It's the middle of the afternoon
On a wednesday in shreveport

Has just finished eating lunch

And he sees two guys
Walk by wearing hoods

And he notices they go
Into the tire shop next door.

[ shouting nearby ]

[ two gunshots ]

He immediately ducks down

And he stays
For just a few minutes.

Without hearing any other
Sounds, he looks up.

[ eerie music plays ]

He sees those same two guys
He saw walk in, run out,

And they're shovin' guns
Into their waistband.

[ foreboding music climbs ]

Sam thinkin' something
Terrible must've happened,

Walks to the tire shop.

[ bell chimes ]

[ suspenseful music plays ]

Hey, I-is everything
All right?

[muffled]
Man: stay with us. Come on.

Demery:
For me, as a kid,

Role models were hard
To come by.

Never knew my father.

Never got the chance
To know my mother.

But my grandfather, he was
The one I looked up to.

He was a man's man, a war vet,

A straight shooter
With a razor-sharp mind.

But as smart as he was,

My granddad never got the chance
To go to college.

I always felt I owed it to him
To take that next step,

Get that degree,

Even if it meant puttin'
My career in homicide on hold.

So, that's exactly what I did.

Hey, bobby.
What's going on?

At the time,
I was going to school

And I had to leave homicide

Because I'm not
A very good multitasker.

So, I needed something
That would give me

That sense of work
And responsibility,

But not demand all my time.
[ring]

This is demery.

I chose robbery because
I could do all the work

Without being too overwhelmed.

Ah! I know where it is.

Coming out of class,
And I get a call from dispatch

And they explain
That there's a robbery

And a shooting at moham's tire.

Okay.
I'm on my way.

I didn't think
There was a death involved

Because they would've
Called homicide

And so my immediate thought
Was that there was a robbery,

Someone got shot
And they're okay.

This tire shop is one of those
Neighborhood tire-shop places,

Not a big franchise.

-hi, detective.
-what's going on, man?

Yeah, we got
A shooting victim,

-okay.
-77-year-old charlie lewis.

The responding
Patrol officers told me

That two young men came in
And one of the suspects

Shot mr. Lewis in the back
Three or four times.

Obviously happened in the
Middle of the robbery.

Um, he's in pretty
Bad condition.

Good news is,
We got a lot of witnesses,

So I guess we want to go ahead
And talk to the owner first.

Demery:
The owner of the tire shop
Is hoyle moham.

It's kind of a family shop.

They've been in the community,
Around, for a long time.

Moham's is one of those
Kind of places

That kind of sustains
The neighborhood.

They're kind of a staple
In the community, you know,

Kind of a guy that can look
At your car, you know,

Or a guy that can fix your flats
Or something along those lines.

How you doing,
Mr. Moham?

Good afternoon,
Detective.

Can you tell me
About what happened?

I was up front here,
Working,

And two young brothers
Walked in with guns.

Get on the ground!
Down, down, down, down!

Get on the ground, man!

Then they headed to the
Back, where the guys

Were playing dominoes.
-okay.

I ran back there and charlie
Was laying, bleeding.

He's a good dude.

He's a father.
He's a grandfather.

Mr. Lewis was described
As a very nice,

Caring individual

Who loved to engage
In conversation.

He was very community-
And neighborhood-oriented,

Just a good individual.

He was humble.
He was quiet.

He was respected
In the neighborhood

And he enjoyed going up
To the tire shop,

Hanging out with friends,
And playing dominoes.

Mr. Lewis was a staple
At that shop.

He was there all the time

And everybody that came
Through knew who he was.

Most of the people
That are of that age

Or at that stage in their life
Are usually not in an area

Where there wouldbe danger

And if, for whatever
Reason they were,

Most people who commit crimes

Wouldn't prey on
Someone that age.

It's just not common.
It takes a special type person

To want to wound, injure,
Or shoot someone that age.

So, did you see
What happened back there?

No.

Charlie was already shot
By the time I got there.

After speaking to the owner
Of the tire shop, I realized

I needed to talk to somebody
That was actually back there

Where they were
Playing dominoes.

