This is a person
Lying in the ditch,

Covered in blood.

I would go to the gym.

And throughout
My military training

And police training,
There was always this quote.

So, it's sort of a motivator

And you realize that

One of the biggest requirements
When you're on call,

No matter where you were,
You had your pager.

So I went over to the phone.[ telephone beeping ]

And called into headquarters.

I'm on my way.

The dispatcher explained to me

That there was a shooting
At sunset acres.

It's a neighborhood that
Has quite a bit of crime.

So getting a call
Or a shooting call there

Was pretty commonplace.

What's happenin',

Hey, man, how you doing?
So what are we looking at?

We got a caucasian
Male victim.

20s, maybe 30s.

Single gunshot wound
To the face.

The vic is

Let's take a look.

Demery: the victim had been
Transported to the hospital.

So the fact that
There's no body there

And you have no idea
What this person looks like

Nor how they were positioned --

That makes it
A little more difficult.

As I start to inspect
The crime scene,

I see a puddle of blood.

It's not huge,

But there's a significant
Amount of blood there.

I go back to the crime scene.

Once I get back there,

I'm not really sure
What I'm gonna do.

He never came home.
Uh, he was 29.

I see my sergeant
Talking to a man,

And the man is kind of irate.

We need to know
What's going on.

Just tell us anything.

Please, we've heard
A man's been shot.

What's happening, sarge?

I think these folks know
Who our victim is.

The man identified himself
As ronald hayes.

His mother was the lady who
Was standing next to him.

They told me that her son,
His brother,

Should've been home hours ago,

And they were really,
Really afraid that

He was the person that
Had been hurt here.

The officers look,
And they don't see anybody.

So there's no report written,

Even though the timeframe

Is a few minutes after

Both sides of the radio traffic,

Started to piece together

That maybe this incident was
Connected to the shooting.

I've probably met

In my police career.

How were they acting?
I mean, did you hear anything?

Mike looked like
He was almost crying,

But pooh was the one

Something to him.

Then he says,

And gave a description.

So I went to michael's house.

While doing criminal activities.

That pooh had a gun

And that he and pooh began
To walk to michael's house.

Michael said that
As they walked,

They noticed the guy
Walking behind him.

Michael explained that he just
Followed his instructions

Because he didn't know
What was gonna happen.

He was afraid.

He told detective demery
That he did as he was told.

He turned left
And didn't look back.

But when he turned,

He heard pooh yelling
At this white man,

"Gimme what you got".

Michael explained that
After the gun shot,

He turned around,

And he saw pooh removing
Something from bryan,

But he didn't know what it was.

Michael says that
The two of them ran

Over where
Miss smith's home was.

So michael's story is consistent

With ruby smith
And her daughter.

After listening to the story,

I'm very comfortable
And confident

With what michael's telling me.

The one thing he couldn't recall

Was pooh's real name.
