- She wanted someone that
would give her the freedom

to be herself.

- He looked like a normal nice guy.

- [Host] But internet dating
can be a dangerous game.

- [Reporter] The mother of two
small boys reported missing

early Sunday morning.

- [Host] In the UK alone
crime linked to online dating

has risen 450% over five years.

- This is a predator's paradise.

- It's that dark side of the web

that people don't realize exists.

- [Host] These are the
real life love stories

that ended in tragedy.

- Each day she was living in fear.

- I knew that he was no angel,

but he really had me tricked.

- [Host] So how well do you really know

the person you're dating?

- She didn't stand a chance
against that monster of a man.

(dramatic music)

- The thing you need to
know about Adelaide is

that it's hailed as the city of churches,

of wine, of music, of
progressive social thought.

- Come from a culture here
of community and family,

with care and culture.

People are happy and comfortable

and everyone knows everyone up here.

- We'd not had a cyber crime before.

You had your hackers that had gone in

and raided somebody's bank account.

You had people that had
lost their identity,

but nobody used the internet
to kill until this point.

- [Reporter] A body was found in the surf

by a beach walker yesterday.

Markings in the sand suggest
there was a struggle.

(melancholy music)

- Carly was so funny as a teenager.

She used to make me laugh a lot.

I'd be house cleaning, mopping the floor,

doing all those mom things,
and she'd say to me,

"Mom, stop cleaning, come dance with me."

And so she'd put on like her favorite song

and she come out in
her long, stripey socks

and she'd want me to dance
with her around the house.

And sometimes I just used
to sit and look at her

and think, "Gosh, look at
this kid that I've created.

"How lucky am I?"

- When I first saw Carly
she was completely different

and just so much fun.

I went, "Oh my God,
this chick is so cool!"

- 'Cause she was really creative

and she didn't wanna
be like everybody else.

She wanted to have her own flair.

She'd wear the red lipstick
and have the red nails

and she'd wear the very vintage dress

and the really vintage '60s shoes.

- From the moment I met her she was always

such a kind, open-hearted person.

- [Host] 14 year old Carly
Ryan lived with her mother,

Sonya, on the outskirts of Adelaide.

- She was always so happy
and just full of life

and energy and wanting to experience.

She's going on 15 and the
world was right in front of her

and she wanted to do all kinds of things,

kind of limitless possibilities.

- [Host] Like most teenagers her age,

Carly wanted to try new things.

- When Carly Ryan was 14 years old,

she got involved with a group of friends

that were a bit more experimental.

Unfortunately for Carly that
meant alcohol poisoning,

and she ended up in
hospital very, very ill.

She came out of hospital and
she said to her mother, Sonya,

"I don't want to be around those friends,

"I don't wanna be drinking,

"I don't wanna be a part of that scene."

- [Host] Carly turned to
the internet searching

for new friends.

- When you're a teenager and you're trying

to find yourself and
you're unsure of things

and it's hard to make friends,

internet's a great platform to communicate

with other people on.

- She'd show me, "Mom, I can
talk to three friends at once."

She thought it was
fantastic that they could

have conversations
together and share things.

- I first came into contact with Carly,

I was speaking to my best friend.

She found Carly's profile on a website

and Carly had a lot of the
same things in common with us.

Anyway, I sent her a message
and introduced myself

and we just started chatting.

- Carly came to me one day and said,

"I've met this really lovely girl!"

They had this instant connection,

they had a really good
friendship out of it.

So there was lots of positivity happening

around these kinds of connections.

- It was 2006 and it was,
I guess, the first phase

onto social media where it
all sort of began really.

This is the spot where I
very first ever met Carly

after talking online for a few weeks.

And Carly just came
running down this path here

and just jumped, hugged me,
and didn't even say anything

and just really took me by surprise.

And that's just the type
of person that she was.

So full of life and happy
and just lovely, lovely girl.

- Social media was new, it was glamorous,

it was exciting at the
time and Carly wasn't used

to liaising with people outside
of her own social network.

