"It was just a nightmare."

But it wasn't.

That very same night, I would discover

it was all too real.

Five people found dead inside apartment!
Read it here first!

We turn now to Mexico,
where the last few hours

have been filled with outrage
over the murder of a photojournalist.

[anchor] Hundreds of people
across the country have been protesting

to demand justice for their colleague
and the four women murdered alongside him.

[reporter 1] Nadia, as well as Rubén,

had accused the governor of Veracruz
as the author of threats against them.

[reporter 2] Rubén Espinosa Becerril
had gone public

about being a target of political threats,

so he moved out of the State of Veracruz
to Mexico City.

[man] When we got the message
that it had happened in Mexico City,

in a neighborhood like Narvarte,

in broad daylight,
against two politically displaced people,

as well as against three other women,

it was very disturbing
and caused not fear but terror.

STATE-SANCTIONED MURDER

[reporter 3] Other victims include
a woman of Colombian origin,

a beauty school student,
and a domestic worker.

They're focusing more on saying,

"The girls did bad things,"
and, "The girls are to blame."

[projector whirring]

[reporter 4] They used kitchen knives,
cables, tape, firearms,

and shot the victims
in the back of the head.

Each one of the victims sustained

a head wound caused by gunshots
from a nine-millimeter caliber firearm.

[reporter 1] Authorities have claimed
robbery as a motive

for the killings to the press.

Although they were not able
to elaborate on what was allegedly stolen

from the apartment.

We still don't have information
on what was stolen.

And I will ask the authorities
what they're afraid of

and who they're covering for.

Since we no longer trust the authorities,
we'll investigate what happened ourselves.

They say it was all a coincidence
that they were all there together.

But is it really a coincidence
or the perfect crime?

IN BROAD DAYLIGHT: THE NARVARTE CASE

[breeze blowing gently]

[woman] She could always sense things.
Always.

The last time we went to Acapulco,
she seemed sad, depressed.

Like in this photo, she wanted to smile,
but her eyes, they look swollen and sad.

[somber music playing]

[camcorder whirring]

[woman] After a few drinks,
they were all chatting, and my mom said,

"I'm not going to live past 40,
and I'll be broadcast on TV."

[speaking inaudibly]

The third victim was a domestic worker
originally from the State of Mexico.

NAUCALPAN, STATE OF MEXICO

From the beginning,
the press would set my mom aside,

always referring to her
as "the domestic worker."

They never even said her name, Alejandra.

I honestly don't know who referred my mom
to the apartment building.

All she said was, "I have a cleaning job
in Narvarte tomorrow."

"Take care of Arly."

I remember that morning, she woke me up,

gave me a kiss and said,
"God bless you." And she left.

[Gabriela] I tried calling her,
and it did ring at first,

but then it stopped.

I called her at 3:00 p.m.

According to the records,

that's the exact time
they were all killed.

I called her
at the same time they were being murdered.

I need to know what happened to my mom.
She was just working.

She wasn't doing anything else.

Lex told me you just had a nose job.

That was Yesenia's voice.

And sometimes…

I listen to her voicemails…

…because I'm afraid I'll forget
what her voice sounds like,

her laughter,

her bad language.

And holding her phone…

is like touching her because…

she'd always do this

when she was texting.

This is the last phone I saw her with.

[camera shutter clicks]

She was invited to Mexico,

and I told her Mexico City
is very dangerous

and asked how she could go there alone.

But if I told her no, she'd go anyways.

I just wanted to stay in touch.

[ominous music playing]

[Indira] Then she sent me
the address in Narvarte.

She said it was the safest place
for her to be.

She said it was quieter,
and she didn't feel unsafe there.

She looked happy.
With no issues whatsoever.

Yesenia was 18 years old.

And this is the only picture
of them together, Mile and Yesenia.

Mile lived in that apartment
for a short time.

Yesenia hadn't known her long.

Mile was a beautiful woman,
older than Yesenia.

So I imagine Mile was
what she wanted to be in the future.

[reporter] On the day of the murders,
the perpetrators used a red Mustang

belonging to the Colombian,
Mile Virginia Martín.

However, everyone in the apartment
knew her as "Nicole"

and was unaware
of what she did for a living.

[dog barking in distance]

[horn beeps]

-There you go.
-[man] Thanks.

You got it.

Fifteen days before she died,

I was working at La Virgen
in Patio Bonito, selling sweets.

It was a gray morning. It was raining.

The last day I talked to her,

she told me she was gonna get me
out of selling sweets.

As she spoke to me, I could see the pain
she felt from seeing me selling that.

I told her not to worry about it
because I loved my job.

That was the last time
I had a heart-to-heart with her,

and it was all because of my candy.

That was the last time I talked to her.

[gentle music playing]

[woman] "Mile."

"My angel."

"I miss you so much."

"It's been more than six years
with no justice and without knowing

exactly what happened on July 31, 2015."

"The day your life was taken away
and your wings were savagely clipped."

"There are no words and no actions

that can justify those criminals

who shut your eyes forever."

[camera flash charging]

[camera shutter clicks]

[motorcycle engine revving]

[Angie] "I want the world to know
how proud we are of you."

"You were a wonderful sister
and a strong warrior."

[Larry] My sister lived here
until she was 12.

Ever since then,
she never came back here again.

[somber instrumental music playing]

She said goodbye to us.

She said she had
some sort of a modeling contract.

[Larry] Good morning, everybody.

When we talked to her,
she sounded very positive

"I'm living in a nice place
in a good neighborhood."

"I already bought a new car."

[reporter] One of the perpetrators fled
in a car belonging to the Colombian.

BEING COLOMBIAN IS NOT A CRIME
#JU5TICE

[Larry] In many places,
Colombians are labeled

and blamed for certain things.

She was used by the perpetrator

to divert attention
away from who actually did it.

"She's Colombian.
She's just a drug dealer."

They've always used these things
against Colombians to make us look bad

and treat us as criminals.

They tried to do that with my sister,
and it's just not right.

We think it had something to do
with the journalists.

[reporter] On Monday, family and friends
laid the slain Mexican journalist to rest.

He had sought protection from threats
made in the State of Veracruz.

[camera shutters clicking]

[shakily] Rubén, brother,

I dared to show up today because I know
that's what you would have wanted.

You fought for all of us
and left as a warrior.

[mourners applauding]

[Patricia] When I found out
he was already here in Mexico City,

I asked him what was wrong

because normally, he would let us know
that he was coming to the city,

but this time, he didn't.

He said that things in Xalapa were tough

and he didn't know
how long he was gonna stay here.

He asked me not to tell our mother,
and he had interviews to attend to, but…

Things are tough in Veracruz,
as we all know.

Especially if you criticize
Javier Duarte's bad government.

I fled because I was being intimidated.

Something was wrong in Xalapa.

I knew it wasn't the calmest,
safest place to be,

but I could never imagine the magnitude
of what Rubén was going through.

