He's hurt pretty bad.

Of this accident.

First responders show up, emt.

Man: let's get him out.

I got an entrance wound.

Hey, officers.
We got a gunshot wound.

So, we get to the house,
And there's nobody there.

Turns out, nobody's
Lived there for years.

The guy's information
Was completely useless.

A rookie homicide investigator.

I had been in the homicide unit

By that time, I had a couple
Homicides already solved,

So where I was competent
And confident in doing my job,

I was still new.

We get a call

About a single-vehicle accident
Where a car ran into a tree.

One male had been shot.

Murphy was assigned lead
In this case

And responsible for the murder.

Well, you want to ride

All right. Let's go.

Age before beauty.

[ laughs ]
That's funny, demery.

[ car engine starts ]

About being a rookie

A seasoned detective.

They kind of want
To bring you along

I was happy and eager to go.

And a lot of violent crime,
So it's not a very safe place.

They pronounced him
Doa at the hospital.

So no body to examine.

The wound that the victim
Had suffered entered the back

And exited the abdomen,
Hitting many vital organs,

So what looked like
A vehicle accident is,

In fact, a homicide.

Let's take a look
At this car, demery.

When we get to the crime scene,

I notice a vehicle that looks
Like it's came off the road

A way onto the grass
And into a tree.

The area is really dark.

There's very little
Movement around,

So the crime scene
Is not really noteworthy.

Demery:
Hey, look at this.

But as we begin
To examine the car...

[ grunts ]
Look what I found.

...We notice there's a wallet.

And it contains two id cards.

This the guy

Yeah, that's him.

The victim is
34-year-old felix faulk,

A dispatcher for

Bryan: felix was
My oldest brother.

He had a really big heart,
Loved to help people.

That was his nature.

That's what he was there to do.

[ breathes deeply ]

Now, he works for dispatch,
So he knows this is a bad area.

I wonder what he's doing

But when we knock,
There's no answer.

And go up to the back door...

...They realize that the door is

Not only unlocked
But slightly ajar.

Demery: since the door is ajar,

There may be something
Going on in this house.

There may be another victim,
May be a suspect,

So we absolutely
Have to clear the house.

We ran them, matched them

To investigate a murder.

The fact that

Where it was means the shooter
Was inside the vehicle

When he fired the shot.

I think our best lead is

And that that's the only

We were supposed to meet up

Shortly after larry leaves
The office,

He says that he sees sherman
On a street corner.

Our officers go out and get him.

When sherman comes in,
He's really nervous and confused

When we went to faulk's house,

Listening to sherman's story,

I don't see anything
That really alarms me.

He didn't conceal anything.

And he legitimately looked
Like he was confused

When we brought him in,
So ultimately we have to

To the shooting,

It looks like both
Our main suspects

Just canceled each other out.

It's not that unusual
In a homicide investigation,

But we had no evidence

In the homicide at that point.

That's very odd in 2002

And monique tells her mom

The phone is really important.

It's a lot different
Than him saying

Someone gave him the phone.

That would add another layer,

If the man was dead or not,

Felix tries to drive away,
But as he bleeds out,

He loses consciousness.

He crashes into a tree.

Jenkins is convicted
Of second-degree murder.

He's sentenced to life in prison

Without the possibility
Or benefit of parole.

With murder.

With theft of a cellphone,

A one-year suspended sentence.

The day, got the satisfaction

Of getting someone who
Murdered someone off the street.

And I think there's
A unique tragedy in the fact

That faulk wanted
To help people, save lives,

And the fact that he was

And I want him to be remembered
As a person that enjoyed life

And enjoyed helping people.
