A lot of parents to this day don't like me

because I turned their kids on to skiing.

♪ And I tore up the shirt
and I ate up the sleeves ♪

I Never really considered myself as a bum

because the whole time I was
living in the parking lots,

I was drawing cartoons.

I wrote three books while
I was in the parking lot.

I never even considered that it wasn't

and I never considered that it was.

It's what I love to do

just like you'd like to take pictures.

We soon realized it's
particularly at Sun Valley

that the management considered
Warren and I local color.

They thought, gosh, I want to
talk to these two crazy guys

that are living in the parking lot.

And you're laying there

and the window's right
here outside is right there

and you look out and
see the stars and Orion

and just nothing could have been better.

The cafeteria, I thought, boy,

that'd really be a keen
place to paint murals.

So I went to Pappy Rogers
and told him my idea.

I said, "I'll trade
you for a season pass."

He said, "Okay, you got a deal.

And by the way,

why don't just eat your
three meals a day there

as long as you're painting the murals."

Took me all winter to paint the murals.

I painted them very slowly.

(When I Was Done Dying continues)

And when I'm gone I'll pull a lid open

and say, "Did you get the
closeup in the cutaways?"

we're gonna take another 20 minute break.

- [Narrator] A night out in Rossland, BC,

is like a night out in any ski town.

Great music, fun times

and lots of good looking people

who only get better looking
as the night goes on.

(rock music playing)

But there's a flip side to all the fun

and Rossland is lucky to
have a crew of local heroes

who do the hard work of keeping
people safe on a mountain

that doesn't exactly make their job easy.

We came to ride with
a few of it's members,

Duncan Browning,

Jill Magney,

and Andrew Duncan

♪ Who wants to dance,
who wants to slow dance ♪

- A fantastic community to be
part of with a bunch of dogs

that crap all over the trails.

And if that's the biggest problem in town,

then I think we're doing pretty well.

♪ I want a chance, I want to slow dance ♪

- Ski patrol is my free time.

When I'm not working ski patrol,

I have three kids.

Six, three, and a year and a half.

Raising them in the ski town.

♪ Lipstick like dynamite ♪

♪ Seven sticks of dynamite ♪

- [Duncan] Very tightly knit
group of ski patrollers here.

Yeah, just cliche, but they are my family.

It's pretty clear who the lifers are

and who leaves after a year.

Pretty obvious like anything
else in a small town,

if they don't fit in, they don't fit in.

- [Andrew] You start wrapping
your shots in the morning

and things get serious.

We keep each other safe up
there, I trust any of them.

- We gonna do the coolest.
We're going take seven.

Seven should do the trick.

♪ To that racket down the hall
that racket down the hall ♪

- Thirteen plus.

Cab drivers are saying it's kind of slaby.

Pretty reactive,

so we're gonna chuck
some bombs in some shoots

and we're gonna rock and roll.

(dynamite exploding)

- [Jill] When I first moved to Rossland,

I started as a volunteer ski patroller,

so I decided that I was
going to prove myself.

(dynamite exploding)

I had the knowledge to perform the skills

that I needed to perform,

was able to show that I
was dedicated to the team

- [Dynamite Expert] Fire
in the whole super cooler.

- [Jill] I get a lot of
enjoyment out of the suffering.

It's kind of weird but...

- [Andrew] Snow's looking
good, let's open the mountain.

Have fun skiing guys.

- [Duncan] The outdoors, having fun

and you getting to ski and hike

and this community sports
app gets behind that.

- To be a ski patroller,

you can't be one thing or the other.

You gotta be able to adapt,
react to different situations.

And you got to like sliding on snow.

And you gotta be pretty
good at it ideally.

- [Narrator] Andrew spends his summers

as a parks Canada ranger.

- Ten seconds.

- [Narrator] Duncan grew up
in England skiing on plastic,

but if BC powder is all he
can get, he'll make due.

(dynamite exploding)

Jill is the newbie on the team.

- I was the lucky recipient
of the auger this week

and you have to put $5 into a beer fund.

Even worse because I got augered on film

so I'm expected to put
$10 in the jar, not five.

But since then it's been passed
on to a different patroller

and he augered yesterday.

- They open it up and then
they don't wanna ski it first.

Rossland is truly a ski town

where the people that come
to live here and stay here,

it's because they love these mountains.

There's all these layers of stories

that make it's such a
cool tapestry of people

- [Narrator] Joining Olympian
Kaylin Richardson on this trip

are a couple of new friends,

free ski champion Dennis Risvoll of Norway

and Red Mountain local
phenom, Simon Hillis.

- [Kaylin] Simon Hillis
is the key to the city.

Velvet ropes up, oh go
ahead, get on the chairlift,

like come on in.

And it was really fun to
see someone that is so young

that the community has so much pride in.