I met Rubén in Veracruz. In Xalapa.

This was in 2009.

PHOTOJOURNALIST

He had moved there
to look for a job opportunity…

[crowd cheering]

…and found one
covering the Duarte campaign,

back when he was running for governor.

He was a photographer
covering his whole campaign.

-[camera beeps]
-[camera shutter clicks]

[Duarte] One, two, three,

four, five, six,

seven, eight, nine…

Action!

A close friend of mine
who owned a digital media outlet

told me he found a photojournalist
who could cover my campaign.

And Rubén was essentially
part of that press staff.

[camera shutter clicking]

[Nicolás] Rubén made his voice heard.
He was a rebel.

He didn't take things lying down,
and they didn't appreciate that at all.

They didn't want to deal with him,
so they hounded him

until he was out of a job.

[camera shutter clicking]

So Rubén began knocking
on doors of other news outlets,

and that's when he had his awakening.

LAND AND LIBERTY

[indistinct chatter]

This hall was Rubén Espinosa's office
for about four years.

Rubén always sat here.

The first of December 2010,
I swore in as the constitutional governor

of the Free and Sovereign State
of Veracruz of Ignacio de la Llave.

I swear to perform my duties as governor,

which the people have bestowed upon me,
with loyalty and patriotism.

Back then, I was a young, 36-year-old man.

That's when the hell of Duarte began.

But let's not forget that the hell
of Bermúdez Zurita also began.

As the person overseeing
Veracruz's Department of Public Safety,

I appoint Arturo Bermúdez Zurita.

"Captain Storm" was his nickname
inside the organization.

A dark character.

Machiavellian, narcissistic, arrogant.

Authoritarian.

The truth is that Arturo gained my trust.

And not only my trust but my affection.

[Bermúdez Zurita] You will be
the emissaries of the work we are doing.

Our society, which we serve,
will trust our state police once again.

[camera shutter clicking]

Rubén had a photo and document catalog
and files of missing persons.

MISSING

Of teachers' protests.

[crowd clamoring]

Of unfinished public work. Everything.

[crowd clamoring]

But he chose that photograph.

[camera shutter clicks, echoes]

PROCESO
VERACRUZ, STATE WITHOUT LAW

[Noé] Neither him nor I thought
it'd make that front cover.

[Duarte] My little governor's hat.

Good picture.

I really like it.

I have it framed.

-[interviewer] Oh, really? Where?
-Yeah.

Well, it's somewhere. [laughs]

I don't know where.

Day after day,
we live with nonexistent justice.

[crowd chanting]

There's no real justice in this state.

The state institutions don't exist.

[dramatic music playing]

[demonstrators clamoring]

What prevails in this state is corruption.
What prevails is fear.

What prevails is deceit.

[camera shutter clicks]

[crowd clamoring]

[woman] Take off your armor
and come here, motherfuckers!

We're workers!

[police sirens wailing]

My name is Nadia Vera.

We will hold Javier Duarte de Ochoa,
state governor, and his whole cabinet

entirely accountable for what could happen
to those of us involved

in organized movements,

whether they be student, academic,
or civil society as a whole.

We've seen an increase in the number
of disappearances since 2010

when Duarte took office.

Three state police officers took them,
and we haven't heard from them since.

[woman] We are here representing
all the mothers who have lost a loved one.

Government officials, do your job!

We need to do something.

We can't have children living here,
expecting to be kidnapped.

This is her at a demonstration.

She's right up front. She organized it.

-[man, in Spanish] They took them alive!
-[demonstrators] We want them alive!

I THINK… THEREFORE,
THEY MAKE ME DISAPPEAR!

[Nadia, in English]
When violence starts to unfold,

I worry that we turn into
exactly what they want us to be.

[man] Don't forget all of our comrades
who've been killed for telling the truth!

This is why we're forced
to wear hoods outside.

This is an object
from the Zapatista protest.

Since she's from Chiapas,
she bought this ski mask

and wore it
in the Veracruz demonstrations.

[Nadia] You're sold like merchandise.

Women are sold into sex trafficking.

Young people are taken
to become cartel members.

[Mirtha] "Arm yourself and be violent
Beautifully violent"

"Until everything bursts"

Disappearances are occurring
on a daily basis.

Murders, kidnapping, violence…

[demonstrators shouting]

We rented a room in a hotel
right in front of the main plaza.

Then we put out a large poster that said…

It said…

"Duarte, we're watching you."

"The people don't forgive you."

We tied it up, put it out, and ran.

We were caught by the police

as well as undercover agents
known as "the Ears."

They threatened to kill us
and told us we were being detained

without any prior records.

-No press, no cameras, nothing.
-No press, no cameras, nothing at all.

They were ready to really hurt us
until our savior, Rubén…

appeared with his giant camera
and started capturing everything.

Clack! Tack! Tack! Tack Tack Tack!

"I'm with the press.
Where are you taking them?"

[camera shutter clicks]

Nadia grabbed him and said,
"You, come here and take pictures, quick!"

"They're taking them!"

She was very excited when she met him.

She said, "I just met this photographer
who works at Proceso Magazine."

We just wanted to demonstrate peacefully,
but they shoved us and forced us to react.

I found a photographer
and asked him to take pictures.

And thanks to him
and his camera taking those pictures,

they stopped beating peaceful protesters.

There were also photos published
of Nadia's arrest.

[camera shutter clicking]

I was detained
by undercover police officers

dressed in civilian clothing.

They beat me
and took me away in a patrol car.

[indistinct radio chatter]

[Nadia] They were ordered to round us up
and identify us to know who was involved.

In the end,
it was still a forced disappearance.

They didn't arrest me,

but they did arrest two other women
from our group in the San José quarters,

where they were stripped of their clothing

and forced to do squats, up and down,
while the officers watched.

There's so much humiliation of women

all because women
are seen as the spoils of war,

and are treated as such.

[Rubén] I continued taking pictures
until a Veracruz government employee

approached me.

He grabbed me by the neck
and told me to stop taking pictures.

And if I didn't, I'd end up
like my friend Regina Martínez.

7-7-1963 4-28-2012

The first red flag
was the murder of Regina Martínez.

Rubén called me
and said we should get together soon

because, by the look of things,
any one of us could've been next.

aren't used to demonstrations.

It shouldn't be normal for us.

Javier Duarte will be remembered
by our collective memory

for the administration in which
the most journalists have been murdered.

During his term,
17 journalists were murdered.

was heavily complicit,

with instructions coming
from inside the government

to murder journalists
or make them disappear.

This is what Rubén was protesting.

And it ultimately led him
to be targeted by Bermúdez Zurita.

We are living
in a state of absolute violence,

where the real danger comes
from simply being a young person.

Nadia lived in this apartment building.

Here, we're the problem
and an inconvenience,

both to the government
and the… and the cartel.

This is where they broke into her home.

