So, you literally just bought
the house.

-[Zach] Uh, he's
in total shock. [laughs]

I've probably just bankrupted
my family.

[Zach] He's more
than an assistant to me.

He's one of my best friends
in the world.

What this renovation
is gonna do

for his wife and his kids,

it's gonna impact
all of their lives.

I've always thought...

How long is it gonna be,

living in LA before I
get chauffeured around
by a big celebrity?

-[chuckles]
-It's happening!

[Drew] I've been a huge fan
of yours for a long time.

-Scrubs... was so my...
sense of humor.

[Zach] I always wanted
to be an actor.

I came out to LA,
and I just could not
get anything.

I... I just got
so disillusioned

by the whole thing,
and wasn't sure

that it... that it was for me.

And I spoke to my agent,
and she said,
"Don't give up yet.

Just go through
one more pilot season."

And my very first audition,
after that pep talk,

was for Scrubs.

And because I wanted to be
a filmmaker as well,

and I had had
the ideas for this movie
floating around.

And so, that's when I sat down
and actually,
for the first time,

really put my...
my first film, Garden State,
together on, um, on the page.

-And what a first film, too.
-What a film. Yeah.

-[Drew] Tell us
your background

when it comes to renovations.

[Zach] I love renovation.

I did a major
house renovation,

-um, on my house here
in LA. It took two years...
-Yeah.

...and I learned
so much from...
from doing that. But...

even as stressful as it was,
I really...

I really enjoyed it.
I got so excited.
I loved going

at the end
of every single day.

[Drew] Oh, you're
that annoying homeowner?

-[laughter]
-Yeah.

-"He's here again."
-No, but I'm being
a cheerleader.

I'm like, "Oh, my God!
They put the studs in."

[Jonathan] You have
your own cheerleader
as well,

which is why we're even here.

Yeah.

Mark sounds like
the most amazing... sidekick.

[Zach] He's more than
an assistant to me. He's one

of my best friends
in the world.

There's times when I'm...
I've been depressed

and down,
whether it's breakups or...

or things in my career

that didn't go
how I wanted them to go,
or deaths.

Uh... I've... I've lost
some very important people
to me in my life.

And Mark has been
just right by side,
as one of my best friends,

and he's the sweetest person.

So, that's why this is
so special,

that the... the idea
that I could give back
to him...

-[Drew] Mmm.
-...in an area where...
where he really needs help.

And this is a guy,
he has so much
on his own plate.

He's got an amazing wife,
two beautiful children.

-Is... Is Mark gonna be
at the house?
-Mark's gonna be at the house.

Here's the thing.
He bought this house
six weeks ago.

He told me he was
gonna be here
checking something out.

I told him
I was gonna stop by,

just because I've
never seen it.
So, he has no idea,

obviously, that I'm coming
with you guys
and a camera crew.

This was a reach
for him buying
this house, financially.

But he did it,
and he was so proud
of himself,

and he was so excited.

-Once the high of getting
the thing is over...
-Yeah.

...then you get into, like,

"Oh... no. Look how much
I have to do."

I think he really has been
having some regrets,

like, "Did I buy
a... a lemon?"

That is Mark's house
right there.

-[Jonathan] Okay.

that he was really stressed.

It was a bit of a tricky thing

to figure out how to...

Yes, we went through
the whole process,

and, uh, it was our first
home-buying experience.

What's crazy is, now that I'm
in these first weeks of it,

it's... you're just
being brought
to your attention

how much work
and things need to be done.

I told them that you've
been walking around

-with your... your hands
on your head a lot.
-Yeah, I, kind of,

just sit in the open room
with that binder

that's my, uh,
inspection report,
uh, 158 pages.

And I just look
through it, and I think
about all the things

that I need to do, and, um,

how I probably just bankrupted

-my family.
-We're here
to rescue you, brother.

What this renovation
is gonna do for his wife
and his kids,

and... and how it's going
to impact all of their lives,
I... I just feel

so lucky and grateful
that I can do this.

I see the girls,
in particular, a lot,

because Mark will always
bring them by the house.
I... I have a dog.

Uh, the girls go swimming
in my pool,

and I... I do live
a little vicariously
through Mark,

and... and learn a lot
from what a good father he is.