So one of the officers
Brought me another witness.

This is troy. He was
In the back, playing dominoes.

-how you doing, troy?
-very good.

How are you doing, sir?

So, troy, you play
Dominoes here often?

As much as I can, yes, sir.

-I got you.
-oh, you go--

Let's go! Let's go!

[ voices overlapping ]

-I'm just sayin'.
-that's comin' home.

Crow:
Most of the stores
In the area,

They had either a deck of cards
Or a dominoes set

And it's something that,
You know, they could sit there.

They could bet money,
If they wanted to bet money;

Or they could just play.
-pay the piper!

The entire shop was
A hangout spot, you know.

Good, clean fun.

We was like family.

Can you tell me
What happened here?

We were all playing dominoes,
Except for charlie.

He was waitin' on us to finish
So he can jump in the game.

[ music plays ]

Put the money
On the table.

[ voices overlapping ]

Next thing you know, we got
Two guys coming in with guns.

When they first came in,

I actually thought that
The two young men was playing,

Playing a joke.

But when I heard
The pistols cock,

I knew they wasn't playing any.

You heard me.
I said put the...

What's the problem?
Go!

-money on the table, now.
-get down!

Money on the table, now!

A good look at them?

I-I was so scared.

I was afraid to look up at them,
Knowing that they had pistols,

And if I look up at them,

Then it was quiet,
Until I heard one

Of the other gentlemen
Say that they was gone.

That's when everybody else
Got up off the floor.

Demery:
Everybody, that is,
Except charlie lewis.

Mr. Lewis is laying there,
Laying a puddle of blood,

And it looked as though he was
Bleeding from the mouth.

-charlie, charlie.
-charlie. Stay with us, charlie.

Come on, big guy.

Come on, big guy.
-charlie, come on, now.

Hey, question.
So,

Did we ever figure out
Exactly how much money

These guys had total,
Laid out on the table?

Yes, the witness
Was saying among them

They had about 38 bucks.

This domino game
Was all the old guys

That knew each other
Just playing dominoes.

But somewhere
In the neighborhood,

Word had gotten out
That hundreds of dollars

Were changing hands
In these domino games

And they were old guys,
Somewhat easy targets.

Nothing could've been
Further from the truth.

When all was said and done
And talking with the people

That was actually there
And how much money

Was actually taken from them,
They got a total of $38.

$38 and one man shot.

The motive of the suspects
Is clear in this case:

The suspects believed
That a lot of money

Would be exchanged at this game.

They were lookin'
For a big hit.

But in reality,
Not a whole lot of money

Is actually being
Exchanged here.

At that point, I realized
That I'm dealing with somebody

That's either really young
Or really inexperienced.

Committing a crime based on
A belief or a thought or a rumor

Makes no sense to me.
None of it.

This is where
The body was found.

Okay.

[ suspenseful music plays ]

Strange to find
A knife here.

Yeah, it was found right
There, beside the body.

The pocketknife
Is close to the body

And in the blood.

So it makes it difficult
To determine

Whether or not
The knife was used.

Crow:
It may have just fallen out
Of someone's pocket.

You really don't know,
But it's out of place.

Was the victim stabbed?

As far as we know,
Just gunshot wounds,

And then, of course,
Found those.

When investigators
Arrive on the scene,

They discover
Several projectiles

In the floor and wall area.

We recover
Any shell casings?

None.

The fact that there
Was no shell casing,

My natural thought
Is that a revolver

Was used to shoot the victim.

-detective demery.
-yeah.

We just got word
That the victim,

Charlie lewis,
Died at the hospital.

-okay.
-that's not all.

Homicide's on scene.

Great.

Now that mr. Lewis has expired,
It's a homicide case now.

It's no longer
A robbery case.

With homicide on the scene,
My job is basically

To pass on what I've learned
And get out of the way.

When another division
Or another unit

Is placed in charge
Of the investigation,

You become
Kind of second string.

Demery:
I got to admit:

I was born to work cases
Like this.

It's in my blood.

Like they say, "You can take
The dog out of the fight,

The fight out of the dog."

