[The Rise of Ning]

[Episode 35]

The person I like should first

be dignified in appearance,

have outstanding character,

and be talented,

but not a bookworm.

He should be worldly wise but not cynical.

He should be skilled in martial arts, resilient in spirit,

and also care for and cherish me.

As long as I'm with him,

he should understand what's on my mind

and make me feel secure for a lifetime.

Those are quite high standards.

You were describing

a paragon among people.

Is there such a person around us

besides me?

♫Though fate is fickle, every meeting is hard to predict♫

♫The shadows are paired, responding to whose desire?♫

♫As the shadows of the past fade, there's no need to chase after them♫

♫Your dreams are my wishes, forever intertwined♫

Greetings, Old Madam Wei,

♫It's easy to follow and protect you, but hard to tell you how I feel about you♫

Duke Ying.

Third Young Master Luo, long time no see.

♫Thinking about you brings a blush to my face♫

It has been a while since I last visited.

I was thinking of

catching up on the lessons

♫Asking what destiny is, we go on this journey together♫

today.

Alright. Go to class.

♫When you lean on me, both of us blush♫

Go to class.

Go, go.

Master,

what are we reading today?

I walked out of the eastern city gate and saw women as numerous as the clouds.

Though there were many women, none were the one I cherished.

It was only the one in white attire and a green skirt that brought me joy and closeness.

I walked out of the outer city gate and saw women as beautiful as flowers.

Though there were many beautiful women, none were the one I loved.

It was only the one in white attire with a red scarf that filled me with love and joy.

What book is this?

I don't understand.

Yining,

after I settle the matters

at hand,

I'll propose marriage.

After the proposal,

I'll teach you

what it means.

Are you going to propose marriage

to the Sun family already?

Who told you that?

Don't worry about that.

Why are you smiling?

After all that,

it turns out you're jealous.

I've already turned down the Sun family.

What does that have to do with me?

Of course it has to do with you.

♫I have no regrets, having found you in this life♫

Before I propose,

♫A dream of two♫

you can't let someone else take you away.

♫Sharing the hope that we'll be together forever♫

Well...

I don't have a say on that.

♫My heart will never change, I'll never regret it, and I'll always stay by your side♫

In this world, besides yourself,

who else has a say on your own fate?

♫Though the road ahead is long, we will face it together hand in hand♫

Then you'd better be good to me.

♫I have no regrets, having found you in this life. We will nurture this love together♫

♫We only hope that we'll be together forever♫

Not bad at all.

Who asked you to write an inscription for me?

Okay, okay. Then it was my fault for meddling.

Right.

You said before

that paintings are one thing and inscriptions are another.

In painting,

inscriptions are not always necessary.

Now you're

the Number One Scholar who achieved three firsts.

In the future, you might hold a high official position,

and I might have to

bid for this painting if I want it.

So, do you want me to write an inscription

or not?

Go ahead and write it then.

May we find joy each year,

no matter where we are,

as we do this night.

I hope you are as happy as you are today,

with a smile on your face

and me by your side.

Stop.

Sir.

They're inspecting people again.

Officer.

Officer, Officer.

It's just some fresh goods

that spoil easily.

Could you please let me through?

Let them pass.

Wait.

What's in the cart?

Officer,

it's just some fresh goods.

Open it and let us check.

No, no, Officer!

These are all packed in ice.

If you open it,

they'll spoil completely.

Please, Officer, have mercy.

I'm just a traveling merchant

trying to make a living.

Marquis Lu, the goods are fine.

What's wrong, Officer?

Yang Ling, it really is you.

Take him down!

I am Yang Ling, the Vice Minister of Revenue.

I was framed while investigating a smuggling case.

Someone wants to kill me to silence me!

Retreat!

After them!

Criminal Yang Ling,

surrender immediately.

I was framed!

Take him down.

Stop.

Marquis Lu.

Director Luo, you really are well-informed.

As soon as Yang Ling entered the city gate,

you came here right away.

I happened to be passing by

and heard a commotion here,

so I came to see

what was going on.

"Happened to be passing by."

The Imperial City Guard is currently capturing a wanted criminal.

The Court of Judicial Review should step aside, please.

The Court of Judicial Review has judicial authority

and can examine all officials and cases.

This case

should rightfully be handled by the Court of Judicial Review,

so I request the Imperial City Guard to stand down.

The Court of Judicial Review has the right to adjudicate cases,

but not the authority to apprehend criminals.

