I always dreamed of being an actor.

And then it gradually became something...

that I needed to do.

So I moved to Rome. I began training...

as an actor in Rome.

And after drama school, I got a break.

I was invited to take part in auditions,
not as an actor, but as a feed.

I had to feed the lines to the actors
who were auditioning,

for a series called Gomorrah. Gomorrah...

Initially I thought
it might be a great opportunity,

something that could help me
develop and improve,

compare myself with the actors
who would be auditioning.

It's fair to say that after...

five seasons of Gomorrah,

and seven intensely lived years...

it was a whole lot more than that.

My first memory of Gomorrah

was my then agent
advising me to audition for it

and I said I didn't want to do it.

Because I didn't think I could...

play certain types of character.

But I remember my first meeting
with Stefano Sollima,

and he gave me the idea
that maybe it could work.

We need to figure it out.
We have to kill people and we need money.

Or you die. You die,
because you're in this war just like me.

You bring the money in, I kill people.

We're the same!

These are my first memories,

apart from the fact that,
while I was doing my lines,

there was this big guy opposite me

who was feeding the lines to us.

So I was acting with him,
and I could already feel it...

What did I tell you to do?

Stay in the car.

What did you do instead?

Ok, I got out.

You turned the engine off.

-But I thought...
-You don't think. I think.

You just do what I say.

-Ok, sorry, Ciro.
-Sorry my fucking ass.

Don't ever get out of the car again!

You stay inside ready to get away!
Understand?

Genny, Salvio,
wasn't actually auditioning,

he was just acting
all the other characters' lines.

At some point, I decided to audition him,

because I realized that he was...

actually really good!

You know what happens
if you get bitten by that?

It constricts your throat...

paralyzes your muscles...

and you stop breathing.

I got called for the final audition,

but the thing
that really bowled me over that day,

was opening the door
and seeing Salvatore Esposito.

I was like, "Well, if he's here,
then they really...

want to know
what happens with the main character!"

My dad says you remember me.

But you do really remember?

Well, sort of.

Then it looks like I need
to refresh your memory.

The very first thing I remember
is the audition with Stefano Sollima,

and during it I, quote-unquote,
contradicted him about something.

Now, don't be like that.

It's the best solution.

For everyone.

This was a way forward for him,

the fact that I had
the courage to speak my mind

and assert my opinion,

was actually
one of the character's traits,

so it was a light bulb moment for him.

And you know this...

You know.

We'll not want for anything.

Never.

I'd heard that Stefano loved to see actors

who already had an attitude
that suited the world of the story.

So I remember I had this idea for Pietro,

and I got into character
even beyond the audition.

So I got there, and I was:
"Hi. All right? All good, yeah."

They came to shoot on a Sunday.

To my house.

There could have been kids there.

This isn't something we can fix.

-You have to go get him.
-We have to work out how to do this.

What is there to work out, Maradona?

If it was your son,
would you be working it out?

The second audition for Scianel was...

one of my favorite scenes
of Scianel's entire story,

when she first opens up, as it were.

You want to know the truth, love?

She's talking to Marinella and reveals
her feelings about being a woman.

Women should never get married.

Being a wife's difficult. Very difficult.

I showed up looking totally wrong.

I was wearing
a brightly colored striped T-shirt.

For a character
that would be completely the opposite.

I didn't know the character.
He had a different name.

I'm not from Forcella.

I was born and raised
a long way from here.

Enzo is my brother.

You're all my brothers.

I was in the theater
and I got a phone call.

I call my agent, they tell me:
"Audition for Gomorrah. "

And I thought: "So what can I do in this?"

I had a beard this big...

I'd have been better
for Games of Thrones than Gomorrah!

See how I deal? We have
to handle our clan the same way.

But then I realized it was
my secret weapon for that role.

If we get a club,
we have to get one of ours in there.

You know how?

Those times, those ten days,

they're imprinted in my mind.
I often think back to them.

