(narrator) In the Great Hall of the Justice League

there are assembled the worlds four greatest heroes

created from the cosmic legends of the universe:

Superman..

[train horn honks]

...Wonder Woman..

...Batman..

...Aquaman..

...and those three junior Superfriends..

...Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog.

Their mission, to fight injustice

to right that which is wrong

and to serve all mankind.

(narrator) Nature at her best.

The sun is shining, birds are singing

and lazy clouds drift by.

What could possibly mar this balmy summer day?

The answer, a spacecraft.

And a most unusual spacecraft.

No indication of nationality, no name or number.

Nothing but a skull wearing dark glasses.

Inside the spacecraft

the pilot activates the viewing screen

to observe the terrain below.

A locomotive comes into frame.

The mysterious pilot next trains his scope

on a building being torn down by a wrecking crew.

[man cackles]

And now, looming up in the distance

the pilot moves in on a gas station.

[man cackling]

Okay, Wonder Dog, back in the basket.

(Wendy) Come on, twinkle toes, now.

[yelps]

(narrator) At the Hall of the Justice League

the Superfriends find themselves caught up

in another tense situation.

(Wilcox) 'Friends, a rather disturbing UFO'

has intruded into our airspace.

And between its initial point of entry

and the last recorded notation of its flight path

it has managed to snatch up and carry along with it

a series of objects totaling over 14,000 tons.

'Something to think about, eh? Snap judgments, anyone?'

Anything that could do that would have to be..

(Wilcox) 'Yes? Go on.'

I was going to say, a white dwarf, colonel.

A white dwarf. That would do it alright.

As it happens, the entire staff

at the national observatory thinks so too.

Would you check it out?

Wendy, there is something going on.

Let's tell them about the bike.

Hold it a minute, you two. Alright, Robin.

'And that's a lot, Superman.'

So you three rubbed shoulders with a white dwarf, eh?

Superman, do you mind telling us what is a white dwarf?

(Superman) 'Aquaman, you're closest to the video bank.'

You do the honors.

(Aquaman) 'Here is a star.'

'Vastly bigger than a planet such as Earth.'

'And with a far greater gravitational pull, naturally.'

'But sometimes a strange thing happens to a star.'

'It begins shrinking.'

'Until finally it becomes what astronomers call a white dwarf.'

'As you see, it has shrunk to the size of a small planet.'

'But it has become more and more dense.'

'As a result, it still retains its original'

'tremendous gravitational pull.'

It's like a giant, economy-size flying magnet.

(Batman) Right. And even a sliver of a white dwarf

could have done all that.

And since this is the spot where the white dwarf

probably impacted, let's go take a look.

Some of us should examine these other checkpoints for clues too.

Good idea. You and the others handle that.

'Robin and the kids and I will check the probable impact area.'

(narrator) In the vastness of the sky

Batman and his party zoom toward the point indicated

on the electronic map.

The point where the white dwarf

may have slammed into Earth.

[barking]

(Marvin) 'Nice going, Wonder Dog.'

That must be the spot alright.

I can see the locomotive.

And there's the wrecked building, and the pickup trucks.

(Batman) And they've all been neatly laid out by a white dwarf.

A white dwarf with a human brain.

Batman, how could any human being

be involved with a white dwarf?

(Batman) I don't know the answer, Wendy.

(Robin) Normal gravity reading, Batman.

- Figures. - Hey, there's my bike.

Great. That accounts for everything.

Everything but the white dwarf.

[sniffing]

[snarling]

[yelping]

[grunting]

[barking]

And since a white dwarf can't get up

and move away by itself it means only one thing.

[whimpering]

You mean, someone's transporting it?

- An unbelievable job, Batman. - Right, Robin.

There would have to be a fantastically complicated

gravity shield for one thing.

Who do you think is behind all this, Batman?

[groans]

[grunting]

What I'd like at this point is a clue.

Any kind of clue that would..

(Robin) 'Frozen phantoms, look at that.'

(Marvin) 'It's, it's the abominable snowman.'

(Batman) 'Yes, junior-size model.'

'Let's follow it.'

[barking]

[laughing] Oh, Wonder Dog, why don't you stop clowning?

Hold it, everyone.

(Wendy) 'Golly, Batman, you look like you're seeing a ghost.'

(Batman) 'I am. A ghost named Raven.'

(Robin) 'Raven? The super-scientist that Superman sent to prison?'

(Batman) 'There's only one Raven, I'm happy to say'

and this is his ring.

Marvin, you asked me who could be behind all this, remember?

