for nearly 30 years we've been proud to

provide the energy that helps public

television run

in 1788 the African slave trade was

dominated by Britain and France

in fact it was one of the most

profitable businesses in England

the American Revolution had ended just a

few years earlier

and while the United States was an

important buyer of slaves it was not a

major Trader

it wasn't even the biggest buyer

the really big buyers were Brazil and

the European colonies in the Caribbean

whose Plantation economies were built on

masses of slave labor

here's how the trade worked

British merchants sent ships to West

Africa with cheap manufactured goods

and traded them for people

who were then transported across the

Atlantic in conditions of unspeakable

horror

after selling his human cargo the trader

used the money to buy new world luxuries

things like sugar and tobacco that

brought big profits back in Europe

a businessman with no Scruples about

buying and selling human beings

could quickly become very rich

at the time of tonight's story 1788

there's the beginning of an abolition

movement in Britain the slavery trade is

booming however and big profits tend to

silence squeamish complaints about how

the money is made

as long as slavery was profitable

English businessmen insisted it was a

respectable trade

our story which we're presenting in two

parts is based on a novel by Philippa

Gregory

the settings Bristol the major center of

the slave trade

into Bristol's greedy middle class

Society comes Francis Scott

she's a well-born but unfortunately

penniless young lady of the landed

aristocracy

her society looks with contempt on

people in business

to them trade of any sort is vulgar

however

a woman with no inheritance

no matter how well-born

cannot be picky

a respectable trade