I've been putting ski boots on for ages.

Thousands of times.

And the cool thing is is that,

it's something that the
moment I slip them on,

there's this switch that flips

where this is where I'm happiest.

I loved during my time here
just to take it all in.

- [Skier] Red Mountains has, yeah,

looks like everybody's skiing.

Everybody that lives in
town or our skiers almost,

it's almost like my hometown.

I think it's a good tradition.

♪ I want to sit on the moon ♪

♪ A pie in the sky ♪

♪ In my minds eye ♪

♪ I want to sit on the moon ♪

- [Skier 2] Growing up in
Rossland is really good.

It's a really supportive community

and it's really close to the ski hill.

- [Kaylin] In every ski town I go to,

you meet these kindred spirits.

I don't know, it's like a secret handshake

of the skiing community where
it's like, yeah, you and me.

♪ The lights were out on Houston ♪

♪ And empty streets betrayed the sound ♪

♪ Of leaves and stones held singing ♪

♪ The hand we held still holds us down ♪

- So I've been a ski bum
for about eight years

and when I moved to Rossland

I really felt a different vibe.

I felt like the community
just welcomed me in.

♪ But oh the smoke's still breathing ♪

♪ From ashes firm beneath our feet ♪

♪ Like hope still unforgotten ♪

♪ And grass that grows
where once lay streets ♪

♪ The house that keeps out secrets ♪

♪ The floor that bore out humble steps ♪

♪ These walls like arms embrace us ♪

♪ The door we smashed to get back in ♪

♪ We will run back home ♪

Simon is the age that I was
when I made the US ski team.

It brought me back when I
was on the national team.

It was fun to look at him
and know the next 10 years

he's just gonna have a ball.

- [Narrator] A lot of this terrain

would be roped off at other resorts,

but Red Mountain is a
different kind of place

owned by a collective of real skiers.

- Anything can change,
there's a lot of variables.

As time goes on, the town can change,

the ski hill can change, but
the terrain can't change.

And that's kinda what
things that people here

who've been coming here for a long time

and who choose to live here.

And so I think there's always
gonna be a real core scene

of real skiers here.

- [Jill] Warren Miller
has affected so many lives

and he's affected so many
lives that have affected mine.

To be a part of something
he created is such an honor.

And trying to look at
the world like he did

just a little bit in that
adventure is worth pursuing.

And here at Red Mountain
it seems like everyone here

loves the same thing.

- Here we go, 20 years.

Would've never thought
my wildest imagination

we'd make 20 years as
a heli-ski operation.

So many memories, so many highlights,

15 years of Warren Miller.

It's a celebration, it's incredible.

- [Narrator] Kevin Quinn
has lots of reasons

to love his job.

Among them, meeting new
friends like Jim Ryan

and Dash Longe.

- [Kevin] I've seen Points
North Heli so many times

in the Warren Miller movies

that getting here is kind of surreal.

- [Dash] Those moments in those films

that stuck with me my whole life,

these faces out here are iconic.

Dan Treadway and Hugo Harrison

showing us how it's done.

Well, let's just start
talking about Micah Kralier.

Kent flashing the Sphinx
in less than 20 seconds.

That was a pretty
monumental moment in skiing.

And then Micah skiing the
fin right next to that.

- [Kevin] He wasn't afraid
to admit he was scared.

He performed it anyways.

- [Dash] That's as good as he gets.

The story goes at Seth
Wescott decided to come here

after he had won his gold medal

and this was his way of celebrating.

That was really cool.

- Our very first Warren Miller film

that was a celebration in itself,

being able to say "Holy smokes,

Warren Miller's coming to
film Charlotte Modes, Jen Berg

and my wife, Jessica Storm."

I mean that was the
first Warren Miller film

we were part of.

And from there they
just started to unfold.

- [Dash] The Chrisp
Brothers, Zach and Reggie.

- [Kevin] One that really stands out to me

is Kevin Bramble, Monty Meyer,

getting waist deep conditions.

Man that segment, they blew minds.

- I'm just one little part in the middle

of this evolution of skiing in Alaska.

The coolest figures in skiing in my mind,

Ingrid Backstrom and Jess McMillan,

they kind of closed down the Sphinx.

Rip that thing in minimal turns,

that was as sick as it gets.

I think it's a rite of passage for a skier

to be able to get to AK

and ski some of these insane
lines that you've seen

and you've grown up watching.

- Twenty years ago,

this young fellow by
the name of Kevin Quinn

comes and knocks on my door.

- He probably thought I
was just some knucklehead.

- He was going like, "Yeah,

I'm gonna start, you know,
a heli-skiing operation."

- He raised an eyebrow and said, "Yeah,

I think we could do something."

- I saw it like these
nice long glacier runs

that were just beautiful
and flat as could be.