(Wendy) 'Raven? But he's in prison.'

Superman will find this information very intriguing.

[Raven laughs over radio]

(Raven) 'Tell Superman not to waste his time'

'ooking for me, Batman.'

'At the time and place of my choosing'

'I'll come looking for him.'

[Raven cackling]

(narrator) Back at the Hall of the Justice League

Superman examines the fantastically ingenious

receiving and sending shortwave set

built into the ring.

He confirms what the others have suspected right along.

(Superman) It's Raven's ring alright.

Leaving this for us to find was his way

of repeating his old threat, remember?

What threat was that?

It was after Superman single-handedly

had Raven apprehended and brought to trial.

Let's play the electronic transcript for Wendy and Marvin.

You have been found guilty of a terrible crime.

'Your attempt to jar the Earth from its axis'

'might easily have resulted in the extinction'

'of the entire human race.'

I am a scientist.

My experiment dictated that I take that risk.

A sense of humanity would have bid you not to.

Is there any statement you would like to make

before sentence is passed upon you?

Yes.

This was all Superman's doing.

Give him this message.

'Tell him that the prison has never been built'

'that can hold Raven.'

Gee. But I don't get it.

Yeah. Raven's still in prison, isn't he?

Theoretically, yes.

But as soon as Colonel Wilcox calls back

we have a feeling we'll learn that--

Well, I'm back, with some good news, I'm happy to report.

(Batman) 'You checked with the warden?'

I did, and he personally assures me

that the Raven is still in his custody.

Is there anything else I can do for you?

Yes, alert the warden that we intend to pay him a visit.

(narrator) Gateview Prison, a massive complex

of concrete and stainless steel

especially constructed just to house

one super-dangerous prisoner, Raven.

And in the warden's office

Superman and Wonder Woman receive assurances

from the warden himself.

So I can confirm to both of you

Raven is still honor guest of my establishment.

If you don't mind, warden, we'd like to see for ourselves.

Very well. If you'll follow me.

Here is the Raven's nest.

'And here is the Raven himself.'

'Satisfied now?'

(Superman) 'Open the cell, if you would.'

- 'Why, it's..' - 'Yes, warden.'

A reasonably exact facsimile of Raven, that's all.

B-but where is the real Raven, then?

Quiet, please. That's him now.

(narrator) Only the unbelievably acute hearing

of Superman and Wonder Woman can pick up the sounds.

Sounds of something approaching at supersonic speed.

High in the sky. Heading for the prison.

How quickly can you and your men get out of this building?

(Warden) 'Why, with all the electronic barriers'

'five, maybe six minutes.'

Too long. Have them follow me, Wonder Woman.

[beeping]

The prison, there it goes.

But why? And to where?

We'll find out.

(Superman) There's our wandering jail.

(Wonder Woman) And up there, the bird pulling all the strings, Raven.

No, no, no, Superman, I'm not ready to tackle you head on.

Not yet.

(narrator) No smokescreen ever devised

could block Superman's x-ray vision.

But this fantastic cascade of atomic particles

is something Superman has never encountered before.

He is momentarily blinded.

But before he can adjust his vision

to cope with the dazzling fog, it's gone.

Gone, too, are the prison and Raven's spacecraft.

Superman and Wonder Woman crisscross the sky, searching.

But finally..

(Wonder Woman) Fantastic, isn't it?

I can't understand it.

That prison and Raven's spacecraft

they should be somewhere in sight.

(Wonder Woman) It's as if they just disappeared.

(narrator) Later, back at the Hall of the Justice League

Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog listen and watch.

(Superman) 'You're looking at a diagram'

'that illustrates how we see an object.'

'These dots moving out from the house represent photons.'

'Units of light energy focused on the retina of the eye.'

'And, there, the information is transmitted to the brain.'

'Which registers it's impression of the house.'

'So it's obvious that, in order to see'

we must start with the photons.

Now just suppose that Raven had created a device

that sent out anti-photons.

'Which would arrange themselves'

'into such a dense, solid pattern'

'that they would block photons coming from the house.'

'Then you would have what amounts to a visibility shield.'

'The eye would no longer see the house.'

But, Superman, would the anti-photons

block your x-ray vision?

(Superman) If Raven could create an anti-photon device

he could certainly create reflective

mirror-type photons

that would deflect even my x-ray vision.

So now you know how Raven escaped

from Wonder Woman and Superman.

But, jeepers, how will we ever be able

to catch up with Raven now?

Uh-oh. A marine TroubAlert.

