And I think
the schooling Max had with Jos

is the basis of everything.

in a Formula One car,

So, I stopped in 2003.

I could have done another year
but I said, "I can't do it anymore."

I had a good time.

But knowing if you go to the race,

you finish
somewhere between 10 and 20.

That was not good enough for me,
so I decided that was it.

My dad had been on the podium,
so, yeah, he had special moments.

But now he doesn't really care
about what went wrong in his career.

I think he just said to himself,
learn from it and just move on.

For me, I just saw him as my dad
who was doing what I wanted to do.

And every weekend we were driving

around 1200 kilometres one way.

Max was sleeping in a van,
he had his bed behind the seats.

And then on Saturday morning,
8 o'clock,

went to the circuit,
testing the whole day.

And Sunday the same,

and then around 4 o'clock
I was driving back.

And then I dropped him off school
on Monday morning.

I always kept it fun, or maybe he
will stop with it or whatever.

So, he really enjoyed that time.

As a father, he was driving,
he was financing, he was mentoring,

he was everything to make it happen.

Max Verstappen has made his way
back to the front!

I was very proud of him.

It was fun. It was professional.

And we were doing it for a reason.

You were always in front,
always first.

how can you do this?

Actually, you cannot explain it,

because every start is different.

I think at the time I was too young

I know, some, like my dad,

it didn't matter if it was warm,
cold, dry, wet,

he was out there like, "Every lap
you make a mistake in that corner.

You're doing it wrong!"
These kind of things.

Always constantly
trying to improve me, you know?

Sometimes you take it
a bit easier than others.

You have to keep in mind
how straining it is.

But physically they have to be
able to manage.

And sometimes it got a bit heated.

One time, my dad was very upset.

It was a World Championship.

That was the first opportunity
for me to win

the World Championship.

He was just so fed up with it.

I was to him,

I never abused him.
I was teaching him.

I was hard on him,

and that was also my plan on that,

A lot of people have no idea
what you have to do to arrive

to the top of a sport.

And sometimes I said, "Jos,
you're from a different planet."

He said, "I know,

but, we have to do it like this
to be successful.

I can remember he had
a go kart race in Italy

and Jos was not present.

Without my dad, it was very weird
because he was always there.

You could sit and cry,

but I mean it won't solve anything
or bring you anywhere.

But you have to just move on.
