A one-vehicle accident,

They think that it was
Possibly an intoxicated driver

Or that maybe there
Was another vehicle

That was involved
That fled the scene.

Holmes: they find this guy
And he's slumped over.

There's blood inside
Of the car, too --

Lots of blood.

Jim:
What have you got?

He's got a gunshot wound.

They try to save his life.

Oh-seven, I need a 47
And a first responder.

This is demery.

I was in a deep sleep
When they called me

And I was informed that
There was a car accident

On hollywood avenue
In shreveport.

And the victim was being
Transported to the hospital.

The fact that I was called out

Made me believe that
This was a suspicious incident

And not just a traffic accident.

I'm getting dressed now.

Late-night calls
Or early-morning calls

As a homicide detective
Are just a part of life.

Doesn't matter if you're asleep

Or watching a movie
Or taking a shower,

The phone's gonna ring,

And you kind of prepare yourself
For it to happen at any time.

But they always come at
The most inopportune times.

When I get to the scene
It's early morning,

Still dark.

The graveyard-shift
Patrol officers were out.

-how you doing, jim?

Doing better than
The driver of that car.

There's a vehicle that's
Crashed into a utility pole.

You know what happened?

Well, we thought it was just
A standard traffic accident.

We got to investigate it,

Found the guy had been
Shot on the right side.

He said it appeared to be
A lateral gunshot wound,

And those are probably
The most devastating

Because they can go
Completely across the body

And the likelihood
Of a vital organ

Being struck
Is pretty high.

We have his I.D.

Inside the vehicle
Was a driver's license

Of a male, black, 23 years old,
Frederick henderson.

The vehicle was registered
To a pamela ellis

Of bossier city,
Frederick's mother.

The doe's
At the hospital.

I haven't talked to him yet.
This kid gonna make it?

It didn't look good,
But we're not sure.

That's interesting.

There was a considerable
Amount of foliage -- shrubbery.

It kind of indicated
That the vehicle

Had been somewhere
Out of the city limits

Or somewhere unpopulated.

It was fresh, it was new,
So that was noteworthy.

I immediately noticed that
There were no skid marks,

So the vehicle went
Full speed into the pole.

This window been
Down the whole time?

Yes, sir.

The passenger-side window of
The vehicle was rolled down,

And that created more questions
Than answers.

Had the window been up,

The gunshot would've
Went through the window.

The fact that
The window was down

Made it difficult to determine

Whether the suspect was inside
Or outside the vehicle.

Inside the vehicle,
There was some

High-velocity blood spatter.

That showed that there was
Significant blood loss.

I wasn't sure if that person
Would survive that gunshot.

How was the body
Positioned?

Across the armrest.

And the pants were
Undone and down.

I'm thinking the victim
May have been robbed.

Some people who rob
Require the victim to disrobe.

That's a delay tactic for
That person to contact police

So they don't leave immediately.

Also,
He was wearing panties.

The victim had on
Women's undergarments.

So that suggested
That maybe this person

Was a cross-dresser or had
An alternative lifestyle.

This where
The I.D. Was found?

The fact that
The victim may have lived

An alternative lifestyle,
There's not any

Draw at that point,

But it's definitely
Something that adds

But that takes forever
Because there are

A bunch that need
To be analyzed.

The other is we get permission
To get into the phone.

For any evidence
That may be on it.

Kind of humanizes it
A little bit more.

When you get too generic
About certain aspects

Of a homicide investigation,

You kind of lose
That human connection.

After I noticed
The clothing of the victim,

I realized that a few days prior
There was a murder similar.

There was a male, black,
That was a cross-dresser

That was killed.

Then I thought about
Just prior to that,

There was another victim
That was killed

That lived an alternative
Homosexual lifestyle.

So, at this point,
I'm thinking that

It's a serial-type killer.

Reporter: but it's very
Important to note

Detectives have not
Made any connection

Between the two cases

So at this point, it could be
Just a strange coincidence.

This being a serial murder

Or someone killing the same
Type of people is very high,

Demery: I responded to a call
Of a vehicle accident.

Turned out that the victim
Was actually shot to death.

The victim lived
An alternative lifestyle.

I learned that there
Were two previous murders

That matched this murder.

Now I'm maybe looking
For a serial killer.

