We would have a potluck,

And after the sermon was over,
We would sit down and eat.

And chase each other
And have fun.

And you start to question
What happened.

Who did it? For what reason?

This particular sunday morning,

I missed church service,
But I went afterwards.

It's a place
Where I could go to reflect,

Gather my thoughts, pray,
And meditate on life.

I think when you get closer
To your spiritual guide,

It kind of puts things
In perspective.

You realize that everything
Is bigger than you,

And you're just a part of it.

It's kind of a humbling
Experience.

This is demery.

While I'm in prayer,
I get a call from dispatch.

A body has been found outside
A shreveport mosque.

All right, I'm on my way.

When I learn that there's a dead
Body outside of the mosque,

Wasn't sure if it was some
Sort of religious-type killing

Or some sort of attack
On that religion, islam.

Werner park is a typical inner
City shreveport neighborhood.

It's known for burglaries,
Robberies, and violent crime,

So it's not out of the ordinary

For something to happen
In werner park.

-what's happening, tom?
-hey, rod.

So, what do we got here?

It's a body found by a couple
Of the members

Of the mosque
After their services.

Detective turner can
Take you to it.

When I get to the crime scene,

I meet with detective turner.
Turner was a veteran.

He'd been around for a while, so
He was a pretty good detective.

-demery, you made it.

So, what do we got?

Well, not much.

There's no I.D. On the victim,

And the cause of death
Seems to be some time of trauma.

Okay.

We'll know more
When the coroner gets here.

Let's take a look at the body.

Demery: in this particular case,
Turner is the lead detective.

My job is to be secondary.

I back him up
And follow his lead.

At the crime scene,
The first thing that I noticed

Was the victim
Was laying facedown.

His shirt's rolled up
Towards his shoulders,

And his arms
Are above his head.

So, the body was found
In this position?

Yes. The ems,
They didn't move him.

Demery: the victim also has
Blood around his neck,

And there's grass on his back.

Look like somebody moved him.

It's pretty obvious
He had been moved.

The positioning of his shirt
And his arms above his head

Indicated that he probably
Was dragged by his feet.

The question now is whether
Or not he was killed there

Or somewhere else
And dumped there.

The other question is,

Why would somebody dump his body
By the mosque?

Examining
The crime scene closer,

We find a trail of blood
From the body

That leads around the mosque.

So, looks like
He was killed here.

At the end of the trail,

There is pooled blood
And a head scarf do-rag.

That suggests that he was killed
At that location

'cause the blood
Had exited the body

And pooled
For a period of time.

Dragged around the corner
Out of sight.

That this victim has nothing

At this point, we don't have
A lot to go on.

We have an unidentified body,
No real evidence --

No witnesses.
No one saw anything.

All we have is a dead body.

I learn that the victim was shot

But he was shot
In the back of the neck.

Was the fatal shot.

To the fingerprints,

And they identify him
As 46-year-old frederick madden.

The fact that we have
An identity now,

It dramatically changes
The investigation.

Good. Let's start there.

The first step would be to make
A death notification

And begin victimology,
Finding out who this victim is,

Where he was, and who the last
Person was seen with him.

The woman is deborah taylor,
And she is madden's girlfriend.

She last saw him when he left
The home the night prior,

But she started to worry
When he didn't return home

At all that night.

At this point, we have to inform
Deborah that mr. Madden is dead.

I have to tell you

Mr. Madden has been murdered.

Murdered?

When the police told me
That they found frederick,

I couldn't believe it.

I wanted to cry.

Deborah's clearly devastated
By hearing the news.

And I understand
What she's going through.

That someone is gone

And they're never coming back
Is pretty overwhelming.

We were just getting our life
Started together.

Frederick and I hadn't

We had just recently moved

15 minutes away.

But he obviously

We get a call from dispatch.

With some information

That they had witnessed
A homicide the night prior.

Are investigating

The murder of 46-year-old
Frederick madden.

Now we've learned there may be
A witness to the murder,

17-year-old akeem tisdam.

We bring tisdam
Inside the office.

My first impression is that
He does know

Something about this murder,

And for whatever reason,
He wants to talk.

So I want to thank you
For coming in to talk to us.

Turner's the lead investigator,
So he's gonna run the interview.

My concern is that his people

First off, I got robbed.

Tisdam claims that he had been
The victim of a random robbery.

He said he'd been robbed

Outside of a convenience store.

Afterwards, he bumped into some

As tisdam is telling his story,

Who should walk by
But frederick madden.

Tisdam tells them, this is
The guy that robbed me earlier.

Tisdam claims he refused
To retaliate,

But his friends decided
They would retaliate for him.

Tisdam watched as they
Held him at gunpoint,

Robbed him,
And shot him dead.

T shot him in the back.
Red went through his pockets.

And where exactly
Did this happen at?

Next to the mosque,

Tisdam provided
Very intimate details --

The location,
Where the victim was shot,

And the fact
That the victim was robbed.

There's no way that tisdam
Is not involved in this murder

If not completely
Responsible for it.

It's really ridiculous
To believe

That someone would be

Would retaliate on your behalf
By committing murder.

The whole story

Because he was afraid
To implicate drew.

This drew person may just be
Another name that he made up.

I'm very certain of

Is part of this murder.

Blood evidence,

Evidence of this crime.

Papers with davey's name on it.

At this point, I'm interested

And he wanted to just vent.

He comes off as very judgmental,

Listening to all this, I see
Turner is getting frustrated,

And he begins to show that.

And see what he's got to say?

Demery comes up with a plan.

"Let's go check tisdam out of
The jail, bring him over here,

And let them play
Off each other."

It's a very successful tactic

When you have suspects
Talking because eventually,

They're all gonna point
The finger at each other.

So I go to the jail,
And I pick up tisdam.

Tisdam tells me
That he first met

Andrew davey a few years ago

When he was living
On the streets.

I ain't got none left.

Tisdam said that he started
Going to davey's church,

And davey eventually
Gave him a place to stay.

Until he gets himself together.

Was in a bind, too.

According to tisdam, davey was

By opening his doors to them,
But I think davey is a predator,

And that's evident by the fact
That he was a child molester.

He's a person who obviously had
A pattern of manipulating people

With the attempted robbery.

And makes them return
To the scene of the murder.

So, they drag frederick
Madden's body

All the way behind the mosque
Where it couldn't be seen.

-[ groans ]

Come on!

They clean up shell casings
And whatever else they can find

That may implicate them

And go back to the house.

They took the firearm
Back to lily,

And lily's daughter, larika,
Decided to get rid of it.

Knowing that her mother's gun
Was used in a murder,

She smashed it into pieces
With an axe.

And threw the pieces
In the red river.

I believe that davey, morris,

And tisdam were all
At the scene of both crimes.

I believe that davey was
The trigger man

And was the person
That fired the shot

That killed frederick madden.

But there's no proof that davey
Committed this murder.

[ buzzer ]

In the end,
Akeem tisdam pled guilty

To the robbery
Of frederick madden

And was sentenced
To 10 years in prison.

Cordaro morris and larika ford

Pled guilty to accessory
After the fact.

Morris got five years, and ford
Got two years in prison.

Andrew davey pled guilty
To the attempted armed robbery

Of shane payne and tommy young

And got sentenced
To 49 1/2 years in prison.

I'm thankful that I have
A spiritual compass.

I'm thankful that my priority
Has always been to bring justice

Rather than go out and get
Somebody I think's a bad person.

And hopefully,

Frederick madden did not
Deserve this.

He lost his life so
Senselessly for a few dollars.

A good life,

And he did the best he could.
