That I meet up there.

But that morning,
There was no one there,

For whatever reason.

As I was walking down the main
Parking lot on the south side,

I happened to notice, like,
A pile of clothes or something,

So I walked over to it,

Because there's usually never
Anything on the parking lot

Except beer cans and bottles.

At first, I thought
It was a mannequin.

Ma'am?

It appeared that somebody

Just laid down on the ground
And went to sleep.

Are you okay?

I got close and realized

That she was not sleeping.

Demery: as a kid, I remember
My grandparents' house

Was always filled
With kindness and warmth.

But after my mother
Was murdered...

[ thud, glass shatters ]

...Something changed,

Like a dark cloud

Drifted over the house

And never went away.

Every day, that cloud
Got darker and darker.

The light, well,
It was so hard to find.

We started looking for it
In all the wrong places.

That had been empty
For a while.

When I got to the crime scene,
I immediately noticed

That there was nothing there
Besides the body

And the responding officers.

No witnesses, not sure
On cause of death.

Okay.
Let's take a look.

The fact that the body
Was placed where it was,

Just in the middle of a
Parking lot, is pretty uncommon.

It looked like it
Was discarded there.

Holmes: it's the perfect place
To go and dump a body,

'cause no one goes there,

And you can't really see
From the road what's going on.

Demery: the blood evidence
Is very minimal,

And it almost confirms the fact
That she wasn't killed there.

Somewhere there had to be
Enough blood to kill her.

And it just wasn't present.

She is familiar to me.

I don't know where
I know her from,

But she's very familiar to me.

Looks like she's got
Some nasty cuts.

There was an injury to her neck,

And there's a large slice
Beneath her eye,

So much so that
It's almost to the bone.

At that point, I wasn't sure
If it was the injury

To her neck, the fatal injury,

But what I was certain of is
That there was no gunshot.

It was a knife
Or a cutting instrument

Or something along those lines.

What do we have here?

There was blood caked
To her hand,

And in that blood,

There was, like,
Long strands of human hair,

As if she had struggled
With somebody else,

Maybe fighting back.

How was she discovered?

A jogger found her
While running.

Demery:
Looking at her, she didn't seem
Like a likely victim.

She didn't look
Transient or homeless

Or anything of the sort.

Someone's gonna be
Looking for this woman.

I reach out to the missing
Persons unit to see

If they've received any reports

That match our victim.

You got anything?

Someone just came in
In the last few hours.

What's her name,
And what does she look like?

Demery: they described
An older woman

That was well dressed,
Fair skin.

Her name is
Rose coleman.

She was reported missing
By her daughter, tiffany.

When we found out that she was

We thought that maybe one
Of her patients attacked her.

And I'm there for a while,

And three kids show up,

Appearing to be looking

For somebody
They were gonna meet,

So I figure these are my guys.

Or not these guys were involved
In rose coleman's murder.

So, at this point,

My thought is that
I'm hoping to get a clue

From the parking garage,
And I want to go to the casino

And see if there's
Any surveillance tape,

Get an idea
Of what may have happened

After they parted ways.

All the casinos in shreveport

Are pretty much located
Along the red river

And a short distance
From each other.

People like ms. Spates
And ms. Coleman

Go to the casino
To enjoy themselves.

But there are people
That go there for strictly vice,

And my concern was that
They got crossed up with someone

Who is going to the casino
For all the wrong reasons.

Holmes: if you're going to
A casino, especially to gamble,

You have to have some money.

So, a lot of people
Will look at a casino

As a perfect place
To go and rob somebody.

You need to be careful.

Crazy stuff happens there.

The surveillance footage
From the casino parking lot.

As I expected,
There's not much to see.

But after a few minutes,

I spot her.

I finally see where mrs. Coleman

Is actually exiting the casino.

In one frame, you can see her

Clearly walking
Towards her vehicle.

Actually has long, brown hair.

And it kind of makes
Sense of the hair

That was found in the hand
Of ms. Coleman.

It's probably
The suspect's hair.

The back passenger door's open,

And it looks like the female
Is pushing her

Into the back seat
Of her own car,

And then the white female
Gets in that vehicle,

And she can be seen clearly

Driving out of the parking lot
In rose's vehicle.

So now the video surveillance

Starts to clear up
A lot of the mysteries.

One, for instance,
Is where it actually happened.

But the video doesn't
Answer all the questions,

Like manner of death
Or even why.