Once I capture the criminal

and report to His Majesty,

if His Majesty decrees that this case

be handed over to the Court of Judicial Review for adjudication,

I will certainly turn the criminal over to you.

Director Luo,

I was wrongly accused.

Please, uphold justice for me.

According to the laws of our dynasty,

when a criminal claims innocence,

the official with the authority to adjudicate

can take on the case first

and then report it to His Majesty.

The Imperial City Guard has already completed

its duty to apprehend the criminal.

The rest can be left to me.

Director Luo, please step aside.

-Prime Minister Wang. -Prime Minister Wang.

I didn't expect Yang Ling

to be captured so quickly.

As expected of Marquis Lu.

This is my duty.

Coincidentally,

His Majesty issued a decree today

that if Yang Ling is apprehended,

this case will be jointly adjudicated

by the Imperial City Guard and the Court of Judicial Review.

-Yes, Sir. -Yes, Sir.

Take the criminal Yang Ling to the Court of Judicial Review.

Prime Minister Wang, Marquis Lu,

I'll take my leave now.

Prime Minister Wang,

the Court of Judicial Review is getting involved at this time.

I'm afraid...

What's there to be afraid of?

The evidence against Yang Ling is conclusive.

No matter who conducts the trial,

it will be the same.

Sir, you are quite right.

Moreover, Yang Ling is merely a vice minister.

The one pulling the strings behind him must be Sun Jie.

Sun Jie?

Your Lordship!

Your Lordship,

that group of merchants has all run away.

Judging by their moves,

they are definitely the same gang

as Chen Jiuheng's associates.

Keep a close watch

on everyone inside and outside the city,

especially

the movements of that Luo Shenyuan.

Yes.

It's just a few lashes,

and he has already passed out?

Guards!

Wake him up with water.

I need to rest for a while.

Director Luo, please continue.

[Caifu Garden]

Shenyuan has always been prudent in his actions.

Since he's following the imperial order

to investigate Yang Ling's case,

what's there to be criticized?

This Yang Ling has been tortured

by him to the point where he'd rather be dead.

Many people are saying he's doing this

to clear himself of any involvement.

Clear himself of what involvement?

Tea is military supplies

and an important source of national tax revenue.

Smuggling tea

is a capital offense.

Besides, he and Yang Ling studied under the same teacher.

If he doesn't act harshly,

how can he clear himself of involvement?

Of course,

I agree with his actions.

A wise man knows how to adapt to circumstances.

My Third Brother is not that kind of person.

Whatever he does,

he has his own thoughts.

Yes, I think so.

Shenyuan

is not ungrateful.

That's a woman's naive view.

If Shenyuan really gets implicated,

then

the entire Luo family will be affected.

Shenyuan has his own considerations.

I think you're only seeing the surface,

not the essence.

Alright, alright.

You're right.

Well then, I'd like to see

what's beneath his surface, okay?

Mother.

When will Third Brother be back today?

He hasn't returned to Luo's Mansion these past few days.

He's been at the Court of Judicial Review investigating the case.

Until Yang Ling's case is closed,

I'm afraid he won't be able to come back.

Madam.

What's wrong? You seem flustered.

Mama Wu is here.

Mother, if you have something urgent,

I'll head back first.

Come back and stay for a couple of days when you're free.

Greetings, Master.

Greetings, Madam.

Mama Wu, please have a seat.

Thank you, Madam.

Mama Wu, since you're here,

why didn't you let us know in advance

so that I could have sent someone to meet you at the city gate?

Madam, your words

are too kind to me.

I'm just here to deliver a message.

You didn't need to come all this way

just to deliver a message;

sending a letter would have sufficed.

No. Old Madam said

this is an important matter,

and I must come personally

to convey it.

Mama Wu, then please go ahead.

No. Old Madam said

I must say it in front of you

and Mao together.

Ruixiang, go invite Mao over.

Yes.

Put it here.

Yixiu?

How did I fall asleep?

When did you arrive?

I just got here.

Have you been especially tired lately?

That's a good thing.

Being tired means wealth is rolling in.

I brought you some soup.

And I brought some dried fish

for Richie.

But Richie isn't a cat.

How can he eat dried fish?

Oh, right. I shouldn't have brought it.

But your kindness

shouldn't go to waste.

Richie,

you mustn't be a picky eater from now on.

Here,

have some soup.

Did you make this?

The private kitchen made this.

Sixth Miss.

Master Mao, someone has come from Lin'an.