Condition red, everybody.

"Freight carrier submarine U.S.S. Narwhal

reported in distress off Cape Hatteras."

Wendy, Marvin, see if you can make

direct contact with the sub.

- Right, Batman. - Aye, aye, sir.

Justice League to U.S.S. Narwhal

come in, please. Come in.

(Holloway) 'Captain Holloway of the Narwhal here.'

'We need help urgently.'

We've your position and bearing. Uh, what is your problem?

(Holloway) 'It's a mysterious force driving us'

'toward the Gravesend shoals.'

Hang in there, captain. We're sending help.

Mysterious force? I bet that's spelled Raven.

Dollars to doughnuts you're right.

- Your party, Aquaman. - I'm on my way.

Batman, Robin, I could use a lift.

Fine, we'll use the Batcopter.

I just had a thought, Superman.

So did I. They may need help.

That's the very thought.

- Superman. - Wonder Woman.

[Wonder Dos yelps]

(Wendy) 'What about us?'

(Marvin) 'Any law says we can't help too?'

(Superman) 'Good thinking, you three.'

These flight paths of Raven's spacecraft

came in last night.

Yes, post them on the wall map.

That'll be a big help.

But, but..

Oh, posting flight paths. Big deal.

[Wendy sighs] 'You'd think that once, just once'

'they'd include us in on the action.'

(narrator) In the air, Aquaman, Batman and Robin

are swallowed up by the stormy skies above the Atlantic.

While deep in the troubled waters off Cape Hatteras

brawny crewmen aboard the submarine, struggle in vain

against the mysterious force assailing them.

It's no use, captain.

It's like something's taken over the steering.

Sorry, captain, but I insist

that you head for that rocky shore.

(Robin) Immediately over sub, Aquaman. Now.

(narrator) Plunging to the sub's depth

Aquaman makes an instantaneous decision.

He's powerless to halt or divert

the relentlessly-driven craft.

He needs assistance.

His telepathic appeal ranges outward through the water.

Then he descends even deeper into the darkness.

His objective, the fabulous Neptune's girdle.

Seaweed that grows only in the valleys of the ocean bed.

A sea vine so strong it cannot be broken.

It can, though, be cut.

Cut by the diamond-like teeth of the sawfish.

And at Aquaman's silent command..

As he swims upward, another telepathic signal

reaches through the vastness.

A call for a different form of aid.

Then, with physical powers that only he possesses

Aquaman entwines the Neptune's girdle

about the sub's conning tower.

Finally creating an immense seaweed harness.

With almost perfect timing

the aid arrives, a pair of huge blue whales.

One-hundred-fifty-ton giants of the whale family

and the most powerful swimmers too.

Pulling with every ounce of their combined strengths

Aquaman and the big blues

wage their tug of war

against the forces acting on the sub.

Can they overcome it?

So it's Aquaman now.

Alright, let's see him

and his crew of ocean flunkies

try to stop this.

(narrator) Suddenly, Raven

redirects the pull of the white dwarf.

And the vessel is immediately pulled to the surface.

Aquaman and friends double their efforts.

Sir, is this depth gauge accurate?

I don't know. Why?

Well, if it is, we're now 26 feet

above the surface of the ocean.

[laughing]

And now, a little higher.

Higher yet.

[cackling]

(narrator) Completely absorbed in his evil plan

to control the submarine

Raven is caught short by Superman's

and Wonder Woman's sudden arrival.

Shocked, the Raven momentarily releases his control.

And the sub settles back into the sea.

Now Raven performs the only defensive maneuver left to him.

He turns the white dwarf's gravity field full strength.

The crushing blasts of gravitational energy

have their effect on Wonder Woman

and momentarily, she blacks out.

Her airplane goes out of control.

For Superman, Raven's gravitational game

has made the sky seem an impenetrable barrier

through which he claws, expending almost the last ounce

of his enormous strength.

Then, marshalling his last drop of physical power..

[gasps]

(Wonder Woman) 'Help. Superman, help.'

(narrator) A distant cry, unheard

except by the incredibly sensitive ears of Superman.

Wonder Woman? In trouble?

Hello there, young lady. Coming around?

I must have.. Raven? Did he get away?

Only for the moment, Wonder Woman.

(narrator) Holding down the fort at the Hall of the Justice League

Wendy and Marvin finally have finished

their routine chore, routine, that is,

until Marvin makes a discovery.

Take a look at Raven's flight paths we've posted.

So?

[sighs]

Look.

Here's the first flight path, right?

- 'So?' - 'Wait.'