But it does give me
An indication

On where to start.

Create a still photo
From the surveillance tape.

Then I ask dispatch
To issue a bolo

On rose coleman's
Stolen vehicle.

On a 2005 black ford sedan.

About 45 minutes, an hour,
Away from shreveport.

The vehicle's been abandoned
On the side of the road.

Is well outside the jurisdiction

Of the shreveport
Police department.

Thankfully, an officer
From the city of natchitoches

Is already on the scene.

Well, for starters,
We got a bloody back seat.

As I examined the vehicle, it's
Clear that there's some blood.

And it looks as if, though,

The person was on
One side of the car,

Then the other side of the car.

At that point,
It's difficult to determine

Whether the person
Was moving on their own,

Or did the blood come
As the result of a transfer

When the person was drug out
Of the vehicle

Onto the parking lot pavement.

Yeah, the lady
That led me to the car,

She's over there
In my patrol car.

A beloved mother
And grandmother,

Who was abducted
From a shreveport casino,

Then murdered and dumped

In an abandoned parking lot.

Now this case has led me
To natchitoches,

A small town
South of shreveport.

My killer ditched
Rose coleman's car

60 miles from shreveport.

She is still on the run.

I'm in a convenience store
In natchitoches, louisiana.

So we're talking to the clerk,
Who's told me

People inside of his store
Were actually carjacked.

So, this woman
Pulled a knife on a customer

-in the store, too?

She actually pulled
A knife on me first.

He explained
The suspect leaves the store

And sees a car running outside

With an elderly female
In the vehicle

While the husband
Was still inside the store.

She was crazy, you know?
She's definitely, like,

Whacked out on something,

Did you call the police?

According to the clerk,

Natchitoches police were quick
To arrive on the scene,

But they didn't stick
Around very long.

They took off. They didn't say
Where they were going,

If they were coming
Back or anything.

How long ago
Did they leave?

Uh, not long,
Maybe five minutes ago.

So, at that point,
I call a contact

That I have in the
Natchitoches police department

And ask him what's going on.
And he explained to me

That his officers
Were on a high-speed chase.

Man:
One of our officers spotted

A car that was involved
In a car-jacking.

[ siren wailing ]

The detective explained to me
That his officers

Were chasing a car
That fits the description

Of the one that was at
The convenience store.

Man: pull over!

Pull the car over!

She nearly killed
One of our guys,

And now we've got
All available units

Trying to chase her down.

Oh, really? Right now?

The explanation
For the clerk saying

The officers left abruptly
Is clear now.

They hear the car
Is being chased,

And they join in the chase.

We're considering
Our options right now,

But it looks like we're gonna
Deploy some spike strips

Over near exit 12
Of I-49.

I'm on my way. Thanks.

Holmes: high-speed chases
Are incredibly dangerous.

This person knows
That they're being chased

By the police,
And they're desperate.

When people get desperate,
They'll do anything.

Before she's here?

She's about
3 minutes out, sir.

When I get there, the officers

Have already
Laid out spike strips

And were waiting for
The vehicle to cross that line.

[ police radio chatter ]

Two minutes.

Once spike strips are laid out

And the suspect crosses
Those strips,

All four tires
Are usually flattened.

The vehicle is, at that point,
Rendered unusable.

The best-case scenario is
The vehicle's gonna be disabled,

But when you're thinking
Of a car

That weighs that much,
Moving at that amount of speed,

And it loses control,
It could cause some injury.

I see the vehicle
Approaching the spike strips.

High-speed chases
Are probably one of

The most dangerous things
In police work,

Because the person
Can lose control of the vehicle,

And it can go anywhere.

You don't know
What's gonna happen.

Demery:
I hate addiction,

For what it did
To my grandmother...

...The way it fed off the pain

She felt after
My mother's death...

...Consumed the goodness in her,

Replaced the light
With darkness.

But in a way, addiction was
The best teacher I ever had.

It showed me how to keep
The demons at bay,

How to exert control
Over the world around me.

That's what drove me
To police work.

You diagnose the crime,
Find the killer

And you cuff him.

Problem solved.

I think this case
Is about addiction,

And I think it's about
Both sides of it.

We're dealing with somebody
That's definitely,

Desperately trying to get
Somewhere other than shreveport.

She's attempted to car-jack

At least three or four people.

She's acting erratically
And is still on the run.

