But when I do, It's the same thing every time.

My life has been defined By what happened that day.

Yeah, it's been 40 years.

But in some ways,

I'm still that little kid,

Always searching for something That's been taken from me...

...Searching for something I can Never seem to get back.

This is demery.

I get a call from the captain.

That -- that was odd Because you --

You don't get calls From captains

Unless there's, uh, Something was kind of important.

Yeah, I know the place.

He starts explaining to me

That there is a body

That has been found Floating in the pond.

Are they thinking this is the Missing girl from shreveport?

I remembered that, uh, there was A teenage girl that was missing.

So my immediate thought was,

"This is probably Gonna be her."

Coincidences just don't Happen like that.

All right. I'm on my way.

People always say Life is about choices

And that some choices Are harder than others.

But for me, When it came to work,

The choice wasn't really A choice at all.

Homicide was the thing That I was devoted to.

[ police radio chatter ]

Homicide was like my wife.

Everything else in life Was just a mistress.

By the time I get to the scene,

It's already awash In blue lights.

-how you doing? -what's going on, man?

What do we got?

We have a female, uh, Facedown in the water.

I have two officers Down there

With the body right now.

-we got an I.D. On the victim? -no, we do not.

Let's go take a look.

Let's see what We've got here.

As I get closer, I noticed the decomposition.

I felt she had been In the water for --

For quite some time.

The first thing that I noticed

About her body Was the gunshot wound,

And that was to her back.

It was clear that She didn't just drown.

She didn't just Slip into the water.

It wasn't a suicide attempt. It was a murder.

All right. Let's flip her.

Oh, geez. [ coughs ]

She's pregnant.

There's no question about it.

Even though the body's Inflated or larger

Than normal, proportionally,

It still looked As she was pregnant.

Go get me that Detective who's working

The missing-girl case, please.

Looking at her body, I'm thinking,

"How did this happen?"

The fact that someone Would murder someone

While they were pregnant, Visibly pregnant,

Is a crime against nature.

What type of person Would do this?

Tavia sills, College student,

18 years old, 5 months pregnant.

This was one of those cases That really stick with you.

She was a young female, Just graduated high school,

Going to college, Working two jobs.

She was making her way.

She was going to Make it work for her.

And she was very excited About her life.

Definitely can't be a different Missing pregnant girl?

I mean, you can run some, Uh, dna tests, if you want.

I would. She's still wearing

The same clothes her Parents said she was wearing

When she went missing,

Right down to The black sneakers.

Demery: the clothing fit,

Particularly, almost like A fingerprint,

That she had on black sneakers

That were low-quarter reeboks.

It's just too specific.

It was clear that this was, In fact, tavia sills.

She's beautiful.

Tavia was not a person That got into a lot of trouble.

She showed her family That she was happy,

Regardless of what The circumstances were.

She was a really sweet person.

Family was the main priority To tavia.

She always called her mom.

I couldn't have imagined In a million years

That something like this Would happen to tavia.

Demery: While the coroner's team fishes The body out of the water,

I check with the csis,

See if they've uncovered Any evidence.

You guys coming up With anything?

Not much yet.

I'm going to continue Along the shoreline,

See what else I can find. -that's a good idea.

I'm looking for something That's glaring -- shell casings,

A sign of some sort of struggle, Some sort of instrument

Or some sort of weapon.

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it.

Trying to find evidence In a place like this

Is a flat-out pain in the ass.

It's wet. It's muddy.

There's very tall grass

That are hindering Your investigation.

And it's late at night, So it's dark.

There's not gonna be A whole lot of physical evidence

Found at that point.

The pond is Completely off the grid.

It has the cover of -- Of the woods, as well as

The tall grass and vegetation That surround the area.

Demery: there was no indication Of whether or not

She was dumped there Or she was killed there.

I was hoping the crime scene Was gonna be contained there.