When we create an online profile,

we're sharing information about ourself.

We're sharing our likes, dislikes,

our loves, our hates, and so on.

So actually we're sharing
quite intimate information

and essentially show people who we are.

It's then very easy to
be taken advantage of.

- [Host] In August 2005
Carly's online profile

attracted the attention of
a guy called Brandon Kane,

an 18 year old rock musician
who lived in Melbourne.

- He saw Carly's profile and they all

just started talking to each other.

The girls were all excited.

He was talking to a number of her friends.

She came to me and said, "Mom,

"I've met this really cool guy,
he's awesome, he's lovely."

And I'm like, "Okay, yeah,
right, tell me about him."

And she was just gushing,

she just thought he was
the best thing ever.

- I thought he was attractive.

I was jealous in some ways, I guess.

Every young girl who
likes that kind of music,

that's what they wanted in a partner.

It was everything that she'd
obviously dreamt about.

- [Host] While Sonya
was pleased that Carly

was making new friends, she
kept a watchful eye over her.

- He was 18, and I said to her, "You know,

"there's a bit of an age difference here.

"Just keep it cool."

And every time I looked over her shoulder

it was just these normal
conversations about life.

They were talking about
music, school, homework,

traveling, things they
wanted to do in their future.

The kind of normal conversations you have

when you're getting to know somebody.

It was just okay, sounds like a nice kid.

- [Host] With so much in common,

Brandon and Carly grew closer.

They began a long-distance
relationship online.

- Brandon was the best thing

that could have possibly
happened to Carly.

She's come out of this horrible situation

with the alcohol poisoning
into a really good

stable relationship with this boy.

- When you commence online
dating you're already saying

"I'm willing to trust."

Once your profile is there,
once other people are looking

at it you're exposing
yourself to others in a way

which would not normally
be the level of disclosure

that you would have if
you met face-to-face.

Traditionally it's younger
people who are more vulnerable

because they're willing to
suspend their disbelief.

They're not necessarily as cynical.

And they're not necessarily as mistrustful

as an older group.

- [Host] As Sonya showed
interest in their relationship,

so did Brandon's stepfather, Shane.

- I always remember
looking at Carly's page

and seeing the conversations
that they were having

between each other, and the dad, Shane,

was always included on
these conversations.

It was like the three
of them were talking.

- [Host] Carly told Brandon
that she had grown up

without her father.

- There was definitely a
void of her dad in her life.

That's why I believe
that he introduced Shane.

- Some people are really,
really skilled at seeking out

what they see as vulnerabilities
in someone's profile.

If there's a gap in someone's
needs, they'll try to fill it

so that that person depends on them

and trusts them even more.

- [Host] In January 2007 Carly planned

to celebrate her 15th
birthday with a party at home.

She invited Brandon to come.

- Brandon sent a message
back saying, "Look,

"I'm not gonna be able to make it.

"I'm going to be somewhere
else at the time.

"But my stepfather can come instead."

- Carly came running into
the kitchen and said,

"Mom, Brandon's dad's on the phone."

He said, "Look, I'm coming to Adelaide

"and I'd love to drop by a
present for Carly's birthday

"and come and meet the family."

And I said, "Okay, let's see
if we can work that out."

- Brandon can't make it, she's crushed.

But the idea that Shane can come instead,

that gives her a bit of boost again,

the idea that okay, my
boyfriend can't come,

but the stepdad can be
there and he's a friend too.

- Through social media
we can talk to someone

for a very long time before
we actually meet them.

And what happens is we
might grow to trust them

or feel close to them.

If you met somebody in
person for the first time,

you probably wouldn't trust them enough

to invite them to stay at your house.

But if you've spoken to them online,

you might be lulled into
a false sense of security

and you might extend a bunch of trust

that you wouldn't usually.

- [Host] On the evening
of Carly's birthday party,

Brandon's stepfather, Shane,
arrived at Carly's house.