Madam asked you to go to the front hall.

Who has come?

Mama Wu.

Why is she here?

Who is Mama Wu?

Mama Wu is my mother's personal maid

since childhood

and my sister's discipline nanny.

She is my mother's

first-tier servant

who has never left her side.

Perhaps it's about our marriage.

I'll be right back.

Where is she?

Let's go, let's go.

Mama Wu, you're here.

Master Mao, you're here.

Of all people,

why did my mother send you?

There's no one

who can take care of my mother

as well as you do.

Since you're here,

I'll boldly

start conveying the message.

He was a fine young master

when he was entrusted to your care,

and now he has turned into this!

You must seriously

reflect on this.

Mao and the Sixth Miss of the Luo family

are absolutely impossible!

I have repeatedly

rejected you,

yet you keep writing letter after letter

to Lin'an.

Do you want to

drive me to death?

If Mao persists with this idea,

then from now on,

the two of you

should never return to Lin'an!

And the Lin family pedigree

will not include your names!

What's wrong with Yixiu?

She has never even met her,

yet she's already made up her mind.

Mao,

please don't be angry with me.

I'm just delivering a message.

Then please relay this back:

I like Yixiu.

Here I, Lin Mao, swear to heaven

that I will marry no one but Yixiu!

If I go against this vow,

may I be struck by lightning,

die alone, and have no...

Old Madam also said

that if you are so unfilial

and resolutely determined

to marry the daughter of a murderer,

then she would rather die to keep her reputation intact.

If you were to go to the mourning hall,

you would be kicked out.

Mama Wu.

Master.

Yixiu is a daughter

of our Luo family.

Her mother did make a mistake,

but she has already been punished.

And Yixiu has

the full support of our entire Luo family.

Whether your Lin family approves or not,

we don't care.

Second Master...

However,

true love is precious, and the hard part is getting together.

These two kids sincerely love each other.

Shouldn't we, as elders,

set aside our prejudices

and support them?

Master, I will pass your words

to Old Madam.

But Old Master

and Old Madam

are quite resolute about it.

Though the Lin family is not of high nobility,

it still has

considerable influence in Jiangnan.

A wealthy family

relies on reputation and connections for business.

The Lin family cannot afford rumors and gossip.

What rumors and gossip?

Yixiu is innocent,

and she even put righteousness above family ties!

Enough.

We understood

Mother's intentions.

I've delivered the message.

It's time for me to leave.

Mama Wu, you've just arrived.

Why not stay a few more days

at the mansion?

Old Madam told me to leave

once the message is delivered.

Moreover, there's nothing more to say.

I didn't expect your Lin family

to have even more rules than our Luo family.

A merchant family.

Sister, Second Master,

my intention to marry Yixiu

will not change.

It seems that it will be very difficult

to persuade Father and Mother about this matter.

Let me think about it.

[Glorious Flowers in Spring and Solid Fruits in Autumn]

Richie?

Where's Yixiu?

Oh no.

[Danhua Garden]

Miss, don't be sad.

But what Mama Wu said

is the truth.

Yixiu.

Why are you here?

What about the guests?

Mama Wu has left.

What's wrong?

Why are your eyes red?

I just got some sand in my eyes.

It's nothing, really.

Let me blow it away for you.

We are not alone here.

Did you hear

what Mama Wu said?

Don't take it to heart.

I know your parents

mind my mother's past.

But no matter how unforgivable she may be,

she is still my mother.

I know.

So I will definitely

resolve this matter properly.

Trust me.

What's wrong?

You don't believe

I can persuade my parents?

I believe you.

But I don't want to put you in a difficult position.

If you were to fall out

with your family for me,

I would be

deeply guilty.

Just wait for me.

[Court of Judicial Review]

Miss,

are you waiting for Third Young Master to come out?

Miss Wei, what brings you here?

I'm just passing by.

Your Lordship, please make way.

Let's go.

What do you mean by this, Marquis Lu?

Miss Wei, you must have come here specifically

for an important matter, right?

I can help

take you inside.

I just want

to lend you a hand.

Please.

Just kill me.

It's not that easy to die.

Speak up.

Why did you

kill them all?

I didn't kill anyone.

They were already dead

when I got on the ship.

At this point,

stop lying.

I really didn't kill anyone.

It was a setup.

They lured me onto the ship

and arranged for someone to pretend to be injured

and accuse me of murder and silence them.

I was there to investigate a smuggling case.

I wanted to catch them alive.

Why would I kill anyone?