It's a little more difficult When someone's dumped

Because you, in essence, Have three crime scenes --

Where it actually happened, Transportation,

And where they're found.

Detective, I've got Something over here.

Can we get Some pictures, please?

What the hell is this?

A short distance from the --

The discovery of the body, There was a fishing rod.

And the regular rod and line With the sinkers

And the hooks is just absent, And it's a piece of wood,

So it just stuck to my mind,

"Maybe children Were playing there

Or maybe it was of some Evidentiary value."

All right, you know what? Let's get this bagged up.

If there would've been A fishing rod there

That was completely rigged up

And prepared to fish Or abandoned

Or even broken, It would've made sense.

But for a fishing rod To be seemingly operable

And have a stick tied to it Is just out of place.

I believe you're spending way Too much time at a crime scene

If you stay there too long.

That just means that you Have nowhere else to go.

You don't know what to do.

And my approach is A little more humanistic.

I want to find out who knew her,

Who she was with, And, ultimately, who killed her.

Hey, let me get the address For the sills family.

I have to make this Death notification.

This family has been Suffering long enough.

Demery: these people Have been agonizing

And worrying over The loss of their child.

They got to know, And they got to know now.

There's no waiting For confirmation

Or having some sort of idea This may be her,

It may not be her.

If you know or believe, You need to tell them that.

And she's deceased.

Demery: there's a certain Finality in that statement.

It's direct.

And, ultimately, People appreciate it.

Even a second, A millisecond of agonizing is --

That's just torture.

What happened to her?

She was found Floating in a pond

By some people Who were fishing.

When demery told me That they think

That it was my daughter In that pond,

The body they had found...

...I knew it was true,

But I didn't want To believe it.

It was a moment nobody Should ever have to go through.

That kind of reminds you Of something.

There was that Look in her face.

I'd seen my grandmother With the same look.

It's very indescribable.

But if you --

If you've seen it, you know it.

In certain cases, The victim makes me think

Of what happened to my mother.

It was as if I was working For my grandmother or --

Or somebody that was Absolutely related to me.

That was the kinship that I felt With her at that time.

There was no doubt in my mind

That I was gonna find out Who killed her daughter.

It was a responsibility.

I wanted to bring Tavia's mother the justice

That my grandmother never got.

Demery: I've just told tavia sills' Family we've found

Her 18-year-old body Floating in a pond

On the east side of town.

It was a very difficult Death notification.

It became very personal.

It was almost as if I was working a case

For somebody That I knew and loved.

I'm hoping they can Provide me with a tip

That will lead me to her killer.

So, tell me a little bit About tavia.

Does she get In trouble much?

No, no. She was very responsible.

She was going to school To become a nurse.

Education was very Important to tavia.

She went on to Southern university,

Wanted to be a nurse Because she loved people.

Even when she got pregnant, Um, we rallied around her,

Figure out a way She could go to school

And still be a mom.

From this investigation, I realized that tavia

And her mother Were very close.

Green: tavia would have Been the best mother

Because she was very caring.

That's just her personality.

Do you know Who the father is?

Lamondre tucker.

Tavia's been head-over-heels For him for years.

Green: lamondre and tavia Were dating off and on

Since middle school.

And I do know That tavia did love him.

He was a really Good-looking young man.

Uh, but he was known For his football playing.

He had a great Future in football.

There were several colleges, I know, that was looking at him.

When I spoke With tavia's family,

Uh, I realized That they were just beginning

That journey of pain and --

And missing her and, you know, The shattered dreams

And the hopes that they Thought were to come.

The pain just doesn't go away.

I've lived it, so I know exactly What she was going through.

When was the last time You saw tavia?

It was three days ago.

Lamondre came by,

And, um, they went To his sister's house.

But when she didn't Come home after a while,

I got concerned, And I called the police.

Has tavia been having Any issues with anyone?

I mean, can you think of anyone Who might have wanted

To do her some harm?

