[The Rise of Ning]

[Episode 34]

Is that Marquis Lu?

You invited him?

No, we didn't.

The Duke's Mansion is really high-profile.

Even Marquis Lu has come here for the Flower Festival.

But why did Marquis Lu

come over to the flower hall?

Clearly, he's here to deliver

an imperial decree.

Didn't you see

there are two palace attendants following him?

My Lady, a guest has arrived.

Greetings, Madams.

Old Madam,

on this Flower Festival, we are here to appreciate the flowers together.

Her Majesty has sent a twin thousand-petal lotus

as the Flower Festival's top prize.

Our thanks to Her Majesty.

Where did they get lotus at this time of year?

Could it be dried flowers?

In the palace, there are gardeners who specialize

in the art of forcing flowers to bloom out of season.

They use water in different temperatures

to cultivate flowers that aren't in season.

I've seen it when I went to the palace with my grandmother.

It's incredibly rare and precious.

Duke Ying's Mansion is indeed high-profile.

Even Her Majesty sent a gift,

and it even came with Marquis Lu.

Today is the Flower Festival.

I went to the palace

to present a tribute of blossoms to Her Majesty.

Upon learning that this year's Flower Festival

is hosted by Duke Ying's Mansion,

and that County Lady Qingcheng

is attending the event for the first time,

she specially ordered me

to bring the top prize to enliven the event.

Marquis Lu, you've been very thoughtful.

Since that's the case,

there's no need to adhere

to all those formalities.

Invite the gentlemen from the front yard

to the grand garden

and let them rely on their own luck

to go for the top prize.

Yes, Old Madam.

This way, please, gentlemen.

Ladies and gentlemen,

whoever can obtain the twin lotus

is as good as winning the top prize.

If this twin lotus

can be displayed in our shop,

it will surely bring Yanrong Pavilion great renown.

Do you want it?

Yu.

I must win the top prize.

You must help me.

Don't worry, Sister.

Easy-peasy.

Sister, you can forget about

the top prize today.

I didn't expect Third Nephew

to be skilled in archery.

When did Third Brother

learn all this?

My Third Brother

has plenty of skills.

Back then, you even chose to be injured

rather than reveal the fact that you know martial arts.

But today, you're quite open about it.

Marquis Lu, you flatter me.

I've only practiced

a few moves for physical fitness.

I seek to win this prize

to give it to Miss Wei as a gift in celebration

of her title as County Lady.

Might you

have the same intention?

Indeed, I do.

That would be fine.

Why don't we use this as an opportunity

and present this

to Miss Wei together?

What do you think?

That sounds good.

We got it, Sister.

Let me take a look.

This Number One Scholar Luo

usually seems

so gentle.

I never expected he could

be on par with Marquis Lu on martial arts.

Could it be that Director Luo and Marquis Lu are both...

Isn't it obvious?

Miss Wei is quite something.

Miss Wei, you truly are the center of attention.

On today's Flower Festival, not only are you the main officiant,

but you also had two men

vying for the top prize just for you.

So what?

Marquis Lu and my Third Brother

gave it to Yining willingly.

Do you have a problem with that?

No problem at all.

I'm just saying that Miss Wei's pretty lucky.

Don't pay attention to these

gossipmongers.

The feast hasn't even started,

and she already seems full.

A butterfly, a butterfly!

My father...

intends to betroth me

to Third Young Master Luo.

I just got distracted

by a butterfly

and accidentally

stepped on your dress.

It's alright.

My Lady,

the banquet in the flower hall is all set.

Old Madam asked you

to bring the young ladies to the feast.

She'll be eating with the madams

in Jing'an Hall.

Sister, why don't you go get changed first?

Ladies, please have a seat

and make yourselves comfortable.

Start with some snacks.

This wine is so delicious.

This pastry is wonderful!

Alright.

You may leave now.

-Yes. -Yes.

So, Sister,

is it tasty or not?

Of course it's tasty!

Come on, Seventh Sister.

Come here.

It's so good.

Seventh Sister, sit down.

Tell me,

what did you add

to these pastries?

They taste so different from the ones sold outside.

Tell me.

I'll have our chef make them for me later.

