If your idea of a great
yacht is a vessel with

good speed, a shallow draft

and looks that stand
out from the crowd,

then you should really
take a look at the 120 foot

Danube Marine Grandeur.

We met up with sales
broker Kristen Klein

who told us all about it.

Grandeur is 120 feet.

She has a 24 foot beam as
well as a 6 foot 11 inch draft.

Her GRT is 224.

She has a top speed of 19
knots and can cruise at 16 knots.

So the main deck aft has a
nice seating area dining table

for up to 10.

Entering through two
electric sliding doors,

you enter into the
full beam main salon

with seven and
a half foot ceiling.

To starboard is a
L-shaped bar area as well as

L-shaped sofa and two armchairs.

To the port side, you have
a nice dining area for four

as well as under
cabinet storage.

There's a refrigerator,
wine storage and ice maker.

Further forward, you have
a dining area that can be

closed off by a wood
accent and transition wall.

It features granite
floors, circular table,

and it really is a
beautiful area on the boat.

You can close it off to
either the main salon and face

the galley or vice versa. You
can close it off to the galley.

To port is the galley
and in the galley

you have Miele appliances as
well as sub-zero refrigeration.

And then to starboard
side from the main salon,

you go through a
companionway with a seahorse

etched glass door.
There's also a day head

in the companionway as
well as access to the flybridge.

Further forward, you enter
the split level master stateroom

which features an offset
king-size master bed

as well as u-shaped
seating area.

There's a cabinet at
the foot of the master bed

that has a TV on a
lift that can be rotated,

you know, 180 through 60 degrees

so you can view it
from any position.

Further forward, you go
down a set of four stairs

into a large dressing area
that has eight hanging closets

as well as shelf space.
There's also a makeup vanity.

Further forward, you have
the ensuite with shower,

jacuzzi tub, there's
also two double sinks

and a toilet and bidet.

The additional guest
staterooms are located a midship

down a staircase with handrails.

You enter into a guest foyer.

Forward, you have the VIP
stateroom with queen-size bed.

To starboard side, you
have nice cabinet storage.

On the port side
is a seating area.

Cabin also features
an ensuite to port.

Further aft, you have
the two remaining cabins,

queen to port and
the twin to starboard.

Both cabins feature
their own ensuite

as well as hanging
lockers and storage.

You can access the
flybridge from a set of stairs

on the main deck aft or
through the pilot house.

The flybridge can be
fully enclosed if you desire.

There's a large bar up there
as well as a L-shaped sofa.

There's also a driving
station. Further aft,

you have a large
jacuzzi and a garage

which can be also a movie
screen unlike should you desire.

The crew accommodations
are located aft

through a door to the port side.

There's three cabins down
below, a double for the captain

and then two cabins
with over-under bunks.

There's also a crew
mess with a microwave

refrigeration as well as two
sets of washers and dryers.

And all the cabins
have their own ensuite.

Behind the scenes with
America's cup weight engineer

as she explains
the bold protocol.

The weight rules in the America's
Cup are defined by the class rules

and the measurement procedures.
So, the yacht needs to fall

between 6,200
kilograms and 6,160.

So there's a very small
window for us to fall in the mass

and with regards to center
of gravity there's a very

small window there
also. We need to be at

nine meters or nine
meters thirty-five.

Everything that we have to weigh
in order to meet the weight rule

on the yacht is a
platform, a hull of a boat

and the systems that we put
inside of it. The foils are simply

in the foil arms and wings,
the mass and the sails,

not forgetting the crew and
the equipment that they carry.

The design process starts
with going through the rule

and looking at all the
one design components

and the rules for weight
that's dictated from that.

Budgets are defined from
different areas of the yacht.

The America's Cup have a
measurement committee and

they are governed
throughout design process

and there are three
documents that

denote our rules and regulations
that we have to adhere to.

So, it's the technical
regulations, the class rule

and the measurement
procedures. And

the measurement
procedures basically tell us

what needs to be
measured, the metrics

that we need to abide by
and when it needs measuring.

So throughout the design process
some of the rules may be up for

interpretation and there's a
lot back and forth between

the measurement procedures
and the different teams. And then

as we get towards
testing, we'll be

weighing the boat fairly
regularly to make sure we're gonna

hit our measurement
target when we get to racing.