-[birds singing]

FIGHT

[Jair] She was very messy.

Her stuff was always lying
all over the place.

But the fact that her cables
had been properly rolled up

was what made her realize
someone had been there.

They cleaned absolutely everything.

They cleaned her bathroom,
folded her clothes,

organized her personal things.

They left everything neat.

Completely spotless.

[Jair] She noticed
the shower floor was wet.

Someone took a shower in her bathroom.

They were saying, "We know who you are."

"We know where you live."

"We can."

After that, she thought,
"I really don't want this."

"I don't want to be afraid anymore."

"I can't go home by myself anymore."

"So I'm leaving this place."

"I can't be here anymore."

And she left because she wanted to.

Because everyone has
the right to a life of peace.

To enjoy what they want.

To relax and ride a bike, if they want.

So she went to Mexico City.

FIGHT
RESIST

[Mirtha] When my daughter came home…

we took a long walk
to the Lakes of Montebello.

That was our last trip together
as a family.

Since that day, I couldn't come here.

It reminded me too much of her,
and I needed time to heal.

I PLANT YOUR HEART
IN THIS NOTEBOOK…

[Mirtha] I needed to make
some sort of ritual to bring me back.

To speak with her through the water,

through the forest,

and put our minds at ease.

Your departure from Veracruz, Rubén,
what conditions led to that decision?

I fled because I was being intimidated.

The attack on the students
had just happened,

where they were beaten with machetes.

[camera shutter clicks]

[tense music playing]

[man] Obviously, we did not support
Duarte's regime.

The demonstrations were
becoming more and more intense.

As a consequence,

the state increased
its repressive activities…

and began spying on people

They broke into people's houses.

[camera shutter clicks]

[distant sirens wailing]

The attack happened
at night, around one o'clock.

I saw the police lights.

[Edith] Just eight people?

I went inside to check on my friends.

Almost all of them were in shock.

[Edith] Take a look at the boys, please?
They're very badly injured.

-[man 1] Yeah, of course.
-[man 2] Hey there.

Just relax and lay down.

Rubén arrived asking questions,
but he wasn't looking for a news story.

More like, "Who did this?
Is everyone okay? What happened here?"

He wasn't doing it for work.
They were his friends.

We were his friends.

Don't you have any family?

This attack was carried out
by a group of ten men,

armed with high-caliber weapons,

machetes, bats, and sticks.

They beat and stabbed
the young men with machetes

as they were celebrating a birthday.

We place full blame
on Governor Javier Duarte de Ochoa

and Secretary of Public Safety
Arturo Bermúdez Zurita.

Young men were beaten,
according to official reports.

-They said they didn't receive assistance.
-Uh, no. The situation didn't call for it.

[reporter] Because this isn't
the first time this has happened.

In Coatzacoalcos, there are also reports
of young people disappearing.

And there seems to be connections
between police activity and--

Well, it's very easy to point fingers.

What I can tell you is
that we're doing our work properly.

The Attorney's Office
is still investigating.

The young men said they were cooking food
for poor children.

Their neighbors said
they were partying very loudly.

I'm not in a position
to say anything for sure,

but I can tell you we strongly deny
that the Department of Public Safety

took any part in the incident.

[Giovanna] I mean,
we were reading them loud and clear.

They were totally prepared to terminate,

kill, assassinate the few they had
in their sights.

They already knew where I lived.
They had my phone number.

They knew who I talked to,
who I dated, where I worked.

Rubén started being followed home
by officers dressed in civilian clothing.

In the morning,
there was someone staring at me.

I didn't think much of it,
so I went to work as I normally do.

When I stepped outside, I saw three men

standing at the corner of my house
next to a running taxi.

When I looked up,
I noticed one of them took a picture of me

and signals to me saying,
like, "What's up?"

Rubén called me
and said, "I need to see you."

"Sure, let's meet tonight."

"No, right now."

"Oh wow," I thought.
"What could be so important?"

As I walked past them, they approached me

and pushed me
with their bodies… blocking my path.

-They wanted you to know they were there?
-[Rubén] That he was there.

-And it was you they were after?
-Yeah, that's it.

And while they were targeting us,

the pressure starts to burst,
starting with Rubén.

In this current state of things,

we can't take aggression
or intimidation lightly.

Because we never know
how it could escalate.

MEXICO CITY

[calming music playing]

[Nicolás] I was riding the subway,
right at Tacubaya station.

[clicks tongue]

When all of a sudden,
I see Rubén walking right in front of me,

going the opposite way.

And I said, "Holy shit, that's Rubén!"

As soon as I got off the subway,
I called him and asked,

"What are you doing here?"
I was complaining to him.

But then he told me everything.

He told me about the threats
and how he was feeling scared.

It's been difficult for me, mentally,
emotionally, and even economically.

Enough with the martyrs and heroes.

You have to be human enough to understand

that there are things
you can't fix overnight.

And we're much more useful
alive than dead.

When Rubén arrived in Mexico City,
he immediately connected with Nadia,

since she had been there
for a few months already.

I mean, he stayed
in a few different places.

He stayed at my house.
He stayed with another friend.

He stayed at Nadia's place.

-I think he stayed there a few times.
-[Nicolás] He did.

APARTMENT FOR RENT
3 ROOMS

[Leopoldo] Nadia started living
in the apartment on Luz Saviñón.

One of the roommates
had just left the apartment,

so they were looking
for someone else to move in.

Nadia contacted them online,
and she moved in.

Without knowing any of them previously.

[Nadia] We will hold
Javier Duarte de Ochoa, state governor,

and his whole cabinet entirely accountable

for what could happen
to those of us involved

in organized movements,

whether they be student,
academic, or civil society as a whole.

We want to emphasize that the state
is completely responsible for our safety.

Because they are the ones
who are ordering our repression.

#JUSTICE FOR THE 5

The message sent was that
Duarte's tentacles could reach everywhere.

[reporter 1] President Enrique Peña Nieto
spoke out

on the multiple homicide case in Narvarte.

Without a doubt, the authorities
and prosecutors are fully committed

to the investigation
and capture of the perpetrators.

[reporter 2] On the same matter,
the government doubled down,

saying that the search would exhaust
all possible lines of investigation.

We must exhaust all options.

Miguel Ángel Mancera
had been the city's attorney general.

However, he gave his position
to his personal secretary.

[reporter] Rodolfo Fernando Ríos Garza,

Federal District
Attorney General's Office.

A man without much experience
in law enforcement,

whose only merit was being a friend
of Miguel Ángel Mancera.

There was enormous pressure put
on the government of Miguel Ángel Mancera

and his attorney's office
to get to the bottom of this crime.

JOURNALIST KILLER

First, we have to wait

for all the facts of this case
to come to light.

This situation is one completely foreign
to the government of Veracruz.

It's even being overseen by a government
belonging to a different political party.

We met Prosecutor Ríos Garza
with numerous journalist organizations

to try to do some damage control.