It wouldn't benefit me at all.

So you're saying

that the smuggler killed his own people

and sank the ship

just to frame you?

Who would believe that?

That's the truth.

Believe it or not, it's up to you.

Why are you here?

Miss Wei seems to have something important

to discuss with you.

So I brought her in.

Nonsense!

This is a place for the court to investigate cases,

not a place

where anyone can just enter!

Director Luo.

Are you implying

that I didn't follow the rules?

I'm

just stating the facts.

Go back.

Who was that girl just now?

Prime Minister Wang,

She was previously my sister from the Luo family

and is now the heiress of Duke Ying.

I've heard a bit about the matter

of Duke Ying acknowledging his daughter.

It seems

you are very close

to this young lady.

She even came to the Court of Judicial Review to find you.

It's not quite like that.

After she went to Duke Ying's Mansion,

we rarely see each other.

I don't know why she came to find me.

It's alright.

You can go out and ask her.

No need for that. The case is more important.

Alright.

Miss Wei,

you probably haven't seen this side

of your Third Brother, have you?

Whether I have seen it or not

is between him and me.

It has nothing to do with you, does it?

Yang Ling is his fellow disciple,

yet your Third Brother could even bring himself to harm him.

Your Lordship, why are you telling me this?

As a woman, affairs of the court

are beyond my understanding.

What?

You refuse to believe that

your Third Brother is this kind of person, do you?

Marquis Lu, don't you have any official business?

You keep blocking my way every few days.

A person who has endured and hidden his true potential

to get to this point

shows that

he would pay any price

and use any means

to get what he wants.

Haven't you realized this yet?

I know better than anyone

what kind of person he is.

Today,

he can sacrifice his bond with his fellow disciple;

then tomorrow, he can sacrifice

his familial ties as well.

The Luo family was mean to him before.

Do you think someone like him

would care about

the familial ties that you care about?

Moreover,

he's a bastard.

Don't you dare insult him like that.

Miss Wei,

I'm really afraid that you might get hurt.

Lu Jiaxue,

you are the last person

qualified to say that.

Miss, are you alright?

Let's go.

Where are you going?

I'm going back to Lin'an.

Is it for Yixiu?

Yes.

Mao.

Sister, you don't need to persuade me.

I've already made up my mind.

I want to explain everything to Father and Mother in person.

I'm not trying to persuade you.

I just want to say

that it might be better if I go back with you

so that I can help you.

Sister.

Sister, you've already

helped me a lot.

I can't rely on you

for everything, can I?

I've decided

that I'll give Yixiu a stable life

through my own efforts.

You've grown up.

Then I'll arrange a carriage for you tomorrow.

Don't recklessly go back alone.

It's not safe on the road.

Sister, I knew you were the best.

Yixiu is a good girl.

If you marry her, I'll be at ease.

When I go back, I will definitely do my best.

I need to let Father and Mother know

what a wonderful girl Yixiu is.

If you

want to marry Yixiu,

you need to think more

before you speak and act.

Don't always be stubborn

and just argue back.

Don't you know how

Father and Mother are?

They respond better to kindness than to harshness.

Come on, help me tie this.

[Glorious Flowers in Spring and Solid Fruits in Autumn]

Sister,

I don't need to take so many things.

You don't have to prepare these for me.

These are all gifts for Father, Mother,

and the family.

You can't go home

empty-handed.

Oh, right.

Remember to say goodbye

to Old Madam later.

You should observe the proper etiquette.

I almost forgot about that.

Sister, I'm leaving.

Be careful on the way.

Go now.

Miss!

Miss!

What's the matter?

I heard that Young Master Lin

went to Muxi Hall early this morning

to say goodbye to Old Madam

and is now on his way back to Lin'an.

Miss!

Second Aunt.

Yixiu, you're here.

The private kitchen

happened to make some pastries today.

Let's try them together.

Second Aunt,

let's hurry

and bring Lin Mao back.

Why?

I know

he went back for me.

Don't worry.

He'll be back soon.

Actually,

I heard what Mama Wu said

that day.

Good girl,

don't take it to heart.

They weren't

targeting you personally.

But

what if Lin Mao really

severs ties with his family for me?

What if he angers

his parents?

I don't want him to turn against his family

because of me.

So you really want to just stand by

and watch him marry another girl?

This white sugar cake is crystal clear,

and many people say it's delicious.

But our Mao

prefers this black sesame pastry.

He always says

that only those who have tasted it

know how sweet it is.