My hope at this point is that
She approaches the spike strips,

She's stopped, and we're able
To approach the vehicle,

Get her
And take her into custody.

The spike strips popped
A couple of her tires.

They were her demise.

Routine search,

We find a syringe on her person.

That's it.

The fact that the suspect
Had a syringe on her person,

I was pretty certain
That she was a substance abuser.

Watch your head.

When the suspect is arrested,
Investigators find out

That the suspect's name
Is stacey blount.

She's from south louisiana,
And she's in her late 20s.

She has two kids.

She comes from
A pretty decent family.

Demery: as I begin to speak
With stacey, the ultimate goal

Is not to give off
Any signs of judgment

Or anything that would make her
Feel uncomfortable.

Stacey told me she met
A friend at the casino,

And her drug that she was using
That night was meth.

But she said
That she preferred heroin,

But it was difficult
To locate in shreveport,

So she was heading
Back to baton rouge

To get her drug of choice.

So, she hatches this plan

To get back to south louisiana.

Demery: she said she went up
To the parking garage,

And she saw a lady
She thought was elderly,

And she watched her
Go to her vehicle.

The reality was ms. Coleman

Just happened to be somebody
Coming out the casino

When she was looking
For somebody to car-jack.

-[ grunts ]
-aah!

I don't want to hurt you.
I just need your car.

No!

No! No!

Get in the car!

-no! Stop!
-get in the back.

Demery: stacey tried
To force her in the trunk,

But the victim created
Too much resistance.

I know my mother.
It wasn't that she was

Fighting over the car
Or her wallet or her purse.

She refused to get in the trunk.

She was gonna take her
And do god knows what,

So she'd rather die then.

So that's how the fight came up.

Get in there.

Ohh!
[ screaming ]

[ coughing ]

The very first cut at the casino

Was the one
That cut her carotid artery,

And she was bleeding out.

[ rose crying ]

Lord jesus!

Please! Please,
Take me to a hospital.

Pl-please.

I-I'm a nurse.

I can't imagine what rose
Coleman was going through.

She was a nurse.
She was smart enough to know

That it would take minutes
To bleed out and be dead.

That fear before death

Must have been terrifying
For her.

[ sobbing ]
Where are you taking me?

-shut up.
-oh, no!

[ coughs ]

[ music volume increases ]

For her to explain
That this woman was gurgling

And begging for her life,
And her response to that

Was just to turn up the music
So she didn't have to hear it

Was something that I don't think
I've ever heard anybody say.

And I've interviewed
A lot of killers,

And none of them seemed
To have that level of coldness.

Stacey was definitely
Trying to illustrate

That there was a difference
Between her

And her when she was on drugs.

She explained
That when she was on drugs,

She just didn't care.

Mack: eventually, she decided
She had to get rid of rose.

And I think stacey essentially
Thought at some point

She was dead in the back seat.

So, she drives out
To the at&t plant.

She's familiar with that area.
She grew up around there.

[ stacey grunting ]

Demery:
She said she threw the purse

And cellphone and the other
Belongings of ms. Coleman

Out of the car
And traveled south on I-49

Until she ran out of gas.

Stacey couldn't believe herself
That she did it.

She was like,
"I was just so high."

And she claimed
Meth made her a murderer.

And meth, I promise you,

Does not make people murderers.

There is something
Evil, evil, evil

Inside of stacey blount.

Rhonda: [ crying ] I can never
Forgive stacey blount.

She has took away

The best thing I ever had
In my life.

Hold this
On your chin, please.

Demery:
It may have been the drugs that
Turned stacey into a killer,

But that's no excuse.

I still throw the book at her.

Stacey pled
To second-degree murder

Without the possibility

Or benefit of parole
Or probation,

So she's gonna spend the rest
Of her life in prison.

Amber: never in a million years
Would I ever thought,

You know, something bad
Like that would happen.

She was a phenomenal woman.

It hurts to hear
About a story like this,

This woman who has done
So much good

For people like stacey.

She dedicated her life
To helping people

With substance-abuse problems.

Under a different circumstance,

Rose would've helped her
With her addiction.

Demery: the fact that stacey
Committed the murder

And ms. Coleman was the victim
Of the murder,

Illustrates that it
Doesn't matter who you are

Or where you come from,

Everybody is subjected

To the perils of drug use
And abuse,

And drug addicts can take on

All different types
Of personalities and personas.

And once they get desperate
For whatever it is,

They're subject to do anything.