Let me play some audio from that day.

[Ríos Garza] I can't disclose
too much information,

but the events that took place

had nothing to do
with journalistic activity.

The crime was not directed
at Rubén Espinosa.

We were surprised
by him saying that it wasn't about Rubén

or his work as a journalist.

It felt like they said that
just to eliminate it as an option.

To throw out that line of investigation.

I believe that
the meeting with Rodolfo Ríos

was the starting point
for a whole strategy of investigation,

manipulation,

and establishing a narrative.

THEY CANNOT KILL THE TRUTH

[Ríos Garza] Rubén Espinosa Becerril
was identified by his relatives,

who said that his return
to Mexico City was due to the search

for new opportunities

as professional photographer,

an activity that he developed in Veracruz.

[man] He was a fellow reporter!

Please, quiet down.
Keep calm. I agree that we had…

[man] Rubén Espinosa
didn't leave Veracruz.

He fled Veracruz.

He pointed directly
to Governor Javier Duarte

as the reason for his integrity.

What can you tell us?
I don't believe that.

In regards to this--
All right. All right. Let me speak.

It's very clear that all lines
of investigation are still open.

[man] Our greatest concern…

is that the attorney and this government
keep protecting murderers.

The most likely scenario that we see

is that they will arrest the Toms,
Dicks, and Harrys, as we joked about.

Three complete nobodies.

-Free of wrongdoing.
-Yeah. Without fear of wrongdoing.

The attorney would present them
as the perpetrators

with fabricated stories.

He'll mention drugs.
He'll mention alcohol.

Anything that will rationalize the crime.

[reporter] This video shows
the alleged perpetrators

of the multiple homicide

making their escape
through the Narvarte neighborhood.

[copier whirring]

[reporter 2] The three criminals,
found leaving the apartment

after the murder
of five people, have been identified,

arrested, and detained.

The first man, seen carrying a suitcase,
is Chef Daniel Pacheco Gutiérrez.

Forensics found a fingerprint

and compared it to fingerprints
in the Attorney's Office's database.

And the result was positive.

[reporter 3] Pacheco Gutiérrez,
had previously been imprisoned

for robbery and rape.

[reporter 4] Daniel Pacheco Gutiérrez,
the man who snitched on his accomplices.

[reporter 5] He identified the killers
after being shown pictures of suspects.

[reporter 6] The man in the red Mustang
was a former officer

of Mexico City's police force,
Abraham Torres Tranquilino.

[copier whirring]

Abraham Torres Tranquilino is an ex-cop.

In 2011, he was prosecuted for torture,
alongside several other police officers,

when he submerged
a criminal's head in water.

[reporter 7] One of the victims
knew at least one of the killers

In the center,
we see Colombian Mile Virginia Martín.

And on the far right of this photo,
we see Abraham Torres Tranquilino,

now accused of her murder.

[copier whirring]

[reporter 8] The Capital's
Attorney's Office announced

the arrest of a man identified
as César Omar Martínez,

the third suspect allegedly involved
in the multiple homicide in Narvarte.

[reporter 8] He's the last
to exit the building,

wearing a white T-shirt
and walking across the street.

His name is César Omar Martínez Zendejas.

He is 32 years old
and is a resident of Mexico City.

[reporter 9] It's been reported
that his phone made calls

in the same area,
day, and time as the crime.

Their logic was that three people
show up in the main security camera

on Luz Saviñón.

"Three people claimed
they were in that place."

"That's all the evidence I need."

[reporter 10] The Prosecutor's Office
maintains that only three people

were involved in the multiple homicide.

[Karla] Deputy Prosecutor Garrido said,
"I've identified the perpetrators."

"And what the law requires of me is
to prove who takes the life of a person."

-"Whoever takes the life of a person."
-Mm-hmm.

And then he says,

"Here. Where is the motivation?"
I mean, where do you…?

And we told him,
"If this is the only proof you have,

you can't even figure out
which of the three men shot the gun?"

"No, no, no.
We already have this case solved."

"What else do you want?"
"Well, we want the truth."

And he says, "No."

"What you're asking me for
is a fairy tale."

[Gabriela] According to the investigations
or what the Attorney's Office tells you,

your head starts writing a script
that might not even exist.

There's no logic to it.

We want to know every detail,

but we still don't know
what really happened.

All we're asking for
is that justice gets carried out

and that there will be no impunity.

The best thing they could do for us
at this point would be to tell us,

"We're not gonna do this anymore."

NARVARTE CASE

Now that we have
all the preliminary information,

we've decided to seek out specialists,
forensic experts…

anyone who can analyze
the information we have

and allow us to correct the course
of this investigation.

NARVARTE CASE

In an investigation,
there must be a problem.

The lines of investigation
serve as strategies,

or the solutions, to solving said problem.

Who was there?
Who did it? Why did they do it?

And if you see it reflected
in a legal matter,

then those answers solve the problem.

They're facts.

"…intended to intervene in invasions of…"

"Based on the absence of traces
of forced entry into the property,

it is established
that the perpetrators had access."

There was no forced entry.

It's important to analyze
the Narvarte case

from the perspective of a femicide.

If it is left as a homicide,

then all the violence that was exercised
upon those four women… will fade away.

This implies that key evidence
for the investigation is lost.

"Partial, reddish blood-like stains."

[man] In principle, homicide is the type
of investigation easiest to solve.

That's because homicides
leave behind large amounts of traces,

starting with the corpse.

[Óscar] "Partial,
reddish blood-like stains

are caused by footprints
with no visible pattern or design."

There's no individual description
of the type and size of each shoe.

But that shoe print can still help us
identify and match

with different footprints.

When Daniel got arrested,
we assumed they'd retrieved the shoe

and checked to see if his shoe size
matched the one found at the crime scene.

-And their reaction was, "Uh."
-Yeah. It was like…

[both] "We should write this down."

-Two days later, they got a warrant.
-Of course. Obviously.

But 20 days had already gone by
since his arrest.

Obviously, they didn't find anything.

I don't know why there are
still authorities who don't think

that victims should be allowed access
into their own investigation.

Exactly. It's also one of the principles
of due diligence,

the active involvement of victims
and their families.

Yes.

First of all, they should be allowed
to provide information

they believe to be relevant or pertinent

but also be allowed to access info
gathered in the investigation.

[Óscar] A black-and-white photograph
is ridiculous.

A copy of a copy.

That's what people see.

A copy of the original… with nothing new.

I also believe that this hinders
people's right to justice.

I don't want to say
it's done intentionally,

but it is systematic.

When an investigation begins,

you only have one chance
to get things right.

And if it's not done properly,

it can mark the beginning
of an investigation with deficiencies.

[Samantha] This can plant
the seed of impunity.

Daniel was arrested

because they found a fingerprint
in the closet.

Then the Attorney's Office
leaks his confession to the press.

"The confession
of the Narvarte case killer."

