Of detective rod demery.
First...[ gunshots, children screaming ]
...Gunshots ring out At a crowded high school,
Leaving a popular teen In critical condition.
She's literally hanging on By a thread.
You're gonna be alright.
Why would someone want to target This particular teenager?
Oh, wow.
This is potentially a gold mine For detective demery.
[ siren wailing ]
Demery: At this point, the chase is on.
If he gets away now, We can lose him forever.
Narrator: then...Mayweather: come on, bro!
...A fatal shootout and a claim
Of self-defense That just doesn't add up.
That's a hell of a lot Of shell casings.
Officers know a genuine Crime scene
From one that may be staged.
There are a lot Of red flags here.

Murder and me, we go way back.
When I was a child, Murder took my mother.
Years later, It came for my brother.
That's when I found My mission in life.
Every case I worked, I solved.
Every case I solved, I got a confession.
I'm detective rod demery.
I didn't choose murder.
Murder chose me.

Mack: it's about 8:00,[ bell rings ]
And the last bell rings
For the students to go to class
At booker t. Washington High school.
Guys, you doing alright? You doing good?
Hey, how are you?I'm fine.
Mack: officer ross, who's The school resource officer,
Is in the school When he hears something
A school resource officer Never wants to hear.

But for officer ross, this is Kind of like the unthinkable.
Go, go. Move!Call an ambulance!

And there's no sign Of a shooter anywhere.

In december 2009, Really early in the morning,
I just finished firearms Training.
[ cellphone rings ]
I got a call from dispatch.
[ cellphone beeps ]This is demery.
They told me that there was A shooting at a high school.
Not a whole lot of details, But someone had been shot.
I'm on my way.
My first thought is...[ gun cocks ]
..."Was there an active shooter? Was the person still there?"
It was a huge a concern.
If there's a potential active Shooter, all hands are on deck.
Everybody that's available's Gonna be there.
[ thunder crashes, Siren wailing ]
[ police radio chatter ]
It's a sad normalcy that school Shootings are so common now.
The place where you expect Your children to learn
And be cared for Have become dangerous.
Man: Please, tell us something now!
[ chatter continues ]
When I arrive at the scene, It's really intense.
Our kids are in there! Are they safe?
Officer: we'll get you guys Some information soon.
There are parents That come to the school.
They're looking For their children.
They want to make sure That their child is not hurt.
There's chaos.
We'll get you as much Information when we have it.
Hey, so, What's the status?
Well, we got the school On lockdown.
Lockdown is nothing more Than a containment of a scene.
No one comes in Or no one leaves.
We've determined that The shooter's not on scene.
Now you can breathe easier.
You know that there's No active shooter there.
Whoever's responsible left.
Alright, anybody hurt?
Yeah, a female student Named tracy.
She was shot About six times.
Emt's got her on the way To the hospital.
Doesn't look like She's gonna make it.
Mack: 18-year-old tracy simmons,
She's about to finish out High school
And face the world head-on.
She's bubbly.
She's always surrounded By friends.
Okay, where'd the shooting Take place?
It's down here underneath The awning there
As you go in the entrance.
Alright, thank you. Yep.
As I start to investigate The crime scene,
There's blood on the concrete On the sidewalk
And six markers Where six shell casings
Were found from a 9mm pistol.
This all The shell casings?
Yes.
The fact that the shell casings Were concentrated in one area
Suggests that this was An intended target.
There was no randomness.
There was no sense Of someone shooting
As many people as possible.
Mack: That means investigators aren't Looking for some crazy person
That's just out to cause chaos And wreak havoc at a school.
They are looking for someone That has a beef with tracy.
So, what are The students saying?
Anybody see this thing Go down?
They're inside talking to them Now, find out what they know.
Is there a school resource Officer on duty?
Officer ross, He's inside.
Alright, if anybody needs me, I'll be inside.
Yes, sir.
So, my question, though, Is "Why would someone want
To target a teenager In high school?"
How you doing?
Still a little shaken up.
It's hard to believe that I got Somebody hurt on my watch.
These school resource officers,
They have plans in place For school shootings,
But when it actually happens,
It's never quite Like you practiced.
You get a look At the shooter?
I didn't get a good look At anybody
In the parking lot, Other than this white chevy
Kind of tore through The parking lot about the time
I made it up To the victim.
Demery: it's unclear If this car is involved.
This could be someone that Actually fired the shots
Trying to flee the scene,
Or it could be somebody That was trying to get away
Because they didn't want To be hurt.
Were you able to catch The plate?
I didn't get a look At the license plate, either.
We do have video surveillance From the school
That might Have caught something.
Alright, Do me a favor.
Would you get that video Gathered up
And send it down To the station?
I'd be more than happy To take care of it.
Alright, brother.Thanks. Appreciate it.
Hey, detective. Yeah?
We have someone down in the gym We think you need to talk to.
One of the officers on the scene Has a potential witness.
Carolyn sinclair seems To be very upset,
So the officer leads me to her.

