are fortresses built

to keep enemies out,

but Houska Castle
in the Czech Republic

seems to have been built
to keep something in.

Constructed
seven centuries ago

for unknown reasons,

it has passed through
a series of mysterious owners

from a traitor
executed by his king

to a Swedish occultist

to Nazis during World War II.

Known by locals
as the gateway to Hell,

the mysteries
of the castle's dark past

may have something to do
with the legend

that it was constructed
over the pit to Hell
as a barrier

designed to keep
dangerous creatures

from entering our realm.

I'm sending my film crew there

to find out
if this legend is true

and if this barrier
to the underworld...

is working.

the capital
of the Czech Republic

and you wouldn't
be surprised to see

an ancient castle here.

But my crew's destination
lies 40 miles to the north,

farther from civilization.

No one seems to know
who built Houska Castle
or why.

The reasons have
been lost to history.

When Houska Castle
was constructed
in the 13th century,

there were no nearby
trade routes
or borders to defend,

the usual reasons
for building a fortress
in this era.

And it wasn't built
over a water source,
like a spring,

which was usually
a prerequisite for castles

in order to survive sieges.

Why would you build
this castle here

unless it serves a deeper,
darker purpose?

My crew is greeted
at the front gate
by Miroslav,

the castle's current warden.

[in other language]

-[man] Hello.
-[in other language]

-Come in.
-[man speaking]

Not even Miroslav knows
why the castle was built.

The most beautiful thing
about Houska

is that you will
not learn anywhere

and nobody will tell you
who this castle was built by,

when, and most importantly,
why.

It's simply not possible
to classify this castle

into the more or less
generally valid patterns

pertaining to castle.

-[man] Thank you.

Since the castle
has nothing to guard outside,

they say that its purpose

is obviously
to guard something inside

to prevent something
from getting out of here

into the outside world.

[Zak] When the castle
was first constructed,

most of its defenses
were facing inward,

directed toward
the central courtyard

where perhaps the real focus
was on its chapel

with its entrance
opening into the courtyard.

And frescoes in the wall...

The chapel is dedicated
to Archangel Michael

who biblically signifies
the right-hand path

and all that is good
and righteous

and who does battle
with Satan himself

in the book of Revelation.

[man] So, this is
the origin of Satan?

So, it's only fitting

that an angel
that does battle with Satan

should be its patron.

Through this crack
in the earth,

Hell came forth.

[Zak]
It's hard to imagine

what life would've been like
at the time.

Looking out
into the darkness,

knowing the evil
that once walked the land

is creeping just
outside your door.

Gary Vasey
is a medium and author

who is an expert
on Houska Castle.

The biggest surprise
for this historian

is how little
written history there is

for such a prominent castle.

[Gary]
Imagine a thousand years ago,

this would've been a forest
with fissures and caves.

It would've been
a very strange landscape.

It seems there was
a wooden hunting lodge here

in the 9th century
and then suddenly,

there's mention of a castle
in 12-something.

But there's very little
history about this castle,

it's like it was a secret.

[producer]
So, what is your background

with this type
of research in history?

Well, first of all,
I'm a geologist,

Ph.D. geologist.

And for the last
three or four years,

I've been investigating
all kinds of paranormal sites

and their relationship
with earth energies.

And I've been to Houska
several times

and discovered a few things

that I think
are worthy of note.

Like many places
of archaeological interest,

this castle lies
on the intersection

of two earth energy lines.

[Zak]
These earth energy lines

are commonly referred to
as ley lines.

And centuries ago,

prominent buildings
like Houska

were often built
where these lines intersect.

Gary has dowsing rods
that he uses to detect them.

Here we go.
Here's the start of the line

and it heads
in a certain direction.

And someone at some point
in the history of the castle

has placed this
stone cross here.

Now, this is actually
on the center of the line

and the line goes
in that direction
into the chapel.

So, you see, this is a cross.

And around the other side
is a flat stone

that is in a similar
sort of position

with respect
to the earth energy line.

And this seems
to have some effect

on the type of energies
that you've got in the chapel,

which normally when you get

two earth energy lines
crossing

and they cross
often in chapels,

you get a very nice
sort of prayerful atmosphere.

But in this castle,
the closer I get
to the chapel,

the more dizzy and disoriented

and heavy I feel.

It's a very strange
negative energy.

[Zak]
Gary can think of no reason

for this cross
to be placed here,

exactly along the ley lines
outside the castle

other than as
a deliberate attempt

to modify the energies
for some unknown reason.

