Crow: There are people Trying to come out.

There's a commotion inside.

It's obvious that there's been Some type of incident.

I think that's when he realizes That there was a bar fight.

[ indistinct shouting indoors ]

Hey. You all right?

[ thud ]

What happened?

As he gets a closer look,

It's obvious to him That something

Is severely wrong With this man.

He's bleeding. His shirt is soaked in blood.

[ asphyxiating ]

This man is dyin'! Call a ambulance!

This man needs some help!

[ suspenseful chord strikes ] [ heartbeat]

Demery: As a child, I always looked up To my older brother patrick.

In my eyes, He could do no wrong.

He was the kid I always wanted to be.

But it's funny The way life works,

The different ways Tragedy changes things.

My memories of My mother are vague.

But patrick?

My mother's death haunts him.

It was a pretty quiet night.

There wasn't a lot going on.

I was doing reports And just kind of mundane work.

I get the call that there's Been a stabbing

At a place called Benny's tea room.

Yeah, copy that.

Benny's tea room. All right.

I'm on my way.

When a homicide call Comes in, the world stops.

Your mindset changes.

Your adrenaline Starts to flow.

It feels like you Have a purpose.

Mack: Violence in benny's tea room Was a pretty common thing.

You gotta remember, everybody That goes to this place

All live in the same Neighborhood.

There's bad blood always Between somebody.

-what's happening? -hey, detective.

-so what do we got? -one stabbing victim

-okay. -we found him out here.

We've got his wallet.

[ radio chatter ]

Demery: His identification Showed jw fuller,

55-year-old male From shreveport.

Whether or not Any vital organs were hit

Was a mystery, at that point, So he was transported

To the hospital For traumatic treatment.

Inside mr. Fuller's wallet Was a moderate amount of money.

The fact that he had money In his wallet

Meant that he wasn't robbed.

Junior: My dad was a good person,

Fun-loving, caring, Family-oriented.

He got along with everybody, Really, had lots of friends.

All right. So what Do we know about him?

Not much, really.

He was involved In a brawl inside the bar

When he got stabbed. -okay.

Demery: When you're at a bar and you Have a mixture of alcohol,

A mixture of bad attitudes, It's a powder keg.

Bar brawls, They're nightmares.

There are so many people That are drunk and unruly

And it's chaotic.

We got any Witnesses inside?

There's about a dozen People or so inside,

But most of them Intoxicated.

Me? I don't drink alcohol.

Never have.

So the idea of questioning 12 drunk witnesses

Doesn't exactly appeal to me, But it's my best chance

Of understanding What's happened.

Detective, we have Something over here.

Investigators Discovered a blue shirt

On the side of the road Close to benny's tea room

And it had blood all over it

And they assumed That it belonged to the victim.

Inside his pocket was A small blue diamond pill

That had been broken in half And it's commonly associated

With male sexual performance And enhancement.

Jw fuller was going To benny's tea room

Probably to look For a good time.

Demery: I can't believe what I'm seeing.

A brawl just went down.

A guy was just stabbed

And people are carrying on Like it's no big deal.

Somebody needs to get A handle on this, now.

[ suspenseful music climbs ]

All right, listen up!

Your party Is officially over.

This is no longer Your bar.

This is now My crime scene.

Killin' the music Was step one.

Shed a little light On the subject.

There was one light Behind the bar,

The light from a jukebox,

And no other lights on In the bar.

It was dark.

Yes, sir. They're on the truck.

And against the wall.

After the floor's lit up, I can see blood.

What the blood told me was that He was stabbed inside that bar

And fuller was just Part of the fight.

The problem is, Is that most of the blood

Had been trampled over.

You can't analyze a bloodstain, If it's been smeared.

Gathering evidence after A bar fight is difficult.

The evidence is stepped on, Drinks are spilled.

It's cross-contaminated. It can be a nightmare.

Now, I know that my victim, Jw fuller,

Was stabbed during the brawl.

What I don't know is Who was wielding the knife.

Was this person stabbed By someone he knew?

Was he just caught Up in a fight?

I was told that a bunch Of people took off

Before we got here.

People flee for Different reasons.

Some of them Because they got warrants,

Some of them 'cause "I don't want to be involved,"

And then some of them because They actually did the stabbin'.