[Ciro] Ciro in the Morning.

The news program with the best

and brightest radio audience
in the country.

[Ríos Garza] Here, I have the statement
of Daniel Pacheco Gutiérrez,

and I'm going to read it as is,
without comments.

"I wish to state that I accept, in part,

the charges made against me

and will detail what occurred as follows."

"On July 31, 2015,

I received a call via my Nextel cell phone
from a friend of mine, José Abraham."

[Ríos Garza] "José Abraham."

"He offered me an invitation, saying…"

[Ríos Garza] "'What's up, Daniel?'
You want to fuck the Colocha?'"

[Tilemy] "He was referring
to a Colombian named Nicole."

In Mile's case, every time
you want to criminalize someone,

you give them a nickname.

"Mile, aka Nicole."

It's the same way they'd refer to her
as "the Colombian woman."

"He also told me
he was going to meet with Omar."

"Outside the building,
Abraham rang the intercom,

and Nicole answered and came to the door."

[buzzer buzzes]

[Tilemy] "Then we entered the building
and took the elevator to apartment 401."

"We followed Nicole into the apartment."

"The door to the middle bedroom was open,

and there was a guy
and a girl laying on the bed."

"Nicole returned with another woman
from the main bedroom."

"The couple in the middle bedroom
came out to the living room as well."

[Ríos Garza] "There were five men
and three women in the room."

"We began to talk."

"Ten minutes later, a larger woman
with light skin came in

and began to clean the kitchen
and do chores."

"I was chatting with the girl Nicole
had brought out of the master bedroom,

and I was asking her if we were going
to 'get down to business,'

referring to whether or not we were going
to engage in sexual intercourse."

"She said yes,
and that it would cost 1,800 pesos."

The statement seems unlikely
as there is no evidence

on the victims' bodies that indicates
they'd had sexual relations that day.

[Ríos Garza] "Meanwhile,
Omar, Abraham, the Colombian,

the bearded guy, and the woman
who was with him were doing cocaine."

[actor sniffles]

How could this statement possibly…
benefit Daniel?

It doesn't.

This statement benefits the authorities.

Why? Because it's helping
tie the loose ends.

"Ah, see? They did cocaine."

USING COCAINE

"Ah, see? It involved prostitution."

"Ah, see? It involved a lot of people."

These are small brushstrokes,

used to construct an entire narrative
with context.

Right. And that's
where the attention diverted to

and where the hypotheses came from.

[Tilemy] "I left the apartment
and pressed the elevator button."

"While waiting for the elevator,
Abraham came out to give me a backpack."

"He said. 'Take it.
My things are in there.'"

"I took them, knowing he needed
some time alone with the Colombian."

"Omar stayed in the apartment
the entire time."

And he says he doesn't know
what happened when he left the apartment.

Till they all left the scene.

[Ríos Garza] "It wasn't
until Sunday, after 2:00 p.m.

that I heard on the news
that several people had been killed,

including a reporter
from Colonia Narvarte."

Daniel is not actually confessing
in this statement.

Why did the Attorney's Office
say there was a confession?

And on top of that,
his statement is incoherent.

[reporter] Thanks to this statement,
the authorities were now aware

that gatherings were common
in that apartment building,

where unknown people could enter
with ease.

[Ríos Garza] The apartment was used
for sex, according to Daniel.

They were practicing prostitution.

"WE WENT FOR SEX"

[Samantha] With these types of headlines,

you strip away the victims'
status as victims.

You deny their access to social justice.

Sometimes, that's all we have.

[Ciro] That was Daniel Pacheco Gutiérrez's
criminal statement.

You heard it right here first, folks.

[Óscar] In the end, the Attorney's Office
achieved their impunity protocol,

building and perpetuating a narrative

that drove attention away
from Veracruz's officials.

A narrative that also stigmatized
the victims

and generated very little social sympathy
towards them.

[Tilemy] You could almost think of it
as a relationship

between the authority
investigating the case

and the media trying to make sense of
the version that criminalizes the victims

and tells the general public
that what happened was a brothel party

got out of control

and everyone involved
was morally reprehensible.

[Samantha] Unfortunately, it's part
of a system composed of different actors

that, together, contribute
from their own separate stages

to arrange and try to put together
different truths.

Or lies.

The University of Toronto's Citizen Lab
documented another attempt of espionage

using Pegasus software.

Karla Micheel Salas Ramírez
and David Peña Rodríguez,

lawyers for the Narvarte cases,
were targeted.

The Pegasus software
had accessed the entire phone,

so it listened to calls.

-It could turn on the camera.
-It was literally controlling our lives.

That software had been acquired

by the then Attorney General's Office
of Mexico.

-And SEDENA.
-And SEDENA.

But it came as a direct order
from the president himself.

[David] Peña Nieto.

PRESIDENT OF MEXICO

Why did we become a target
for the federal government?

But it wasn't the federal government
targeting us.

It was the government
of Miguel Ángel Mancera.

He wanted to do damage control

on a case
that had gotten out of his hands.

Also, around this time,

leaks began to flow out
of the city government at a rapid rate.

[reporter] Traces of drugs
were found at the crime scene.

In Nadia's room, they found an ashtray

containing a substance
identified as marijuana.

They found a small sample of drugs
in the apartment.

That was enough for the media to say
they were involved in drug trafficking.

The theory that the multiple homicide
is drug related has been reaffirmed.

This suggests that the crime
was indeed drug related.

Whatever was talked about on the news

was then used by the authorities
in the investigation.

MEXICO CITY GOVERNOR, 2012-2018

Look, Mexico City has always had
a drug-dealing problem.

And, of course,
this is what criminal groups fight for

and why they kill each other every day.

[reporter] Inside the suitcase
being carried by this man,

there were several kilos of pure cocaine
packaged inside what are known as bricks.

And this was the motive for the homicide
that occurred in the Narvarte apartment.

There's evidence
that they arrived empty-handed

and left with a black suitcase.

This is why they said it was a robbery,
but it wasn't just any robbery.

The type of men involved,

the type of execution,
the type of violence,

those were the elements
that proved this was related to narcotics.

Drugs.

[reporter] The authorities now know
exactly what was in that suitcase.

The murderers carried
several kilos of cocaine

they had stolen from the young Colombian.

[interviewer] However, they didn't find
a strong link to drug trafficking, right?

No. This is why when they discussed
the theft of the suitcase,

they couldn't say
exactly what it contained.

The contents of the suitcase
were never known

because that suitcase was never found.

The Attorney's Office theory was
that there were three murderers

who acted with the motive
of recovering drugs.

They were arrested,
and the case was closed.

That was the evidence.

Those were the items
found at the scene of the crime.

And those were the people
who took part in the event.

That was it.

For example, identifying devices,

extracting information from them,
and seeing what we can find.

These devices were used specifically

so they could have
effective communications in real time

to coordinate their actions.

Once a number
under investigation is located,

the phone carrier
receives an information request.