No, she didn't have Any enemies, really.

But she did have Something bad happen

To her a little while ago.

What was that?

[ sighs, sniffles ]

She was raped.

She was raped?

It was awful, mama.

Demery: three months earlier, Tavia and lamondre were in a car

When some unknown males Came and carjacked them

And sexually assaulted tavia.

I couldn't see them,

But I could hear them Beating on lamondre.

And then they came For me next.

Tavia explained the guys

That were assaulting her Kicked her stomach

And made sure That they raped her,

One after the other.

-we have to go to the police. -no.

-we've got to call the police. -you can't.

-please, tavia. -you can't.

Why?

After the sexual assault, Tavia told her mother

But was reluctant To go to the police

Because I believed she feared

That those persons would Come back and do her harm.

That's why I didn't Go to the police.

She made me promise Not to tell anyone.

Demery: I thought maybe her Sexual assault

Had something to do With who murdered her.

The persons who raped her May have feared

She was Gonna say something about it

Because it wasn't Reported at the time.

This case is getting heavier By the minute.

I need to talk to the one person

Who witnessed This sexual assault --

Tavia's boyfriend, lamondre.

But first thing's first.

It's time I paid The coroner a visit.

Hey. -great timing.

I'm almost done with The sills autopsy.

Autopsies are always Difficult to witness,

But the autopsy Of a pregnant woman

Is extremely difficult.

Any sign Of sexual assault?

All of her clothes Seem intact, so no.

What about lividity?

Lividity is where The blood pools

At the lowest portion Of the body.

Gravity takes it there.

One way to determine Whether or not a body

Has been moved is where That lividity is fixed.

Once it's fixed, It stays there.

The lividity is normal.

So it's safe to say She died at the pond.

It fit the theory That tavia sills

Was murdered at that scene.

There was no indication

That the body Had been moved at all.

The autopsy showed There were three gunshot wounds.

Two appeared To be more superficial.

The other gunshot wound actually Went through her body,

Um, hit the fifth rib,

Collapsed the lung, and rested Inside the body cavity.

And it was the fatal shot.

.40 caliber.

Oh, yeah.

The fatal wound was recovered From the body of tavia sills --

A .40-caliber projectile, Most likely from a handgun.

To tavia sills And her unborn baby.

Now it's up to me to find Justice for her family.

I'm on the hunt For a vicious killer.

So you guys were Seeing other people.

So lamondre tucker Had another girlfriend

He was on and off with,

And he had a 2-year-old child With her.

Lamondre had Parenting experience.

Him and his mom Had the baby a lot.

He was crazy about his son.

You know, Parenting ain't easy.

But I was looking forward To having another kid.

Lamondre appeared to be A very good young father.

I think it had to be Pretty difficult for Someone that young,

But he seemed to have Had it figured out.

I understand that you were with Tavia the night she got raped.

It was one of the worst Times of my life.

Picked her up to, um -- To go to david raines park.

And we pulled over On this dirt road

To, you know, Talk about the baby.

Sills: what are we gonna name This baby of ours?

Unknown guys came up to the car,

Unknown to both of them,

And essentially Carjacked them.

These two guys pulled both Of us out of the car.

Tavia's blindfolded,

And the other guy's Just punching on me.

There was a cloth Over my eyes,

And I could just Hear her screaming.

Tavia! -don't move!

Sills: stop! No, I'm pregnant!

Please, no!

No!

Aah!

Get off, no!

They were pretty much Just taking turns on her.

It was... [ scoffs ]

There was nothing I could do, man.

Demery: It's a gruesome story,

But my job is to figure out

How this rape factors Into tavia's murder.

It was very difficult For me to believe

That this was a random Act of violence.

It just didn't fit.

Um, it's not often that Something like this happens.

You were with tavia The night she disappeared.

Yes. She asked me To drop her off

At her sister's apartment.

So I drove her straight there. I dropped her right off.