I'd go into the dressing room,

Marco D'Amore would get different names
up on my dressing room door.

This is mine.

One time I'd be Pascoli, then Manzoni,
even Dante Alighieri...

Because he considers me a poet, a writer.

We paid tribute
to all of Italian literature.

What is it?

I'm going back to Secondigliano.

It's too soon.

This was the location
for one of the bitterest conflicts

between Genny Savastano and Don Pietro
in the second season of Gomorrah.

It was perhaps the beginning of the end
for the two of them.

And, of course,
we all know how season two ended.

What do you say, Gennaro?

Of the two of us,
only one is wounded like you say.

And it's you.

The great thing about Gomorrah, though,

is the rapport that grew
between the actors in the show.

A rapport that exists to this day,

with Fortunato Cerlino,
who played Don Pietro,

Maria Pia Calzone.

But most of all, there's one person who...
I can't take it any more.

Even in this fifth season,
he's been pulling pranks on me.

Marco D'Amore.

That said, I think if...

Marco D'Amore hadn't played
Ciro Di Marzio in Gomorrah,

Genny and Ciro's relationship
probably wouldn't be the same.

Take two!

He's The Immortal, he grew up alone,
he's never had anything in his life,

but he's very ambitious.

He'll do absolutely anything
to get what he wants.

We become partners.

Gennaro's a kid, just a big baby, really

who goes through an incredible change

and in fact becomes
a different character, even physically.

So, all this complexity...

in the writing is one of the reasons
for the show's success.

I know you.

You're like me.

Ciro and Genny are...

blood brothers.

What I mean is...

Nothing in their relationship
escapes this blood bond,

even when they're trying
to kill each other.

I've never hated anyone like I hated you.

Their alliance is an entity
that's almost beyond their control.

It's like a love...

that they can...

negotiate only by surrendering to it.

It's like a demon you can...

only master by bowing to its will.

There's no other way.

They must bow
before the demon that binds them.

After all we've done to each other,
we're still here.

Just you and me.

You can't really define
Ciro and Genny's relationship,

because we've seen these two characters
love and hate each other,

cry for each other, fight each other...

Shoot if you're gonna shoot.

And then we're done with it.

And this is something that makes me proud,

and makes me happy, because I've had
the pleasure and the opportunity

to create this relationship
and this connection with Marco,

but above all
because we created this iconic couple,

even though they're anti-heroes.

If a friend betrays you,
is he still a friend?

I've never betrayed you.

Gomorrah has in some ways changed
the way we make films and TV series,

certainly in Italy,
but maybe elsewhere also.

It's good, because with this series
we've shown

that with determination,
commitment and quality,

we can also make our mark internationally.

I think this has been
a big win for everyone.

And... well,
I'll leave a part of me here...

As a number one
or number two fan of the series,

I'm sure that in a few years seeing...

an episode of Gomorrah...

will put a smile on my face.

It will be emotional.

I have to say in human terms,

even more than in the professional sense.

And there's a part of me today...

that I owe to Gomorrah.

It's an experience that only we can know,

that we've gone through and that's ours.

Gomorrah will be unforgettable,

because it coincides
with a particular time in my life.

During the filming of Gomorrah ,
I discovered I had breast cancer,

so Scianel became my "superhero cape".

It was as if Scianel helped me
get through this time.

She became my shield.

When the wolf is injured,
the pack leaves him behind.

So I was able to see myself as strong,

invincible and tough.

And then I could go back home
and accept my fragility.

So, for this I will ever thankful
to Scianel and Gomorrah.

I can't thank you enough,
each and every one of you!

I remember it as one of the biggest
and best experiences of my life.

Not just professionally,
but as a life experience.

I remember some mind-blowing locations,

I remember
the laughs I had with my friends,

I remember the cold, the freezing cold.

Those were the unforgettable times for me.

You're left with feelings of...

of sadness, but also pride
in the work you've done.

A word from Gomorrah's longest-serving
director. How many episodes is it?

-Nineteen episodes, guys.
-Nineteen episodes!