- He was just a normal guy.

He was just polite.

Met my family, met her cousins.

Is there anything I can do?

Carly is just absolutely so happy

to finally meet Brandon's dad.

She was just absolutely beaming

and absolutely busting to
find out more about Brandon.

Eventually at the end of the
night everyone went to bed,

a bunch of kids slept in Carly's room.

And then he said, "I
better go and get a hotel"

and everything, and I was
like, "Don't be silly,

"there's a spare room."

- [Host] Shane stayed the
night in the family guest room.

- When I woke up in the
morning and went to get ready

I walked past her bedroom
door and I noticed

that Shane was asleep on Carly's bed

on top of the covers with
all the other kids in there.

And I immediately I went, "What the?"

And I said, "You need to
get out of my house now.

"Get your things and leave."

He puffed up and said nothing, was silent.

(dramatic music)

And walked out of the house

and got in his car and drove away.

And I said to Carly, "I
don't care how much you care

"about Brandon, there is something
wrong here with his dad."

- At the start I didn't understand Sonya.

I didn't understand on a parenting level

how you could be prepared
to let a stranger

come stay in your house.

But you've gotta remember,
he wasn't a stranger.

Everyone in the family knew Shane.

Everybody in the family knew Brandon.

Sure, they hadn't met them face-to-face,

but they knew them, same way that you know

your kids' friend's parents at school.

- I cut the internet off, I
took her phone away from her,

and said to her, "I'm
going to the police."

Mom, no, please don't, please, I beg you,

don't go to the police.

Mom, if you go to the police
I'll never see Brandon again.

Literally begging me
not to call the police.

So I didn't call the police.

Here I have a daughter
whose heart has been

really taken in by this boy.

And so I had to try and think on my feet,

how am I going to negotiate this issue?

I said to her, "Okay, I'll
give you your phone back,

"but there's no more
connection with Shane."

She said, "Mom, you
know what, that's fine.

"I don't need to talk to Shane ever again.

"I just wanna be able to see Brandon,

"and I hope this doesn't
break our friendship,

"our relationship."

It was nothing out of the
ordinary, just an ordinary day.

She was going to catch
the bus down to the city

to meet her friends in
town and then go back

to her friend's house for a sleepover,

which we'd prearranged over
the phone with the mom and dad.

And she got all dressed up.

She wanted me to paint her nails for her,

so I painted her nails
in two different colors.

She used, I'm sure, a full can
of hairspray getting ready.

When she was all ready she got her bag

and she put her overnight things in there

and a giant can of hairspray.

She was in the hallway and she
said, "Mom, give me a hug."

And I basically gave her
a hug and then she wanted

another hug, and then I wanted a hug,

and then she wanted another hug,

so we had four massive,
giant hugs at the doorway.

Then she said, "I love you,"

and she just skipped off the veranda.

Like completely carefree, "Love you, mom."

(melancholy music)

- In the early hours on
the morning of the 20th

of February we received a call

at the Major Crime Office
from the local police.

A body of a young female
had been found here

at Horseshoe Bay.

Initially we didn't know if
it was an accidental drowning

or something suspicious.

And as the day progressed the pathologist

stripped away any realm
of it being an accident.

You could see bruises on her face.

The female's body had injuries

that were inconsistent
with being an accident.

This is heading down that path

of being a very callous homicide.

So the efforts really stepped up

to identify who the victim is.

- 8:00 in the morning I rang Carly.

Her phone was off, and I thought,

"Hang on a minute, this is my
15 year old teenage daughter

"who never has her phone off."

Then the next thing you
know I get a phone call

and it's a man who says, "Is
this the home of Carly Ryan?"

And I said, "Yes, I'm her mom."

And he said, "I just found
your daughter's purse

"on the side of the road."

And it was in a location far away

from where she was supposed to be.

Then rang the family where she
was supposed to be staying.

Oh, Carly never showed up.

What, why didn't you call me?