We added chestnuts.

No wonder.

I was wondering why the flavor

was different from those sold outside.

It's especially delicious.

You can hardly stop eating,

can you?

What's wrong with my hand?

Hurry up and take a look.

It's so itchy.

Mine too!

What's going on?

You have something on your neck too.

What's happening here?

Why are my hands so itchy?

Me too.

My neck is itchy as well.

It's all red.

What's this rash?

It's so itchy.

Why am I feeling itchy too?

Why is it turning red?

No idea, but it's so itchy.

Stop scratching.

It'll only get redder.

Aren't you itchy?

I...

I seem to be fine.

Why has everyone started itching?

My hand is so itchy.

Mine too.

Look.

What should we do?

Physician,

are the ladies alright?

Old Madam, please don't worry.

It's just redness and itchiness

due to a rash.

It will subside after some rest.

Just remind the ladies

not to scratch too hard

to avoid any scarring.

Physician,

do you know

what might have caused this?

That's hard to say.

The ladies have all been outside today,

and with so many flowers around,

it's possible that they encountered

something that easily causes itching.

How is that possible?

This isn't our first Flower Festival.

Nothing like this

has ever happened before.

Exactly.

This has never happened before.

Yes.

Exactly.

Ladies,

did you use anything today

that you haven't used before?

Have we?

What?

The fragrance.

The only thing different today

is that I used

the fragrance Miss Wei brought.

Yes, I just used it too.

Impossible.

There's no way that there could be an issue

with something from Yanrong Pavilion.

How is that not possible?

Look at all these people

with rashes and itching.

They all used the fragrance.

Is that just a coincidence?

Yanrong Pavilion?

More like Disfigurement Pavilion!

This fragrance is pure flower extract,

with absolutely no additives.

Exactly.

And I've used plenty of products

from Yanrong Pavilion before

and never had a problem.

Stop it.

You two sisters are in cahoots.

I bet Yanrong Pavilion

is owned by you two.

Don't talk nonsense.

Physician, have a look.

This is the fragrance.

Bring out yours too.

That's hard to say.

Even natural products

aren't always harmless.

Not to mention

this fragrance is highly concentrated.

I brought the fragrance here.

If there's really a problem,

I'll take full responsibility.

Just please

give me some time.

I'll definitely get to the bottom of it.

Marquis Lu,

a toast to you.

These people are so snobbish.

As soon as Marquis Lu arrived, they lined up to toast him.

It's quite good.

We finally got some peace.

Here, a toast to Marquis Lu.

Young Master.

I just saw that a physician

was invited into the flower hall.

So I inquired about it

and learned that the ladies in the flower hall

have suddenly all broken out in rashes.

Is Yining alright?

The strange thing is that

Seventh Miss is the only one unaffected.

I'll go check on Yixiu.

Uncle, it's all ladies over there.

It's not appropriate for you

to go over so rashly.

Sixth Master, since they've already called for a physician,

it should be fine.

But I'd bet the physician's medicine

won't work as well as mine.

Have Qingqu call Yining out.

Yes.

Third Brother.

I'm glad you're alright.

I'm fine.

Then I can be at ease.

You know about

what happened in the flower hall?

I think their target in this matter

is you.

I think so too.

Think back.

Before the incident,

did you do anything

different from others?

Did you?

I did recall one thing.

Qingqu,

help me check it out.

Yes.

Sister.

Sister.

Miss Wei wants to wash her hands.

I need to prepare for her.

Sister, please follow me.

Is there a towel?

They just ran out.

The laundry hasn't delivered

the cleaned ones yet.

The basins and the towels

were all sent over from the laundry

after being cleaned?

Yes.

What should we do now?

It's alright.

I'll just get another towel

for the Miss.

Well then, thank you.

Where has Miss Wei gone?

Whether she has found anything or not,

she should at least send someone to give us an explanation.

What's there to investigate?

I'd say it's definitely that fragrance

from Yanrong Pavilion that's problematic.

Miss Wei gave us

something with unclear origins

to use.

What was she up to?

Exactly.

How can you say that

before we know the full story?

Mother, I was not wrong.

People from low-class households

are simply not presentable,

and the things they use aren't either.