[ gunshots ][ girl screaming ]
...And screaming.Okay.
And then I saw tracy Lying there bleeding.
[ gasps ]
Did you see the shooter?
I didn't see who shot tracy.
But yesterday, there Was this guy hanging around
Right near school.Okay.
He didn't look like a student Or a teacher.
Carolyn explained that this Person looked a bit older
And didn't appear To be a parent,
Just didn't have a good Feeling about him.
Can you remember Anything else about this guy?
I saw that he was driving A white car.
I think it was a chevy.
A white chevy? Okay.
So now we have another person Mentioning a white chevy.
Hey, guys. Thank you.
Investigation's all About corroboration,
So the surveillance Becomes even more important.
Back at the station,
I start scrolling through The surveillance footage.
It doesn't take long for me To spot it.
I see the same white chevy.
It's in the same drop-off area.
The video shows the victim Pulling up,
And as she gets out Of the vehicle,
I see the person That was driving the white chevy
Exit the vehicle.
He walks up directly To the victim, firing shots.
Wow.
Video surveillance has always Been a valuable tool,
But it's always Disturbing to see
An actual shooting take place.
But on this video, I can Actually see the license plate.
That's valuable.
Officer: detective demery.Yeah?
We just received a call From the hospital.
It's the victim's family.
They're demanding to know what We're doing about the shooting.
Alright. Do me a favor.
Run this plate.

Yes, sir. Thank you.
Getting the license plate number Is golden.
I'm gonna be able to find out Who this vehicle belongs to.
When I arrive at the hospital, I meet with the trauma doctor.
Doctor: She's in surgery right now.
We're doing everything We can for her,
But it's Not looking good.
He tells me tracy has been shot Six times in the torso.
That's usually always fatal.
Mrs. Simmons, I'm detective demery.

My natural thought is, "How is this related?
Is this person Wanting to kill tracy?"
I'm not gonna go home until I figure out what's happened.
[ students screaming ]Go, go.
Move! Move.
Demery: I'm investigating the shooting Of 18-year-old tracy simmons.
Tracy was shot in front Of her high school.
We have the shooter on video, But he hasn't been identified.
I learned from tracy's mother
That there were suspicious Phone calls coming.
The question now is, "Is this The person who shot tracy?"
Demery: now, these phone calls, Do you have any idea
What that may have Been about?
I mean, does she have A boyfriend
Or something like that? No.
She doesn't have a boyfriend, At least not anymore.
She tells me that tracy Had a recent breakup.
She knew tracy was upset, But she never met the guy.
Tracy never brought him around.
All she would tell me is That his first name was tony.
She was real secretive About it.
Hmm, I wonder why.
If you have to have a secret In a relationship,
That is a red flag.
Why can't you talk about this?
Did she have someone that She would confide in, like,
Maybe a best friend Or something?
Yeah, paige, paige seawald.Okay.
If anyone knew anything, It would be paige.
Okay.
[ crying ] I can get you her number.
Thank you.
Mack: A teenage girl's not gonna tell
Mom what's going on No matter how terrible it is.
But she will confide Every deepest, darkest secret
To that girlfriend.Thank you.
So, I go to the seawald Residence.
When I meet paige, I let her know
How we really need To find out what's going on.
So, paige, I hear you may be Able to give me some information
About tracy's boyfriend.
Her parents are in the room,
So she's uncomfortable Talking about it.
Mrs. Seawald, you think I could Speak to paige alone
For a second?
Are you okay with that, Honey?
Thank you.
When talking to teenagers, Parents aren't
The best audience.
Their children feel They're judgmental,
And they're checking Everything that they say,
So it's pretty important To kind of
Get them out of the way To get a full story.
Alright, paige, look,
We really need Your help here.
Now, what can you tell me About tracy's boyfriend?
The guy's name is tony.
I don't even know His last name,
But the thing is, He's older, much older,
But that's not The issue.
He's married...With kids.
Wow.
The fact that a grown-ass man With a wife and children

But then he started To get controlling.