He was looking at what looked to me

like straight up and down cliffs

so I had a lot to learn about
what they were gonna do here.

- Did some pretty wild country up here.

I can just imagine what it
was like in the beginning.

- When I met Kevin, he had
just done his first season

and he convinced me to
come up here that summer

that he had two bedrooms with two beds

and I'd make a ton of money.

I was 21 years old so I listened to him.

I came up, little did I
know there was one bedroom

with one bed and 20 years later,

you can figure out what happened.

When I met him,

I don't even think I knew
what helicopter skiing was,

let alone Alaska.

- [Kevin] She's really made
Points North what it is.

- [Jessica] I didn't even
know what powder was.

- I think Kevin said it best in '05.

Something about the odds
being good and I don't know,

it's pretty odd that
the odds will be good.

- Alaska, where the goods are odd

and the odds are good
that you'll get the goods

and the goods are good.

Did I already say that?

- A lot of people say in Alaska

that the goods are odd just
due to the weather factor.

But I can tell you when
the weather works out,

the goods are good and the odds are good

that you're gonna get the goods

just for the sake that
there's no place like it.

- That is the most confusing quote ever.

It's hard to forget that
I'm the rookie here.

Lots of pats on the back
saying, "How you doing, rookie?"

- [Dash] When we first got off
the plane he looked nervous.

He's never been heli-skiing.

He's never shot for a ski movie.

- A lot of these guys you see up here,

you know, it's like it's year 12

and they're coming back for a reason.

It's gotta be a good one.

I like to think that they
were a little nervous

'cause I'm a little nervous.

- [Kevin] We're just
gonna fly 'em out there

and drop 'em off on some real nar.

- [Dash] Skiing these lines
in AK is that salvation

that you've worked towards your whole life

and once you had a taste,

you come back for more
'cause it's so good.

Then again, I'm a skier and
all I wanna do is ski. So.

♪ But the ones who stop you

And when I think about it,

it's really just these moments,

these little moments that carry with us.

They're like little placeholders

and until you get to come up here

and fill those in, you know,

just one little memory at a time.

- [Jim] I think there's
something cool about a place

where you don't know what you're gonna get

but you know it's gonna be something

and you know that it's gonna be

one of the stronger
experiences of your life

and you have to take it on faith.

- [Kevin] I remember
growing up in Anchorage,

going to Warren Miller ski films.

It was like the celebration of winter.

Warren was up on the stage
narrating and we miss you.

We think about you, we celebrate life

because of you Warren,
thank you so much, man.

- [Narrator 2] Something
ski people can all do is

slow down just a little bit.

Go ski touring and look around.

(peaceful music)

- [Narrator] Slow down and
look around, not these guys.

- [Narrator] August is the heart of winter

on New Zealand's South island,

and the US cross country ski team

is here to make the most of it.

- Skiers are made in the
spring and the summer.

Having the opportunity to get on snow

and work together here as a team is huge.

- It's mid-winter conditions
here, which is awesome.

It really helps prepare us for the season.

♪ Here we come ♪

♪ Don't know what ♪

♪ We're running from ♪

- What's up guys?

Yep, nice dude. Good work.

Yeah, him, race faster
than a week or two ago.

- Put kind of back on
your heels a little bit.

- Our job as coaches is really
to break these athletes down.

If they tell us they're tired,

that's when we start succeeding.

- [Narrator] Coach Matt
Wickham and his staff

are actually pretty nice guys,

but they wanna win and winning takes work.

- Spring racing, it's a little
bit like NASCAR with spandex.

- [Narrator] That's Aspen's Simi Hamilton.

And yeah, people only
wanna see the crashes.

- I can't imagine any job I'd want more

than being a professional
cross country skier.

I love racing and competing
and being part of a team.

- [Narrator] Jessie Diggins gets it.

She knows about teamwork,
she knows about dedication,

and she knows what it takes to win.

On the wall of her Minnesota bedroom,

a teenage Jessie Diggins
had a poster of her hero,

Alaska's Kikkan Randall.

At Pyeongchang, Jessie and Kikkan

would pair up for the women's team sprint.

- A huge part of success
in cross country is being,

it's all in your head

because you can have all
the talent in the world,

but if you are not
willing to push yourself

all the way to your limits,

it's not going to be enough.

I was so focused

and it was like someone
had turned the volume down

and I didn't hear the crowd,

and it was like nothing else existed.

After I passed the line,

I was like, did we just win the Olympics?

Did that really just happen?

And that's when I realized what it is

that we had all accomplished
together as a team.

Because you can't do it
without coaches and wax techs

and staff and teammates
pushing you in training.

Everyone on this team

knows that they are a part of that medal

and that it belongs to them too.

- Nice dig.

to legalize weirdness.