I understand

that every one of you ladies

has your doubts.

If this was indeed

the doing of our Wei family,

I'll make sure you get an explanation.

But if it wasn't,

and someone's framing us,

I won't let it go easily either.

Wait.

Sister Qingqu.

Are these the towels

the ladies used to wipe their hands

during the feast?

Yes. What's the matter?

Our Miss may have left her jewelry in the towel

when she was washing her hands.

I'm here to check.

They'll be hard to find

if they get put in water.

Then you'd better take a look.

Miss Wei's belongings are quite precious.

If anything's lost,

I can't bear the responsibility.

No, no, it's not valuable,

just something our Miss holds dear.

Have these towels

been under your care the whole time?

Yes.

I'm the maid in charge of laundering.

All the used towels

are ours to wash.

Then who sent them to the banquet?

The servants at the banquet

sent them over.

Was it six little maids who came

to fetch them today?

No.

It was Lady Zhao's maid who came for them.

She said they were short-staffed,

so she came to help.

Miss,

that's how it was.

Do you need my help?

If this matter is looked into thoroughly,

it will bring shame to Grandmother,

and the Wei family

will be ridiculed by others.

I didn't expect you

to care so much about the Wei family.

I didn't expect it myself.

It seems the Wei family has treated you well.

Father has been really good to me.

And although Grandmother is strict with me,

she genuinely cares about me.

I don't want to disappoint them.

Alright, I see.

I'd rather

handle this matter myself.

Go back now.

Grandmothers, it's my fault

for making you worry.

Yining,

how's the investigation going?

Ladies, do you remember

if you did anything together

before the itching began?

We only drank flower wine

and ate flower cakes

together.

And before that?

Before that?

We washed our hands.

Shortly after that,

our hands started itching.

You didn't wash your hands, did you?

When you came in,

the maids had already left, right?

Ladies, do you remember

if your palms started itching first,

then you touched your neck and cheeks

with your palms,

and then your neck and face

began to itch?

Indeed.

I think so.

Indeed,

wherever our hands touched,

it started to itch.

Qingqu.

Are these the towels we used earlier

to dry our hands?

Physician,

could you please check

if there's anything

on these towels?

This towel has yam sap on it.

Yam sap?

Yam sap?

Yes, it's yam.

What's wrong with yam?

We often use yam to make soup in our house.

We've never seen such symptoms before.

Eating cooked yam

poses no issue.

However, the sap on raw yam skin

can indeed cause redness and itching quite easily.

Ladies, if you still have doubts,

there's another way to confirm.

Qingqu,

bring hot water and salt.

Saltwater isn't suitable for the face.

Ladies,

you can use a hot towel compress instead.

The hotter the water, the better.

It really stopped itching. What about you?

It really did.

Sister.

It's no longer itching.

Well,

why was there

yam sap on the towels?

I don't know.

Today's Flower Festival

is hosted by our Wei family.

Although this incident

hasn't caused serious harm,

it was

clearly intentional.

Our Duke Ying's Mansion

will definitely investigate it thoroughly

♫I'd rather jump into a fire just to break through the night♫

and provide you with an explanation.

♫I would rather fall and reveal my destiny♫

Ning, tell me,

did you already know

who did this?

♫I would rather it be in vain and let me be your support♫

Grandmother,

I've been through

some major storms in my life.

♫How would I be afraid to end up as bubbles?♫

This kind of thing is just a small matter.

Alright.

I'll be off then.

♫Love is drifting side by side; in the end, there will be a destination♫

Take good care of Grandmother.

Bye.

If anything comes up, have Qingqu or Xuezhi

send me a message.

I'll come to teach you in a few days.

You'd better focus on yourself first.

What's wrong with me?

Marquis Lu, thank you

for coming uninvited today.

Did something happen

in the flower hall today?

There's no need for you to worry about matters

within the inner courtyard of Wei's Mansion.

I have one more request.

No matter what the request is,

I will agree to it.

Today's royal bestowal

was a result of your request,

wasn't it?

This is your first time

attending an important event

as Duke Ying's daughter.

Of course it should be presentable.

Marquis Lu,

please don't do such things in the future.

