Garrincha: Joy of the People
was restored using a duplicate negative

made from a badly deteriorated print.

The original sound and image negatives,

severely affected by “vinegar syndrome,”
were discarded.

All source materials located
contained black frames

which were retained to compensate
for gaps in the footage.

The original defects of image capture
or duplication errors

and the marks of deterioration
in the archive images used in the film

were preserved as characteristics
of the original production.

The sound restoration
was based on two prints:

one made from a combined interpositive,

another made from the original negatives
shortly before they were discarded.

The original film sync was maintained.

The 2K digital restoration was completed
in São Paulo in June of 2006.

In the so-called land of Santa Cruz

“Garrincha” is the name
of a cheerful, earth-colored bird.

This film intends to show,
among other things,

that whoever gave Manoel Francisco
dos Santos the nickname Garrincha,

knew well both the man and the bird,
and was a poet as well.

I first felt famous in 1958
when I arrived here

then went back to my hometown, Pau Grande,

and I understood I was famous
when my friends told me so.

My house was always crowded.

I used to do shopping
and always went by train.

I would be tired
from the training sessions

and the people there
would bother me a bit.

I got tired of being an idol.

But you can't do anything about it.

We have to put up with all that

because people like you, and that's good.

But it's really tiresome.

To measure Garrincha's popularity,

we hid a camera in the city center
and followed his steps from a window.

At first, nobody recognized him.

He crossed the avenue toward the bank
where he goes on business once a week.

When Garrincha left the bank,
he was somehow recognized,

and suddenly he was surrounded by people.

When on tour with Botafogo
or the Brazilian national team,

Garrincha usually earns presents
from his teammates

for being first to get off the bus
at stadiums and hotels.

Going first, he sweeps away the crowd
and clears the way for his teammates.

Downtown,
besides his usual visit to the bank,

Garrincha always visits the record shops.

It's common to hear
a new samba or carnival march

celebrating his feats as a champion,

feats that he continues to honor
in his modest surroundings

and which haven't managed
to change the simplicity of his life.

To this day, Garrincha's family lives
in the place he was born 29 years ago.

Pau Grande is a town of 3,000 people
at the foot of the Petrópolis mountains,

40 miles from Rio de Janeiro.

Life in the village
revolves around a textile mill.

All the houses belong to the mill,
even Garrincha's,

which he was given in reward
for the World Cup victory of 1958.

Garrincha's family
is composed of his wife,

seven daughters, and a few birds.

One of the birds is very strange.

Instead of singing,
it speaks with a human voice.

Leave it!

It's a mynah.

Vasco!

Leave it!

Sara, Maria Angélica,

Maria das Graças, Maria Teresa,
and Denise.

Garrincha's seven daughters.

Seven dribbles of destiny,

which has sent him only girls
when he wished for a boy,

a little Garrincha with crooked legs

that he hopes to earn next time.

Garrincha's house in Pau Grande becomes
a tourist attraction during the World Cup.

It's also the center of political activity
during electoral campaigns

when candidates come trying
to benefit from the player's fame.

But it's in the pickup soccer games
in Pau Grande

that his real friends can be found.

The right forward and captain,

Garrincha spends his days off
with his friends, playing barefooted.

The field, called Little Maracanã,
is the same as in his childhood.

It lies at the top of a steep hill

and there soccer has
its own forms and rules.

Kicking the ball down the hill

is a more serious error
than scoring an own goal.

Together with Paintbrush and Swing,
his two best friends,

they form the best line of forwards
in the foothills.

They play like children,
happy and carefree.

The ball is their toy.

Their reward is a cup of beer the losers
must buy the winners at the town bar.

Paintbrush, Swing, and Altair
are more than friends.

They're like secretaries,
always by his side.

Sober and discreet,

they never take advantage
of Garrincha's fame and prestige.

They grew up together
in a poor neighborhood,

they went to the same school,

and started out together
as textile workers

at the mill that dominates town life.

Now as before,
his friends still work at the mill.

They work eight hours a day
and receive minimum wage.

As a soccer player, Garrincha earns
nearly 500,000 cruzeiros per month.

At the mill, he used to be a bad worker.

At times he even fell asleep amidst
the terrible din of the machines.

He was nearly fired many times,

but his final day was always
postponed until next Monday,

so he could play one more Sunday
on the company team.

But on each Monday,
his firing could never take effect

because every Sunday,
he'd scored the winning goals.

He rose and rose in his friends' esteem,
until he rivaled President Vargas

at the headquarters
of Esporte Clube Pau Grande.

Garrincha left Pau Grande
to train with the Botafogo team.

He knew nothing about big city soccer.

His unexpected playing style
impressed everyone.

The next day, the press noted
the presence at the training session

of a newcomer with crooked legs
and stunning dribbles.