Why didn't I know about
this, what do you mean?

So where is she?

We don't know.

Immediately I called police, I said,

"My daughter's missing, I can't find her."

And they proceeded to tell
me that they found the body

of a girl matching Carly's description.

We need you to come in
to identify this girl.

And going into a room with a curtain

and a glass window, and my
whole family bracing themselves

and going, "It's okay,
it probably won't be her,

"it's all right."

And then the police
saying, "Are you ready?"

And then they pulled the curtain back.

It wasn't until I saw her fingernails

that I painted the day before
that I was like, "Oh my God."

I mean, what prepares
you to lose your child?

She's not supposed to go before me.

I'm supposed to go before her.

How could this be my daughter
laying on a metal slab,

and who on earth would do this to my child

who was just this loving
bundle of happy joy,

who would never hurt anybody?

Who could do this and
why would anyone do this

and how did this happen?

- [Reporter] 15 year
old Carly Ryan drowned

with severe head injuries on Monday night.

- I went and turned the
TV on and watched the news

and her face just popped up.

It just hit me like a ton of bricks.

Nobody knew who had done
it or what had happened.

We were all just so scared,

this person was still out on the loose.

- In this area over here
there were items found

that indicated there'd
been a violent struggle.

There was a tip of a latex glove found,

jewelry items, including
earrings, necklace.

And there was also some droplets of blood.

(dramatic music)

- [Host] Police expanded their search

to the nearby shopping area.

- The police came to check for CCTV.

Looking at that CCTV
you are able see Carly.

It was quite distinctive clothing.

And she had a red streak in her hair.

- [Host] The two unidentifiable men

immediately became suspects.

- [John] We needed to start looking at

who these people might be, of course,

who may have done this.

- [Host] Another major breakthrough came

when an eyewitness reported
seeing Carly with two men

on the beach near the
crime scene late at night.

He also noted a lone car in
the car park above the beach.

- He gave a really good description

of the vehicle, a Toyota Lexus.

He didn't have the registration number,

but significantly he was able to describe

a security badge that was attached

to the front passenger air vent.

He drew a picture of that security badge

with the number 24.

It's the top of a tag that a
security officer would wear

that performs door duties.

- [Host] Meanwhile, investigators turned

to Carly's mother for help.

- Who has Carly been in contact with?

What electronic devices, what
mobile phone has she got,

where is that, what's been
happening recently in her life?

- I gave them all the
information from her computer

and assisted them in every way I could

to help them to try and piece together

what had actually happened to Carly.

- [Host] Detectives looked into Carly's

online relationships.

- The name Brandon Kane
was just a constant name

that Carly was in contact with.

Carly seemed to be a bit infatuated,

almost in love with this Brandon Kane,

a boyfriend/girlfriend type relationship.

- [Host] Looking through
Brandon and Carly's

email exchanges detectives
notice some strange behavior.

- [John] He was trying to
continually manipulate things

with her friends and associates.

- [Host] As her relationship
with Brandon grew closer,

Carly had become increasingly
isolated from her friends.

- He started making up
rumors about her online

and telling her that her friends had said

certain things about her
which they hadn't said.

Brandon had said, "All your
friends are just leaving you

"because they're all just jealous

"of the relationship that
we have and that's why

"they don't wanna be
friends with you anymore."

So I think at this point
Carly probably thought

that Brandon was her only friend.

He isolated her so much from everybody.

- Through that investigation
I just breathed in and out,

focused on Carly.

Because I think what drives that issue is

you want the truth to be revealed.

- [Host] Sonya also showed
detectives an email chain

between herself and
Brandon's stepfather, Shane,

following the incident at
Carly's birthday party.

- Sonya had told us that
there had been an exchange

in an email between her and this Shane

where it was quite nasty.

- When I agreed not to contact police,

I sent Shane an email and
said he no longer had access

to Carly and that if he
approached her in any manner,

online, on the phone, in life,

that I would go straight to the police.