Once I start working
A case, it's mine.

I mean, I'm invested in it.

I'm gonna finish it.

I've responded to a robbery
In a local tire shop.

The victim's been shot.

I've learned the victim
Has since died.

Now that case becomes a homicide
Case and no longer mine.

After the homicide
Unit arrives,

I really don't think these guys
Are workingthis case

The way it should be worked.

I don't see the motivation.
I don't see the passion.

When I go to a case
Or I show up at a crime scene,

I consider it mine.

Everything there is mine.

I'm responsible for it
At that point.

The fact of letting
Someone else come in

And take over
From where I left off

Just doesn't sit well
Because it's still mine

And, at the end of the day,

I still got
A responsibility to it.

When the robbery unit
Was no longer

Going to be the lead
In this investigation,

It did not go over well
With my detectives

Who had responded to the scene;

In particular,

I was pissed.

I didn't have anyintentions

On allowing these guys
To work a case

That I was sure
They couldn't solve.

As I've ever seen demery.

This is day-shift homicide."

They chose to work days
For a reason.

To a dead end quick,

And they'll go home.

We'll solve it.

Thinking it
Might be related?

My initial thought was this
May be part of a crime spree.

Sometimes when somebody
Commits arobbery,

They commit two or three,
If they don't get

What they want
From the first robbery.

I need to talk to my victim
As soon as possible.

Things are fresher
In their mind.

Their recollection is clearer.

How you doing?
-hey, detective. How are ya?

This our victim?

-yeah, this is our guy.
-all right, thanks.

At the scene, there was
A report of a young man

Who had called in and said
He had been robbed by two males.

How you doing?

What can you tell me
About what happened here?

Well, I was cutting
Through the park.

[ running footsteps ]

-aye! Where's the money?
-where the money at?

The victim explains to me
They approached him,

Asked him for what he had,
And he refused to give them

What he had.
-I ain't got no money!

-I ain't got no money, man!
-come on, man. Come on.

[ suspenseful music climbs ]

When they figured
I wasn't going down

Without a fight,
They took off.

What'd these guys
Look like?

It was just a couple
Of young black guys.

That's basically the description
We got from moham's tire.

So my thought at that point is
Maybe they're the same people.

We're gonna do our best
To try and track them down.

At this point, I'm still
Thinking about this crime

That happened,
Where charlie lewis was killed.

The second case
Where the victim was robbed,

It was pretty superficial.

My thought is trying
To work them both simultaneously

And hopefully
That there was a connection.

Hey, man.

Get a couple of guys
Out here,

Canvass the area, see if
You can find anything.

I'm gonna head back
To the station.

At 5:00, I returned
To the station

And I see the homicide guys
Leaving as I'm coming in.

-jeff.
-yes, sir.

I'm going home.

I'm right behind you,
My friend.

The wife's got plans
For this evening.

It confirms everything crow said

About them leaving
At quitting time.

So we gonna pick up

Where we left off?
-pretty much.

Crow's a very good investigator.

Even though he's a supervisor,
He was kind of hands-on,

And we kind of worked
Off each other.

Cool. I'm gonna ride out
To see the family.

You want to come
With me?

Yeah. Let's go.

[melancholy tune plays]
In every murder case I work,

I try to find out as much
As I can about the victim.

This time, that's 77-year-old
Charlie lewis.

So my first visit is
To charlie's daughter

Lenora thomas.

My dad was a good,
Decent guy, you know?

He was in the military.

He worked hard.

He never gave
Anybody any trouble.

Lenora explained to me her
Father was an old war veteran,

Kind of a stern, old-fashioned,
Oldschool kind of guy.

Kind of like, you know, the kind
Of guy my grandfather was.

[crying] It's crazy.

He was working really hard
To get his diploma.

That was so
Important to him.

He had one piece
Of unfinished business

And that was getting
His diploma,

Getting a high-school diploma.

I understood that feeling

Because I wanted
To finish my degree,

So it made it a little more,
Uh, personal.

But, you know,
When the officers came by,

They gave me some
Of his belongings.