You know, That was it.

Okay. Tavia's family said --

Her sister said She didn't see tavia.

So I asked him Where he dropped her off.

And to be specific, he mentioned

That he dropped her off By the mailboxes.

He says that his friend, Charles clark,

Saw him drop tavia off At the apartment complex.

Did you watch her Walk into the complex?

No. I, um, I pulled off. I --

I realized I never saw her again.

So at this point, all we know Is that he dropped her off.

Where she went afterwards Was up in the air.

Whether she was abducted Or she willingly left

With someone, I don't know.

As lamondre's Giving me the story,

I'm starting to have less

And less confidence In what he's telling me.

It's just starting to seem A little too manufactured

At this point.

All killers are liars.

It's just part of the game -- Self-preservation.

But just because some kid Like lamondre can't tell me

What happened to his girlfriend After he dropped her off,

Doesn't mean He's shining me on.

What I do know is that I need to check out

That apartment complex.

The video tapes Showed no evidence

That lamondre or tavia

Were ever at that Apartment complex --

No car, no tavia, no lamondre,

No additional suspects.

Now, the question is,

Why lamondre wouldn't Be telling me the truth?

Is telling me the truth About the night his girlfriend,

Tavia, was murdered.

Lamondre told me That his friend, charles clark,

Saw him drop tavia off At the apartment complex.

And I just thought It was weird.

The fact that lamondre tried To manipulate clark

Into lying and manufacture A story makes me more curious.

How were lamondre And tavia getting along?

I'm not sure.

But I know that Lamondre is in love

With his girlfriend, Tamara.

He has a kid with her. He wants to be with tamara,

But that relationship Is all messed up

Because tamara found out

That lamondre got Tavia pregnant.

According to clark, After lamondre's girlfriend

Broke up with him,

Lamondre was even more angry About tavia being pregnant.

I can not have This baby, man.

There's really nothing You can do.

It's up to her now.

Not if I got Anything to do with it.

What are you Talking about, man?

Lamondre told you

That he wanted tavia To get rid of the baby?

I immediately thought About the rape case and realized

That lamondre may have, Indeed, set that up.

The way I'm looking at it,

Lamondre staged The assault against tavia,

Hoping it'd cause her To lose the baby,

And he'd come off Looking like the victim

Rather than The crime's mastermind.

And if he was capable of that,

He'd certainly Be capable of murder.

So now I'm really concerned

Whether or not lamondre Actually planned this.

You know, this is somebody That needs to be taken out.

I got to get him.

I'm going to hunt lamondre down

And personally escort him To the station.

I walk lamondre into The interrogation room,

And that's when The switch flips.

This is myturf Where we play mygame.

It's clear to me that He thinks he's in charge.

He thinks he has All this under control

And he has it all figured out.

But now lamondre's Met his match.

He's met something That he can't control.

And that something is me.

Demery is really In a league of his own

When it comes to interrogating.

He's able to connect With the suspects on a level

That no investigator I've ever Worked with is able to do.

His response was, "Are you kidding?"

And I stare at him And I let him know,

"No, I'm not kidding."

I tried several different Approaches with lamondre.

I wanted to find out What made him emotional.

I wanted to find out What made him lose control,

What his fears were, What his insecurities were.

They weren't apparent, And then it hits me.

It was his girlfriend. It shook him.

And once I realized that, I exploited it.

He visibly became shaken. He started to cry.

Everybody that you interview Is gonna confess

If you know where to tap.

Lamondre has now put himself

As the person That was holding the gun,

Whether accidental or Purposefully, that killed her.

There's no way out for him now. There's no turning back.

His job now is to sell me A story of an accident.

The problem with the story

Is that she's got Three gunshot wounds.

So I know that lamondre's story Is not true.

Lamondre said that he decided To take the gun

And get rid of it.

I don't call lamondre out On the inconsistencies

And how many gunshot Wounds and what I know.