And then throughout racing,
the yacht will be weighed

quite frequently and we'll
have a measurement committee

coming around all teams making
sure that we're going through

the measurement procedures
and making sure we're

hitting all the targets.
Throughout the design process,

I will be there tracking
the data and also

giving feedback on
some of the designs,

maybe looking to also
the architecture of the yacht

to hit odd values with
central gravity and mass.

Their sailors have their
own weight to manage.

So they all have to fall
under a certain mass and

if they don't hit their own
targets, then we're constrained

in crew configuration. The process
for moving from design weight,

which is calculated
weight, to actual weights,

it's quite difficult with
composites. We initially start

with our calculations, then
when the parts are made,

there's quite a lot of
overbuild to take into account

with composites, but we
weigh the part and we'll trim off

and we'll just literally have
to follow the process through.

Centre of gravity is an
important one to us 'cause

there's obviously
an optimum position.

So, getting the weight
right is super important,

not just for rule, but for
performance. We're constantly

looking at the design, trying
to figure out ways to alter

the architecture, mainly
with the systems and moving it

around the yacht to try and hit
our target. The systems that go

into the yacht are initially
calculated and positioned in

software that we use. And
once they are manufactured

and they're bought in, they will
be assembled to a certain stage

and then they'll be waged
before they go in the yacht.

It's quite important that
we catch the build on time.

Some of the crucial one design
parts that we have to put on

the yacht are the
FCS, the foil arms

and the media equipment for
the race. Each foil arm weighs

in at around half a ton.
Then we've got the media

equipment, which is
around 112 kilograms.

And then we have the foil
can system that weighs in at

343 kilograms. And that
system sits in the centre

of the yacht and controls
the foils themselves.

Redundancy in the weight is
super important. You may have seen

in the last cup, American
Magic managed to put a hole

in their hull. Critical
repairs like that will cost us

a lot of weight. We need
to prepare ourselves for all

the virtualities. The
rules are so bold

because they're really quite
constraining regarding trying to

to get a six-ton yacht
into something that's fast,

structurally sound and
something that's gonna

break history. It's incredibly
challenging for everyone

in the team, but the aim is
to win the America's Cup.

Moonen, the shipyard
that can stretch its yachts,

use moisturiser in their
construction process

and have soundproofing
that is so efficient that even

a decibel meter can't
detect the sound on board.

Filming at this shipyard is
always a fascinating experience.

The last time I was here
we took a look all over

the Moonen 110. The time before

we showed her in construction,

along with one of
these, the 122 foot

Moonen Martinique. This time

we are going to go
on a journey together,

the incredibly personal journey

of a yacht owner's
experience at the shipyard

from drawing board to delivery.

To make any journey
worthwhile though,

it's good to know what's
at the end of it. So sit back,

make yourself comfortable
and let me tell you all about

the Moonen Martinique.

There is nothing on the water
quite like a Moonen Martinique.

The designer, Renee van
der Velden, has given her

a very distinctive, very
identifiable profile indeed.

Understated in her elegance,

this is not a yacht
with wild futuristic lines,

balconies popping
out of every bulwark

or spitting up a rooster
tail from her transom.

She is an exquisitely
proportioned,

magnificently manufactured,
Dutch engineered

masterpiece that is recognized

by the connoisseurs
of the yachting world

as being best in her class.

Her 17 knots top
speed is impressive,

her 4000 nautical
mile range at 10 knots,

more than respectable.

But her greatest accolades
of all are the words

of admiration from
owners and crew who

praise her build quality
and develop a close

relationship with
the shipyard team.

That and the fact that six of
them have been sold since 2018.

But if that is the
result at journey's end,

where does it all start?

Let's take a look at hull
number seven of the series,

the next available
model for sale,

to consider the
journey she will take,

and the impact that
Nona can have upon her

during the construction process.

Simply put, hull
number seven right now

is just that, a hull.

At the time of filming, she's
been built by welding together

hundreds of steel plates to
form a tried and tested shape

that has been proven to
provide the desired performance

and stability for
guests on board.

At the same time,
in a separate facility,

the superstructure is
being built from aluminium

and the two will come
together in the shipyard

where they shall be
joined in marine matrimony,

never to be parted.

Now in the journey of a
Moonen Martinique's life,

there are certain things
that cannot be changed,

certain things that make
it a Moonen Martinique

rather than a different
yacht altogether.

The hull shape of
course is one such thing,

but so is the naval engineering,

the specifications and position of
the engines, watertight bulkheads,

and other elements that
are essential to the safety

and performance of the vessel.

The future owner
of hull number seven

can be given the steering
wheel to take the project

in one direction or another,

but they can't take a
couple of wheels off

and call it a motorbike.