As long as you like it,

I can do anything for you.

Well then, Marquis Lu,

please take your leave.

Sister Mingzhu.

Did you scratch yourself today?

No.

Thank you for your concern, Sister.

Ting?

You're back from school?

I heard that Yining

got the top prize today.

Can I play with it?

That twin lotus doesn't have much to play with.

Tomorrow,

if there's something else fun,

I'll buy it for you.

Why are you not happy?

Today, I saw a guest

bring a small dagger as a gift,

thinking you would like it,

so I brought it back for you.

Really?

Suxi, hurry.

How is it? Do you like it?

I'm sorry, Suxi.

I'm in a panic.

Ting broke out in a rash again.

I need to tell our Miss as soon as possible.

I'm sorry.

What?

He broke out in a rash?

Ting only breaks out in a rash

when he comes into contact with yam.

Have we cleaned

everything up over here?

Yes, everything has been cleaned.

The bottle that held the yam

was thrown away right away.

I even made sure to wash my hands

when I got back.

Well...

Well...

What about the dagger?

Did you clean it thoroughly

before giving it to him?

You know very well that Ting

breaks out in a rash as soon as he touches yam!

I'm sorry.

If anything happens to Ting,

what should I do?

I shouldn't have done it.

Now it has even affected Ting.

Sister Mingzhu.

At such a late hour,

where are you going?

I heard Ting broke out in a rash.

I'm going to check on him.

Ting is fine.

It was a misunderstanding.

Grandmother has always cared for Ting the most.

Although it's just a misunderstanding,

she must have been very worried.

I'll go check on Grandmother.

Both Grandmother and Ting are fine.

However,

I'd like to talk with you.

Seeing how much you care

for Grandmother

and Ting,

I'm really moved.

It reminds me of

the time at Luo's Mansion.

Although

I'm not

really family with them.

Sister,

what do you mean by that?

I originally thought

that since they had learned

that I have no blood relation to them,

they would treat me poorly.

But to my surprise,

their affection for me

didn't diminish at all.

That's when I understood

that the connections between people

aren't solely defined by blood;

what truly matters is sincerity.

Indeed.

Sincerity is the most precious thing.

The status of the heiress of the Duke

is not what I desire.

For me,

it is just a title.

During my time at Luo's Mansion,

because of my birth mother,

I've had enough of conflicts.

Now, I only want to live

a peaceful and simple life.

Human nature is complex and suspicious.

However, I believe

that as long as you have faith in something,

you will receive it.

Where your heart is,

there you are,

and there is home.

Sister,

do you understand what I'm saying?

Sister,

you don't need to beat around the bush.

I know why you're here tonight.

What happened in the Flower Festival

was my doing.

Grandmother and Father

asked me to accept you.

Although I was reluctant,

I still tried my best.

But after all,

people have their own selfish motives.

In fact, I am quite wary of you.

You are the heiress,

but I am just an adopted daughter.

I did such a foolish thing

in a moment of confusion.

I didn't expect you

to be such a

candid person.

Please don't say that about me.

A mistake is a mistake.

Honestly, I regretted it

as soon as it happened.

Since you are being so straightforward,

I will speak plainly as well.

To be honest, for me,

whether I'm from a prestigious family

or a humble one,

it doesn't matter.

I only hope for family members

to care for one another

and treat each other sincerely.

Having a place

to call home is enough for me.

I see.

Actually,

the fact that you knew this was my doing

but didn't expose me

♫The south wind passes through the world like brocade♫

shows me your character.

Don't worry.

I won't do such a thing

♫Begonias nestle in front of the blue pond♫

ever again.

Since we've cleared the air,

♫The scent of tea drifts across the long streets♫

Sister,

there's something

I want to tell you frankly.

♫If your heart is happy, it will be clear skies♫

Please, go ahead.

My invitation to the Luo sisters to our mansion

♫Home is like a harbor, surrounding you♫

and taking you to Marquis of Anbei's Mansion

were all at

♫The moon waxes and wanes, but when people return, the moon becomes full♫

my sworn brother's request.

I know.