You've been really supportive
of this buying process,

but this is... this is
really next level.

When you start this job,
you don't exactly know
how it's gonna develop,

and it's just
sort of developed as,
like, the extension of...

-of family. Oh, and--
-He's my emergency contact.

-Yeah. [laughs sheepishly]
-I'm not married, so...
he's my emergency contact.

So, when you find somebody
that you, kind of,
get along with that well,

uh, you just develop
a personal relationship
where you...

you know one another.
And he knows my family,

and I know his family.

And we celebrate highs
together and support
each other through lows.

And now, this,
I just... I don't...
[titters] This is...

-You're handling the shock
very well. I'm very impressed.
-This is the new... This is

the new benchmark
of something crazy.

So, why don't we get inside
and have a look at the place?

we're working with today.

You got, all of a sudden,
even more stressed.

this is the place. Nice.

So, I see what
you're talking about,

with the idea that you thought
you were getting something
a little nicer,

and then
once you started digging in.

Because these are
cheap materials.

-[Mark] Right.
-They've just painted
everything white.

-This home will be what?
From the '30s?
-'30s. Yeah.

So, the original house
was a lot smaller.

This was the living room.

And actually,
there was probably a fireplace
at some point.

-[Mark] I know.
-Yeah.

No, I feel like,
slowly over the years,

that, that... this house has,
kind of, had the soul
kind of taken out of it.

In the first week
after we closed,

one of the toilets exploded.

We knew electrical
needed work,

we knew the roof needed work.

Hot water heater,
the windows were leaking,

and all these
different things.

-What is with
the weird layout?
-Yeah!

[Zach] This all looks
like Ms. Pac-Man.

-[Drew] Yeah.
-[Jonathan] Yeah, exactly.

-[laughter]
-[mimicking beeping in game]
I... I don't get it.

-Where...
-[Jonathan] Yeah, this is
a terrible thing.

[Drew] The footprint here
is pretty big,

but you have
so little cabinetry.

It's one shelf, un-adjustable.

-Yeah.
-Uh... So, my wife
and I have been, like,

contemplating, like,
"Where do we put food?

Where will glasses go?"

-I don't know.
-Yeah, I wonder what
the previous owner, like...

Where do they put food?

[Jonathan] Is this
the main problem area?

You've got this great space
down here, too,

but the tile's...
kinda... dated.

[Mark] It kind of feels like
a converted garage.

Did you tour this
with your wife?

So, we toured it together
the day we were leaving
for Christmas,

to go home
to see our families.
And so, it was very fast.

And it was emotional.

And price point was decent,

and I just kept trying
to justify this, like,

"That'll be fine."
Then the day comes,

and you get the keys
and you come in,

and I'm like,
"I don't know how fine
anything is."

The one thing I did like
about this house was,

it was unique in that
the kitchen was, sort of,
in the middle.

And it was, kind of,
the center space
that you went through.

So, just any place
where we can be,

maybe the kids can sit
and do their homework,

you can serve a meal.

Like, in our condo,
the smallest room
was the kitchen.

My wife loves to cook.
She loves to bake. We...

But we like to be
a family when we can,

and we've had no room
or opportunity to do that.

It's one thing to feel,

uh, the accomplishment
of buying your own house

for the the first time.

Are you okay taking off
and letting us talk
about the property a bit?

I really got to go?

And now, all of a sudden,
it's, like,

"Oh, my God,
this could be something...

really special
that we just love."

It's a surprise.
You got to get the hell

knowing how much
he loves to cook
and his wife loves to cook,

-[Zach] I think the kitchen

is the main thing,
just a really beautiful,
functional kitchen.

This is so awkward.

So, some layout, obviously,

without this weird
Ms. Pac-Man, uh, grid.

You could probably do

-a furniture-piece island.
-[Drew] Yeah.

[Jonathan] So, you have
the prep space somewhere
for the kids to sit.

But you won't get
a full island,

because it's gonna be
too narrow.

Another thing he brought up,
uh, that he didn't mention,

was that the washer-dryer
are in the garage.

-[Drew] Oh, I see that.
-And he's gotta do a lot
of laundry with the kids.

So, I'd love to find a place,
I don't know where,

where we could, um, uh,
put the washer dryer
somewhere in the house.

-We'll have to explore
the footprint a little bit.
-Yeah.