These sheets have information

regarding the calls
made between the perpetrators.

CLIENT DETAILS

For example, the date of the call,
the time of the call,

the duration of the call,

and the particular geographic location
of the person making the call.

We are going to examine these sheets
and see how the communications

between perpetrators will appear.

From this analysis, we can deduce

that Abraham, Omar, and Daniel

were all likely involved
on the day of the event.

OMAR - OFFICE

But Omar, in particular,
was in constant communication

with a number registered as DP2.

So we learned that there
were not only three people involved.

But at least four.

[Karla] One of the key issues
was accessing security videos.

Being able to see full videos.

Because the only thing we could find
were essentially photograph frames.

With experts looking through photographs,

it's ultimately determined
by them which photos are relevant

and which ones are not.

That's why we say,
"No, we need to see the whole video."

Unfortunately, the chief of police
was the only one with access

to those videos.

We told the attorney
to order the chief of police

to grant us access to those videos.

And basically, all he said was,
"I can't do that."

Everything came
from the Investigative Police.

The person in control
of the entire distorted version of events

was Raúl Peralta.

He was the head
of the Investigative Police.

Some say he was the real boss

who gave orders to Ríos Garza,
the attorney at the time.

We knew the power Peralta had.

A lot of people warned us, you know,

"Whatever you do, don't mess with him."

The first set of videos I had been sent
from Chief Peralta were heavily edited

by the Investigative Police.

They just took several specific frames

and just cut them out
before sending it to me.

It was like a cartoon,

where you could see the trail left
by the SUV and the Mustang.

"This is a grainy video
from a crappy camera,

but you could see the SUV
leaving the scene."

But he just took a clip
from a different camera

where the SUV is moving.

1:40 P.M.

We saw what they wanted us to see
and basically nothing else.

In the same vein of how they assembled
the fragments of different videos,

they started releasing fragments
of the phone call analyses.

When they first released the fragmented
transcripts, we had questions.

When they released the transcript
as a whole, we had even more questions.

What we asked them was,

"Why is it that you only followed the SUV?
Wasn't there another vehicle?"

"No."

"So that means
when they were calling each other,

they were all inside the same car?"

They said, "Yes."

DISC 1
DAMAGED, POOR QUALITY, AND TAKEN AT NIGHT

[Patricia] I made a lot of notes.

Cars passing, patrol cars passing,
visible shadows.

Those notes made me feel
like I had something.

Like I was getting closer.
Closer to the truth.

[David] Up until 2021,

we were only able to see
about 80% of the videos in that folder.

[mouse clicking]

Abraham is definitely one

of the more interesting characters
in this case.

STATEMENT OF PROBABLE CULPRIT(S)

Abraham made this statement
on September 16th,

just after Omar had been arrested.

Abraham's statement reads as follows.

"We went to the Luz Saviñón building

when César Omar Zendejas ordered myself,

Daniel Pacheco,
and a man nicknamed 'El Duy,'"

whom they never asked about again.

Who is "El Duy”? What's his real name?

Where did it come from?

[dog barking in distance]

"Daniel Pacheco,
El Duy, and I drove to the apartment."

"We left in the blue Suburban SUV."

"César Omar Zendejas, aka 'El Omarcito,'

came with another person
I didn't recognize in a Malibu vehicle."

There. An arm comes out
from behind the passenger seat.

He sticks his arm out the window
to smoke a cigarette.

Abraham said that there were three people
in the SUV.

-And two more people were in the Malibu.
-[David] Exactly.

-[Karla] Including Omar.
-[David] Omar and someone else.

This is no coincidence,
and it's incredibly rare

that the Investigative Police
miss an extra person,

given how much tracking and tracing
they do with their footage.

[Luis] The perpetrators' vehicle arrives

from the east side
of the scene of the crime.

They turn down Zempoala.

Once they park, they get out of their car
and walk south.

[Karla] Here, we see three men.

The one with the black jacket is Abraham.

The one on the phone is Daniel.

And, according to the Attorney's Office,

he's talking with Omar,
the one in the middle.

-But he's not on the phone.
-[David] That doesn't make sense.

How could they be talking on the phone?

Omar is clearly not talking to anyone
on the phone.

With this video,
the story told by the Justice Department

starts to unravel.

It makes total sense why they didn't
want us to see these videos.

Total sense.

Abraham revealed
at least three crucial elements

that we have finally been able to confirm,
seven years later.

First, there's another man named "El Duy"
who was involved in some way.

Second, he was receiving instructions
from Omar.

And third, there was a second vehicle
accompanying them.

Abraham made this statement
just after Omar had been arrested.

At the end of his statement, Abraham says,

"Do not transfer César Omar
to this same prison."

"I'm afraid he will try to hurt me."

The authorities have refused
to investigate this specific angle,

which begs the question,
why do they refuse to investigate

what seems to be an orchestrated,
planned, directed operation?

Exactly. This was an operation.

They went to that apartment
to execute the people who were there.

As the investigation continues,

your head starts writing a script
that might not even exist.

"Maybe it was because of Mile
or Nadia or Yesenia or Rubén."

The night before the event,

Rubén arrived at the apartment
late at night with his friend Antonio.

They had gone out
to a bar together downtown.

There, Rubén remembered
that his friend Nadia

was about to leave town,
and he wanted to say goodbye.

So he calls her.

Nadia joins them there,
and when the bar closes,

Nadia suggests they go back to her place.

Apparently, Antonio left the apartment
early the next morning,

and Mile and Yesenia
had slept there overnight.

Mrs. Alejandra Olivia was also there,
cleaning the apartment.

I texted him at 2:00 pm.

"What's up? Where were you yesterday?"

And he said,
"I had drinks with a friend of mine

and went back to her place after."

Of course, I teased him
for not inviting me.

WHY DIDN'T YOU INVITE ME?

[David] Three guys arrive.

Two separate from Abraham
as Abraham is on the phone with Mile.

[Karla] He was probably letting her know
he was coming to the apartment.

I told him,
"Dude, what are you still doing there?"

And he said, "I'm on my way out.
I'll let you know when I'm home."

With that, I thought he was okay.

FRIDAY, 2:13 P.M.

[Indira] A few days earlier,
Yesenia told me her arm hurt.

So, that day, I sent her a message
asking how her arm was.

She said, "It doesn't hurt anymore."

-Then she gave me a call.

those people were arriving

For starters, the first two in are armed,
and they immediately seize control.

As soon as they arrive,
they hold Mile hostage

and threaten everyone else directly.

The presence of weapons.

that only one weapon was fired,

but we don't know if that was
the only one present at the scene

or if others were carrying guns.

[Tilemy] The three-gun idea
seems the most plausible.

But when you piece together
certain elements,

it makes me think
there may have been only one weapon.

Um, could all of you except Omar
put away the guns?

Abraham, put away your gun.