-mm-hmm.
-it was weird because

I saw his keys and some of his
Stuff, but that pocketknife

That he always carried with him
Was missing.

She described
The pocketknife.

It matched the pocketknife
That was at the crime scene.

May I ask you this?

You think that, if your
Dad felt threatened,

He might use that knife
To defend himself?

Oh, yeah.

My dad would've used it
To defend himself,

Or anyone else.

He was not easily intimidated.

Okay.

Dixon:
Mr. Lewis was the kind of guy

That he didn't take
Any crap off anyone.

He would do what he needed
To do to protect himself.

With what his daughter said,

You start piecing together
What might have happened.

You know, he may have
Seen an opportunity

To try to cut or stab
One of these offenders.

Why they did what they did.

If you're investigating
A robbery that doesn't result

In any type of injury or death,
It's pretty easy.

But that added element
Of taking somebody's life,

That changes the scenario

Because you have to figure out
Why they robbed somebody,

And then you have to figure out
Why they would use violence.

After I talked to the victim's
Immediate family,

The next step is to talk
To a patrol officer

Who knows that area.

They can give you what
Direction you need to go to,

What's gonna be important,
Who you need to talk to.

Who the uniform is

That works that beat?

Yeah, it's
A buddy of mine.

To bet homicide

Hasn't talked to him yet?

There's information out there,
If you go gather it,

But a lot of these people won't
Volunteer and bring it to you.

To come out there
And talk to them?

Then they can be
A wealth of information.

That shooting took place

Well, one of my c.I.S said that
They saw a crown vic parked

Outside the tire shop
During the shooting.

This patrol officer advised him

That someone had seen
A ford crown victoria

About a street away,
And that two black male subjects

Had jumped into this
Light-colored crown vic

And had drove away.

For that driver?

Go by the name
Of lando.

Lando.

You know lando?

Never heard of him.

This is the reason
Why you don't walk past

A patrol officer
Who knows his beat.

It's pretty safe to say
That the person sitting

In the vehicle
Is the getaway driver.

Lando is very important.

I need to know who he is.

So, with having
The name of lando,

The police department
Has computer databases

Where we could put that name in
And start looking

For names that matched
In a geographical area.

If you go to the alias database
And you put in the known alias,

It will spit out the name,
The date of birth,

The last known address,
Height, weight,

Things of that nature,
For that particular alias.

And sometimes
There's more than one.

Ah!

There's a couple
Of matches.

After I enter lando's
Name into the system,

I get three possibilities.

One is a gentleman
That's entirely too old,

The other one is someone
Who doesn't live in the area,

And the third one is perfect.
It fits.

It's renando johnson,
21-year-old male, black,

And that was my first lead.

Looks like he's been
Arrested a few times.

Why don't you print out
His mug shot?

We'll show it around,
See if anybody knows him.

Yeah, for sure.
You know what?

It is saturday night, right?

The good gangsters go?

That particular club downtown
Attracts a lot of clientele

That are into criminal activity.

We've worked shootings there.

Robberies there.

We've worked homicides
In the parking lot there.

So, if you have someone who's
Engaged in criminal activity,

It would not at all be unusual

For that to be the club
That he would go to.

Demery:
When we get to the club,
We contact the bouncer.

-what's happenin'?

Good.

The bouncers know everybody
That comes in the club.

The ones who sell dope,
The ones who commit robberies,

The ones who shoot people.

They're very in touch
With their community.

Listen.
I'm looking for this guy,

Goes by the name of lando.

His real name
Is renaldo johnson.

You seen him in here tonight?

I haven't seen him tonight,
But he does come in a lot.

He's not in the club.

This is gonna be a little
More difficult than I thought.

I know where
His girlfriend lives.

He's probably over there.
It's on wilson street.

You know, those apartments?

It's on the second floor.

-yeah.

After I talk to the bouncer

And I get his girlfriend's
Address, I feel real good.

I know we're going
In the right direction.

The moment sergeant crow
And I roll up to this address,

We know we've hit paydirt.