So, there's a bedroom
over here.

-And then I saw this
from all the way to over here.
- [Drew] To over here. Yeah.

This is a Spanish-style home.

But over the years,
they've just eliminated
all the character.

And this, to me, is like
they're trying to fake it
for character.

Now, and this is something
I don't know.

Is this
a Spanish-style house detail,
this arch?

No. It would be more
of a rounded arch.

[Zach] And the flooring,
I got to tell you,
the mismatch,

that's something I really
would like to try and change.

[Drew] This is just
a blank slate,

like, this is so boring
down here.

-Why are there
so many receptacles?
-Yeah, it... So, this is...

-I... Yeah.
-Look at how many outlets
are in this room.

-[Jonathan]
I have concerns about this.

This was not done

In the pilot episode
with Brad Pitt, which I loved,

So, if there's

we could find a place to work,

So, they've already
given notice at their rental,

and his kids have
five more weeks in school.

So, uh, the ideal timeline,
if do-able,

and I know no one
could do this in real life
other than you guys,

but five weeks would be
the ideal time for him
to move back in.

Five weeks is tight,

especially for
a total reconfig
of the kitchen, but...

-That's good.

-it's feasible.
-I'm gonna be helping, guys.

-Eight weeks.

I really just thought
I was gonna buy them
an appliance or something.

to do a lot of demo.

and with demo done,

we're not wasting
any time roughing in
the new plumbing

and replacing
all that old illegal
electrical work.

We're not just adding style
and functionality
to the kitchen,

we're giving Mark
and his family peace of mind

that everything
has been done right.

While work
steams ahead inside,

I need Zach to sign off
on some gorgeous new finishes
Mark will love.

'Cause I feel like,

the demolition,

but I love looking

a really cozy vibe.

We could actually do

a nice big room.

we can step it up

into a beautiful
two-tone kitchen.

Yeah, you want something

Although, I do love

or something in the spirit
of this, is really pretty.

[Zach] Design is a lot
like filming.

I think that's why I'm
so drawn to it in my own life.

On the giant scale,
that's picking locations

and hiring
the lead actors, and...

And then on the micro scale,
it's, uh,

you know, choosing
the fabric that's gonna be
in the curtains.

-Do you like that?
-Yeah, I do.

[Jonathan] With these gorgeous
new finishes

and a more functional
kitchen layout,

we'll lean into the home's
original character

with Spanish-style archways.

We'll add light, durable,
engineered oak
hardwood throughout

that will withstand everything
a busy family
of four throws at it.

Mark desperately needed
kitchen storage,

so we're including
rich oak lower cabinets

and two large pantries
that play off
the soft white uppers

and give the space character.

Paired with
panel-ready appliances,

the Calacatta-inspired
porcelain countertops
and backsplash

will not only wow for guests,

they're easier to maintain
for a family with young kids.

There isn't room
for a traditional island,

but we do have space
for a narrow custom piece

that Mark's girls can sit out
for homework,
or as a breakfast bar.

While family meals
can be shared at the family
dining-room table

that boasts a trendy
space-saving banquet.

This, coupled
with cozy furniture
and plenty of space,

will make the perfect place
for Mark, his wife,

and their two girls to enjoy
some quality family time.

The hidden bookshelf door
Zach requested will tuck away

a new stack
of a washer-dryer combo

that no one will ever know
was there.

You just designed
an incredible kitchen--

-I'm so proud of us.

to finish our work

unless we go in
and retroactively fix

all the other issues

of this building.

their final inspection,

strict earth quake
and wind shear regulations.

Inspectors also discovered

that the foundation
of the addition

was not done correctly,
so we're required to underpin
everything properly.

is adding four weeks

to our original
five week schedule.

This delay
is out of our control,

but now it's on us to do
everything humanly possible

to stay on schedule
and get this family
in their home.

[Jonathan] Meanwhile,
we're forging ahead

with the new framing
in the kitchen,

but we can't
close up the walls

until the city inspects
all the new work.

We've already
rewired this entire kitchen,

we're running new plumbing,
new gas...

I mean, everything we're doing
is totally to code.

while playing in the backyard.

There's always a balance
when you're doing a house,

I know in my own experience,

to be too monotonous.

the brothers to know,