[Gary] The earth energies
that I'm picking up

these types of lines,

they're basically sound...

Low frequency sound waves

created by the earth's core
and outer core

and the differential
movement between them

because one's solid
and the other one's liquid.

And I think that
it has been used

for some other purpose

than just prayer
and meditation.

[Gary] So, this is the chapel.

And under the floor

should be the fissure
in the sandstone rocks.

The chapel was built over it

ostensively to stop

whatever was coming out of it
from escaping.

[creature growling]

[Gary] But this is the most
interesting one here.

This is a left-handed
female centaur

shooting an arrow at a human.

And left-handed,
of course, is a sign of evil.

And that's a very strange
depiction to have

in a chapel of any type.

Some of the depictions
are fairly common,

Saint Christopher,
things like this.

But this is rather unique

and very, very special.

It seems to suggest

that something has come out
of this fissure,

perhaps this centaur,
and that it's evil,

the left-handed nature.

But I don't like spending
very much time in here

'cause the energy really is...

I really feel it
quite strongly.

I feel quite dizzy, actually.

Before they sealed the gate
with the chapel,

a prisoner agreed
to be lowered into it

on a rope
in exchange for a pardon.

[Zak]
The prisoner was told

to report what he saw
in the pit,

but something
went very wrong.

[Gary] He was
lowered into the hole.

And after he disappeared,

he started to scream
and shout,

so they brought him back out.

He was hurt and white.

He had aged visibly

and he passed away
the next day.

He claimed
that the Hell down there

was far worse
than the punishment

that awaited him here.

As far as I know,
it was only done the once

and then they built the chapel
over the top of it.

And the castle was built

to basically keep
whatever is down there in,

as opposed to, you know,

what a normal castle
would be built for

as a defensive structure.

Somebody at some point in time

changed the way
the energy lines

come into this chapel.

We have a couple
of candidates.

One would be
the Swedish occultist

who was practicing

what were called
satanic rites here.

He was certainly
murdered in this building.

Yes. We can go
and take a look if you want.

Anything to get out of here.

God, yeah.

[Zak]
The Swedish occultist
known as Oronto

claimed he was experimenting
on an elixir

for eternal life.

But locals were so afraid
of his unholy experiments

that two hunters broke in

and murdered him
inside the castle's walls.

So, this is where
the Swedish guy

was supposed to be killed,
in this particular room.

And apparently, his apparition

sometimes appears
in this alcove here.

I've not seen anything,

but there is really
a strange vibe certainly

in the room, isn't there?
You feel that?

It's got a really strange echo
in here as well

all of a sudden.

-Can you hear that?

That's just started.

Oh, my goodness me.

Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

Something weird
going on right now.

[Zak] But Oronto
wasn't the only man said

to use the energies here

to conduct
his dark experiments.

During World War II,

the Nazis also tried
to bend it to their evil will

with black magic.

[Gary]
During the second World War,

this castle was
occupied by the Nazis,

the SS to be specific.

And there is a legend

that they conducted

occult experiments
and practices here.

In order to create or help
to create the master race.

This could be another source
for this strange atmosphere

and the misuse
of the earth energies

that you find at the castle.

And they supposedly used

Turkish soldiers
to guard the castle

because their
language barrier
with the locals

would help keep
the rituals a secret.

They attempted
to perform magic here

and the former minister
of culture told me

that the Germans tried to win
the second World War here

at the last minute.

Clearly, they failed.

He claimed that
during that ritual,

which evidently
got out of hand as well,

the Germans died here.

is inside the castle,

the more unnerved he becomes.

Although the chapel
was intended as a seal,

is it possible
that the many experiments

and occult practices
have weakened it over time,

allowing darkness
to seep through

and in some instances,
even attack the living?

Could the Nazis have reopened
the gateway to Hell

in their quest
to exploit its powers?

Considering the way
this castle seems
to draw evil into it,

it's no surprise the building
is said to be haunted.

Investigators even claimed
to have been attacked

by entities they can't see.

There are problems
with the gear.

Sounds didn't record properly.

A chandelier
started to make noises

for no good reason.

They even encountered
a sort of paranormal attack

where her colleague suddenly

experienced burns
on her stomach.

Her colleague Andre
described this burn

as an itching sensation,

which then started to fill
with some kind of liquid.

[Zak] Some claimed
that a contributing factor

to these malevolent forces

responsible for attacks
on the living

could have derived
from the discovery

just a decade ago
of a secret chamber.