Nah, man. I was looking at the tv.
As I talked to lamar mayweather, I'm in disbelief.
It's hard for me to believe that There's some sort of a robbery
Or scuffle or a shootout, And he doesn't see anything.
Lamar, Help me out here.
How is it that you in there, But you didn't see the shooter?
Come on, man. It all happened so fast, okay?
My chair was Facing the tv.
As I talk to lamar, I realize That either he's emphatic
About not telling the truth,
Or he doesn't want to talk About what's going on.
The frustration is overwhelming, So I move on to the crime scene.
[ door opens ][ police radio chatter ]
[ camera shutter clicks ]
As I go inside, It's a small apartment.
That's a hell of a lot Of shell casings.
Officer: yes, sir. There was 11 of them.
[ camera shutter clicks ]Towards the front door,
I notice a .40-caliber Shell casing.
On the dining room table, I see a .40-caliber glock
And an empty magazine.
This is a lot of gunfire Coming from cook's weapon.
Self-defense, usually somebody's Reacting to a threat,
And once that threat goes away
Or you get control of the Situation, the gunfire ceases.
That amount of gunfire Just doesn't quite sit right.
Right over there is where We found the body.
Okay.
At the front door, There are signs
Where bullets have went Through the door
And high-velocity blood spatter On the door.
Detective demery discovers That there are 11 shots fired
From adrian cook's weapon
And five shots fired From randle's gun.
Demery: It still didn't make sense to me
That cook fired 11 shots And randle fired 5.
Randle was shot and killed, And cook was not injured.
The fact that there Are so many gunshots
Just doesn't make any sense That this is over a robbery.
Where was the gun found In relation to the victim?
When we first got here On the scene,
It was in the victim's hand.Mm-hmm.
I'll tell you, the funny thing About it is,
The way he was holding the gun, He just didn't seem natural.
The patrol officer explained That the firearm
Was placed in the victim's hand Kind of awkwardly,
And someone may have Placed it there.
These responding officers know A genuine crime scene
From one that may be staged.
You know what?
Let's get cook and his buddy, Lamar, down to the station.
We need to talk To them again.
Yes, sir.
My thought at that point is,
"There are a lot Of red flags here."
Thanks, guys.
These inconsistencies Are very disturbing.
It's time to move the shooter
And the witness To the police station.
I want to get an in-depth And thorough interrogation
Of the both of them.
As I'm going back to my car,
I notice a familiar face.
It's one of my confidential Informants, a c.I.
I naturally go over To talk to him.
Talking to an informant outside
Where everyone can see you Requires a lot of delicacy.
Hey, man, so, you know Anything about this?
Yeah.
You have to kind of get What you can
As quickly as you can And as quietly as you can.
The guy over there In the apartment, he's a dealer.
The guy he shot was The a customer.
No kidding.Yeah.
The significance of this Information is that
This is not a case Of an unknown intruder
Barging into this house To rob these poor victims.
What's up, homey?
The narrative now shows that Derodrick randle and adrian cook
Knew each other and that there's Something deeper
Going on with this case.
What about derodrick randle, The brother who got shot?
Oh, man, "Can't get right."
The c.I. Tells me
That "Can't" is Derodrick randle, the dead guy.
His street name is "Can't get right."
You sure those two Knew each other?
Yeah, man.
Later, demery. Alright.
Be good, boy.
This information changes The scenario completely.
Clearly, cook is lying About the intruder,
And I'm sure it's not The only thing he's lying about.
[ sirens wailing ]
[ police radio chatter ]
Demery: I'm investigating the shooting Of derodrick randle.
Randle was supposedly shot At a home invasion.
The shooter, adrian cook,
Claims to have fired At randle in self-defense.
Now I've learned that the victim
And the suspect Actually knew each other.
I'm pretty sure I'm dealing with a murder.
[ dogs barking ]
One of the most important things Of a homicide
Investigation is to make A death notification.
[ door creaking ]When I got to randle's home,
Catherine randle immediately Started to come outside.
And I informed her that her son Had been shot and killed.
I'm sorry. Oh, god.
[ crying ]
Catherine: I was devastated.
It's a mother's worst nightmare.
I wouldn't want it to happen To anybody.
Can you tell me a little bit About derodrick?
He had just recently Gotten married.
He was so excited About his new family.
Derodrick became a step-daddy Of two kids.
Derodrick was a very active Stepfather in my kid's life.
He was extremely excited about Getting his chauffeur's license
To be able to provide For his family.
Now, I understand He had a nickname.
People would call him And tease him.
"Can't get right" Is what they said.
Catherine: His friends in the street call Him "Can't get right."
I hated that name.
And that's normally given By buddies and friends
That know an individual And know him the best,
So the nickname was probably Appropriate and well-fitting.
[ crying ] You've got to find Out who did this to my boy.
I will do that.
Again, I'm really sorry.
[ sniffles ]
[ cellphone rings ]
This is demery.