'Here's the second flight path.'

(Wendy) 'I still say, so?'

(Marvin) 'Here's the third flight path'

'and here's the fourth and last.'

They all intersect at this one point.

Marvin, you're a very observant person.

Well, just a knack.

The point of intersection. Hmm.

Raven sure seems to be interested in it.

Yeah, I can hardly wait to show this to the Superfriends.

- Why wait for them? - What?

Marvin, why don't we check this out ourselves?

- Wendy, we couldn't do that. - Why not?

The Superfriends are always telling us

to be self-reliant, aren't they?

Sure, but.. I mean, we just can't.

Well, what I'm saying is, it would be wrong to..

[barking]

Okay, the majority rules.

(narrator) Hours of steady riding

bring Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog

to a strangely wild and gloomy-looking spot.

Oh, I'm pooped, Marvin. Can't we rest a while?

Rest all you like. We're here.

Here? We're at the intersection point on the map?

Yep. The one the Raven's so interested in.

Look, there's a cabin.

Hey, you, for the last time now

stay off of my property.

Hold on, pa, that ain't the same fella was here before.

W-w-well, you see, sir, we were working on our map.

And there were all these flight paths.

They intersected and we figured that, that the Raven..

marvin, maybe we should've let Superman

handle all this after all.

Superman? You acquainted with him?

Well, we work for him and for Wonder Woman.

And Aquaman and Batman and Robin.

Pa, you hear that?

Well, I'm Paw Martingale.

And this here's my boys, Mace and Vinnie.

And we'd all would be pleased and proud

if you'd come in and sit for a spell.

Fact of the matter is, we thought

you was the feller that's been plaguing us.

Real pesky feller.

Just can't seems to take no

for an answer.

Marvin.

Uh, this pesky feller, was he tall and thin?

Yup. Long, thin drink of water.

W-was he bald?

Balder than a speckled hen's egg.

With dark glasses, right?

I'd say we is discussing the same feller.

Mr. Martingale, do you mind telling us

what does this man want from you?

The sky stone. Go fetch it, Vinnie.

- Here it is, pa. - I found this a while ago.

Or maybe I should say, it found me.

(Martingale) I was doing my chores in the pea patch

when I first heard this noise.

[rushing in distance]

Then I sees this light.

It's a-getting brighter and brighter

and soon I sees why.

Whatever it is, it's blazing.

It's blazing straight down on me.

It was better than a week before that hole

stopped a-smoking.

And when it finally did

it seemed to bring on a bumper crop of mushrooms.

Anyway, I started digging and finally..

That's how I found the sky stone.

And this is what the Raven.. I-I mean,

the pesky feller's been trying to get?

Bound and determined to.

Offered all kinds of money for it.

Mr. Martingale, can we borrow this?

Hold on, that stone's not leaving this place.

It's become a family good luck piece.

We wanna show it to Superman and the others.

Why didn't you say so?

In that case, we'd be pleased and proud to.

(narrator) At the Hall of the Justice League

their rescue of the endangered sub completed

the Superfriends note Wendy's and Marvin's map.

They are studying it, when..

Hi, gang.

endy, these flight paths

you and Marvin posted, they show--

I know. We just came back from there.

- Where is there? - Paw Martingale's place.

Raven's been there several times

trying to get a green stone

which has been in the Martingale family since--

Never mind that now. Where is this green stone?

Marvin'll be right in with it.

Hey, wait till you see what Wendy and I..

What is this stone?

[together] Kryptonite.

(narrator) Kryptonite.

In all the far-ranging galaxy

the only substance against which Superman has no defense.

Kryptonite's radiation reduces him

to the condition of an invalid.

A glimpse of Krypton.

A once lush planet

doomed to die by hurling

a billion fragments of itself into space.

And who knows, from that final explosion

may have come that fragment of kryptonite

that alien visitor that sped across trackless outer space

to finally find its target on Earth.

Quickly, Superman's colleagues act

to seal the kryptonite in a lead-lined chest

that totally blocks its crippling radiation.

Superman, only momentarily affected

is soon his former self.

Ah, easy to see why Raven would give anything

for that little chunk of stone.

With it, he could have totally immobilized Superman.

The thing Marvin and I can't understand..

- Go ahead, Wendy. - Well..

Well, how come Raven wasn't able to snatch up

that dinky little cabin?

- It's incredible alright. - Wendy, Marvin.

Were there any mushrooms near that cabin?

- He's right. - We forgot to tell you.

There were thousands of them.