It's this place.

[producer] Oh, my God.

[Zak] Miro believes
this room may be

from an even older structure

that existed here
before Houska Castle
was built over it.

[producer]
So, what would the purpose
of this room have been?

He doesn't know.

He thinks maybe
this is the gate
to other worlds.

Because there isn't a reason.

There had been
a lot of water here

and when they were all already
sweeping the earth and floor,

it suddenly collapsed
to that little window
over there.

[producer] If there is
a gateway to hell here,

this could be sitting
right above it.

The gateway to hell
is blocked by the chapel.

Thank God it holds fast.

[Zak] An empty room
without a purpose,

at least nothing
visible to the eye.

It's another mystery
in a castle

whose every purpose
is invisible

and open to speculation
and legend.

But there are some ways
we can confirm

at least some
of what has been said.

The following day,
I call in a ground sonar team

to see if this
gateway to hell
physically exists.

This smaller radar unit

can search as deep
as 30 feet underground.

Mmm-hmm.

[Zak] The shallow
radar search in the chapel

doesn't detect anything
that would confirm

the existence
of the giant crack

in the earth from the legend.

[man 1 in other language]

[man 2] Just sandstone layers.

Do you wanna
try in the courtyard?

Yeah, we can, why not?

[Zak]
They continue the search
in the main courtyard

where there's more room
to maneuver the device.

Still searching only as deep
as 30 feet underground.

About how far down is that?

[Zak] Finally, a success,

but the moment they try
to narrow the focus down

to a more specific area,
something strange happens.

[Zak] The system drops
the connection over and over.

[producer] It was working fine
until we came.

Yeah, it was...
It was working fine

inside the chapel, but...

Does this happen a lot?

Like anywhere else?

-[producer] Yeah.

Once the ground radar team

moves outside
to the front section
of the castle,

they have the room
to utilize their larger,

much more powerful
ground radar

which is capable
of detecting hundreds of feet

down below the surface.

These are the antennas.

This one is
a transmitting antenna.

With these antennas,
on the lower frequency,

we can see much deeper

than the higher
frequency antenna

that we measured with before.

Looks like there is
a big deep crack.

It's like 12 meters wide.

And we can see it
up to 200 meters underground.

So it goes down 200 meters?

Yes. Yes. Yes.

[Zak] Using he much more
powerful ground radar,

they have discovered a crack
that is over 600 feet deep.

[man] The crack between
the sandstone bodies

is filled with
different kind of materials.

[producer] The legend is they
did try to dump things down...

-Yeah, it--
-...the crack to fill it up

but they could never
hit the bottom.

That's pretty possible, yeah.

[Zak] The more powerful
equipment, too large
to fit inside the chapel,

has confirmed the existence
of a large anomaly
in the earth.

If construction partially
filled in the crack
in the chapel,

that would explain
why the smaller radar
wasn't able to detect it.

It looks like the crack is

going more down
up to 200 meters.

But it's possible
it goes much more down.

If you want to know
the direction
where the crack is going,

-we should do more measuring.
-[producer] Sure.

But for that,
we need longer antennas

to get on lower frequencies.

[producer] So it's so deep
it goes beyond

where your current equipment
can even detect?

-Yes, that's what I'm saying.

Exactly.

An abandoned hotel
in the Philippines

that is so dangerous,

it may have led to the death

of a film director.

On top of Dominican Hill,

in the picturesque Filipino
city of Baguio

sits a former hotel
with a past so evil,

visitors aren't allowed
inside after dark.

Originally built as a retreat
for priests and nuns,

this refuge became
a slaughterhouse
during World War II

and a hotel of death
in the 1970s.

But one death in particular
stands out.

In 2012,

a feature film was shot
in this building

and for everyone's safety,

the crew was told not
to discuss anything paranormal

and I fear that this warning
may not have been enough

to save the life
of the director.

I'm sending my crew
on a mission to find out

if this is building's
violent history

opened a rift between worlds

leading to the death
of this innocent man.

[Zak] The journey begins
with a four-hour drive

from Manila to Baguio

and my crew learns
there's an imminent threat

of an incoming
Category 5 typhoon.

So there's an incoming storm

expected to hit
the Philippines on Friday.

[Zak] Small grocers
and the occasional
wood carving shop

line the treacherous
mountain roadways

as we snake our way towards
the infamous Diplomat Hotel.

[Zak] This abandoned
hotel has such dark history,

it became the inspiration
for a horror film.

