[theme music playing]

[theme music concludes]

-[instrumental music playing] -[seagulls squawking]

Welcome to the Bureau of Magical Things weekly meeting.

Agenda item one, the magical graffiti.

-Or more specifically… -[dog barking]

[Lily] …the artist responsible for it.

We told the DMI we'd find this miscreant and we haven't.

There hasn't been any more graffiti, has there?

-Not that we know of. -So let's drop it.

How do we know it won't start again?

I have a feeling that whoever has done this

has woken up and realized it would not be wise to continue.

-[whimsical music playing] -[indistinct chatter]

-[scooter rumbling] -[frog croaking]

[scooter clatters]

[chirps]

-[papers rustling] -[dramatic music playing]

Come on, come on, come on, come on.

[dramatic music concludes]

[exhales] Yes.

[Lily] Item three, meeting refreshments.

I could bring stuff from Dad's bakery.

It's not right that you should have to do it all the time.

Wouldn't it be good for each of us to explore the wonderful world of baking?

-No. -I don't have time.

My oven hates me.

Fine, if you want refreshments, bring your own.

-Kyra, can I talk to you? -Darra, we're in the middle of a meeting.

It's important.

What is more important than a Bureau meeting?

-That's a trick question, right? -[exhales] Sorry Lily, I'll be right back.

[soft music playing]

Anybody else notice how they're always going off

doing secret things?

-[whooshing] -[sighs]

What's important?

I wasn't having any luck looking for references to lost temples

and then I remembered the warehouse in Bangkok.

-What about it? -Remember what we saw?

[dramatic music playing]

The cobra statue.

So I changed my search criteria and started looking for

references to cobra statues.

And?

-[dramatic music continues] -[Kyra gasping]

[exhales]

Come on.

So, that's it for the agenda, no one else has any other business?

Yes, Peter?

I propose the Bureau wears a uniform.

I've got some preliminary ideas.

Peter, I think I speak for everyone when I say, "No."

-[whimsical music playing] -[box rattles]

-Oh, dear. -"Oh, dear" what?

It seems Imogen's assessment of the graffiti situation

was a trifle premature.

How?

The frog's back on the community art wall.

Where are you going? We have to plan our response.

Imogen!

-What's with her? -At least I can rely on you two to stay.

[cellphone ringing, vibrating]

I have to, it's my dad.

-[cellphone beeps] -[Peter] Hey, Dad.

Right now?

Okay, well, if it can't wait.

Sorry.

He needs me.

Bye.

[whimsical music continues]

[Lily sighs]

[Kyra] Uh, 1492…

[ominous music playing]

[Kyra] …three…

Fourteen-ninety-four…

[magical whooshing]

That's the end, there's no row 1495.

The card can't be wrong, it has to be here.

[Kyra] Fourteen-ninety-five.

Do you think?

-[suspenseful music playing] -[chest clattering]

[sighs] There's nothing here.

[creaks]

This makes no sense.

Why would the index card lead us to a chest full of old clothes?

-Maybe it was a filing mistake? -That was the only reference I could find.

It's a dead end.

-[dramatic music playing] -[metal clinks]

[chest rattles]

[Darra blows]

[dramatic music continues]

The cobra.

[both chuckle]

[Darra] "Journal of Magnus Sorenson, 1919."

Who's Magnus Sorenson?

Let me guess, the who's who of magical explorers?

-This library has everything. -[chuckles]

"Sanders, Silverbug, Smith…

Sorenson."

"During the first two decades of the 20th century,

Magnus Sorenson explored the ancient cities of Southeast Asia."

"He made a fortune by looting the more valuable magical artifacts

and selling them on the black market."

"This photograph was taken in 1919,

as Magnus set off on what was to be his last expedition."

The journal was written in 1919.

What else does it say?

Uh, "Magnus died in prison after having spent his fortune

in an obsessive quest for…

a mythical temple."

Uh, how do you know it's the same temple?

[Darra] Look.

That old elf, Aroon, was telling the truth.

Does it say where the other keys are?

[Darra] My guess is it would be somewhere here.

And where exactly is here?

Siam.

Known today as Thailand.

[dramatic music plays, concludes]

[Imogen] You're painting again?

-Good morning to you too. -I warned you not to.

-Aw, are your little feelings hurt? -Didn't you understand what I said?

Remind me.

The DMI have the Bureau looking for the graffiti artist.

Oh, right, that.

