Suddenly in July, 1967,

the government decided to
build an airport in Narita.

In October, 1967 the Airport
Corporation began pile driving

backed by 2000 mobile
riot policemen.

In March, 1968, the Corporation
began land surveys

of land belonging to
pro-airport farmers.

The cast of this film consists
of a coalition of anti-airport farmers,

students, nationwide anti-war
groups, Ogawa Productions,

Airport Corporation workers
and riot police flying squads.

to talk about this airport.

To them we farmers

So the resort to violence.

But this has only increased
our fighting spirit.

Let's consider the power
of us as individuals.

It is the collective power
of the farmers on the land.

That power gives us our
fighting spirit.

Even if injured,
the power to fight remains.

If we follow the 'acceptable'
means of protest,

to the Narita dispute

is very complicated.

It affects the whole nation.

It's a matter of getting rid
of the LDP cabinet,

or fighting with the farmers
and being killed by them.

that ordinary farmers

have adopted our fighting tactics.

This has never happened before.

The way the farmers think

mentally and physically.

for our actions?

of the big battles.

So if those three men,
if they share this bond,

they become as one.

They share the same aim,

and that gives them the
strength and the courage...

to fight more effectively
against the enemy.

I'm not forcing anyone
to arm themselves. But I will.

We have been battling
together now for two years.

The relationship
is firmly established.

When it comes to carrying
weapons,

I can understand how
some don't wish to.

A kind of courage...
You have to reach in for it.

Every time you take up arms
you'll be shaking with fear.

But you have to hide that fear.

Not to think about the hate
from the police.

You don't think deeply about
why you're armed.

Our leaders have made
that quite clear.

But the combination
of our fear and their hatred...

I don't think we really
considered those two factors.

As we escalate the violence,
we stand more chance of

getting beaten up ourselves.

But I knew those guys
could do it.

I was so confident
that they'd stand tall.

I'm not talking about
some theoretical reading,

but those guys put their
bodies into battle.

And they faught some
severe battles for us.

Our protest has been
their training ground.

And it instilled in them
courage and determination.

Few in number, these young
farmers from Hishida

and Sanrizuka
have such a courage.

No matter how righteous
you think your cause is...

it's very hard to declare
that to thousands of people.

You're immediately in the spot-light,
and there's fear, too.

If I was alone I'd not
taken up weapons.

But when there's a dedicated
group doing it,

it unites us,
brings us together.

The idea that you aren't alone...

makes each one of us stronger.

Our armed men are our
best fighters.

They're the ones who read
the situation best.

They know their condition.

I don't mean theoretically...
...through their bodies.

They know that they have
to resort to violence.

This is not Marx, Lenin
or anything like that.

It's experienced directly
through the body.

You can't put it into words.

It's as if our bodies have
absorbed the experiences.

All the emotions of battle
that we've had.

A very big part of that
is plain fear...

One thing I realized was
that both the students,

and the young farmers
who faught together,

...who knew their limits
and did their very best...

...they are totally different
in outlook.

The farmers' attitude toward
battle is quite practical.

Whereas students tend to think
in more theoretical terms.

...like the financial and legal
results of being arrested.

We had enough talk.
Now's the time for action.

In spite of all,
I'm still confident.

The farmers are more
determined than the students.

That's how we've managed
to fight together till now.

The ties between us
are firmly bound.

No more need for words
to confirm all that.

We have a major influx
of riot police.

I count over 200 of them.

They're about 50 m from
the farm women's brigade.

Also, between 50 - 70
uniformed officers.

Another report of 80 riot cops.

The uniformed cops are
advancing on the women.

They've turned right at about
50 m distance.

They're getting into formation
in the field.

The other 120 or so
are facing off with the women.

Plus the 100 odd assembling
in the field.

They're taking position
in front of the women's brigade.

Doesn't look like they'll try
to flank us this time.

All indications are for
a frontal attack.

The women are holding
their ground.

Roger. Take care.
We're just about ready here.

Our men are now facing off against

the massed riot police and
Corporation workers.

Our vehicle is bumper to bumper
with their commander.

The women are behind us!

There are 100 riot cops
directly behind their car!

Roger. We've spotted
a troop of them heading up.

They're going straight.

Parallel to us and heading

They're approaching us off
to one side of our barricade.

Blocking traffic is a felony!

We must win this battle.

We must beat those
who brought the airport here.

It's sure to get worse.

But an airport here would be
permanent hell.

We cannot lose this battle.

I was too young for
World War II,

but I can see myself fighting
invading foreigners.

But our fellow Japanese?

These riot police have families.

to kill citizens.

I really hate those
who are giving the orders.

Like everyone else, these
riot police have mothers.

I'm sure they didn't teach
them to kill farmers.

All mothers raise their
kids with love and care,

hoping they'll make
something of themselves.

Now their children
work for the government.

A government that teaches them
to attack their own people.

I pity their poor
suffering mothers.

How sad they must be.

I'd like to talk
to these young policemen.

The comradeship is very satisfying!

I really like that feeling.

I really enjoy talking
with my good friends.

and the farmers' wives
who are fighting together.

It's the first time in all my years
to have such a feeling.

I really admire my son,

for leading this battle
against authority.

I tell all my friends
how proud I am of him.

And they all agree.

Before the troubles he was
a boy reading comics.

But this has turned him
into a man.

We have to answer violence
with violence.

Because our very lives
are at stake.

We have to be armed.

They carry arms,
and so must we.

They say that they have the law
on their side,

but their consciences should
tell them different.

Everything they do to us
is supposedly "lawful".

Behind that shield of the law,
they can be very bad and mean.

I really worry about the future
of this country.

We must continue our fight.

I've been in battle
so many times, now.

Every time I've been mortified.

I'm sure everyone else
feels exactly the same.

All our family is fighting,
so we can't work the fields.

Financially this has been
a real disaster for us.

And it's very hard for us
at the moment.

But we did get over WWII,
so we can overcome anything.

All I want is to protect
our children's future.

I'll fight till the end
if I have to.

But not alone.
We need each other.

We must never break
the bonds that unite us.

We must be strong
and try not to run away.

I've never experienced
this kind of feeling.

It's given us a wisdom
we never had before.

We've had to study about
politics and all,

and analyze things in
the deeper sense.

Like how can we make
a better world.

Once I was like those
who caved in.

I thought we'd have no effect
on the world at large.

Now I know what's right
and what's wrong.

And we musn't give in
to those who are wrong.

In that sense I'm more
complete than

those who have abandoned...
the battle.