As soon as Mile opens the door,

there should be
an element of surprise bursting in.

Nadia and Rubén will come out immediately
to see what's happening.

Rubén may have tried
to do something about it.

Maybe that's what made them go look
for the potato peeler to subdue him.

In similar situations,

when there are several victims
in an enclosed space,

the execution is almost immediate.

Why? Because that's their purpose.

They came carrying guns,
but they also brought tape.

So their plan was to tie them up
and, obviously, end their lives.

But at that moment, they could have
received instructions to make them suffer.

[in English] When a crime like this
takes place inside a victim's home,

there is always a personal intention.

There's a type of connection,
a subordination,

a relationship between the victim
and the perpetrator.

A lot of trust

that leads the aggressor
to transgress the victim's personal space.

There was fury.
There was violence. There was cruelty.

But I see a need to leave a clear message
of who's in charge here.

[Óscar] The message is clear.

[Karla] In Mile's case, we didn't know
how or when she got there.

Did someone bring her,
or was she there for work?

Her family knew she
had begun work as a model.

There was even a folder

from her supposed employer
at the crime scene.

[Tilemy] The folder contained
her passport,

which drew attention to her nationality.

It also had a document
stating her immigration status.

[Samantha] It's definitely no coincidence

that they left these documents
in plain sight.

Documents that confirm
Mile's stigmatized profession.

-Sure.
-She's a model.

She's Colombian, which in itself
is also highly stigmatized

and criminalized.

There is evidence that two of the victims,

Mile and Yessenia,
were involved in prostitution.

WHATSAPP CHAT HISTORY WITH BRUNO

Okay. Here's what you need to know.

The man's name is Roberto.

He is at the Eurosuites Hotel.

He'll offer you service
if you ask him directly.

They recruit young women
and offer them a work permit in Mexico,

usually through
several fake modeling agencies.

Mile came through a company
called MS Model Management.

[Karla] In one of the many meetings
we had at the Attorney's Office,

we asked them to bring in the employer.

And then they told us
they couldn't find the company.

There's something
very suspicious going on here

because how did immigration
authorize Mile's work permit?

It's interesting because among the papers
found inside the Mustang,

there was a greeting card
from the immigration officers.

INSIDE THE CARD IT SAYS,

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
BEST WISHES. JUNE 13, 2015."

Does that mean someone
from immigration is involved in all this?

All of this points to sex trafficking.

When we talk about sex trafficking,
it always involves a network

because it requires many accomplices.

We could presume this company
is part of a larger network

in which the authorities
were possibly involved

and that it was not just
"a businessman hiring models."

In my opinion,
it just doesn't make any sense,

that with all these pieces of evidence
being placed in plain sight

by the perpetrator or perpetrators,
we still don't know what happened.

Because this has nothing to do
with the folder

or the ID found outside of her purse.

They did not bother
to inform us about anything.

It felt like it was more important

for the authorities
to handwave the whole situation away

as a party gone wrong with drugs,
prostitution, and a robbery.

Bad stuff.

[Óscar] It doesn't make sense.

These boxes seem
to be an odd piece of evidence to place.

Yes, they divert
the investigation elsewhere.

This happens a lot.

We've seen it in previous femicides,
where they look for any piece of evidence,

no matter how small,

to rule out the possibility
of it being a femicide.

For example, they say,

"Oh, there were drugs on the premises,

so let's make them visible
to declare this case a homicide."

"This way, we can get rid of the issue
of having to deal with the femicide."

Well, and this obviously helps them

take their story
in whatever direction they want.

The aggressor placed Mile
in such a way that

whoever entered the apartment,
they would see her body first.

This type of murder is classified
as "very personal,"

which is an inherent attribute
of femicides.

There is not only the murder
but an exercise of power.

The murderer wants to exhibit his victim,

exhibit his crime,
and send a social message of dominance

and hatred towards women.

[Samantha] The bruises found
on Mile's face and head, in particular.

They were made
with such violent forcefulness,

which is also very characteristic
in femicides,

where there was usually a connection
between the aggressor and the victim.

[Héctor] It's been shown through pictures,
phone calls, and text messages

that Abraham had
a close relationship with Mile.

He was in love with Mile.

And although they had become
close friends,

she never agreed
to a romantic relationship with him.

I think my sister let this person
into her life…

and he…

betrayed her trust.

[Samantha] Yes, there's a difference
in how each body was treated.

[Tilemy] This is a clear example.
She shows signs…

[Samantha] In Alejandra's case, we
don't see the same sort of intention

that we see with Mile and Yesenia.

[Héctor] Most of the incident took place

in an area called
the Benito Juárez District.

It's considered one of the safest places
to live in the city.

However, there are other places
of interest in this case,

like the famous Nápoles neighborhood.

It's a major hotspot for mid-level
sex trafficking in Mexico City.

It's an upper-middle-class neighborhood.

There are plenty of apartments
for women to stay at and conduct business,

with customers paying between 2,000
and 4,000 pesos

for an hour of service.

On Illinois Street, there is an address

that one witness claims Mile lived at.

In 2018, several victims
of foreign sex trafficking

were rescued
after a search warrant went out.

[reporter] This afternoon,
17 women were rescued

from sexual exploitation
near the Nápoles neighborhood.

[Héctor] However, the Attorney's Office
has not made a link between these events.

The hotels where this activity took place

are found on Patriotismo,
the Viaduct, and Revolución Avenues.

Traffickers can move victims
around this area easily,

within a matter of minutes.

Because of how close they are,

they can perform more services per day,
maximizing their profits.

[Bruno] Remember
to let me know immediately

as soon as you get there.

Let me know when they've paid you
and that everything is okay.

And when you leave,
as you know, make the deposit.

YESS: HE PAID.

This makes the case seem
much more like a hate crime,

relating it to a hyper-violent crime
like sex trafficking,

rather than hired assassins.

However, there are certain elements
that I can't yet explain myself.

The deposits they made in their final year
were close to one million pesos.

DAN: HE'LL PAY YOU 1,600 PESOS
AND 100 USD.

DAN: GO DEPOSIT RIGHT AWAY, PLEASE.

DAN: CONFIRM PAYMENT

Why would you choose
to lose that kind of money?

[Indira] Our children
don't tell us everything.

In the moment,

these things can be difficult to hear.

My daughter didn't trust me enough

to tell me if she really worked
in that type of business.

If she chose to take that path,

I wouldn't judge her.

I never would.

Only she knows why she made
the choices she made.

But this just leads to the authorities
saying that they deserved it.

This crime.

Being murdered, being tortured.

This is why we can't always accept
what the authorities say.

They're always looking
for the easiest solution.

"This is why it happened."

Even if what they say is true,

she will never stop being my daughter.

The phone calls that took place
before and after the incident

involved several other contacts.

In this case, we can see

that there is a network
of at least ten people involved.

All those numbers are also relevant
as there are shared contacts between them.

