah.

What you've made, I mean, it

looks like a dirty, old rug,

because it's unreadable.

If you can't see it like that,

it's not good.

Michael Drummond, tell us about

your look.

I was thinking about things

about Jackie Kennedy, and I was

thinking about a vintage

silhouette.

I wanted to do a deconstructed

jacket.

I did some cartridge pleating.

I just wanted to sort of make

something modern, but something

that could also transcend to the

past.

This is schizophrenic

Jackie Kennedy.

She's an old Lady on top, and

she's a cheerleading ice skater

on bottom.

I'm mesmerized that you can take

the inspiration of a woman who

quite frankly looked fabulous

for four decades, and now

suddenly she's in a mall.

The skirt is so unbelievably

unflattering.

The top underneath the jacket is

just an insane concept.

That you would think that that

has anything to do with American

sportswear, I think it's

insulting.

I don't think the drop waist

is flattering with the belt,

'cause I just don't see any of

her in that.

Can I see it without the

jacket?

Your muse was a woman that is

iconic.

Yeah, she's fabulous.

Right.

I'm surprised that this is what

you have to deliver.

The top does not really fit.

It has to be sharp.

It has to, like, fit right.

It looks a bit sloppy.

Okay.

Mondo, tell us about your

look.

In my kitchen, I have a

picture of Jacqueline Kennedy.

She's turning around, 'cause the

paparazzi's chasing her.

I started playing with the

conceptual idea of, like, she's

always in the public eye.

I wanted to find prints and

textiles that were overblown

and just play with that idea.

And I just wanted to keep it

really smart, sleek, and

streamlined.

I didn't mean your model.

I meant you.

Tell us about your look.

Oh, my look?

Oh, wow.

I'm kidding.

Well, my roommates were

asking me to tap dance earlier.

So...I don't know.

It looks sharp.

Yeah, it is loud, but you

designed within the challenge.

I could see her in it.

The last time on the Runway,

the word cheap came up, so I

did really want to show that,

you know, I can still be true

to who I am, but also make it

look expensive.

Can we have a look at it

without the jacket?

I love that it has the color

in the inside.

You don't see it immediately,

but it looks complete.

I think the t-shirt's

fabulous.

The silhouette is very classic,

very well-tailored.

Jackie Kennedy would have worn

that skirt with little flat

shoes and a black turtleneck.

And it definitely does not look

cheap.

The mix was very clever.

And it's fun, yet it's still

elegant and chic.

For a modern take on it, it's

really--really well done.

And I think you look great

together.

When I think of

Jacqueline Kennedy, I think

classic, timeless elegance.

And I got inspired by triangles

and squares because I feel like

shapes are timeless.

So I played around with

contrasting of fabrics and

making sure that there was

something original or with my

signature on it.

Intrinsically, it's elegant.

It's got a sharpness.

Obviously, the styling is very

Jackie.

You know, with the glasses, with

the slick chignon.

Can you close the jacket for me?

I think there's something

interesting also that it's

tailored, but not in the

traditional men's sense.

I kind of like that you continue

the idea of the architectural

geometry.

And I like the neckline.

See, to me, there's almost

too much design in the top.

Because my eye is confused.

I don't really know what I'm

supposed to look at.

There's the opening--the

neckline.

Then there's this boob hole.

And then it almost looks like

too small this jacket for her

body.

Did made it too small.

without the coat?

It is better without the coat.

I love it like that.

I love the tailoring of it,

and I love the seam--the

asymmetrical seam along the

torso.

I actually like that twisted

tuxedo pant.

I think it's very chic.

It was smart to keep it black

and white.

I love the printed black and

white shoes.

I associate

Jacqueline Kennedy with an ease

and a chicness about her.

She wasn't afraid to have her

own style.

The main piece of my look

obviously are these pants,

which are draped, and they have

these big pockets on the side,

and I just felt that they were

just a great statement piece.

I have to tell you with this

look, I have a very hard time

keeping it together.

Because I want to, like, burst

out and crack up.

Especially for this challenge,

to come up with this?

It's like, I feel like I'm on a

different planet.

Wow.

I mean, can you imagine

Jackie Kennedy in these pants

with this ill-fitting top for

underneath and then this funny

bolero over it?

I don't see it at all.

At all.

Really?

At all.

I guess maybe I'm on a

different wavelength right now.

Can you show it from the back

too?

I mean, it's so tight on her

butt going in.

That's supposed to hang and be

low.

There is no real silhouette.

I don't see American sportswear

in that at all.

Well, that was one of my

struggles too, was this idea of

American sportswear.

I don't necessarily consider

myself an American sportswear

designer.

So what are you, a grand

couturier?

Did I miss something?

No.

I mean, come on.

If someone said to me, the

inspiration was mc hammer meets,

you know,

the Beverly hillbillies'

grandmother, I mean, that's

what that looks like.