One of the most
amazing interiors I have

ever seen on a yacht
was on a Moonen.

She was called Sofia
and walking into her

main salon was like
entering an alabaster cave.

The curves, shapes and textures

had been drawn up by art
line and executed by Moonen

in a remarkable
masterclass in translating

a designer's concept into
a piece of functional art.

In the Martinique yachts
they have continued to show

incredible diversity
in their designs.

The first Martinique, Brigadoon,

was actually sold to the
owner of a design company

who put his unique
style on the interiors.

Another one, Cocoon, almost
looks like a different yacht

with a strong
Scandinavian influence.

And the third hull,
Botti, on the other hand,

could have a video
all to itself to recount

the amazing materials employed

to pull off this stunning look.

All of this takes time.

To illustrate just
how much time,

take a look at these
Moonen craftsmen,

fine sanding and polishing
these unique panels

that are destined to
be fitted to the stairwell

of one of the Martiniques
in construction.

It will take them days
to perfect every panel,

but they are just the last
link of a very long chain.

I was shown this never
before seen rendering

of the main deck
salon of a Martinique,

and as you can see the
designer included textured panels,

this time appearing to
depict waves. To me,

they look like the kind of
waves that you may see

in a sand dune, a very
unique image plucked

straight from the
imagination of the designer.

Straight from the
imagination and onto

the computer program
of this man, Luke.

He will use CAD
programming to create each

panel in three
dimensions before making

some test pieces on
Moonen's CNC cutting machine,

and only when
each panel is perfect

will the final pieces
be cut, painted,

and then sanded and
polished to perfection

by the craftsmen
that we saw earlier.

So, achieving something
that is both beautiful

and perfectly
executed takes time.

It takes time to conceive,
it takes time to design,

time to create, to
perfect, and to fit.

And the sooner you
make a decision on

interior design as an
owner, the more feasible it is

that the shipyard
can satisfy you.

Talking of fitting,
I visited two

Martinique yachts already close
to the end of their journeys,

and it was fascinating to see the
differences in each one of them.

On Moonen 204,
which is the sixth model

in the Martinique range, there
was a tremendous amount

of activity going on board.
The yacht was well into

the outfitting stage.

Remember that
as wiring, plumbing,

and machinery is being
fitted on board the vessel,

in another facility, cabinetry,

ceiling panels, wall panels, and
even stairwells are being built.

Moonen do all of
this work in-house

so they do not have to
rely upon subcontractors.

The time comes when these
need to be bought on board,

checked for size, taken off
and tweaked if necessary,

and then finally
installed. This is

a tremendously busy time
as all kinds of craftsmen

are coming together to see
the final result of their work.

Next to Moonen
204 is Moonen 203,

the fifth hull in the series, and
although they are only about

10 weeks apart in their
timelines, you can really see

the differences with
203 already showing

finished cabinetry,
with ceiling panels fitted,

and the final coat of paint
applied to the superstructure.

The differences don't
end there though,

since the owners of each
yacht have steered their own

personal journey
down different paths.

In the bathrooms I saw an elegant
marble finish on one yacht,

and this curious and inviting
mother of pearl finish in another.

This is not a material that
you can find in a local store

or online, this is the
result of a designer

with a clear idea
of what they want,

and a shipyard who are eager to
find it or make it if necessary.

Again, it takes time.

The layouts of both yachts
too have notable changes.

In one yacht the owner's
stateroom bed faces forward

and positions a
walk-in closet inboard.

On the other it faces aft and
places the closet to starboard.

All of these changes
need to be studied.

Designs need to be drawn
up, then executive drawings.

The cabinetry has to be
built, fitted, tweaked, refitted.

It takes a long time.

Moonen 205 is
already in construction,

and Moonen absolutely have
the financial means necessary

to complete the yacht
with or without an owner.

But what a shame it would be

to miss out on the
opportunity of joining Moonen

on such a personal
and inspiring journey.

The shipyard are
accustomed to having to take

a few steps back in
order to rebuild the yacht

the way that you want
it, if it's feasible to do so.

But every change
that's made can impact

the delivery time and
the cost to the client,

maybe to you.

Far better to take the
steering wheel early,

choose the flooring that
you want, the light fittings

of your choice, paint the hull

the color of your
Bentley, keep Luke busy

designing and making custom
three-dimensional wall panels.

Take your time

and build your Moonen
exactly the way you want it.