Until there is though,

Rob Kingwell and Seth Wescott
know just where to go,

high in Washington state's cascade range

when life starts feeling
a little too normal.

- So my first trip for Baker was in '96

and I got a random ride
up here with this guy

that was passing people the whole way.

Total sketchy trip, I can't
remember who the dude was.

This was the event

where you basically got to
race against your heroes.

- There's a lot of history here.

So many facets that are
important to snowboarding

and just important to your soul.

- [Seth] The early years there was a group

called the Mount Baker Hardcore

and Craig Kelly was the ringleader of it.

- [Rob] Just this free-spirited
badass snowboarder

that inspired our whole
generation for sure.

- [Seth] We won the
Mount Baker bank slalom

a whole bunch of times

and so there's always
this sense of feeling

like this whole week is a tribute
to Craig in a lot of ways.

It's the oldest running
event in snowboarding.

It started in 1985.

Everyone still comes
from all over the world

and it still has that drop.

- [Rob] Surrounded by this
really true snowboard vibe.

- [Seth] Like a who's who
of the all time greats

of snowboarding.

- [Rob] Duct tape is a
symbol of our heritage

and the roots of snowboarding.

When I started, we literally
had to use duct tape

to make our boots work
to keep our bindings on.

- [Seth] The mother of all
invention in snowboarding.

- [Rob] If you were a snowboarder,

it just was part of the kit.

- [Seth] That's the way
that they attach the bibs

and just part of the tribute to duct tape

being an early form of
innovation in snowboarding.

- [Announcer] Racer ready!

- [Narrator] How do they get 400 racers

down the same course in a day?

About 10 seconds apart, no
time for self-reflection.

- One, go.

- Hello, good morning. Welcome
to the legendary bank slalom.

- Came to say hi.
- Oh hi, Tom, good morning.

- Yeah, want you here.
We all make the gates.

- It's really cool to, you know,

have started with a sport
when it was so in its infancy

and to now see the
multi-generational families

that are riding in the race,

the shared stoke and
catching up with everyone

what's been going on in their lives.

And I truly believe the most unique thing

that happens in snowboarding.

- [Narrator] As Warren always said,

"If you want it to snow, schedule a race."

- Racer ready! Three, two, one, go!

♪ We all know this is nothing ♪

♪ We all, we all, we all, we
all know this is nowhere ♪

♪ There is no one ♪

♪ Here ♪

♪ It moves like a virus
and enters our skin ♪

♪ The first sign divides us ♪

- [Rob] My strategy on
day one is cruise it.

Feel out, know the trouble spots.

Get all the bugs out of your system.

- [Narrator] Finals day
arrives with fresh snow.

Nerves are tight.

But the course is in prime condition.

- You doing it.

♪ The old guys are frightened ♪

♪ And frightening to behold ♪

♪ The kids come out fighting ♪

♪ And still doing what they're told ♪

♪ But you're waking a monster ♪

♪ That will drive you from
your hoary holes of gold ♪

- I would suggest getting high on the wall

because there's bumps and
rubble down the middle.

- [Rob] There's something special to know

you're here at Mount Baker

and just be surrounded
by all snowboarders.

You feel like you're home,

especially at the top of that course.

So many good riders

and so many people that really
love the sport snowboarding.

To think that the best
snowboarders in the world

have all challenged
themselves at the bank slalom.

Craig Kelly did it, that Terry
did it, that Seth did it.

All these incredible
champions of snowboarding's

really a cool experience for me.

♪ Your head is on fire ♪

♪ Your hands are getting weak ♪

♪ We all, we all get stupid in the heat ♪

♪ You've basted your
brains with the shatter ♪

♪ And defeat up on the street ♪

- [Seth] I still get
butterflies every time

on the morning for this one.

It's never an easy thing just
to get down top to bottom.

So battle in there.

♪ The early years were boring ♪

♪ The quiet, unhappy punk ♪

It's always a challenge.

And in some ways it's a
full on survival riding.

♪ So we do the best we can ♪

It's as organic of an
event as you can get.

(crowd cheering)

The artisans that make the
trophies and prizes every year,

it's all labor of love.

(crowd cheering)

It was more important to have
a culture around snowboarding

and just the prize money
that came into the sport.

- Throughout the history
of the bank slalom,

there's always been
these little side events

really inspired by this legend

that Terje Håkonsen rode the course switch

and backwards on snowboard.

It's called "fakie" but
it's also another name

which is riding switch.

It's been quite a few years

that we've been doing the switch race

and I decided that we
really needed a trophy

so I was like we gotta
make this a legit category.

You're going the wrong way!

Yes!

I always feel like this
is the family reunion

of snowboarding.

All these people that just
build their lives around it.

So I feel like this is my tribe.