The fit is horrific.

And then the ankle boot.

I mean, it's come on.

They look a little bit from

the 1800s, those boots.

Yeah, no, I mean, she's

making soap or something.

I don't know what she's doing.

It doesn't make any sense.

You think these pants fit

really great, right?

I know there's issues in the

crotch, which I tried to fix

this morning.

Maybe you have to sit down

here and look up on them.

Do you want to have a look from

down here?

Um, no, because I know what

it looks like from down on the

other side.

I mean, realistically, if

you're going for, like, a

relaxed silhouette, well, then

it should be relaxed.

This is just a train wreck.

You had a hard time working

with the silk Jersey too.

I can tell.

This isn't fitted enough to be

fitted, and it's not draped

enough to be draped.

It looks like a mistake.

I did want to take a risk,

I really thought that my vest

was well-made.

The judges were extremely

tough this week.

They basically laughed at me.

And that's really tough to hear.

That's really tough to take.

I actually really loved this,

so...

But, you know, at the end of

the day, it was very me.

This idea of this style icon

of the ages...

In our time.

And, like, and then she's in

our time, and it's just like,

that's so much pressure.

You know?

I could be the one going

home, because I think they were

just really not impressed.

Like, they thought it was really

boring.

I just have a feeling it could

be me.

I don't know.

I'm so sick of deliberating.

that we didn't like.

When I look at Valerie's, I

think there's no tailoring, no

imagination, nothing special,

no design.

It's incredibly boring and blah.

I just have a problem with

that black lycra skirt.

Ugly burgundy whatever that is.

None of the three pieces looked

special.

It's just too boring.

Let's talk about Andy.

I cannot see Jackie Kennedy in

this entire look.

I mean, not on this planet.

I think these pants didn't fit.

I'm just seeing ill-fitting and

ill-appropriate.

And when you look at Andy, how

he styled the model, why is she

wearing, like, Nicole Kidman's

boots from cold mountain?

I mean...

And her hair from

far and away.

And she's got the

far and away hair.

Maybe it's a Nicole Kidman

challenge.

The proportion of the skirt,

the belt, the tops were

It's also a sportswear

So the simple truth is, can you

kind of dissemble it and

actually make the pieces work?

I would take the belt off.

And the jacket.

Or wear the jacket with

something else.

It's just, you know, I mean,

it's terribly unflattering the

way he showed it.

That was also poor and sad.

He just overthought it.

Yeah, exactly.

Let's talk about the

designers that we did like.

Christopher.

The dress is an elegant

dress.

It's sexy without being vulgar.

Yeah, it fit her well.

It looked expensive.

I think he was clever in

picking that silhouette because

it was very classic, but that

shrug just killed it.

That shrug was horrible.

I call it a dirty dish rag.

Her shoulder toilet seat

cover?

Yeah.

It's been called many things

at this point.

I mean, it was an odd choice.

The dress is wearable,

though.

You'd wear that dress.

Yeah.

Well, I liked this.

I liked the dress.

But, yeah, I thought it fit her

well.

I thought it was tailored.

I thought it was a perfect

silhouette for Jackie

sportswear.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah.

Yeah.

We also liked mondo's.

I think mondo, you know, he

definitely got it.

I don't think his point of view

is what I would call very

Jackie Kennedy, but he managed

to do something that I think

was appropriate using her as a

muse.

He thought about sportswear

separates, but he still kept his

own personality.

He was the one that said he

had a picture of Jackie in his

apartment, right?

Yeah.

Well, it helped him.

He was able to capture just

that--that allure that she had.

It was that clean, it was a

classic...

The silhouette.

Yes. That silhouette.

It's funny that how he

managed to have these bold

colors and these big patterns,

that he actually managed for it

to still look chic.

I mean, I actually think it

was very smart, the pattern mix.

I thought it was really

interesting.

I like it too.

I like that he goes a little bit

outside the box and he doesn't

do what is expected.

Well, he stayed true to his

own style.

Let's talk about Ivy's.

It was sleek, and it was

elegant.

But then why are they all

designing so old?

Well, I mean, you know what,

I don't necessarily agree with

you totally on Ivy.

When you looked at the

proportions of that top, I

thought the neckline was great.

Um, I love that the collar kind

of flipped up asymmetrically.

I thought it was a great pant.

I liked her styling.

I think she had a problem with

the jacket.

I didn't mind the pants, and

I didn't mind the top, but,

you know, as a look...

I actually liked her fabric

choice, though, Heidi, for the

coat.

I liked the idea that it was

sheer.

Mm-hmm.

You know, it wasn't heavy

and opaque.

The look was elegant.

Yeah, and to be honest with

you, this is the most polished

look and probably the best one

that I have seen from her out

on the Runway.

Just want to remind, everybody,

this was the woman who did that

mumsy blouse with those ugly

printed pants in the first

episode.

I'll never forget that.