That day at Marquis of Anbei's Mansion,

♫The peaceful times turn the years into something ordinary♫

if it weren't for you,

I wouldn't have been able to get away.

So you know about all these things?

Of course.

That's why I know

♫Time sketches the bustling world♫

you're not a bad person.

Besides, how could Grandmother and Father

♫The red string covers the eaves; dark hair changes into white♫

have raised a bad child?

♫The sound of half of my life comes to my dream♫

Old Madam,

Lady Mingzhu is here.

You may leave now.

Close the door.

Yes.

I made a grave mistake.

Please punish me, Grandmother.

What mistake did you make?

What happened today

was my doing,

and I even tried to frame Yining.

Why would you do that?

Because I felt insecure.

Sister was getting so much attention,

and you were starting to like Yining more and more.

I felt like

I was losing the only person

I could rely on.

You silly child.

How foolish you are.

Just because I like Yining

doesn't mean I don't like you anymore.

I was wrong.

After doing it,

I don't even know

who I am anymore.

Get up.

I've brought shame to you

and to the Wei family.

I'm too ashamed to get up.

I knew it was you all along.

I was just waiting for you

to admit your mistake.

As expected,

nothing escapes your keen eye.

The fact you admitted your mistake on your own

shows you can distinguish right from wrong.

The willingness to correct a mistake is a great virtue.

It's alright.

Get up now.

[Ancient City of Fortune]

I guarantee this bottle of fragrance is pure extract.

I tried hundreds of times

to extract

such a pure fragrance.

Give it a try.

It has such a clean and fresh scent.

Oh, right.

I heard from the maids at Duke Xu's Mansion

that their young lady

loves this plum blossom fragrance a lot.

Really?

Really.

I'll take two bottles.

Two bottles for me too.

-Me too. -Two bottles for me too.

Manager, check, please.

Sure thing.

Look at you,

you're refined and graceful,

with an extraordinary presence.

Why not buy two bottles

for good luck?

Boss,

bad news.

Everyone wants the rose fragrance,

but it's sold out.

You must be the boss, right?

Sir, we want the rose fragrance.

Yes, we all want it.

Ladies, ladies,

I'm terribly sorry.

We are out of stock.

How about this?

Let's sign a pre-order.

If you want it, pay a deposit

and come back to pick it up in five days.

It's settled then, five days from now.

Yes.

You'd better keep your word.

Certainly.

Come on, let's go and sign the pre-orders.

This way.

I want two bottles.

Wait for me.

How is it?

The money we made today

is more than what we earned

in the last few months combined.

I didn't expect you

to be so good at making money.

It's a pity my sister didn't see

that I inherited our Lin family's

business acumen.

But Sixth Uncle,

with so many orders today,

can you handle it?

Yes, there are only five days left.

It's all money.

Money makes the world go round.

We should get more orders

and work me to the bone.

Alright, go.

I'll be off then.

Young Master Cheng took action

before Yang Ling boarded the ship.

Chen Long and Chen Yang

were killed,

but Yang Ling was abducted.

Your Lordship, do you think

the person who abducted Yang Ling

is Luo Shenyuan?

I've underestimated him.

Who else could it be?

Have Cheng Lang set up strict surveillance.

You keep a close watch outside the city

and report to me if anything happens.

Yes.

Mr. Yang, you're awake.

Who are you?

Don't be afraid, Sir.

You'll understand once you read the letter.

Shenyuan sent you?

Yes.

Young Master was worried that Wang Yuan's people

would harm you,

so he ordered me

to rush over here as fast as I could.

Mr. Yang,

now they're crying thief to catch a thief,

framing you

as the real smuggler.

If you want to go out now,

you might need to conceal your identity.

Nonsense!

I don't even know

those smugglers!

So the urgent priority now

is to send you back to the capital first,

and then find a way

to clear your name.

Alright.

This is a false accusation!

I don't believe for a second

that Yang Ling is that kind of person.

Sir, please don't get angry yet.

Now, only if we find Senior

can we uncover the truth.

But...

But now the authorities

have issued a warrant for his capture,

and they are searching for him everywhere.

He's nowhere

to be found.

Greetings, Father.

Third Young Master.

I specially made some pastries

for you to try.