“It was by reading the papers
that I found out my legs were crooked.”

Today, after ten years,

this veteran is still impatient
with the routine of training.

His guerrilla fighter temperament
could never get used to it.

His tendency to gain weight
makes him the target of the coaches.

Training Monday through Saturday,

each soccer player must follow
a strict diet on the weekend.

Both married and unmarried players

spend three days together
in a house owned by the club.

Twenty-four hours a day,

they follow the coach's rules
and the doctor's instructions.

Dr. Monteiro, Professor of Traumatology,

has a scientific interest
in Garrincha's case.

Here is his explanation.

If Garrincha were an unknown player

showing up at a soccer club nowadays,

he might surprise
any doctor who examined him.

He would be deemed incapable
of playing soccer.

What's peculiar about the lower limbs
of the great Garrincha,

is the presence of an axial deviation
in the lower part of the leg.

The back side also has this,
but to the opposite side,

thus forming together
the so-called crooked knees:

a bilateral deviation
of the two lower limbs.

As can be seen
in this X-ray of his right leg,

there is a modification
in the vertical axis of this leg.

Garrincha doesn't stop with the doctors,
he also has a healer in Pau Grande.

At times, she does away
with the devices put on his legs

in order to heal him
with holy water and herbs.

Mrs. Delfina is a washerwoman
and claims she's 100 years old.

CITY SUFFERS FOR 90 MINUTES
IN DRAMA OF NATIONAL TEAM

Superstitious remedies
are not unique to Garrincha.

All Brazilian soccer players subject
themselves to the strangest rituals

to protect themselves from defeat.

PRESIDENT WILL LISTEN TO GAME
AT OFFICIAL RESIDENCE

On the wings of superstition,

Brazilian soccer was carried
to the Chile World Cup in May of 1962.

The team manager wore the same suit
he had worn to the World Cup in 1958.

In the game against Mexico
in Viña del Mar Stadium,

all the players refused to wear
the elegant woolen shirts

that were donated to Brazil
by an Italian company.

They preferred wearing
the same worn-out shirts

used in the last victorious
international games.

Brazil, as world champion,
was considered the favorite.

Confidence in their victory was based
on the legs of Pelé and Garrincha.

But Garrincha's legs trembled visibly
before the kick-off,

but more from a sense
of responsibility than fear.

In 1958, Brazilian soccer,
frustrated by repeated defeats,

had been redeemed by Pelé and Garrincha.

Now it was another World Cup
hanging on Pelé's and Garrincha's luck.

Garrincha went through the game without
showing the slightest sign of his talent.

The headlines of the 2-0 win
against Mexico mentioned only Pelé.

Three days after the victory
against Mexico,

Pelé and Garrincha once again
shared responsibility for a game.

The opponent was Czechoslovakia.

But on that day,
destiny overtook Brazilian hopes

and dramatically
pulled Pelé from the game,

who would remain sidelined during the Cup,

victim of one of the most dreaded
injuries in soccer:

a sprained groin muscle.

The game against Spain
was Brazil's greatest obstacle in Chile.

Spain scored an early goal,
and Pelé was out.

Our only hope was that Garrincha would
show his genius during the second half.

He didn't fail.

Suddenly,
that overweight, uninspired player

began to invent dribbles
against the Spanish defense.

The Brazilian field was defended
by two distinct styles of team play:

that of the strategist, Didi
and the guerrilla fighter, Garrincha.

The victory that his dribbles
brought about was dramatic.

Some Brazilian fans collapsed
with emotion right in the stadium.

One of them broke both legs in a fall.

The amateur filmmaker who took these shots

lost control of both the light
and his nerves.

In the World Cup of 1958,
sitting on the bench,

Garrincha grumbled about
not playing against England.

“If I catch one of these limeys,
I'll score, ” he said.

In Chile in '62, his dream of scoring
against the English would come true.

With his incredible dribbles
coming from everywhere,

he single-handedly dismantled
the structure of the English team,

scoring goals that until then were
the exclusive domain of Pelé or Didi.

He was almost possessed.

After a penalty,
Didi was taking possession,

but Garrincha came from behind,
pushed Didi aside,

and took the shot himself
that Vava turned into a goal.

Later, taking a free kick,
he scored the third goal.

BRAZIL BUZZES
CHILE TREMBLES

Garrincha, omnipresent
in the game against England,

was equally unstoppable
three days later against Chile.

His left foot was never good at kicking.

Nonetheless, he made a goal
worthy of the best lefties.

Even stumbling, enduring penalties,

Garrincha dazzled
the national stadium of Santiago,

causing such a commotion
on and off the field

that it transformed the game
into an epic battle,

even racking the nerves
of the Peruvian referee.

Ignoring Coach Aymoré's
shouted orders to stay in position,

Garrincha, always the rebel,
could not be contained in one place.