[exhales] Your order is coming.

I gave you an opportunity to stop.

I'm trying to help you.

Yeah, and meanwhile, some of us have work to do.

[sighs]

[gasps]

I want a word with you.

I know who the graffiti artist is.

You wanna go back to Thailand?

-Why not? -What if the map is wrong?

There's only one way to find out.

[instrumental music playing]

[magical whooshing]

That sure beats flying. Now what? [exhales]

The journal says we need to look for a rock,

shaped like a monkey skull.

-[dramatic music playing] -[crickets chirping]

-Tayla's the artist? -I was in her studio.

And you didn't tell us?

I thought I convinced her to stop painting.

She has a studio in the wall.

You get in through a door in the mural at the end.

-Uh. So, where's the mural? -It was here.

Well, that was a waste of time.

-It is Tayla. -[Lily] Where's your proof?

Back to square one. Thanks, Imogen.

[dramatic music playing]

[grunts, sighs]

[exhales]

[mystical music playing]

[Darra] "June 13, Northern Siam,

the path to the temple has not been easy."

"From hints and clues gathered over centuries,

I've pieced it together."

"Now the search has brought me to this pestilential jungle."

"Though the cost will by high, I believe it will be worth it."

[Kyra exhales]

I guess he's talking about how he found the second key.

Time out. [pants]

A rock that looks like a monkey skull… [exhales]

…what does that even look like? [exhales]

-[dramatic music playing] -[birds chirping]

Maybe something like that.

"The monkey skull rock is a signpost."

"Now we go west."

[birds chirping]

[Darra] "From here, we must be wary."

[birds chirping]

[Kyra] What do you think he meant by, "Be wary"?

Last chance to back out.

You kidding? [chuckles]

[cutlery clattering]

[soft pop music playing]

I'm a friend of Tayla's.

She left her math assignment at school. [chuckles]

Can you tell me where she lives?

[birds chirping]

-[dog barking] -[instrumental music playing]

-Can I help you? -Uh, does Tayla Devlin live here?

And you are?

Imogen. I'm a friend of hers from school.

That'll be a first. [chuckles]

I'm Tayla's mom. She'll be back shortly.

-Come in. -I don't think so.

Nonsense.

I mean, you've come all this way, what's a few more minutes?

I'll make tea.

-[instrumental music continues] -[door opening]

[whirring]

[Darra] "This sphere cost me much to acquire…

but if the legend is true, it will lead us to the key…

and the long-awaited dream will be realized."

[insects chirping]

-Isn't the sphere supposed to glow? -Maybe we're not close enough to the key.

Or Magnus got the key and we're on a wild goose chase.

-[monkeys chattering] -[insects chirping]

"The porters have fled, the snake repels all approaches."

"It appears the key is unobtainable."

He didn't get it.

-Where did that mist come from? -I'll get rid of it.

-[suspenseful music playing] -[magical whooshing]

It isn't working.

[suspenseful music continues]

Darra?

-Darra? -[dramatic music intensifies, concludes]

-What are you doing here? -Nice to see you too.

You need to leave.

-I don't like being ignored. -Tough.

I didn't know if you wanted milk with your tea.

-Oh, hello, sweetheart. [chuckles] -Hey, Mom.

Is everything all right in here?

-She's not one of them, is she? -No. Mom, it's cool.

[chuckles] Imogen…

biscuit, they're homemade.

Darra?

[Darra] Kyra!

Kyra!

-[suspenseful music playing] -[beeps]

The key's here.

[suspenseful music playing]

[suspenseful music continues]

Darra!

[insects chirping]

[crackling]

[magical whooshing]

[suspenseful music playing]

[exhales]

So nice to finally meet a friend of Tayla's.

We just moved in from the country.

I was worried that she wouldn't make any friends at school.

She hasn't had the greatest track record in that area.

-But I'm glad to see I was wrong. -Imogen has to go, Mom.

Nonsense, she hasn't even touched her tea.

I'll leave you girls to it.

-[cutlery clattering] -Your mom's human.

-So? -So you're a halfling?

-She knows about that, right? -Course.

Then why don't you want her to know I'm an elf?

'Cause I don't wanna freak her out. I don't want her to hurt anymore.

What do you mean?

[sighs]

Look, the magical world hasn't always been kind to my mom.

My dad, he was a fairy and… not the nice type like your friend, Lily.

He ran off when I was a baby and we haven't seen him since.