I didn't expect Third Young Master to be here as well.

Put it here.

Then I won't disturb you further.

I'll take my leave.

Shenyuan,

you've reached the age

for marriage.

Last time I visited Luo's Mansion,

I discussed this matter with your father.

I know you have great ambitions

yet to be realized,

but establishing a career should come after starting a family.

You can get engaged first

and get married later.

I already have someone in mind.

I hope to make some achievements in the future

before proposing.

Which girl is it?

Your father didn't mention it last time.

I haven't brought it up with my family yet.

Sir, I've made up my mind.

I won't marry anyone but her.

Alright.

It seems it's not meant to be.

Young Master,

Qi'an has rescued Mr. Yang

and is on the way escorting him back to the capital.

But why did they

kill all their own people?

Chen Long and Chen Yang

were Wang Yuan's trusted subordinates.

Wasn't that too high a cost?

Cheng Lang must have gone to Quanzhou

after he left the capital.

So, Lu Jiaxue

was trying to silence them all at once

to free himself from Wang Yuan's control.

Gathering for profit and scattering when it's gone.

He has always been ruthless

in this regard.

I see.

Let's go to Duke Ying's Mansion.

Yes.

[Huanjing Pavilion]

My Lady, you're drawing Yanrong Pavilion?

Who are these two people in the drawing?

Miss,

just now, Madam Shen came to the Duke's Mansion.

Was it about the Flower Festival?

Old Madam told her everything honestly,

and Madam Shen didn't say much about it.

Grandmother is such an upright person.

They won't hold onto it.

Besides this,

Madam Shen's main reason for coming this time

is to propose marriage to you.

Propose marriage?

His Lordship has just returned to the mansion

and has been called by Old madam to talk.

What?

The Shen family also wants to marry Yining?

What are you doing?

You're acting like the enemy

has come to your doorstep.

It looks like my daughter is too outstanding.

It's only been a short while since she returned,

and so many people are interested in her.

Yining has indeed reached the age

for marriage.

The Shen family is an earl's household,

which is quite a prestigious background.

I don't care whether it's prestigious or not.

Mother, I've made up my mind.

I'm not considering Yining's marriage for now.

Moreover, if I were to choose a son-in-law,

my only requirement would be that

he must be someone Yining likes.

As long as she likes him and he has good character,

even if he comes from a humble background,

that would be acceptable.

Children's marriages

have always been based on parental orders

and matchmakers' arrangements.

How can we let a girl

decide for herself?

Other families can let whoever they want take charge.

I don't care.

But for my daughter,

she must be the one in charge

and find someone she likes.

I know

you are worried about Yining.

But my concern is that

if you keep being

so picky,

it might end up delaying her marriage.

Well, I don't care.

If Yining likes someone,

I can personally go and propose.

But if she doesn't like him

and hasn't found someone she fancies,

I would rather support her for life.

What are you talking about?

Mother,

I've actually heard about

this Young Master Shen.

He's just a good-for-nothing

loser.

How could our Yining

possibly marry him?

Right?

This Shen Yu

does have some shortcomings.

Not just some shortcomings.

But you haven't even asked her.

How do you know

that Yining wouldn't be interested in the Shen family?

Do we even need to ask?

Everyone in the capital

knows what kind of person

he is,

Mother.

If you don't believe me,

call her over. She...

Grandmother, Father.

I heard everything

you were talking about from outside.

Well... that Young Master Shen...

Don't worry, Father.

I'm not interested

in that Young Master Shen.

See?

What did I tell you?

How could my daughter like him?

Yining,

your father

is truly reluctant to part with you.

But

you have reached the age

for marriage.

Your grandmother makes a good point.

Everyone should get married when they reach a certain age.

I just want to ask you,

is there

someone you fancy?

Yes.

What kind of boy do you like?

Share it with us.

Let your father and me hear it.

The person I like should first

be dignified in appearance,

have outstanding character,

and be talented,

but not a bookworm.

He should be worldly wise

but not cynical.

He should be skilled in martial arts,

resilient in spirit,

and also care for and cherish me.

As long as I'm with him,

he should understand what's in my mind

and make me feel secure for a lifetime.