- The reply email sent from
Shane was, "Bitch please!

"The things you called
me were totally defaming

"and I've forwarded the
email onto my solicitor

"for further action.

"By the way, if Brandon and
Carly wish to be together,

"they will, and here is
a big news flash, bitch,

"if they do get together,
I'm quite sure Carly

"will be moving in with him.

"You lose, bitch."

And I just went whoa,
okay, this is full on.

Then I sent an email back saying

I wouldn't be threatened by him.

And then I just left it
alone because I didn't want

to pursue that kind of dialogue with him.

And honestly I just wanted him to go away.

- Predators online, many
of them will persevere

far beyond what one would expect.

Many of them will stalk or remain engaged,

will take setbacks and
will continue to gnaw away

at the subject if what they
want is to conquer them.

- [Host] With Brandon and
Shane the lead suspects,

police took a close look
at Carly's mobile phone.

- When we looked at the
data there was constant

phone contact between a number

of different telephone numbers.

Two in particular that stood out.

- [Host] Police asked
the telephone company

to track the movements of
these two phone numbers.

- We were able to see that the phone calls

had been made from Victoria
to Adelaide Hills to Carly.

We were able to then track
timings for visits to Adelaide.

- [Host] The data showed
that the phones had traveled

from Victoria to Adelaide on
the night Carly went missing

and on the night of her birthday,

the night Shane came to visit.

- At the same time we were
sending off for the checks

from telecommunication companies to see

who held the account at the other end.

And as we looked into
who those people were

and the addresses provided with them,

we just found that they
were completely false.

- [Host] With no real name
or address from the records,

police continued to trace
the movements of the phones.

- We were noticing that there was a number

of calls at Walkerville,
which is a suburb in Adelaide.

And, of course, you're
looking at what sort

of accommodation people that
travel over in a vehicle

would be staying at, and there's a lodge,

Caravan Park, nearby in Walkerville.

- [Host] On a hunch, detectives
visited the Caravan Park

in Walkerville.

- A whole raft of inquiries were made

at that Caravan Park and
witnesses came forward.

Two men had stayed in
one of the cabins there.

- [Host] The two men drove a
car that matched the one seen

in the car park near the crime scene

on the night of the murder.

- And there was a registration
number given of this car.

The vehicle came out to
an address in Victoria.

- [Host] The address in Melbourne

where the car was registered
matched the location

where Brandon and Shane had called Carly.

- At the end of that day
we had two detectives off

to Melbourne on a plane.

- [Host] Arriving in Melbourne,

the detectives from South Australia

scouted the address where
the car was registered.

- The vehicle was actually
seen parked outside the house.

And most tellingly, that security badge

was still attached to
the passenger air vent.

It was exactly as that
witness had described it.

- [Host] The vehicle and its address

also provided investigators with a new

and shocking revelation.

- We established what
the registration number

of the vehicle was, that
came out to a Garry Newman.

Garry Newman did live at this
address we were looking at.

We're trying to link who Garry is,

not the person that's been corresponding

with Carly on the internet.

On the 3rd of March, 2007,

knocked on the door and see
him through the front window,

and he came from his computer and got up

and answered the door and was arrested

by a couple of my colleagues.

- [Host] Garry Newman
exercised his right to silence.

Detectives searched
his house for evidence.

- It was a case that even on
opening that first desk drawer

by Garry's computer there were pages

and pages of profile names and passwords

for different social networking site,

sites that I'd never even heard of.

Garry had 200 plus profiles.

There is a realization that Brandon

and Shane just aren't real.

- [Host] Investigators discover that Carly

wasn't the only teenager
Garry Newman was talking to.

- The electronic crime member was able

to move the mouse and get
the screen to come up.

There was chats open on that computer,

and Garry was talking to someone

that ended up being a 14 year old girl.

- [Host] Newman had not
only been deceiving Carly,

but also numerous other teenagers

through his hundreds of
fake online personas.