That energy that we get here,

that stoke of riding
together, racing together,

all of us charging, trying
to win the same thing,

that silly golden duct tape trophy.

- [Announcer 2] Three, two, one, go.

- [Announcer 3] Racer

- [Narrator] In Iceland, there
are no misbehaving children

because the trolls eat them all.

(waves gently rustling)

So if Anna Segal and Amie
Engebretson wanted to go there,

I insisted that they have a chaperone.

♪ Spent 24 hours, I need
more hours with you ♪

- Coming to Iceland with
someone that you don't know,

coming on this kind of long
ski trip, an adventure,

you know, it feels a little
unknown at the beginning.

- [Narrator] Somebody
mature and responsible.

- Skioadalur.

Skididly doodle.

- And fun to be around.

Let's go.

- I've traveled the world

and to be honest, Iceland's
never been on my radar.

Staying out here on the farm

feels like I've been invited
into the Bergmenn family home.

It's really comforting

and I feel like we're assimilating

more into a Icelandic lifestyle

rather than just being outside observers.

I grew up with my
grandparents on the farm,

which is now Klaengsholle Lodge

where we run our heli-ski programs.

Basic farm boy life tending to sheep

and it came naturally
when I started skiing

that we obviously had a huge playground

right in our backyard.

- Hot springs and geysers
and waterfalls and trolls

and out the window of this beautiful barn,

the lodges that they built,

are these incredible mountains.

and this place was way
beyond what I expected,

what I imagined it would be like.

Waiting for the heli,

felt like an episode of
"The Bachelor" or something

except Amie then turned to me and said,

"Yeah, but you'd be the host."

- We didn't have the Icelandic prince,

that's all that was missing.

Was I gonna get the final rose

or was Anna gonna get the final rose?

And Johnny knew but he wouldn't tell us.

a story about two different
ways to fly in Alaska

and what two Jackson Hole
skiers discover there.

Jess McMillan and Forrest Jillson

are accustomed to big landscapes,

but as they find out Alaska
just messes with your head.

Their first stop, the Tordrillo Mountains.

- I had the weirdest dream last night.

The mountain house was like this chalet.

- Really? I had the same dream.

But I woke up at Tordrillo Mountain Lodge.

Al Pacino was there and he had beer.

- What?

♪ We took photographs of
everything we could see ♪

♪ We knew we were ♪

♪ Impervious no matter how we'd bleed ♪

♪ We never fought for breath ♪

- [Jess] We hopped in the heli,
we skied incredible lines.

Just kuwar after kuwar and
perfect snow and ribs and spines.

- [Forrest] Sounds like heaven

- [Jess] And then you do a lot of eating.

You work on your heli belly,

so you get up, you eat, you ski,

come back, you drink, you eat, you plunge,

you ski again.

- [Forrest] I almost forgot,

there was this point where
you're driving a dog sled.

You almost looked like you
knew what you were doing.

- [Jess] In the dream, I did.

Mike Overcast, another Jackson Hole local,

who built this incredible
lodge and has helicopters there

and he's game for anything.

at the back of the Sun Valley parking lot,

dream of a ski experience like this.

he might for once have

the doorstep of Denali.

- When we last saw Charles Kuralt,

he was on the road in Alaska

that is in the air in Alaska,

flying with a pilot who
specializes in landing on glaciers.

Don Shelton, a Bush
pilot, who for 25 years

flew a single engine plane

over some of Alaska's most treacherous

and beautiful mountain areas.

- The mountain is like a mad woman.

When the woman is wild,
stay away from the women.

When the mountain is wild,
stay away from the mountain.

- Why ski touring? Why do people do it?

Why do they love it?

For me, the neat part of ski touring

is losing yourself in the mountains.

and I think there's a
part of the human spirit

And Denali National Park,

there isn't a better place to do that.

Don Sheldon was the first person to fly in

and land on the Ruth Glacier.

He was here before Denali
was a national park.

He built the Sheldon Hut.

What we're doing compared
to that is laughable

compared to those guys.

They were living it.

- You're lucky the wind didn't
put you over the other side.

hearing of the legends

that led the charge into the mountains

via airplane like Don Sheldon
or on foot like Ray Genet

were doing it decades ago.

Hats off to these guys.

It's unreal. It makes my hair stand up.

- Well, I don't consider it dangerous.

I consider it a pleasure.

here for the first day

on the first flight,

had seen some pretty big
mountains along the way,

but these dwarfed everything.

Ruth Glacier was basically
straight out of a dream.

I was like starstruck.

♪ And love is a ghost that
the others can't see ♪

♪ It's a danger ♪

♪ Every shade of us
you fade down to keep ♪

♪ And in the dark, who we are, ooh ♪

♪ Gonna be the death of me ♪

- There's always one peak

that you can see off in the distance

and it's like she's always watching you,

always keeping an eye on you.

