on what's known as the Inca Trail.

Stretching across six countries,

the ancient pathway linked

the vast empire
of the Incan civilisation

who ruled South America.

Those who walk the Inca Trail
must battle extreme heat.

And the air is thinner up here,
making oxygen harder to come by.

It was a trade route
for about 10,000 years

and now our teams
are about to tread the well-worn path

for the third leg
of The Amazing Race Australia.

Our nine remaining celebrity teams
have travelled north

to the township of Purmamarca,

and are departing
in the order they arrived

at the previous pit stop.

Local clay is mixed with straw
and dried in the sun

to create a thick brick

that insulates against

of this high-altitude desert region.

In this challenge,

our racers will get their hands dirty
and mould 18 bricks.

Once the foreman is happy
with the shape and consistency,

they'll receive their next clue.

between two challenges,

each with its own pros and cons.

In this detour, teams will decide
between Dress Like An Incan

and Walk Like An Incan.

Travellers on the Inca Way
carried a lot on their backs

using this, an aguayo,
a traditional Incan blanket,

and they would have passed
through here -

the seven sands of Purmamarca.

It's a tough slog.
The altitude is real, but the rocks,

they've really got to be seen
to be believed.

First, teams will trek
to the mountaintop

close to 3,000 metres up.

Then they must fill
the carrying cloths

with all the goods

and carry them securely
on their backs down the mountain.

The shopkeeper will check the load,
and if correct,

they'll receive their next clue.

Meet my mate, the Ekeko.

Now, in the local Andean culture,

the Ekeko was a symbol
of prosperity and abundance.

Local tradition promises

if you tie a miniature version
of what you wish for to the doll,

your wish will come true.

Teams who choose Dress Like An Incan
must find the town square market

and the demonstration Ekeko doll.

Then they must tie each wish item
onto their doll

using only the strings provided.

This challenge tests observation,
dexterity and patience.

Only when every item is tied securely
to the doll

will teams receive their next clue.