- He must have spent hours and hours

on his computer making profiles.

- [Host] Each profile appeared real,

using fake photos, friends, and family

to craft each of his online personas.

Brandon and Shane were two of those.

- He had multiple
profiles linked together,

multiple people linked together.

But they all had some sort of
background information to them

so if you did an initial
check who the person was

and then looked at some photographs,

there'd be something to support each

and every one of those people.

- When the police
investigate online offenders,

they often find that
they've been in contact

with a range of different people.

They often also find
evidence such as diaries

or other notes to the self
that the person has used

to ensure consistency in their story.

What we often see is that the internet is

a very important part of what they do.

It empowers them to be a different person

from what they are in real life.

It gives them an opportunity to contact

a much broader range of people,

and it allows them the opportunity

to recreate the person that
they portray themselves as

in order to win the trust of others.

- [Host] During the
search of Newman's house,

a camera that mysteriously went missing

at Carly's 15th birthday
party was recovered.

- And when it was examined,
this photograph here

is the photograph showing
Garry in the house.

The importance of that
photograph was Sonya was able

to look at that photograph and say, "Yes,

"this is the person that came over

"to Carly's birthday party, this is Shane.

"It's not this person
called Garry Newman."

- What?

I made the guy dinner without even knowing

who I'd just let into my house.

Had no comprehension,
absolutely no understanding.

- [Host] Investigators also
broke the news to Sonya

that Brandon wasn't real either.

- What are you talking
about Brandon isn't real?

I've seen him, I've seen pictures of him.

I saw him typing.

That was looped vision of a boy typing.

What?

A complete and utter shock, utter shock.

We were no match for a criminal like this,

absolutely no match.

- The most fascinating
thing about this case is

the extent to which the offender went

to construct an artificial world

to draw others into them,
the risk taking they took

in terms of engaging in
face-to-face contact,

and their willingness to
persevere with a fantasy,

a concoction of strange personalities

despite the fact that they were challenged

and confronted on this.

That level of persistence,

that level of machination is exceptional.

- [Reporter] Garry Newman's

been concealing his identity for years.

The 51 year old used the fake
online persona Brandon Kane

to lure Carly Ryan before murdering her

on a beach at Port Elliot.

- The last night of Carly
Ryan's life came about

because Shane finally had
something to offer her

that she wanted, he had Brandon Kane.

He'd arranged for a kid from Victoria

to act as a stand-in, to
play the role of Brandon.

He made sure that Carly knew
that he and Brandon were

in town, and this was her
opportunity to see him.

- [Host] What Sonya didn't know was that

on the evening Carly left for
a sleepover with her friend,

she had secretly made other plans.

- Garry had left Victoria
on the 14th of February,

driven to Adelaide.

There'd been contact between
Carly and Garry on the phone.

- [Host] Under the guise
of Brandon and Shane,

Newman had arranged to
pick Carly up from Adelaide

and take her to nearby Port Elliot.

- Can you imagine what
it must have felt like

for Carly at that time,
getting out of that house,

knowing that on the other
side of that little fence

was going to be the
person you've been waiting

to meet for 18 months?

She expected this
brooding, deep thinking boy

who loved to play guitar,
who had written her

all these beautiful letters and messages,

who had professed undying love for her.

This was gonna be the
moment she got to lay eyes

on her true love, but it's no wonder

that she told her mother a white lie.

It's no wonder that she
was prepared one last time

to trust Shane, because this is

what she'd been waiting for.

- I truly didn't think she'd lie to me.

I didn't think that he would be able

to infiltrate her life like that.

I didn't think that he would be able

to come in between her and I.

- So Carly Ryan had come here thinking

she was with friends, but
she really had no idea

what was going to transpire later.

- [Host] Based on evidence,
detectives pieced together

what they believe happened in the moments

leading up to Carly's murder.

- Carly Ryan was violently
assaulted by Garry Newman.

He jumped her from behind,
punched her in the head,

and pushed her head into
the sand, suffocating her.