And there's something about her

always being over your
shoulder in your peripheral

that makes you wanna go
shake her hand, you know?

Go say, "Hey Denali, what's
up?" What do you have?

- [Narrator] In the mid sixties,

Don Sheldon became the
master of glacier landings

in Denali National Park.

Sheldon flew in enough lumber

to build a six-sided
hut on the Ruth Glacier

about 10 miles from what was
then known as Mount McKinley.

With the Sheldon Mountain
House as their base camp,

self-propelled adventures
like Jess and Forrest

can ski and explore deep
in the Denali wilderness.

- [Jess] Alaska's full of legends.

It's like coming to superhero camp.

All the pioneers, all
the adventurers hang out

and it's been that way for
forever as far as I can tell.

Don Sheldon was the
explorer of this range.

He claimed this little slice of land

as opposed to seeing
Alaska as just this ice cap

and, you know, forbidden land.

They saw it as the promised
land as a place for adventure

and to test yourself

and probably a little bit,
you know, lose yourself.

♪ I know I'm maybe young,
but, I got feelings too ♪

♪ And I need to do what
I feel like doing ♪

♪ I know I'm young, ♪

He got here, put his ski boots on

and it was game on for Forrest.

He didn't know if he'd
ever be back here again,

but he was gonna boot pack
up any peak, ski any line,

just savor every single
moment that he had.

♪ All the warning lights ahead ♪

- [Forrest] I had done a
little bit of glacier travel,

nothing of this type though,

where the glaciers were so huge.

You really had to have your wits about you

and assess all the risks far in advance.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

- [Forrest] You weren't just
gonna go meander anywhere

without really thinking about things.

- Nice one
- It was awesome.

- [Forrest] But it was also like, whoa,

this is unlike anything
I've ever really done.

we're not following anyone's
tracks or anything like that.

We may look at a peak and say,
hey, let's go check that out.

And there's no guarantees.

We could speak to her for
three hours over there

and the snow could be terrible,

but that's part of exploring.

- [Forrest] When I think of skiers

skiing Alaskan lines a couple decades ago,

doing all this on skinny skis, huge 210s.

And here we are out here on pontoons,

skiing the same things.

And you just think back
how those guys ever did it

is just beyond me.

♪ I was an abomination ♪

♪ And there was a call, there was a high ♪

♪ There was a heaven dawned in roses ♪

Waking up in the morning

and having the mountains
around you, greet you,

it's just otherworldly.

And I think for anybody in this world

to not be amongst the mountains,

I think they're long overdue

to come ski with us some huge peaks.

It's good medicine.

- [Jess] It's hard to
describe it until you're here.

Your imagination starts,
you know, dreaming

what would it be like?

Would I wanna climb that?

Am I strong enough? Am I tough enough?

What does it feel like to be on Denali?

- [Narrator] Most ski instructors
insist every good turn

starts with a pole plan.

Heidi Knaus, Portillo's
senior ski instructor

seems to do just fine without it.

In Portillo, Chile, American instructors,

Francesca Pavillard-Cain
and Brennan Metzler

find a way to beat the heat.

- I am so excited to
just have more winter.

I don't know why I
haven't done this earlier

because my ideal summer is winter.

- Yeah, summer's cool and all,

but I just really love snowboarding.

I'm grateful there are places
in the southern hemisphere

of this caliber.

It's just that sensation
experience that resonates with me.

Doing it in the summer is even better.

lines, endless mountains,

and you're just pinching yourself.

- [Brennan] There's so much
terrain that you can access

that you can keep hiking
further out and further out

and finding that line.

since Warren's first visit here,

but thankfully, little else has.

- [Francesca] Portillo hasn't changed

in the best way possible.

- [Narrator] Owner, Henry Purcell,

is the guardian of that legacy.

was here when I got here.

Well, it's a little cleaner
than it was when I got here.

When Warren first came here in the 1950s,

I think he really enjoyed
skiing in the summer.

- [Narrator] And while you're here,

dare to meet another Portillo icon,

the infamous Roca Jack.

- [Brennan] It's a cross
between water skiing

and sheer terror.

In a few minutes here, you
know, a thousand vert higher.

Portillo is the coolest
adult summer camp ever.

- I like skiing so much

that I'm willing to skip the summers.

I prefer the snow.

- [Narrator] Heidi and Francesca

and their Portillo colleagues

can probably make you a better skier here,

or if they can't, at
least have fun trying.

to not only have the
knowledge of what I'm doing,

We're super appreciative
of the time that we had,

but you can't help but
feel a little bit down

that the skiing might be done.

from Warren Miller films

that I saw when I was 10, 11 years old

and you see enough of 'em

and all of a sudden you're like, yeah,

I'm gonna make skiing part of my life

and well, here I am sitting
in the Andes in August.