As I looked into
The previous murders,

The first that I read
About is jock mckinney.

50-year-old male, black,
Cross-dresser, and openly gay.

What's interesting about him

Is that, you know,
He's a cross-dresser,

But he dresses more as a woman
Than he does as a man.

People knew him as valerie.

Rudell: mckinney was walking
Home from the store

In the mooretown area.

Sometime during that walk home,
He was shot.

A passerby went to check on him
And found him bleeding.

She called 911
And officers responded.

Next, I read the report
On terry golston.

Golston was a 46-year-old male,
Black,

Openly gay,
And cross dressed.

Holmes: everybody likes terry.
He's everybody's friend.

A lot of the cross-dressers
Hang out together in one area.

Well, hey, ms. Terry.

Give me some loving.

And he's known by a lot
Of people across the area.

Golston was on the street
And what was reported as

And investigated as a robbery.

Golston was found
Laying in the street

Bleeding with gunshot wounds.

He was transported
To the hospital

Where he later died.

The three victims,

I realized that there's
No possible way

This is just a coincidence.

With all three victims,

There's a pattern
Or a common thread,

And that is
They're cross-dressers.

The other point is, is they are
All from the same part of town,

About a mile and a half,
Two miles

From where my victim
Henderson was found.

And what was he like?

Well...

I had five kids -- four girls,

The only son that I had.

He was protective of his family.

Fred thought he was
The man of the house,

And he always
Thought he could just

Tell everybody what to do.

Fred was the glue that
Kept the family together.

He had a lot of friends.

People always in and out

He was a very outgoing

Knew his lifestyle
And accepted his lifestyle.

So fred came out on
His junior-high year.

And I just told fred,
"You my son

And I'ma love you regardless."

I feel like that was a big
Burden that was off of him.

He was proud of what he was,
And I was proud of him, too.

Frederick owned
His homosexuality.

He would wear dresses,
He would wear purses.

He was just who he was.

Did he have beef
With anyone?

Or can you think of anyone

Who might've wanted
To do him some harm?

Well, there's one thing
I can think of.

A couple months before,
Fred and a young man

Had an altercation,
A fight.

Ow!

Fred came home with
Blood all over him.

He had pulled fred's earring
Out of his ear,

And his ear was split.

Who that person was?

On the fight or the altercation

Was ripped from his ear,

One of the crime-scene techs
Has possession of the phone,

So I need to call that
Crime-scene investigator

And meet them to get the phone.

To duck into the morgue.

With the medical examiner

He's uncovered anything

To catching frederick's killer.

Matches the story

I realize that he knew exactly
What I was talking about.

Shot the victim.

Friend shoot him?

The person I was looking for.

Where the weapon was,

It would solidify his story

And corroborate everything
He said with physical evidence.

Now let's see
About that gun.

Whitaker tells me
That the firearm is

Right next door at
An abandoned house.

We're just feet away from it.

I have
A crime-scene investigator

With a video camera documenting
The recovery of the weapon.

It's a 9-millimeter
Semiautomatic pistol.

I know from the autopsy
That henderson was shot

With a 9-millimeter pistol.

So this is most likely the
Weapon that killed henderson.

Okay, breonne,
You have the clothes

You were wearing
Last night?

-yes, sir.
-where are they?

-my room.
-okay, let's go inside

And get them, and then we can
Talk about what happened.

The next thing I want is
Whitaker's clothing collected

For any evidence
That may be on it.

Maybe blood spatter
Or forensic evidence

That he had contact
With henderson.

I wanted him to
Be honest with me

And tell me exactly what
Happened and what was going on.

Breonne said that he had been
Talking to fred through facebook

And fred picked him up
Sometime that night.

It says something about a person

That's willing to tell you
That they [bleep] Shot somebody

But they're scared to tell you
They had a sexual relationship

With somebody
Of the same sex.

At one point in
Whitaker's story,

He said that he feared henderson

Because henderson told him that
He was gonna have him sexually.

Whitaker said that
Because he felt

Like he was gonna be
Sexually assaulted by henderson,

He shot him.

At this point, I knew
That whitaker's story

Was completely illogical
Because I knew

He had actually been the person

Who physically
Beat henderson up,

So the fact that he was saying
That he was afraid of henderson

Because he feared some
Sort of sexual assault

Just didn't make any sense.