We can see a white crown vic,

And I know now that
This is the right place.

Look right there, man.
Bingo.

-all right, you ready?
-yeah, I'm ready.

When going to capture somebody
That's suspected of a murder,

The idea is to be prepared
And not underestimate

The fact that they may
Try to kill you.

So what we're gonna do now
Is cover the doors

And approach, weapons drawn,
And get him out.

Moments like this are
Exactly why do police work.

I heard somebody describe it
As in a split second,

You may have to give a life,
Take a life, or save a life.

You ready?

Yeah. All right.

Police work is, uh,
99% boredom

And 1% sheer terror.

So, this started off
As a robbery case

That ended up to be a homicide
That was taken from me.

Now I've gotten it back.

We've identified a suspect
And we're on his doorstep.

Our guns are drawn
And we have no idea

What's gonna happen next.

[ banging on door ]

We get him back to the office

And go through
The formalities and, um,

He begins to tell the story
Of what happened.

So, why don't you take us
Through what happened?

So, me
And a couple buddies,

We all work at this
Fast-food place.

We don't make
A lot of money.

So somebody told us
About a dominoes game

Going on
At that tire shop.

According to lando,
They heard about

These dominoes games
Where all this money

Was supposed to be exchanged
Or gambled for

And, in their minds, they would
Get a pretty good score.

All right, now, remember:
Go in there,

Get the money, and get
Back out, all right?

Let's make this real smooth.
-all right, okay.

Y'all got everything?
Y'all got the gun?

-you ready, man?
-all right, man,

-let's do it.
-in and out.

Demery:
According to lando,
No one was gonna get shot.

The guns were there just to

Show the seriousness
Of their robbery.

So, after a while,
They come back out.

[panting] Go, go.
Go, go, go, go.

-somebody got shot.
-what?

What?! What do you mean,
Somebody got shot?

-somebody got shot. Go!
-man, start running.

Get outta here. Drive.

[ tires screech ]

[ zooming ]

Talking to lando,

The thing that actually
Struck me was the fact

That he was giving everything up
So quickly and so easily.

A real gangster doesn't
Give up any information.

Lando wasn't a real gangster.

Lando was a little boy.

Who were these guys
You were with?

Cordero campbell
And randy marshall.

-how old are they?
-I think they're both 17.

When I found out how young
They were, I was so shocked.

You know,
It's essentially kids.

And it can't be more tragic.

I know what happens

When somebody
Gets convicted of murder.

You know, they got to prison.
They never come home.

They have essentially
Ended their life.

Okay.

What did you guys
Do with those guns?

Look, I don't know.

At cordero's house.

His motivation
At that point was obvious:

He wanted to get the best
Possible deal for hisself

And sell out whoever it was
That we wanted more.

When we get to cordero's house,
It's the same thing.

We're gonna go guns drawn.

Even though he lives
There with his parents

Any resistance.

Went back to the office.

After we robbed them,

At that point,
We had enough probable cause

To cordero's home.

We didn't find anything.

It was not until
We looked under the bed

And found a shoebox.

And, in the shoebox, we located
A .38-caliber revolver,

Which ultimately was proven
To be the murder weapon.

We got him.

Really?

Time to have another little
Chat with mr. Campbell.

All right.
I'm going in now.

Now, I have cordero campbell
Right where I want him.

[ ominous chord strikes ]

Under your bed.

Campbell's adamant that
He's not the shooter.

He doesn't deny being there.

He's emphatic about

He was not the shooter.

Randy marshall's the shooter

And gives me randy's address.

I call sergeant crow

And ask him to meet me
At randy marshall's house.

Guns drawn, once again.

This party never stops.

When I knock on randy's door,
His father has no idea

What's going on here,
And he wants answers.

He wants to know why

There's a homicide detective
Looking for his son.

Randy, this is

He points me
Into the kitchen.

When I see this kid,
I'm totally shocked.

I'm staring down
My prime suspect,

A 17-year-old kid.

Problem is
Is I've seen him before.

We buried my grandfather.