Mao just wants to fight for

what he wants most.

Let him do it.

Don't worry.

Before he left, I told him

to speak nicely to my parents

and not to force it.

If he really gets beaten up,

it's fine.

He's always been strong.

A few beatings

won't be a big deal.

If he really gets crippled,

I'll go to Lin'an right away.

Don't worry.

Here.

Eat up.

Thank you, Second Aunt.

[Court of Judicial Review]

I'm not wearing it.

Young Master.

Sir, why are you here?

Director Luo, I dare not respond

to how you address me.

His Majesty has already made a decision

to have Yang Ling executed in the autumn

and ordered me to retire and go back home.

Are you satisfied now?

I dare not, Sir.

Father.

Third Young Master,

is there really no way

left for Brother Yang's case?

I can accept retirement and going back home,

but Yang Ling was framed.

You should think of a way to save him!

Sir,

the witnesses and evidence are all there.

I have no way out.

You know full well

that Yang Ling was framed

and His Majesty was deceived by villains.

As the presiding judge,

you decided to take a life

without clarifying the truth.

How are you any different from Wang Yuan and his gang?

The truth is that Yang Ling

acted recklessly and impulsively.

I've said it before

that acting that way

would only lead him to death.

You...

This is

my good student.

Sir,

His Majesty asking you to retire and go back home

was out of consideration for old times.

I advise you

not to get involved in this matter any further.

Good.

How perceptive of you,

Director Luo.

If I had known what kind of person you were,

I would never have taken you as my student.

Father.

Sir.

Get lost!

Even if I were to fall and die,

I wouldn't let you help me!

Sir, please don't be angry.

Shut up!

I don't have

an ungrateful student like you!

Father,

be careful.

Young Master, are you alright?

I'm afraid the fact that Mr. Sun kicked you

may be the talk of the town

by tomorrow morning.

Isn't that exactly what we want?

Yang Ling,

do you have anything else to say?

Yes.

I want to say that...

Louder!

You hit me too lightly.

If you want to gain Wang Yuan's trust,

this isn't enough.

You need to act like

you're really forcing a confession out of me.

Otherwise, you won't be able to deceive him.

I won't let you die.

What joy is there in life, and what fear is there in death?

You were right before.

I was too impulsive.

This old scoundrel is cruel.

He is not easy to fool.

You are more cautious than I am,

but still, you need to be extremely careful.

Take care of yourself

and those around you.

I know.

I'm afraid it would worry our teacher

and cause the world to misunderstand you.

What I want to say is that

you are forcing a confession!

Luo Shenyuan,

you ungrateful wretch!

I've misjudged you!

I've misjudged you!

[Yanrong Pavilion]

Take care.

Young Master,

it seems that Lady Yining

hasn't left Yanrong Pavilion.

I saw Qingqu.

Third Brother?

Why are you here?

You must be hungry.

I'll go make you something to eat.

I'm not hungry.

About that day...

I'm sorry.

♫Love is hard to catch♫

That day,

I was too reckless.

♫The intertwined destinies are hard to unravel♫

And...

what you said is right.

♫Afraid of missing it, making mistakes, and the begonia's fleeting bloom♫

♫So the more you care about love, the more you dare not say it♫

Did I scare you?

♫You're like a poetic song♫

♫One intersection is engraved in my heart♫

♫No matter the torrential rain along the way, after a thousand twists and turns♫

Third Brother,

about you and Mr. Yang,

what are your thoughts?

♫My heart remains as it was, guarding the corner♫

I know you had a plan all along.

But have you considered the consequences?

You can't catch tiger cubs

without entering the tiger's den.

But I'm worried about you.

The tiger's den is dangerous.

What if you don't get the tiger cub

and end up in danger?

But this is something I must do.

Good! Good bite.

Greetings, Prime Minister Wang.

Marquis Lu, you're here. Take a seat.

Alright,

you may leave now.

Yes.

Look.

Golden Armored General,

you need to give it your all.

If you don't listen to me again,

I'll put you

in the fire pan

and roast you.

The case of Yang Ling has already been closed.

You can rest assured.

What happened in Quanzhou was quite interesting.

I wonder who was

stirring up trouble in it.

Given Yang Ling's current predicament,

he might say something reckless

out of desperation to shirk some of the blame.

He doesn't

seem to be lying.

Useless thing.

Take this Golden Armored General

and that...

that profit-sharing contract outside

and burn them up.

Let's burn them up right here.