Towards the end
Of the interview,

He told me he did, in fact,

Have a sexual relationship
With henderson.

According to breonne,
It was a relationship

Where breonne would allow fred
To perform oral sex on him.

Demery: he told me they had sex
In a wooded area

About a couple of miles
From the crime scene.

It was off-road,
And that corroborated the fact

That the foliage
And the shrubbery in the car

Was consistent with when
The victim's body was found.

Henderson: come on,
Take off your clothes.

He told us that henderson
Kept trying to get him

To have sex with him.

They tried to have intercourse
But was not able to.

At that point, he was taking
Him back towards his house.

Come on, let's go to
The park down the street.

Breonne's claim is
Fred is being very adamant

That breonne shouldn't leave.

Come on, we can go get a drink
And have some more fun.

Come on.
-no.

And when fred grabs
Breonne's shirt...

No, don't go.
Come back.

-hey, get off me.
-come back.

...He thought that fred was
Going to do something to him.

[ gasps ]

He pulled a firearm,
Pointed it at henderson,

And he shot him.

Shortly after the shooting,

Henderson involuntarily drove
Off and lost consciousness.

[ glass shatters ]

[ sirens wailing ]

Whitaker went home,

Put the gun in a place
He thought was safe,

Got in bed,

And went to sleep.

And now I know some
Of the statements

That he gives me
Are not completely truthful,

That he may be
Making some parts up,

But the long and short of it was

Is that he told me
That he shot henderson.

I drove him back to
The police station.

Now I want to find out what
I can about the other cases.

I had a pretty good rapport
With whitaker at this point

And I'm trying to get and gather
All information I can from him

Before he decides that
He wants to shut down

And doesn't want to talk
Or cooperate anymore.

Demery: so, I'm investigating
Some other shootings

That just happened in the area.

Somebody named golston
And mckinney.

What can you tell me
About that?

I had heard about them,
But I don't know too much.

He told me he was aware

Of the killing of golston...

...But that he heard the gunshot
Where mckinney was shot.

So you heard
The gunshot?

Yeah, my baby mama live over
Where he got killed, so.

He gave me some specific details

Of where he was shot
And how he was dressed.

I figured
He had to have known

Or was there when it happened.

Whitaker was
The common denominator

In all those murders.

So at that point,
I was pretty certain

That he was responsible for
The other two homicides.

I didn't have my gun on me,
But if I had,

I would have taken
That neighbor dog out.

You would have
Shot the dog?

Hey, guys, you know,
You're gonna need

To talk to whitaker
'cause, uh...

'cause I'm pretty certain
He's the one

Who killed henderson
And mckinney.

We'll look into it.

Okay.

When I gave up the information,
My hope was

The detectives were gonna
Draw the same conclusion

And figure out a way to
Make those other two cases

Work with whitaker.

I don't know that they
Acted on the information

But to this day,
The murders of terry golston

And jock mckinney are still
Unsolved, open cases.

Whitaker may have gotten
Away with the murders

Of terry golston
And jock mckinney,

But when it came to my case,

The murder of
Frederick henderson,

Justice was served.

Rodgers: breonne was convicted
Of 2nd-degree murder,

And he was sentenced to
The mandatory life sentence.

Nothing fred did to deserve
To get killed --

Nothing.

Was he perfect?

No, but he was my baby.

He wasn't out killing.
He wasn't out robbing.

He was out having a good time
For his age, 23 years old.

And for you to take
An innocent life

And you destroy it,
It's hard.

Demery:
I thought about this case,

And I don't know that I ever
Figured out the reason why

That someone like breonne
Could have a sexual relationship

With someone
That he truly desires

But at the same time
Truly despises.

I think he was afraid

Of what people would have
Thought of him.

And I think he went to the point

Where he would kill him so
That he couldn't tell anybody.

I really think that
He had a problem

With his own sexuality.

He would give in
To his temptation

And within himself
Feel so guilty about it

That he took it out on henderson
And made him a victim.

The fact is that
The murders didn't start

Until whitaker got
Released from jail,

And they ended when
He went to jail.

So it's pretty clear that
Breonne was on a path to

Kill men that lived
That alternative lifestyle.

And I'm just thankful that
I was able to stop him.