- The idea wasn't for me to be bird.

Bird is following your own passions,

I first arrived 1997 and I've
been coming back ever since.

This place opened my mind up to explore

where my own boundary lies
and changed me as a person.

I'm from the Pyrenees,
south of the France.

Basically in the winter,
Chamonix is my base camp

and I have a van and I'm moving a lot.

I'm a kind of a modern nomad.

- I'm Kami Jacquot, I grew up in Chamonix,

and I used to be a model skier
French ski team World Cup

and I've been lucky to ski like
in many places in the world.

- [Narrator] Bird's
buddies, Bruno and Kami,

are the in congress duo who conceived

and founded their own
Chamonix base ski company.

- [Bruno] I have the luck to
traveling all around the world

and there is not any place
to compare to this place.

We are on the top of Aiguille
du Midi 4,000 meter high.

Chamonix is living on the edge.

- [Michael] Spring is the
time when the snow sticks

to those special places in the ice

and we can ride places
that we've only dreamed of.

Just coming out that ice tunnel,

it's a whole new world.

The north face of the du Midi,

you're looking 9,000 feet
down into the valley.

It's immense.

- [Kami] Chamonix is the place

where extreme skiing is born.

You imagine the courage you
need for going the place

you're not sure if it can be possible.

Scotch Schmidt of Vieira,

Pirate in the mountains.

I've always looked up to him.

Kami Jacquot, I always thought
it was funny, you know,

I was this mountain hippie
kid connecting with a guy

that looks like fashion model from Paris.

♪ With illusions of enlightenment ♪

We shared this common bond of
skiing and really living life.

- [Kami] The vibe, the energy
in Chamonix is very special.

The unlimited festival people,
they can come, they ski also.

They can have some big amazing party.

that's just been accepted and accentuated

- [Narrator] In Bird's world,

beauty and danger are constant companions.

Risk has its rewards and
sometimes consequences.

the hospital, you know,

with some broken bones,

but it could have been a lot worse.

This was really something

that woke me up to the fragility of life

and how important it is to
realize where you're at.

- [Kami] I remember when I was a kid,

some good friends of my dad,
they did some crazy thing

and they made some combination
of not only climbing

but also extreme skiing
and extreme snowboarding.

- We have to repel into the kuwar

It's 260 meter repel

and then we ski about 200
meters inside big walls,

which we need to be quick on

because there's a lot of exposure

that can drop into the kuwar.

And then we have a small repel

down to the powder fields below

and then we are full wingspan.

- You have discussions
about live happy today

because maybe tomorrow is too late.

At this time, the mountain
is really a big challenge.

People die here every winter.

You need to trust
completely about the people

because can save your life.

going on in our lives

and when you get to make
that turn in any steep place,

really everything becomes

from our regular day

here together back in 2000

and so we've ridden icy halfpipe

of wanting to go ride powder together

because we have a lot of fun doing it.

at the top of this glacier

and we had this perfect slope

that's got no tracks in front of you

and we were just so
grateful to be up there.

What Mike created here is
unparalleled from anything

that I've seen of world class places to go

and access the mountains.

- [Seth] It's right in
this perfect snow belt

surrounded by these absolutely
incredible mountains.

- [Rob] The vastness of their tenure here

and what they have to
offer, it's limitless.

- There's a lot of ways to be a ski bum

and I think Mike Wiggly
probably nailed it better

than just about anybody in the world.

- Yeah,

- I'm from Austria originally,

but I live here in
Canada now for 50 years,

so I didn't speak a word of English.

In the first Christmas,
I didn't know anybody,

but I thought I'd meet somebody

and open up the door right at midnight

and there was Bonnie
standing right in front of me

and which she said, "Happy New Year."

and we bonded right away.

- I thought he was crazy.

Just keeps moving along
in his little dream.

- But she wanted to learn to ski

and I think it was a
good move from her side

because I was not gonna give up skiing.

The first year, nobody signed up,

but I spent $10,000 of
my wife ski shop made,

so she was broke.

- Every time my store made a bit of money,

he would snap it and do a ski brochure.

- I did it again the next year

and then it really
increased, had two guests.

And then I thought,

well, this is really
booming that business year.

- I thought he was a little cuckoo.

- [Mike] Well, I was 22
years old when I met Warren

and he was a big hero for
me right from the beginning

- [Narrator 2] Here you could ski

the whole rest of your life
and never turn in a track

if you ski with Mike
Wiggly and one of his guys.

Mike and Bonnie Wiggly are two ski people

who have devoted their lives...

- He's told the world who
we are and what we do.

The biggest message is
you gotta go heli skiing.

If you don't, you'd be one
year older when you do.

- [Rob] What's cool about this place

is they fly their helicopters
into the mountains

even if it's just puking snow.