The whole bogus report
In the park

Was a way of covering
His tracks,

Explaining away his injuries,

And distancing himself
From being involved in a crime.

He knew there were witnesses
That could identify him,

So, at this point,
He contrives,

In his pea-brain mind,

That the investigators
Will believe

That he was also
Actually robbed.

Is that true?

[ sinister music climbs ]

[quietly] Oh, hell.

I could see that his father
Was very disappointed.

And both these individuals
Had parents

That were involved
In their lives

And it was difficult
To understand

Why they would do
Something like that

Or how they got to that point.

But right now, I need
Randy marshall to tell me,

In his own words,
Why he did what he did.

So with the sun coming up,

Randy and I take a ride
Down to the station.

It was morning when I get back
To the station with marshall.

Day-shift homicide guys
Are coming into work.

They're shocked to see me
Come in with marshall.

Cruise next month.

And probably a little bent,
To be honest with you,

That this robbery unit
Not only put together,

But located the murder weapon,

Located the suspects,
And had them all in jail.

I think we got this

At that moment, I kind of felt
They were insignificant.

I got the case that I was

Supposed to be working
Originally.

I really didn't need anybody's
Permission to do it.

And I didn't really care
What they said after that.

Marshall, campbell,
And johnson --

All three had the same scared
Look in their face,

Like little boys trying
To figure out the system.

Marshall was clearly nervous
As I begin to interview him.

Immediately, marshall tells me
A story about playing dominoes,

And it was a lie.

He told me that they got angry
And didn't want him

To leave with their money,
And tried to attack him.

Detective demery knew
That's a lie

Based on the witnesses' accounts
Of what truly happened

Inside of the tire shop,
As well as his co-defendants,

Who have already rolled on him
And told investigators

The truth of what
Randy marshall actually did.

There was a second there
That I think I slipped up

And called him "Child."

And that was because
That's what I felt

When I was talking to this kid
Who was trying to lie to me

About something
I've already figured out.

He thought about it
For a minute

And then he told me the truth.

He told me the same story
That cordero and lando told me.

So, lando essentially was the
Brains behind the operation:

He provided the car,

He provided the weapons,

He had all the intel
On this dominoes game,

And he brings them there.

And essentially,
Most of it boils down

To two 17-year-olds
That are complete idiots.

Put the money
On the table.

Whoa!

What's the deal?

Why ain't y'all moving?!
Put the money on the table!

[ suspenseful music plays ]

Once they collected the money,
Marshall says that,

After he and cordero started
To exit the building,

Charlie lewis was
Trying to stop him.

Nobody move.

Don't get brave, bruh!

[ suspenseful music plays ]

[ suspenseful music climbs ]

Aah!

[ four gunshots ]

-come on, go.
-let's go, let's go!

Ah!

[ door squeaks ]

Demery: he said he fired
Three or four shots --

He wasn't sure.
-come on, charlie.

Charlie,
Stay with us, man.

When it was all said and done,

Marshall tried
To claim self-defense:

That he would not
Have shot charlie

If charlie hadn't have
Stabbed him.

To which, you know,
Detective demery's answer was,

"Well, charlie wouldn't
Have stabbed you

If you hadn't been
Threatening to kill him."

An aggressor can't claim
[chuckle] Self-defense.

If you are the person
Who initiates the confrontation

And someone tries
To defend themselves,

It's asinine to think that
You're some sort of victim.

Marshall eventually went to
Trial for second-degree murder,

And he was sentenced
To life in prison

Without the benefit of parole.

Cordero campbell got
A plea agreement

And was sentenced
To 25 years in prison.

And lando was sentenced
To 5 years in prison.

[melancholy tune plays]
The tragedy of this case

Is that one individual,
Charlie lewis,

Lost his life over $38.

Mr. Lewis should be
Remembered as a hero

And he died hero's death,
Trying to save his friends.

Demery:
Mr. Lewis and my grandfather
Were cut from the same cloth:

You know, death before dishonor.

It's that --
That sense of, uh,

Personal responsibility
Of those around you.

The reality is
Is we need people like that.

Those two men will be the men
That I aspire to be.
