And sees a white male Slumped over.

Hey, we got a accident out here. He's hurt pretty bad.

Mr. Williams thinks this is Probably a result

Of this accident.

First responders show up, emt.

Man: let's get him out.

I got an entrance wound.

Hey, officers. We got a gunshot wound.

So, we get to the house, And there's nobody there.

Turns out, nobody's Lived there for years.

The guy's information Was completely useless.

Uh-huh.

In 2002, I was A rookie homicide investigator.

I had been in the homicide unit For maybe a year.

By that time, I had a couple Homicides already solved,

So where I was competent And confident in doing my job,

I was still new.

Hey, let me ask you.

You got any cis you trust Over on the west side?

Nah, I ain't worked on That side of town in a while.

Got it.

Chad murphy was A detective who had been

In homicide several years Before I got there.

He was from louisiana, Born and bred,

And it smelled Like gasoline in his office.

He worked on lawn mower motors At times in his office.

This is homicide.

While we're in the office, We get a call

About a single-vehicle accident Where a car ran into a tree.

Yeah.

One male had been shot.

Murphy was assigned lead In this case

And responsible for the murder.

Well, you want to ride Out there with me?

Yeah, damn right.

All right. Let's go.

Age before beauty.

[ laughs ] That's funny, demery.

[ car engine starts ]

That's one of the good things About being a rookie

And you have A seasoned detective.

They kind of want To bring you along

And either teach you Something or show off.

Either way, it's beneficial.

I was happy and eager to go.

Said the shooting happened In allendale.

You been out there before?

A couple times already.All right.

In allendale, there's a lot Of prostitution, drug use,

And a lot of violent crime, So it's not a very safe place.

Well, we've got An unidentified male,

Looks to be in his mid-30s,

Appears to have A single gunshot wound.

They pronounced him Doa at the hospital.

All right. So no body to examine.

The wound that the victim Had suffered entered the back

And exited the abdomen, Hitting many vital organs,

So what looked like A vehicle accident is,

In fact, a homicide.

Let's take a look At this car, demery.

When we get to the crime scene,

I notice a vehicle that looks Like it's came off the road

A way onto the grass And into a tree.

The area is really dark.

There's very little Movement around,

So the crime scene Is not really noteworthy.

Demery: Hey, look at this.

But as we begin To examine the car...

[ grunts ] Look what I found.

...We notice there's a wallet.

And it contains two id cards.

This the guy You guys found?

Yeah, that's him.

All right.

The victim is 34-year-old felix faulk,

A dispatcher for The shreveport fire department.

Bryan: felix was My oldest brother.

He had a really big heart, Loved to help people.

That was his nature.

That's what he was there to do.

[ breathes deeply ]

Now, he works for dispatch, So he knows this is a bad area.

I wonder what he's doing Out here.

Is any money In that wallet?

[ rustling ]

Yeah, $60.

The fact that the money's In the wallet

Means it's most Likely not a robbery

Unless the robbers missed it

Or they were rushing Or inexperienced.

So this is a rough start To an investigation.

But when we knock, There's no answer.

And go up to the back door...

...They realize that the door is

Not only unlocked But slightly ajar.

Demery: since the door is ajar,

There may be something Going on in this house.

There may be another victim, May be a suspect,

So we absolutely Have to clear the house.

We clear it room by room.

And there was no one there.

There's no evidence Of a struggle,

Foul play, violence, or anything That occurred inside the house.

There's nothing to go by.

I brief murphy on what We found out about faulk

And his personal life and tell Murphy that faulk is openly gay.

Murphy: well, now, That's very interesting.

Why is that?

Well, csi found Some fingerprints

On the inside of the passenger Window of felix faulk's car.

We ran them, matched them To a guy named eric sherman.

Now, eric is a known Prostitute in allendale.

So I think our vic was In allendale

Looking for A little action.

The fact that sherman has been Identified as a prostitute,

Murphy grabs a hold of that And starts to theorize

That faulk was cruising For prostitutes.

The problem with that way Of thinking is you start

To go off into tunnel vision,

And the only thing You can come up with

Is something that makes That fit your theories,

And that's a very dangerous way To investigate a murder.

Csi find anything else Inside the car?

Yeah, 9-millimeter casing Under the front seat.

The fact that The shell casing was found

Where it was means the shooter Was inside the vehicle

When he fired the shot.

I think our best lead is Felix faulk's romantic life.

Why don't you go to all The gay bars downtown,

See if anybody Knows that eric sherman?

Listen, a guy named larry white Stopped by a few minutes ago

Claiming to be a friend Of the victim.

Says he knows something About the murder.

Just as I get there, Murphy is gonna

Interrogate or question larry, And I'm gonna watch

Just so I can see What's happening

And kind of get a feel For what's going on.

So, what is it you wanted To tell us?

Well, felix and I were supposed To get together

The night he got shot.

He was riding around, Talking to me on his phone

When he stopped To pick up this guy

That we both kind of know.

Larry said faulk picked up Someone by the name of ez,

And that that's the only Identification or name he had.

White says he never heard From faulk after that.

We were supposed to meet up Around 11:30,

But felix never showed up.

I think This ez guy done it.

Whoa. Hold on a second, now.

You know what this ez fella Looks like?

Yeah. Yeah, I do.

So, now murphy is wondering If ez could be eric sherman,

So he shows larry A picture of eric sherman.

He was the guy that got In the car with felix.

This just got Really interesting.

It's early 2002, and I'm working The murder of felix faulk.

He was found shot dead In his car.