Seth and I just looked at each other

and couldn't believe how insanely
good the snow texture was.

- [Seth] Based on people's
short term memories

and how every next day of heli skiing

is the best day of heli
skiing we ever had.

But I also think the snow

is just really damn
good here all the time.

- [Rob] Has this kind of energy to it.

This magic sparkling atmosphere

- [Seth] Couldn't hurt
yourself if you tried out here

when the snow's that good.

You just take a tumble and
knock it back outta your goggles

and start over and try
to stomp the next one.

- [Rob] We both built our lives
around the art of the glide.

We're basically snowboard bums,
just like Mike is a ski bum.

- I think the sun's coming toward us.

Pack up your stuff, let's go.

Let's go back up, let's get in.

- [Narrator] Maybe Mike
is a little cuckoo.

but it's the kind of cuckoo

any powder loving free
rider would understand.

Mike's million acre corner of Monashee

and Bugaboo Mountains is hard to beat.

- Eighteen years later,

back to the first place that
I ever got to do a heli trip,

you just realized the best
friends that you create

enjoying the mountains together

are really unique relationships.

Some of the moments in life
where I feel most alive

and I really owe all of that to Warren.

You know, like these
experiences that I've had

of going to Nepal, going to Greenland,

spending more time in Japan,

other years in Alaska,
coming to places like this.

Rob and I'll joke around
when we're on the shoots,

well, if you don't do it this year,

you're gonna be one year older when you do

and some of those quotes.

But for all the generations
of people that he influenced,

he was really sincere in that.

He just wanted to show people

that it was important to take
the time in life to have fun

because if you don't, you know,

it's like, what else do you have?

- [Narrator] Maybe we
won't all get to ride

prime BC powder this year,

but Warren's philosophy

applies even on the
humblest of hometown hills.

The point is to get out
there and get after it.

- Is this gonna be
recorded? It's not clean.

Is that okay?

- [Narrator] Switzerland
is the heart of the Alps,

home of the majority of its highest peaks,

but for all that incredible beauty,

it's something else that
lures adventurous skiers here

to Engelberg, Switzerland.

Sheer excitement.

- Yeah, on time, like always.

I first came here in 2002,

I was just going here for a week.

I've been here for more than 15 years.

Yeah, I don't want to go anyplace else.

- Engelberg is this magical snow globe

that you buy at the tourist
shop at the airport,

and you shake it and it's snowing

and there's mountains
and trains everywhere.

It's Engelberg, man.

- [Narrator] If you time it right,

you might have Engelberg all to yourself .

For guys like Johann
Jansen and Marcus Caston,

the perfect playground.

- Yeah, man, I love skiing with Johann.

- I think it's really
inspiring to ski with Marcus.

In a caption a while ago,
I called him a princess,

but not in a negative way.

It's just sometimes it looks like

he just dances very
carefully down the mountain.

Five seconds later he can
just explode in this power.

He's a pretty nice guy too.

Racing is like the basic
knowledge for the Swiss people.

They might not know much
about world politics,

but they sure know about
the World Cup standings.

- Everybody watches ski racing here.

Even the farmer, you know, he said,

"Oh, you're professional skiers." Yeah.

He says, "You race World Cups." No.

He says, "You're not
a professional skier."

- [Narrator] At storied
venues like Crans-Montana,

Wengen, Adelboden and St. Moritz,

Switzerland hosts some of the World Cup's

most historic races.

- I'm anticipating some face painting,

and some drunk Europeans,
and some fast skiing,

and at least one drunk American.

Just start like what? It's pretty cool.

- [Narrator] Crans-Montana is
a peaceful, beautiful valley.

It's also one of the toughest
tests on the World Cup.

- I don't totally get
what I'm supposed to...

There's no such thing as Swiss cheese.

You say Switzerland has the best cheese.

The best part of being in Switzerland...

I dunno if I've ever
seen mountains like this.

You got the Steinberg and then Lao,

that's like Jackson
Hole on top of Snowbird.

You know, behind those
mountains there's more mountains

and they're even bigger.

It takes one lift

and you can be in the middle
of the craziest mountains.

Take you right to space.

- It feels like it takes so much effort

to get these words out.

Trying to explain my very warm feelings

for Switzerland, Engelberg,

and Warren Miller is just like...

It's like a workout
getting this stuff out.

But it's big in my heart for sure,

but it's just, it's hard for the words.

Here in Engelberg,

there's also something
that's hard to explain.

I think it's often like that with places

that you really love.

- So maybe that's the spirit
of skiing, it's eternal youth.

You get on a pair of skis and
you're forever 10 years old.

Except my knees, they're like 60.

We lived in this trailer
in the parking lot

for 18 cents a day.

You can see that I actually had hair

when I was 22 years old.