I tell lamondre that I'm gonna Check out everything

That he's giving me to check out And go to the pond.

But me heading back To the crime scene

Isn't just for show.

My gut tells me there's Still evidence to be found.

Our crime scene guys arrive and They try to get in the water,

See -- see if they can Find the gun.

And I'm feeling pretty good About what's going on now.

Any luck finding These shell casings?

I'm looking For three of them.

Well, The grass is too high.

We're gonna have to do Something about the grass.

Let me make a phone call.

I called the city Maintenance department

And they gave me Every reason under the sun

To why they couldn't Come out there.

But ultimately, I'm able to sweet-talk them.

Listen to me. I don't need them tomorrow.

I need to get someone Here today.

The maintenance department Sent out several city workers,

And they cut the grass.

They sifted through the grass That was cut to find out

If there were any shell casings.

And all of a sudden...

-I think I got something. -really?

Great. Make sure you don't touch it.

We went over,

And it was a shell casing From a .40-caliber pistol.

Right after that, the other two Shell casings were found.

It was a beautiful moment.

We found physical evidence

That directly relates To the death of tavia sills.

The shell casings were critical.

What I really want to find Is the murder weapon.

When divers are searching For this firearm,

I'm sitting on the side,

Watching this whole thing Take place.

There was that uneasiness

That maybe these guys Can't find it.

The diver comes up Out of the water.

I'm watching this guy.

He's holding a firearm In his hand.

And I said, "Yeah. We've got it."

I knew it was a .40-caliber. It was a good day.

Let me take this call. -okay.

-this is demery. -hi, detective.

They tell me that Lamondre wants me

To come back to the jail

Because he has to give me Some more information.

My thought is he knows that His story is falling apart,

So I'm anxious to see What he has to say.

Let him know I'm on my way.

"Lamondre, why do you Want to talk to me?

Do you want to tell me What really happened?

'cause I'm all ears."

Demery: my mother was murdered On a thursday.

We buried her on a saturday.

I remember very little From that time in my life.

But the pain I experienced as a child

Instilled in me a burning desire

To put killers behind bars.

At this point, I've got lamondre Exactly where I want him.

I'm gonna let him tell me again How he accidentally shot tavia.

Then I'm gonna confront him With the evidence.

"Lamondre, you do realize That I found the shell casings?

We've examined the body From head to toe."

Now we're getting somewhere.

His story Of accidental discharge

Is just shattered at this point.

You don't shoot someone three Times and it be an accident.

He decided to tell me that it Just wasn't he and tavia,

That his buddy, Marcus taylor, was with them.

He explained how marcus Supplied the gun.

Marcus: yeah, Y'all are just mad.

How 'bout you do that? You catch a girl.

Fish don't even Want you, marcus.

Did you just...

Demery: this is all designed To catch tavia off guard.

She's supposed to think Everything's okay.

She's supposed to think She's in good hands.

Meanwhile, these two Are trying to figure out

A way to kill her by surprise.

This whole thing was planned.

Lamondre wanted To kill tavia sills.

He wanted to kill Tavia sills' unborn child.

It's simple as that.

But my boy lamondre, He still wants to play games,

Still making it out like this Is some big accident.

There's no need for me

To continue to listen To any more lies.

There's no need for Me to continue to Entertain his whining.

I snag that jerry-rigged Fishing rod

From the evidence room.

When marcus came in the room,

The first thing he saw Was the fishing rod.

I'm watching him now. I'm watching his body language.

I watch how his head drops, How he seems deflated.

I know at this point,

Marcus is gonna tell me Whatever I want to know.

He's caught.

I don't know Where to start.

Did you give lamondre That gun?

Yeah.

I gave it to him.

He's been talking About killing tavia

And the baby For a while.

When we got to the lake,

I was supposed to, you know, Pretend to be fishing.

I realized I didn't have Any bait