Fingerprints found in the car

Matched to a known prostitute In the area named eric sherman.

And now a friend of faulk's, Larry white,

Has identified the last person To be with felix alive

As eric sherman.

So, this eric sherman -- You know him as ez?

Yeah, and he was with felix Right before he died,

So I figured he must have Something to do with it.

I could help y'all find him.

Larry has been very helpful In wanting to catch sherman.

I'm a little concerned About that.

Shortly after larry leaves The office,

He says that he sees sherman On a street corner.

Our officers go out and get him.

What's this all about?

When sherman comes in, He's really nervous and confused

About why we want To talk to him.

Mr. Sherman, we understand That you were with felix faulk

Shortly before he was killed.

Yeah, I heard he got Shot or something.

That's awful, and yeah, I admit, I was with felix.

He came by And picked me up.

Sherman says that he was hungry.

Faulk took him To church's chicken.

Before we got food, He had to make

A quick stop at his house 'cause he forgot his wallet.

I'm just gonna be A second, okay?

Oh, come on, man.

Relax. I'll hurry, I promise.

When we went to faulk's house,

We noticed that The back door was ajar.

So probably in that rush And in that haste,

Faulk left the door open.

So, before he took you home,

You didn't stop anywhere else, Talk to anyone?

No, ididn't.

Felix was on his cellphone Talking with this guy we know.

Who was that?

Larry white.

Sherman confirms larry's story.

He says that faulk was On the phone

And talking to larry about Meeting in about a half hour.

Larry's the guy you all Should be talking to.

He was supposed to see felix Before he got killed.

Well, that's strange 'cause

Larry was telling us To look at you.

What? He's lying.

Listening to sherman's story,

I don't see anything That really alarms me.

He didn't conceal anything.

And he legitimately looked Like he was confused

When we brought him in, So ultimately we have to

Take what larry tells us With a grain of salt.

And with larry white's Whereabouts

Accounted for just prior To the shooting,

It looks like both Our main suspects

Just canceled each other out.

When you got people Pointing fingers at each other,

It's not that unusual In a homicide investigation,

But we had no evidence That either one

Were actually involved In the homicide at that point.

Mr. Sherman, I got good news And bad news for you.

Now, the good news is, At this time,

We are not gonna charge you With the murder of felix faulk.

After my daughter, monique, Talked to these friends of hers,

I was still a little pissed that Somebody had called the house

That damn late, So I called their parents.

Ms. Gulley stated She hit star-69.

And she realizes it's A cellphone,

So she says something To her daughter, monique.

That's very odd in 2002 For monique's friends

To have cellphones, And monique tells her mom

That otis said He found the phone.

Is your daughter here? We'd like to speak to her.

Monique!

The fact that otis said hefound The phone is really important.

It's a lot different Than him saying

Someone gave him the phone.

That would add another layer, Another suspect.

We need to know The conversation details

Between her, alex, and otis.

I don't know anything About that.

Monique said he didn't mention Anything about a homicide,

A shooting, a robbery, How he had gotten the phone

Other than he found it.

Did he say if he was With anyone else?

They said they were with a boy Named kenny wayne robertson

Earlier that night.

This information was consistent With the physical evidence,

The 9-millimeter shell casing

Located under the passenger seat Of felix faulk's vehicle.

Everything that kenny wayne Told us matches

The crime scene to a t -- Where the victim was shot,

The fact that they were Not able to get any money

And there was Still money on him.

So these two guys -- You know their real names?

So we are pretty sure That there's somebody upstairs.

To cut to the chase But still have the trust

Of the person That he's talking to.

He was able to do this With otis jenkins.

Demery gets otis to tell him There is no t.J. And marquis,

That him and alex were the ones Who were hanging out that night.

Demery: jenkins tells me That when he saw the vehicle,

They just surmised That he had some money handy.

Jenkins says he didn't know If the man was dead or not,

But he figured Since he'd shot him,

He'd take his cellphone.

Jenkins said he threw The gun somewhere,

Didn't know Where he threw it,

And he began to use The cellphone.

But I don't think jenkins Is telling me the whole truth.

What likely happened is that After felix faulk

Drops his friend, Eric sherman, off,

He was heading to allendale To meet larry white.

On the way, he saw these young Men on the side of the road.

I think felix was gonna Give a couple guys

A ride that was walking.

That was his nature, To help someone.

And I feel that these guys Thought that they

Had a rich white guy, And they wanted to rob him.

Didn't look through Felix's wallet.

He grabbed the first thing He saw of value,

And that was his cellphone.

2002 -- a cellphone is valuable, Especially for a teenager.

[ groaning ]

[ tires squealing ]

Felix tries to drive away, But as he bleeds out,

He loses consciousness.

[ glass shatters ]

He crashes into a tree.

[ car horn blaring ]

After getting the confession...[ camera shutter clicks ]

Jenkins is convicted Of second-degree murder.

He's sentenced to life in prison

Without the possibility Or benefit of parole.

[ camera shutter snaps ]

Big al was not charged With murder.

He was charged With theft of a cellphone,

Where he received A one-year suspended sentence.

I think we all, at the end of The day, got the satisfaction

Of getting someone who Murdered someone off the street.

And I think there's A unique tragedy in the fact

That faulk wanted To help people, save lives,

And the fact that he was Killed while doing that

Is a total disregard For human life.

I haven't forgotten felix jr., And I never will.

And I want him to be remembered As a person that enjoyed life

And enjoyed helping people.

That was his life. That's what he did.