He held her head in the
sand and sat on her.

He's a big man, he's six foot three,

probably 110 plus kilos.

Carly was just a young,
small 15 year old girl.

There was no way she would have been able

to get away from him.

And then just disposed of her body

in the ocean just over here hoping

that her body wouldn't be recovered.

- The forensic experts
calculated that she was alive

for at least 30 minutes.

I've always had trouble
coming to terms with that,

this idea that she was lost and alone

in the water for that long.

And that someone could
just be so calloused

with a young life, just
attack them from behind

and throw them away like
that, just discard them.

- I've got no doubt that Garry
thought that she was dead

and thinking that her
body's gonna be washed away,

never to be found and she would just

be a reported missing person
and no one would be the wiser.

But fortunately for us
her body was recovered.

That led to being able to
put this picture together

and get the evidence to make
sure we secured a conviction.

- 10 years ago people didn't understand

the way these platforms worked.

They didn't understand what it meant

to create a profile online.

They didn't understand that
the internet is a window

into your life, it's not a
door you can lock and shut,

unless you're very careful.

- [Host] In October 2009 the
case finally came to court.

Sean Fewster reported on the trial.

- There's always a fear
when you're covering

a criminal trial that
the jury's gonna hear

everything you've heard and come back

with a completely different take on it,

that you've realized
in your heart of hearts

that this person's guilty
but the jury's gonna say

oh no, there's a technicality,

or we're just not prepared
to convict on that evidence.

The jury deliberated for 10
and a half hours over two days.

And it was such a long period of time

worrying whether Newman
was gonna walk free

at the end of it.

So when they came back
in and we all filed in

to hear that verdict,
the relief that swept

over the room, and it
was a packed courtroom,

the relief that swept
over that packed courtroom

when they said, "Guilty,"
it was just palpable.

- [Reporter] Newman was
convicted of murder,

which carries a mandatory life sentence.

her daughter set Sonya

on a mission that would
change Australian law.

- I immediately knew Garry
Newman cannot be the only man

out there using the
internet to harm children.

So what can I do?

If I have to live here without my child,

I have to do something meaningful,

I have to do something to
prevent this suffering.

- [Host] Sonya sought
for a change in the law

to give police greater powers
to catch online predators.

- Carly was the first girl murdered

by an online predator in Australia,

so this never happened before.

And so all of sudden
people are like, "What?

"There are criminals
online doing this stuff?"

The legislation hadn't
caught up with technology.

So we were not prepared.

- This is a predator's paradise.

This is exactly where a
deceptive person wants to be,

the space that they want to work in

to achieve their goals.

And so people as a result
looked at Carly's story

and said we need to make sure
this doesn't happen again.

We need to be more careful about that,

because the next child could be mine.

- [Host] After a six year battle,

on the 15th of June, 2017
Carly's Law was finally passed.

Authorities could now
prosecute people lying

about their age to minors online.

- This is testament to
the love of Sonya Ryan

for her daughter, and
that this act of love,

this relentless campaign,
this passion of Sonya's,

will undoubtedly lead to
many lives being saved

in the future.

- Positively, Carly's Law
came out of this case.

This might provide a deterrent,

and it might stop people from engaging

in risky behaviors with young people.

Unfortunately, it may not be
a deterrent for everybody,

so we still have to remain
very aware of online safety.

- The bond I have with my
daughter is unbreakable,

and I feel her all the time
in the work that I'm doing.

I'll never get over it.

It's something that you will
have for the rest of your life.

I mean, I miss her every
minute of every day.

I chose to fight, and not only for Carly,

but for all of the other
many, many thousands

of children who don't have a voice.

Carly used to walk up here.

She just absolutely loved this spot.

For me, it's a place
that I also come to now

for peace and tranquility,
focusing my grief

into a way of being able to help others.

And to just continue to try,

to try and do what I think my
daughter would want me to do,

and that is to live and to
try and make a difference.