-It's a record!
-Gomorrah has been a journey,

in human and artistic terms,

on a personal level...

and an education
about this country's hidden mechanisms,

which I think we should know
and we should tell.

You don't live here.

You just die here.

Action!

Thanks to Gomorrah,
I got to make my debut as a director,

I got into writing,

I wrote my own film
along with some other writers,

and this could only have happened
with Gomorrah .

It's an experience
that's been crucial for my career

and I hope it will yield dividends
in the long-term.

Cut! Good one, let's move on.

As well as becoming
a cultural phenomenon here, Gomorrah...

has heralded the relaunch of the industry,

and I personally think
it has opened up the market.

For anyone involved in Gomorrah,
there was a before and an after,

and I think for Italian TV drama,
there's a before and after Gomorrah.

To describe it, I use words like "family",

words like "gratitude,"
words like "warmth",

words like "professionalism",

it's like...

the essence of our work.

And of course
it's also a great source of pride,

which isn't
about the show's success or failure,

but because making it
was such an exhausting effort.

I mean, what you eventually
saw on the TV screen,

was preceded
by four years of false starts.

I'd have to say, "It's my life,"
but I've also totally loathed Gomorrah

and everything it's done to me.

It's also my revenge.

Justice has no mercy on anyone.

Its only companion is the truth.

In the end, Gomorrah is...

an odyssey in the cesspit of power...

that you have to retell...

without fear of looking it in the eye.

It is the story of a people
subjugated and overwhelmed...

by lust for profit.

The world changes.

But we never change.

This is our strength.

It's probably...

all that's left of me,

and for it I've paid a price
that I never imagined possible.

It's about recounting a reality
that's hard to stomach,

a reality that is shared
by Naples, Italy, Europe and the world.

Recounting the world's
marginalized territories that live this.

It's about getting inside the characters
to find a reason for their behavior,

their actions, their words,

trying to work out
if these people would be different

if their circumstances were different...

For me, Gomorrah is all this.

It's about bringing a ray of light...

to a place where there's too much shadow.

I love her

I love her so much!

I spent years and years
in Naples with Gomorrah,

and maybe, at the end of the day,

what stays with me the most is...

Naples itself.

Naples and the experience
of its extreme contradictions,

and its unchallengeable beauty.

Naples is a wonderful,
multifaceted place, full of possibilities.

It's a magical city, it's a city...

that's open, it's a city blessed
by the sun, a city that offers itself

with extreme generosity.

Central Naples
is like a beautiful siren...

standing there looking at you.

You hear her sing
and fall in love with her.

The Camorra is a thing against Naples,
it doesn't define Naples.

It's something that exists...

despite Naples.

And before you know it,
you've crashed on the rocks.

I've always been saddened,
but sometimes amused

that at some point the theme itself
had become the show,

and that the problem wasn't the fact

that criminal cartels had plagued
an area for 50 years,

but was in fact...

Us. All of a sudden, we had...

decided to tell these themes
to drive our story.

We are not allies,

but we're all part of the same system.

And this system demands
that we show mutual respect.

The situation in Scampia
is also very different on account of...

this spotlight,
and not just the community groups

and to some extent the state.

But this spotlight
has changed many, many things.

It was nice
doing this bit of road together.

Our road doesn't end here.

Gomorrah gives you
new optics, new tools and...

insights to help you
avoid subjection to that power.

"What was Gomorrah - The Series " for you?

The series changed my life,
in every sense of the word.

For me it was a dream come true.

Gomorrah was a beautiful journey.

Unique and rare.
A memory I'll cherish forever.

It's the flavor of a macaroni frittata
from Via dei Tribunali.

The condemnation of a horrendous Naples
and the ingenuity of using a new language.

It's a smack in the face, no apologies.

A beautiful, wonderful experience.

It's a pure soul
grafted onto a twisted head.

It'll always be in our hearts.

But above all else, Gomorrah is...

was and will always be one big family.