In 2012,

a filmmaker named
Christopher Ad. Castillo

filmed a movie here called
The Diplomat Hotel

based on the site's
infamous reputation

for dangerous
paranormal activity.

In an interview promoting
the film in 2014,

Castillo claimed
that during production

the paranormal activity
was more than his cast
and crew could handle.

When making a horror film,

you expect the terror
to remain on the set.

The crew didn't count
on something evil

following them home
and affecting their health.

I think it's possible
Castillo may have paid

for this film with his life.

Perched on a hilltop
with panoramic views
of Baguio,

the building
was constructed in 1911

as a retreat for Dominican
priests and nuns.

For decades, it was a place
of peace and refuge

until World War II,
when its history
took a dark turn

with the invasion
by the Japanese military

in December of 1941.

[Nonnette]
During World War II,

it became a refugee camp

to hide from the Japanese.

But the Japanese bombed
the city...

and they took over
this building

and they made it into
a prisoners of war camp.

[Zak]
Overtaking the building

was a bloody
and violent affair.

[Nonnette] During that time,
nuns were raped.

Priests were beheaded.

[Zak]
And the women and children

seeking shelter there
were butchered

in a brutal show of force
by the Japanese.

They claimed
one of the fountains
on the grounds

ran red with the blood
of those killed.

[Nonnette] Atrocities
against the friars,

the priests,
and the nuns who were here,

they could've done everything
and anything they wanted.

[Zak]
Horrific events like these

are never forgotten
by generations of locals.

Some feel a shudder
when they walk by

because evil still permeates
the building

and the land around it,

feeding the paranormal
activity.

[Nonnette] After that,
the Americans came

and when they carpet-bombed
the city,

the right side
of the building

was also damaged.

[Zak]
The battle to retake Baguio
from the Japanese

took the lives of 2,000
Japanese soldiers.

Some of their officers are
said to have died by suicide

inside this building
rather than surrender,

possibly adding even more
miserable souls

to wander the property.

After World War II,

the building sat empty
for several years

until it was remodeled
into a hotel.

[Nonnette] After World War II

when they were renovating it,

they found bones,

bones of the priests
and women.

[Zak] But by the 1970,
someone new moved in.

[Nonnette] In 1973,

they decided to sell
the property

and it was purchased
by a faith healer

named Antonio Agpaoa.

[Zak]
Agpaoa was a world-renowned
psychic surgeon.

He created the illusion
of performing surgery

with just his fingers,

incorporating sleight
of hand and animal blood,

he convinced his patients

that disease lesions
had been removed

and their incisions
spontaneously healed.

To some,
he was a miracle worker,

but to many,
he was a dangerous charlatan

who put the lives
of thousands in danger.

Is it possible
this barbaric conman

was driven by dark forces
within the Diplomat Hotel?

In 1982, Agpaoa mysteriously
died from a heart attack

when he was just 43 years old

while inside the structure.

And the hotel has sat
abandoned ever since.

He may have been a fraud,
but did his psychic work

unleash something extremely
dark and powerful here?

Although the building
lays dormant,

the evil inside continues
to affect those

who are willing to enter,
like the film crew

who shot the movie
The Diplomat Hotel.

The film's assistant director

agreed to meet my crew
to share

firsthand her experiences
during filming.

I sent my crew halfway
around the world

to secure
this vital interview.

However, at the last moment,
she has decided

not to show up,
leaving my producers

-unsure of how to proceed.

of situation now.

-The interview
we had with Mara,

she was the assistant director

of the film that was shot here
at the Diplomat,

She cancelled on us.

[Zak] Why did she cancel?

First she felt sick,
then she said,

"Well, can we come back,
you know, later?"

And now she said
she has a prior engagement.

[Zak] Have you tried calling
other crew members?

[Mike] No other crew member
will talk to us
about this place.

[Zak] They what?
They won't come either?

-No.
-[Zak] I don't understand

because she was all...

into doing this,
so I don't understand.

[Joseph] I kind of feel
like it maybe has something

to do with
the director dying.

[Zak] Do you think
she's too scared

of the place to even go there

and talk about it because
of what happened to him?

[Joseph] This place weighs
heavy on everybody.

-I don't know.
-[Zak] I just wanna be careful

like, you know, we don't know

the whole story
about this place

and what happened
in this whole film crew

and if something
at this location

did factor into the
director's death, who knows?

Maybe they know something
that we don't.