At one point,
he scored with his head from the left

which suddenly recalled the image
to the great, absent Pelé,

who Garrincha had made us forget
with his talent.

In this semifinal match
of the 1962 World Cup,

Garrincha experienced
a new emotion in his career.

After decisively contributing
to the elimination of Chile,

he also lost his temper.

As he confessed later,

he gave a Chilean player
a kick in the rear.

He was expelled from the field
for the first time in his life.

Afterwards in the locker room,
Nílton Santos said,

had Garrincha had more experience,

he would have run off the field
in a zigzag.

His naivety cost him.
A stone was thrown at his head.

To prevent Garrincha's suspension,

President Prado of Peru intervened

and asked the referee
not to charge him at the FIFA tribunal.

Garrincha played in the World Cup finals
against the Czech team,

repeating in Santiago
the 1958 victory against Sweden,

which can be seen in this footage
that is indeed deteriorated

but no less precious
to the history of football.

In this game, Brazil, with its record
of losing decisive matches,

faced again the specter of the final.

For the international commentators
gathered at the Stockholm stadium,

there was no consensus favorite,

but all said if Sweden scored first,
they would win the game

because the Brazilians
would lose their composure for sure.

And the Swedish team indeed scored first

pulling off a series
of seven perfect passes

which began in the hands of their goalie
and ended in Gilmar's net

without a single Brazilian player
touching the ball.

After the Swedish goal,
the stadium watched in delirium

as Didi took the ball at the net
and calmly crossed the field.

“There was only one thought in my mind,”
Didi would say later.

“To start over
and pass the ball to Garrincha.

I knew that our salvation
was in his feet.”

But the sentiment wasn't shared by Axbom,

Sweden's left back
playing opposite Garrincha,

who the day before the finals
had told the press

he was fully prepared to block the path
of the Brazilian right forward.

Going even further, he said Garrincha
always dribbled to the same side,

and he knew how to counter it.

He was certain he would not
leave the field defeated.

But Axbom was unaware

that he was repeating exactly
what dozens before him had said.

In the end, Didi was right.

Garrincha paid no heed
to the left back Axbom

and treated him as just another player.

Dribbling always to the right,
he made two passes to Vava

in two identical moves.

Thanks to Garrincha's talent and ability,

Brazilian soccer was overcoming
its old complex of losing in the finals.

They now played freely
on the opponent's turf

supported by a crowd that,

instead of being cool and collected,
as might be expected,

was wild and passionate
in the best South American style.

With the scoreboard
against them at the start,

the Brazilian team responded
by becoming implacable

despite Sweden's best efforts

to block Garrincha's movements and passes.

But then the formidable Pelé appeared.

The Swedish team
was focused on the right side

while Pelé was in the middle,
controlling the ball, dribbling at a run,

getting closer and closer
to the Swedish goal.

This young man of 17,
who had just joined the Brazilian team,

play after play was becoming,
together with Garrincha,

one of the biggest stars of the Cup.

In the final match against Sweden,
they both would play a decisive role.

Garrincha breaking down
the Swedish defense,

and Pelé breaking through,
committed to the hard path to a goal.

The goals of the triumphant match
were achieved in every style

with courage, cunning and authority.

Well before the end of the game,
the Brazilians were certain of victory,

and their playing became colorful.

The game would end with a moment
of great beauty, Pelé's last goal.

But at the Cup final in 1962
in Santiago, Chile,

Pelé had not recovered from his injury
and was on the bench with the reserves.

Garrincha entered the game
with a fever of 102 degrees.

The Czechs, just like the Swedes in '58,

scored the first point
shortly after the start of the match.

And the Brazilians, exactly as in '58,
were able to respond and win the game.

With Garrincha sick and Pelé absent,

the Brazilian team had to prove itself.

All contributed equally to the victory.

The joy was overwhelming.

The Brazilian players,
just before starting the game,

listened as General Mendes de Morais,
then mayor of Rio,

spoke these final words of his address,

“I have fulfilled my duty
by building this stadium.

Now you must do your duty
by winning the World Cup.”

Soccer exercises a power
over the emotions of the people

comparable only to that of war.

It can bring a whole country
to the greatest sorrow or joy.

To explain this phenomenon,
there are two theories.

One says that the soccer ball
symbolizes the maternal womb,

which would explain the fierceness
with which the players dispute the game

and the fans' preoccupation
with the destiny of the ball.

The other, more sensible theory,

says that soccer is used to release
the people's built up emotions

that arise among the frustrations
of daily life.

The playful world of a stadium

is a more suitable field
for exercising human emotions.

The referee's final whistle
brings the fan back to his reality,

to the routine which starts each Monday,

and goes until the cycle closes
with the starting whistle of a new game.