For example, "Pillo,"
"Dui," "Jordan," and "River."

STORM

The contact saved
as "Storm" draws my attention

as that's one of the nicknames
given to Arturo Bermúdez Zurita.

BERMÚDEZ, FROM BUREAUCRAT
TO "CAPTAIN STORM"

This is a shared contact
between both Omar and Abraham.

Storm called Abraham three times
a few hours after the incident.

STORM

What we have found
regarding Bermúdez Zurita,

from a journalistic investigation,

is that he owned
private security companies

in Mexico City,
some located only ten minutes

from where the Narvarte femicides
and homicides occurred.

Even though we presented this information
to the Attorney's Office,

they have shown no interest to this day.

[narrator] At GPR, we subject our elements

[interviewer] Did you know
that Arturo Bermúdez Zurita

owned private security companies
under his family's name,

which operated very closely
to the scene of the crime?

I didn't know where they were.

I don't know
where his companies are located.

I do know he has operated
private security companies

here in Mexico for many years.

[interviewer] Do you think
Arturo Bermúdez Zurita

could be capable of these acts?

No, no. I don't know.

I really don't know if Arturo
could be involved in that incident.

That's my clearest answer.

Because it's irrelevant
if I believe he could or not.

It's a matter
of whether I know or I don't know.

The truth is, I don't know.

[Leopoldo] Another element
that we had pointed out

was the persistent calls
that were conducted

around the time of the incident.

And the answer we got back
from the Chief of Investigative Police,

Raúl Peralta, was
that they were likely calls from the bank.

And he said this,
dripping with sarcasm and cynicism.

[Luis] Eleven calls were made
from inside the apartment.

Considering that the event lasted
nearly 55 minutes,

if you add up the time from every call,

you have almost ten total minutes,

which means there was
a lot of communication going on

between the people inside the apartment
and another contact saved as "office."

[clock ticking]

The fact that Daniel
had saved this contact as "office"

suggests that this was someone
at a higher level in the chain of command.

It's also interesting
how the Attorney's Office,

when asking for information
about that number,

got several details wrong.

First, they wrote down
the first few digits incorrectly

when making their request
to the now-defunct Nextel.

But they actually made their request
to Telcel.

We don't know why, if they knew
the number was registered with Nextel.

This time, they changed the digits again.

So they failed three times to properly
record the number,

which is crucial to understanding
how everything played out.

We lost our chance to know
who was behind that number

and what other connections they had

which could match up
with the rest of our list.

[David] Not having made that request
correctly suggests dishonesty.

They were trying to remove information
that could bring us closer to the truth.

What were the others doing when
one of them was talking on the phone?

You could speculate anything.
I mean, absolutely anything.

They were either giving information
or receiving instructions.

Was it possible that one of the victims

was put on the phone to speak
with the perpetrators' contact?

Totally.

The message was so important
that they didn't interrupt their call.

There are calls that last over 100 seconds

and others that are only six
to seven seconds long.

They subdue them and get a call
with instructions, "Hurt them."

[Óscar] This is Rubén's autopsy.

He was apparently beaten
on the right cheek.

Two wounds were caused
by a sharp instrument,

injuring soft tissue on his body.

[Tilemy] "Unknown female corpse A."

"The corpse features tattoos
with the words,

'Let's be real. Let's do the impossible.'"

"Another one reads, 'Rebellion is life.'"

The corpse presents six
oval-shaped cut wounds with sharp edges.

[Óscar] They're similar to the wounds
found on Rubén's neck.

-From the potato peeler.
-Yes.

These wounds were made with the intention
to harass and intimidate,

as well as causing…

-Suffering.
-Suffering, right.

The injuries ranged
from major to minor cuts,

covering both the front
and sides of her neck.

They practically slit her throat.

Assuming the motive had to do
with Yesenia and Mile,

why did they torture Rubén?

Why torture Nadia?

They said, "No, no, no, no, no.
Why are you saying they were tortured?"

"Rubén's injuries were made
with a potato peeler."

"And these are all
non-life-threatening injuries."

And we told them, "Exactly!"

"We're saying it was torture
because they wanted to hurt him,

not kill him."

[David] As more and more was revealed
from the autopsies,

we began to have a greater understanding
of how the incident played out.

It became clear that these injuries

were precisely the kind
used to make hostages talk.

[Karla] Something that reinforces
this hypothesis

is the way
the victims' bodies were placed.

[Mirtha] I write verses around your neck

So that the pressure of the rope
Is not exerted

The wind that ruffles through your hair

It carries your thoughts everywhere

And deposits each memory
In every place it touches

They're hiding something.

They're protecting someone.

They never thought that because of Rubén…

It's hard to say this

because my daughter was killed, but…

I thank Rubén, Rubén Espinosa,

for being there that day.

Because if he hadn't been there,
it would've been forgotten.

Just some other girls killed.

And thanks to him being there,

the case goes on and…

and we continue.

We continue this fight
and continue to realize

that the authorities
are doing their jobs wrong.

Not just for my mom,
but for the others who were there too.

I just need to know why they did it.

What their motive was.

Because they won't talk.

They won't say who sent them
or who gave them their orders.

They just went in and did their job.

That's all we know.

From the beginning, we've been saying
that there's a lot more to this story.

It's been about seven years
since the multiple homicide

that claimed the lives of five people
in an apartment in Narvarte.

Today, the case's lawyers…

[reporter] The participation of at least
five visible people in the incident,

not just the three
that have already been arrested.

They claim that there were more people
involved in the incident.

We have been lied to,

victimized, and stigmatized
over and over again.

How much of this is ineptitude,
and how much of this is a cover-up?

How did they forget to check key details?

Did they forget to care about this case?

Did they think we weren't going to notice?

Did they think
we were just going to move on?

Do they think we're afraid of them?
Because we're not.

against Javier Duarte,
governor of Veracruz.

These charges also include
the creation of 33 ghost companies,

used for the acquisition of real estate.

another crime was committed,
a state crime.

The meddling of information.

The destruction
and concealment of evidence.

Lying to the victims' families.

As well as lying to the general public.

They're always making promises,

saying that they'll do more research.

But they never do anything,
and we never find out what happened

or who was involved.

There's no obvious motive.

And as time goes on,
there's more and more social demand

to find out who, when, where, and how,

but, above all, why.

[Mirtha] Why does it seem
that this Attorney's Office

and the previous one are in collusion?

In favor of protecting the accused
and those who remain to be accused?

Why does their judicial conduct

resist clarifying
the innumerable contradictions

that have been bubbling up over time?

The lack of information
is itself a kind of torture.

It's as if a bullet pierced my heart
for the second time

since a bullet pierced my daughter's head,

ending her life of brilliance and bravery.

That bullet did not stay there
in those walls

but pierced through my heart
and the hearts of all of us who loved her.

the so-called authorities

don't understand.

If you just sit there and tell me
it was all because of human trafficking,

guess what?