Mom had to bring me up on her own.

Couldn't she just get help?

From who?

She went to his family, but they didn't wanna know.

[sighs] Look, halflings aren't exactly valued

by the magical world.

That must have been hard.

Mom had no money and no one to help her manage my magic,

which mainly meant denying it even existed.

I have to hide my magic too. [chuckles]

Only from humans. We had to hide it from everyone.

I still don't know why you keep trying to challenge the DMI.

Wouldn't it be easier just to keep a low profile?

[scoffs] Look, I love painting, I always have.

It's the only thing that keeps me going when things go bad.

-Why can't you just paint in your studio? -You don't get it.

[exhales] I bring a little bit of magic to the world.

Sure, some people are shocked by it, but others love it.

[exhales] The DMI wants to keep a wrap on magic,

yet magic is what makes the world so fascinating.

And I am not stopping it.

[Mrs. Devlin] Staying for dinner, Imogen?

It's spaghetti night.

Thanks, but, um, I really need to get home.

I'm sorry for what happened to you.

Save your pity, I don't need it.

[birds chirping]

Darra!

-Are you okay? -You can't keep a good elf down.

Is the key there?

Yeah, but it's protected by magic, just like in Bangkok.

That must be why Magnus couldn't get it.

But it let you have the key.

[suspenseful music playing]

Careful.

-[magical whooshing] -[suspenseful music continues]

[sighs in relief]

[soft music playing]

[magical whooshing]

[Professor Maxwell] Oh, good afternoon, Imogen.

I didn't expect to see you here on such a lovely day.

-It's beautiful, isn't it? -[chuckles]

[Professor Maxwell] It takes a rare talent to bring alive such a moment in time.

The power of the imagination, now that's real magic.

Can I ask you something, Professor?

[Professor Maxwell] Well, that's what I'm here for.

You've always told us that magic isn't just spells and powers.

Yes.

Well, if creating art is magic,

then why would the DMI want to stop someone doing it?

I'm guessing this is about the magical graffiti artist?

What if they're not trying to cause trouble?

What if they're just being creative?

Revealing magic to humans is forbidden.

[Imogen] But isn't that the whole point of creating art,

so that it can be seen?

Imogen, you know the DMI's duty

is to protect the magical world and all its secrets.

But if it's not causing any trouble, what's the problem?

I just don't think it's fair to stop someone from painting

when it means so much to her.

You know who it is, don't you?

Her name's Tayla.

She works at the Gangway.

And you're reluctant to report her.

[Imogen] If I do, they'll confiscate her wand.

-That's her choice then. -No, you don't understand.

-She hasn't had the same options as us. -[Professor Maxwell] Why?

Because she's a halfling.

Like you.

And you know better than anyone what that means.

[dramatic music playing]

The Bureau of Magical Things weekly meeting, take two.

Hopefully we can get further than we did this morning.

Sorry I had to bail before.

[Imogen] Where have you two been?

For a walk.

An all-day walk? Where?

Around.

Way to evade the question. You two are up to something.

Can we get back to the meeting? We need to find the graffiti artist.

-Imogen? -What?

-You have a suspect. -Really, who?

I was wrong.

-[Lily] But you said it was-- -I was wrong, okay?

[soft music playing]

So…

meeting over then?

-[siren wailing in distance] -[dramatic music playing]

[crickets chirping]

[dramatic music continues]

[Darra] Two down, one to go.

[Kyra] Does the journal say where the last key is?

[Darra] There's nothing about it in the last entry,

-just… just these random numbers. -[Kyra sighs]

What's going on with you and the keys?

-[Kyra] Beats me. -It's like they're responding to you.

I know.

I can't explain it.

I'm sorry, I know this is meant to be your thing.

Don't worry about it, I'm actually glad it worked out like this,

'cause it means we're in it together.

[exhales]

-[Mr. Mendoza] What's happened? -[beeps]

[Kazuhiro] There's been a major magical disturbance

in the jungle, north of Chiang Rai.

-Anything of interest there? -[machine buzzing]

Nothing that we know of, sir.

Do you think it's another key?

-[suspenseful music playing] -It's likely.

If they have two, they'll go after the third.

We can't let them get it, we have to move now.

On the contrary,

those keys have been hidden for centuries…

and we never even knew where to look.

So, we'll let them get it for us.

And then?

[suspenseful music fading]

[theme music playing]

[theme music concludes]