And I saw the interview
with the director,

kind of disturbing
to listen to him

knowing that
he's now deceased.

And if he knows something
that this place has...

is doing to them
or has done to them,

like the least
that she could do

is at least speak up about it
so that we're not putting

our crew members in
any type of spiritual risk.

It just doesn't sit
well with me.

Something very odd
is going on.

I would just say be very
careful there, you guys.

Be very careful
because we don't know the...

What's really there,
you know?

We don't know what energy

that you guys
are really dealing with.

And for me to get a call
at 2:00 in the morning,

I know it's gotta be
serious, so.

The film's director,
Christopher Ad. Castillo,

claims that his assistant
director had carried on

a conversation
with a member of their crew,

who she later learned
wasn't on set that day.

This makes me wonder
if the Diplomat Hotel

is haunted by a dark entity
known as a doppelganger.

Doppelgangers replicate
a living person,

but cast no shadows.

Encountering, one can lead
to illness or even death.

The assistant director
who didn't show up tonight

fell ill for two weeks
after leaving

the Diplomat Hotel
the last time.

And the director?
He died prematurely

at the age of 54
from what his uncle claimed

was cardiac arrest
after shooting a film.

Could whatever
attached itself
to the assistant director

have done the same thing
to Castillo?

Was the assistant director
lucky to break free
while Castillo was not?

Did filming
at the Diplomat Hotel
cost him his life?

We also learned that
Castillo's father,

who was also a filmmaker,

died from a heart attack
the same year

this movie was in production.

I wonder if the assistant
director still fears
a similar fate

and has decided
to stay away from this place.

Other members
of the film's cast and crew

reported unexplained
phenomena here,

and none of the other
crew members

that we've reached out to,
have even responded to us.

And now, I'm concerned
for my own crew.

[Zak] We spend the better
part of the next day

attempting to reach
the assistant director
with no luck.

Fortunately, we get a tip.

There's a local
paranormal team
called Strange Shadows

that has previously
experienced

a terrifying investigation
of the Diplomat.

They agreed to accompany us
back to the hotel.

Zarckaroo is a paranormal
investigator,

Casey is an empath,

and Api is a psychic medium.

They all feel compelled
to return,

somehow drawn back
to the dangerous structure.

They know we're coming.

This place has
a very unique history.

And for me, it's creepy.

'Cause, you know,
a lot of people died there.

[Zarckaroo] I've been
to this place before.

We just feel
this strange energy,

where... it feels like
someone is begging on you.

And my friend almost
got possessed.

A lot of people get possessed
in that place,

so we need to watch out.

[Zak]
Hearing these locals tell us

possessions are common
at the Diplomat

might explain what happened
to the movie crew,

but this team
of investigators say

they will put
their own health at risk

to help the tortured souls
trapped at the hotel.

The team gears up
and heads to the entrance,

encountering a caretaker
of the property.

I work since 2005

to clean this building.

When I'm working, it seems

somebody's watching me,

embracing me. I feel ghost.

[Zak] Rufina only works
during daylight hours

and is terrified to be alone
on the property.

Territorial spirit living
in here.

about headless apparitions

are chilling, because there
are headless apparitions

in Japanese culture
called Rokurokubi,

whose heads can detach
and fly around
and attack people,

sometimes even drinking
their victims' blood.

This place was occupied
by Japanese soldiers.

Have they been replaced
by Rokurokubi dark entities?

The Diplomat Hotel quickly
gained a reputation

for paranormal activity
as locals snuck in

and found more than
they were ready to handle.

With this danger in mind,

the investigators prepare
by protecting themselves

before they enter
the building.

This could be dangerous
because no one

is ever allowed to enter
the Diplomat at night

due to the darker energies
that emerge.

of a chicken
to the restless entities

that reside in the hotel

to protect the team
as they investigate.

looking at us.
-[Zarckaroo] Yup.

[Casey] Yeah.

[Zak] Mikko,
the team's skeptic,

is photographing
the courtyard

when Leo oddly reaches
into the water fountain

that ran red from the blood
of the victims here.

Leo knows never to touch
the fountain's water.

The team is shocked.

Then, strangely,
he smells the water.

-Uh-oh.
-[Casey] It's just black.

[Api] He's using a flash,
but he's capturing nothing.

It's just black.

[Zarckaroo] It's weird, right?

[Mikko] It's still black.

[Zak] The team feels
a spirit in the courtyard

is preventing them
from taking its picture.

And within moments,
other members of the team

begin to feel
an energy shift.
