So my immediate thought was,

But for me,
When it came to work,

The choice wasn't really
A choice at all.

Homicide was the thing
That I was devoted to.

Homicide was like my wife.

Everything else in life
Was just a mistress.

By the time I get to the scene,

It's already awash
In blue lights.

We have a female, uh,
Facedown in the water.

I have two officers
Down there

With the body right now.

-we got an I.D. On the victim?
-no, we do not.

We've got here.

As I get closer,
I noticed the decomposition.

I felt she had been
In the water for --

For quite some time.

The first thing that I noticed

About her body
Was the gunshot wound,

And that was to her back.

It was clear that
She didn't just drown.

She didn't just
Slip into the water.

It wasn't a suicide attempt.
It was a murder.

All right.
Let's flip her.

She's pregnant.

There's no question about it.

Even though the body's
Inflated or larger

Than normal, proportionally,

It still looked
As she was pregnant.

Parents said she was wearing

When she went missing,

Right down to

Particularly, almost like
A fingerprint,

That she had on black sneakers

That were low-quarter reeboks.

It's just too specific.

It was clear that this was,
In fact, tavia sills.

She's beautiful.

Tavia was not a person
That got into a lot of trouble.

She showed her family
That she was happy,

Regardless of what
The circumstances were.

She was a really sweet person.

Family was the main priority
To tavia.

She always called her mom.

I couldn't have imagined
In a million years

That something like this
Would happen to tavia.

Demery:
While the coroner's team fishes
The body out of the water,

I check with the csis,

See if they've uncovered
Any evidence.

A sign of some sort of struggle,

There's very tall grass

She was dumped there
Or she was killed there.

I was hoping the crime scene
Was gonna be contained there.

It's a little more difficult
When someone's dumped

Because you, in essence,
Have three crime scenes --

Where it actually happened,
Transportation,

And where they're found.

The discovery of the body,
There was a fishing rod.

And the regular rod and line
With the sinkers

And the hooks is just absent,
And it's a piece of wood,

Or maybe it was of some
Evidentiary value."

If there would've been
A fishing rod there

That was completely rigged up

And prepared to fish
Or abandoned

It would've made sense.

To be seemingly operable

And, ultimately, who killed her.

It became very personal.

It was almost as if
I was working a case

That I knew and loved.

About tavia.

Does she get
In trouble much?

No, no.
She was very responsible.

She was going to school
To become a nurse.

Education was very
Important to tavia.

She went on to
Southern university,

Wanted to be a nurse
Because she loved people.

Even when she got pregnant,
Um, we rallied around her,

Figure out a way
She could go to school

And still be a mom.

From this investigation,
I realized that tavia

And her mother
Were very close.

Green: tavia would have
Been the best mother

Because she was very caring.

That's just her personality.

Do you know
Who the father is?

Lamondre tucker.

Tavia's been head-over-heels
For him for years.

Green: lamondre and tavia
Were dating off and on

Since middle school.

And I do know
That tavia did love him.

He was a really
Good-looking young man.

Uh, but he was known
For his football playing.

He had a great
Future in football.

There were several colleges,
I know, that was looking at him.

When I spoke
With tavia's family,

Uh, I realized
That they were just beginning

That journey of pain and --

And missing her and, you know,
The shattered dreams

And the hopes that they
Thought were to come.

The pain just doesn't go away.

I've lived it, so I know exactly
What she was going through.

When was the last time
You saw tavia?

It was three days ago.

Lamondre came by,

And, um, they went
To his sister's house.

But when she didn't
Come home after a while,

I got concerned,
And I called the police.

Has tavia been having
Any issues with anyone?

I mean, can you think of anyone
Who might have wanted

To do her some harm?

No, she didn't have
Any enemies, really.

But she did have
Something bad happen

To her a little while ago.

What was that?

[ sighs, sniffles ]

She was raped.

She was raped?

It was awful, mama.

Demery: three months earlier,
Tavia and lamondre were in a car

When some unknown males
Came and carjacked them

And sexually assaulted tavia.

I couldn't see them,

But I could hear them
Beating on lamondre.

And then they came
For me next.

Tavia explained the guys

That were assaulting her
Kicked her stomach

And made sure
That they raped her,

One after the other.

