A small town situated
in Chile's lake district, Los Lagos.

It sits beside Lake Llanquihue,

and beneath the shadow
of the mighty Osorno volcano.

All right. Let's go, then.

Standing in the teams' way,
the Andes.

Forming over millions of years

and now towering up to
nearly 23,000 feet,

the longest mountain range
in the world

separates Chile from Argentina,

and the decision of where to cross
is crucial.

They could cross early
and enter Chile

by taking the northern border
through the Atacama Desert -

a rugged, less travelled route,

but with dramatic,
otherworldly scenery -

or head to the hub city of Mendoza,
where they have a choice -

either take the high-altitude
mountain pass

to Chile's capital, Santiago,
to find good transport links,

or continue south through
Argentina's beautiful Patagonia

before crossing the southern Andes
closer to Frutillar.

I think crossing the northern border
into Chile as quick as possible,

that's a win. Yeah.

And if we don't make it, at least
we can say we made it to Chile!

approaching,

tickets are at a premium.

So there's no buses

a nine-hour wait here.

This is the problem
when you've got loads of teams

descending on the same bus station.

I think that the other two teams

I actually don't know what to do.

a remnant of an ancient lake
evaporated over time.

I've never seen anything like this
before in my life.

It's the religious week,
everyone's moving around.

Like, we want to get
to the Patagonia region,

so we're happy to go to Neuquen,
or is there somewhere else?

We've only managed to get, like,

half the trip down there
towards Neuquen,

and I think if we get there,

there'll be some other
kind of options

to get more down towards Bariloche.

I thought this was going to be
a really straightforward route

and now obviously it's turning out
to be a little bit more complicated.

Recharging their batteries
after the long bus journey,

at the Cacheuta Thermal Spa.

Just like the shower that I spray in
when I haven't washed for two days.

I wash every day at home.

Buoyed by still holding
a healthy budget,

they relax before the final push.

The natural hot springs,
rich and rejuvenating minerals,

can reach up to 40 degrees.

Obviously seeing Fred happy
makes me really happy.

But in this hand,
I'm thinking about the race,

I'm thinking about the next steps,

and I find it really hard
to switch off from that.

I was brought up playing football
and it was train to win,

you play to win, it's a part of why
I'm really resilient.

But there are always going to be
the experiences like this

where I think it just demands
your focus be taken from the race

and just put on the now.

That's something
I'm really grateful for.

I feel like we deserve this

Well, we've made it to Chile.

We did. Quicker than I thought.

..already on the road to Santiago,

Scott and Sam are the second team
to traverse the Andes.

I've never seen anything like this.

It just goes on. The scale of it.

You know on these buses,
cos we've taken so many of them,

I normally sleep to pass the time?

But I don't want to sleep
on this one,

cos I'm worried I'll miss something.

Climbing 10,500 feet,

the crossing takes in views
of Mount Aconcagua,

the highest mountain
in the Americas.

Oh, my God.

I can't look at that. It's too high.

The descent is one of
the world's windiest roads,

a steep series
of continuous switchbacks.

I find it mad there's no barriers.

Oh, I don't like it.

That's my worst nightmare.

As the sun's setting
behind the mountain,

it's making the mountains
all look red.

What is it? Red sky at night,

I'd be saying that every night

The couple are the first team

to reach Chile's capital,

one of South America's

most expensive cities.

When me and Bobby lost our mum,
he had a big responsibility -

two very young boys
who were grieving -

and that's not very fun.

I feel like I haven't given myself
the time to grow up

because I've been holding on
to a lot of things

that happened to me...as a kid.

I've still got such a playful side.

These are the clearest skies

The cash-strapped cousins
are here to work at a campsite

run by Amador, who believes in
the healing power of the mountains.

We give the tent but bed mattress,
pillows and everything.

The memories that I have
of my parents are all lovely ones.

a larger-than-life character.

She fostered over 200 kids.

Both loved to embrace life.

My mum sadly passed from cancer

It was very hard,

to make something of myself

she would have wanted me to be.

I felt so free. It was incredible.

We've spent quite a big chunk
of our budget now on tickets.

It would really be something

This main transportation route
between Argentina and Chile

is a notoriously congested crossing
over the holiday period.