Demery: I'm guessing, From the looks of things,

Most of the people that drink At benny's are regulars.

It's not like they're getting A lot of tourist traffic here.

So just the fact That jw was here at all

Means folks probably knew him.

I approach mr. Sap

And I ask him what he can Tell me about the incident.

You know, one second, Things are going good.

Next second, everything's Out of control.

He's a good customer.

You know, he's in here On a regular basis.

Demery finds out that Fuller lives nearby,

He's at benny's all the time, And he works at a steel mill.

Junior: He was a very hard worker, A good provider, a good person.

He wasn't a violent person Towards anyone.

That just wasn't him.

We know something happened To start a big, huge fight.

What I'm hoping is, Is that these witnesses

Can tell me What that something is.

Came out the bathroom.

There was this guy, Blood all over the place.

I can see an accident happening Or something going in once,

But then to be stabbed, In the chest, twice,

That doesn't sound Like an accident.

One here, Above the navel.

The second one In the chest.

Both were deep.

The fatal stab Wound went straight

Through his chest, Into his heart.

Whoever stabbed mr. Fuller Stabbed him once

And then stabbed him again.

It was clear that The intent was to kill him.

The other significant Information

Learned from the pathologist

Was that he had Wounds to his hands.

They could've been Either offensive

Or defensive but, either way, Indicating that he had been

In a physical encounter, More than just getting stabbed.

From the bar brawl.

He was one of the main players.

I just got hit in the head With a bottle.

This was the only person That was able to tell me

And saw a man And a woman fighting.

So, if two people begin, It's almost like it's a fuse

And, once it ignites, It's like a domino effect.

So before you know it, You have everybody engulfed

In this big, huge fight.

And the woman?

Small was able to tell us That fuller had been involved

And she's very attractive.

I immediately notice she has A bruise to her eye.

For me, the bruise confirms Martha vincent's statement,

That dianne was at the heart Of the altercation at the bar.

That spoke to you the other Night at the hospital?

Yeah, so? What do you want?

But is she the one Who stabbed jw?

That's what I'm trying To find out.

Talking to dianne dane, I realize that

It's not going to go that easy.

Dianne says that she had been Seeing fuller for quite a while.

And they both go To the tea room.

And she starts to describe She's grown tired of the fact

When I told dianne That fuller had been stabbed,

She didn't seem surprised.

She tried to feign This look of shock,

But I think that was just her Trying to throw me off the track

But it certainly explains Why dianne would take a chair

To the back of jw's head.

Was hit him over the Head with a chair.

I didn't stab anybody.

As I talked to dianne, I realized

That there's probably no reason For him just to attack her.

She's not telling me Everything.

See, a man doesn't Walk into a crowded bar,

As I'm talking to charles, I notice something on his hands.

He had wounds to his hands

That were either stab wounds Or defense wounds,

Or wounds that indicated That he was in a fight.

Hitting and punching Each other.

And charles knocked him Into somebody else.

And then it just spread.

Everybody just started Fighting everybody.

Dianne tells me that, At some point during that fight,

Charles pulls out a knife And stabs jw.

[echoing] Aah-ahhhh!

Jw, he was Stumbling around

And he was just Bleeding all over.

[ sniffle ]

What did charles do With that knife, dianne?

He threw it in the pond Down the way.

After dianne tells me Where they threw the knife,

I called the fire department.

His only position now is To try to justify what he did.

That warranted A deadly-force situation.

I charged charles With second-degree murder,

The intentional killing Of jw fuller.

It's punishable by A mandatory life sentence.

While charles changes Into his new, orange jumpsuit,

Dianne is shown the door.

It was nothing That dianne did actively

To contribute To jw fuller's death.

If dianne is guilty Of anything,

It's bad decisions, But certainly not murder.

Prior to trial, charles Pleads guilty to manslaughter

And gets sentenced to 25 years In the penitentiary, hard labor.

I'm sure everyone involved

Would have done things Differently,

But at the time, The jealousy, the rage,

Things just Ended up happening

That should've Never happened.

Holmes: The person I feel sorry For the most

In one night, she finds out, Not only is he dead,

But he probably Was cheating on her,