-we have to go to the police.

Why?

After the sexual assault,
Tavia told her mother

But was reluctant
To go to the police

Because I believed she feared

That those persons would
Come back and do her harm.

That's why I didn't
Go to the police.

She made me promise
Not to tell anyone.

Demery: I thought maybe her
Sexual assault

Had something to do
With who murdered her.

The persons who raped her
May have feared

She was
Gonna say something about it

Because it wasn't
Reported at the time.

This case is getting heavier
By the minute.

I need to talk to the one person

Who witnessed
This sexual assault --

Tavia's boyfriend, lamondre.

But first thing's first.

It's time I paid
The coroner a visit.

Autopsies are always
Difficult to witness,

But the autopsy
Of a pregnant woman

The autopsy showed
There were three gunshot wounds.

To be more superficial.

The other gunshot wound actually
Went through her body,

Um, hit the fifth rib,

Collapsed the lung, and rested
Inside the body cavity.

And it was the fatal shot.

.40 caliber.

The fatal wound was recovered
From the body of tavia sills --

A .40-caliber projectile,
Most likely from a handgun.

It just didn't fit.

So at this point, all we know

You know, this is somebody
That needs to be taken out.

I'm going to hunt lamondre down

The interrogation room,

And that's when
The switch flips.

It's clear to me that
He thinks he's in charge.

He thinks he has
All this under control

And he has it all figured out.

But now lamondre's
Met his match.

He's met something
That he can't control.

And that something is me.

Demery is really
In a league of his own

When it comes to interrogating.

He's able to connect
With the suspects on a level

That no investigator I've ever
Worked with is able to do.

His response was,
"Are you kidding?"

And I stare at him
And I let him know,

"No, I'm not kidding."

I tried several different
Approaches with lamondre.

I wanted to find out
What made him emotional.

I wanted to find out
What made him lose control,

What his fears were,
What his insecurities were.

They weren't apparent,
And then it hits me.

It was his girlfriend.
It shook him.

And once I realized that,
I exploited it.

He visibly became shaken.
He started to cry.

Everybody that you interview
Is gonna confess

If you know where to tap.

Lamondre has now put himself

As the person
That was holding the gun,

Whether accidental or
Purposefully, that killed her.

There's no way out for him now.
There's no turning back.

His job now is to sell me
A story of an accident.

The problem with the story

Is that she's got
Three gunshot wounds.

So I know that lamondre's story
Is not true.

Lamondre said that he decided
To take the gun

And get rid of it.

I don't call lamondre out
On the inconsistencies

And how many gunshot
Wounds and what I know.

I tell lamondre that I'm gonna
Check out everything

That he's giving me to check out
And go to the pond.

But me heading back
To the crime scene

Isn't just for show.

My gut tells me there's
Still evidence to be found.

Our crime scene guys arrive and
They try to get in the water,

See -- see if they can
Find the gun.

And I'm feeling pretty good
About what's going on now.

And they cut the grass.

They sifted through the grass
That was cut to find out

If there were any shell casings.

And all of a sudden...

From a .40-caliber pistol.

Right after that, the other two
Shell casings were found.

It was a beautiful moment.

We found physical evidence

That directly relates
To the death of tavia sills.

The shell casings were critical.

What I really want to find
Is the murder weapon.

When divers are searching
For this firearm,

I'm sitting on the side,

Watching this whole thing
Take place.

There was that uneasiness

That maybe these guys
Can't find it.

The diver comes up
Out of the water.

I'm watching this guy.

He's holding a firearm
In his hand.

And I said, "Yeah.
We've got it."

I knew it was a .40-caliber.
It was a good day.

They tell me that
Lamondre wants me

To come back to the jail

Because he has to give me
Some more information.

My thought is he knows that
His story is falling apart,

So I'm anxious to see
What he has to say.

What really happened?

'cause I'm all ears."

Demery: my mother was murdered
On a thursday.

We buried her on a saturday.

I remember very little
From that time in my life.

But the pain
I experienced as a child

Instilled in me a burning desire

To put killers behind bars.

At this point, I've got lamondre
Exactly where I want him.

How he accidentally shot tavia.

Then I'm gonna confront him
With the evidence.

A way to kill her by surprise.

This whole thing was planned.