Demery: As I leave the randle home,
I get notified That the autopsy has begun.
I know that I have Lamar mayweather and adrian cook
At the police station,
But it's important To go to the autopsy.
I'm on my way.
Thompson: autopsies are so Valuable for investigators
Because they're the voice Of the victim
Who cannot tell us Anymore what happened.
Demery: so, what are We looking at here?
Well, you probably Know already.
Our mr. Randle here Took a number of bullet shots.
The first thing that I learn
Is that randle Has been shot 12 times --
His buttocks, his hip, His back, his arm.
For a self-defense shooting, Someone's gonna be shot
As they're facing the person They're trying to harm.
This shows at least At some point
His back Was turned to the shooter.
These are the projectiles We pulled out of the body,
Seven of them.
There's two different Calibers.
That's right.
Four of them Are .40-caliber
And three of them Are .38-caliber.
I know that randle had A .38-caliber handgun,
And cook Had a .40-caliber handgun.
Randle has been shot With both weapons.
Thank you, doc.You're welcome.
Now I'm concerned that cook My have disarmed randle
And shot him With his own gun,
Or lamar mayweather actually had Randle's gun and shot him.
The question is why?
One of the reasons I love autopsies
Is because science doesn't lie.
This wasn't A home invasion self-defense.
This was a murder And an attempted cover-up.
It's time to get the truth Out of both men.
I begin with lamar mayweather.
Mayweather has no concern.
I'm not really sure what's Going on with mayweather.
Mayweather is not in touch With what's going on.
This is someone that is Completely undisturbed
By a murder Within feet of them
And claiming not To have seen it.
At this point, I realize that the only person
I'm gonna get a story From is adrian cook.
I need to talk to him.
The first thing I do is inform Adrian cook that I know
He and derodrick randle Know each other.
This wasn't A random home invasion.
Cook then changes his story and Tells me that he sells drugs,
And he sold drugs To randle in the past.
Cook told me that he watched
Randle go down to the car To get his wallet.
He said he felt Something spooky,
So he had a .40-caliber handgun.
He grabbed his glock And put it in his waistband
And waited for randle To return.
Cook said that he took That to mean
That randle was gonna Rob him of the marijuana.
Cook is lying. Cook is full of [bleep].
Cook told me that He ran out of bullets.
Cook said that gave him The opportunity
To draw his own gun from His waistband and shoot randle.
Now I confront him And let him know
That randle was shot With his own gun.
That is just completely Impossible to believe.
For cook to say that randle Shot himself not one, not two,
But three times with his own gun Is just complete bull [bleep].
So now I'm curious about How randle had
A gun placed in his hand.
Cook told me that He wanted it clear
That once investigators Got there,
That we knew that randle's gun Was randle's gun,
So he placed the gun In randle's hand.
At that point, I knew the story And the crime scene
Was completely Manufactured by cook.
Cook shot and killed randle And tried to cover it up.
Adrian cook can cry All he wants,
But he isn't fooling anyone.
I think cook Had convinced himself
That he was gonna be Robbed by randle,
And the fact that this was A dispute over marijuana
Means that self-defense Cannot be claimed.
I believe on the day of randle's Murder, cook and randle
Had a conversation About a drug deal.
[ cellphone rings ]
Can't get right.
Okay. Yeah, come on over.
Cook told him that He would sell him the marijuana
And directed him over To his apartment.
Oh, yes.
Come here. [ sniffs ]
Yeah, I know.Ooh, hoo-hoo.
Straight from texas, Baby.
Oh, yeah. That's what I'm talking about.
What the hell Is you doing?
Come on, man. You know I'm good for it.
You better give me My bread, homey,
Or put that back On the table.
I'll go get it.
He sent randle downstairs To get the money.
Randle went to his vehicle,
And cook armed himself And laid in wait
For randle to return.
Once randle came Inside the apartment,
Cook locked the door Behind randle.
Cook says that at some point, Randle pulled a gun.
Lamar! Wait, no!
[ both grunting ]Cook rushed randle,
Wrestled him.
At some point, Cook took a gun from randle
And shot him with that gun.
Mayweather: Come on, bro!
When he ran out of bullets, He reached in his own waistband,
Pulled out his own gun And shot him with that gun.
Oh, you thought you could Rob me, huh?
[ groans ]
I told you to chill.Shut up!
After he shot randle, He picked up the firearm
And put it back In randle's hand,
Went downstairs And called the police
And told the police that he was Being robbed of a tv.
Thompson: With our laws in louisiana,
An individual cannot Claim self-defense
When they're engaged In the transaction
Or distribution of drugs.
Adrian cook was convicted Of second-degree murder
And sentenced To life in prison.
Demery: adrian cook was a cold, Callous murderer.
It kind of blows my mind that
Cook thought that he would Be able to beat the system
And somehow walk From killing randle.
The lesson in all this is, Can't beat the system.
You can cover up, But we'll eventually find you.
Can't find what you're looking for?