We never saw so many mushrooms before.

Funny-looking ones, all green and..

(Superman) 'Like these mushrooms?'

- Exactly. - Exactly.

I've got the picture now. Operation Hitchhiker, right?

Right, some mushroom spores must've hitched a ride

with that kryptonite.

But, golly!

Could mushrooms cancel out gravity?

Not ordinary gravity, such as we have here on Earth.

But the gravity field of a white dwarf, that's possible.

[alarm blaring]

Gentlemen, I'll get right down to cases.

Washington is worried about Raven.

I wish we could tell you there's nothing to worry about, colonel.

- How bad is it? - At the moment, very bad.

With his invisible shield, we can't get to the Raven.

And he can attack when and where he wants.

(Wilcox) 'Gentlemen and Wonder Woman'

'I think the National Strategy Council'

'should hear your views.'

Can you come to Washington right away?

(Superman) We're on our way right now, sir.

You kids will have to hold down the fort while we're gone.

But what if, what if there's an emergency?

Just use your heads.

(narrator) So the Hall of the Justice League

is left to the care of Wendy

Marvin and Wonder Dog.

(narrator) And then, the dreaded moment arrives. An emergency.

It's in there, isn't it?

Well, that's where they put it.

- Can't we just peek? - Ladies first.

Okay.

(narrator) Symbol of an ominous pipeline to the Raven.

The Death's Head ring.

(Wendy) Marvin, let's not fool with that.

You know what's on the other end.

Wendy, we're supposed to use our heads, aren't we?

Well, yes, but, but..

[clears throat]

Uh, hello?

(Raven) 'Superman. Where is he?'

He's out. He'll be back soon.

- 'Who are you?' - W-W-Wendy.

And this is Marvin.

We're friends of the Superfriends.

Friends? I don't think much of the company you keep.

- 'Listen, Mr. Raven--' - No, you listen to me, you two.

'So Superman let you get to the kryptonite before I did.'

'Alright, he'll pay dearly for that too.'

'Ask him how he likes it when the building goes into orbit.'

[laughing]

Wendy and Marvin try to find a cab.

[whistles]

And finally get one.

As they speed off to their meeting with the Superfriends

at the National Strategy Council

there are only minutes to spare before 5:00.

Look, the Supreme Court building.

Maybe that's the building that's going up at 5:00.

Look, there's the Senate.

Golly, I wonder how that would look in orbit.

[tires screeching]

[barking]

Wonder Dog, come back.

Oh.

We don't have time for this now.

[barking]

[meowing]

Wonder Dog, please, it's after visiting hours.

We're not even supposed to be in this building.

[panting]

(narrator) A stunned nation learns

that the Washington Monument has disappeared.

And at the tense meeting of the National Strategy Council

totally unaware of what else has disappeared

with the monument the Superfriends listen

to the nation's spokesman reviewing the loss.

A precious, irreplaceable part

of the nation's heritage has gone.

'What goes next? The Supreme Court building?'

The Senate? The White House?

No, nothing else will go. I can promise you that, sir.

How can you be so sure of that, Superman?

Because there is something Raven wants

more than anything else.

And I will see that he gets it in exchange.

It's fantastic. It's like they're real.

- And you made them? - Bah!

They're just toys I put together to help with the chores.

Let me show you some of my real achievements.

Here is an example of my true genius.

With this machine, I have outlawed gravity.

And with this machine

I can also draw a curtain of invisibility

that not even your mighty Superman can see through.

'With this, I can snatch'

'anything I want high into the air.'

A building, an ocean liner, a locomotive.

- Even a bicycle. - Yes, a bicycle.

Or a dog, if you like.

[growling]

Or if I get tired of that

I can make him disappear entirely.

because of a tiny fragment.

Anyway..

Here is my greatest achievement.

One that I labored years to build.

An instrument designed to do just one job

To detect the smallest presence of kryptonite.

And after more years of prospecting with this

I finally located a fragment of the precious stone.

[sobs] That Martingale family

they refused to sell it to me.

How long did it take these mushrooms

to grow, Mr. Martingale?

All sprung up in a hour or two. Right, boys?

Yup, you could practically see them swelling.

Like pups with the colic.

a solo rendezvous, high in the stratosphere

with Raven's spacecraft.

[thunder rumbles]

Complete with Washington's monument and a prison.

Oh, uh, just some things I picked up.

the celebrated word of Superman is.

Where's the kryptonite?

(narrator) So deftly and casually

that it escapes Raven's suspicious eye

Superman scatters the mushroom spores
