[Melody of Golden Age]

[Episode 20]

Give it to me.

That's more like it. Thanks!

Let's take a look over there.

This is interesting!

It's fortune-telling.

Let's read our fortune.

Confucius does not speak of superstition.

We've come to a temple.

Save your "superstition" speech!

Let's go!

The twenty-fourth lot.

Give it a try.

I…

[The Twenty-Fourth Lot]

It's the twenty-fourth lot again!

Wait! I didn't put the lot back properly.

Let me try again!

[The Twenty-Fourth Lot]

It's still the twenty-fourth lot!

Enough, since it's always the twenty-fourth lot,

let's see what it says.

Over there.

Twenty-fourth.

- Fate ties you from the past life. - Fate ties you from the past life.

- Now the time has come to accept destiny. - Now the time has come to accept destiny.

What does that mean?

Why isn't there anyone to interpret divination?

That's not right. Such fortune-telling can't be accurate.

I think it's quite accurate.

Confucius does not speak of superstition.

"Fate." Isn't it quite accurate?

Chuichui!

Chuichui!

Do you have feelings for me?

Don't listen to her!

Brother Xu,

I do find you different from the others.

But that's because

you never look down on female officials like the others at the Six Ministries.

You always help me wholeheartedly.

Therefore, I've long seen you like my older brother.

But there's only respect and nothing else.

Well, that's good! What a relief!

Look! If you don't mind accepting me as your sworn brother,

then I would truly be overjoyed.

Brother!

My sweet little sixth sister!

In that case, let the Mingsheng Temple be our witness.

From now on, we'll be sworn siblings.

This token is for you.

Holding this token,

you can command all the inspectors wherever you go.

This is too much. This is your token of command.

Your brother doesn't rely on this

to command the inspectors.

Here, take it!

No, I can't.

It's okay, take it.

In times of danger, it may save your life. [Marshal of Inspectors]

I really appreciate it, Brother Xu!

That's more like it.

I will take my leave.

See you around, Sixth Sister!

Even Marshal Xu is not to your liking?

Yun Que.

Learn something useful from Lu Chuichui.

You are so weird.

It's one thing not to fancy the White Ghost,

but Marshal Xu is righteous and full of passion.

Isn't he the ideal lover women could dream of?

Why don't you like him either?

Yan Xing, do you think something is wrong with you?

I…

How come you're criticizing me

just like when you criticized me for not liking Shen Du back then?

Could it be...

that you like Marshal Xu?

Is there a problem?

Marshal Xu saved my life.

And he's so manly.

If he has doubts, he just asks openly.

He's straightforward and never jealous or paranoid,

unlike some guys who can't speak up

and keeps everything to themselves,

as if they are ready to do something to you at any time.

Your preference changes quite fast.

Anyway, Marshal Xu is the perfect gentleman for me.

It's good that you're not competing with me and I don't have to share this time.

You never had to share anyone with me.

- I've decided. - What?

I'm leaving the Shen Mansion.

I've had enough of that capricious White Ghost.

I will join Marshal Xu to be a chivalrous female inspector.

Okay, I support you!

If he doesn't accept you, I'll sit with you to protest.

That's my good sister!

You guys…

Where is Jiang Langxing?

He's so old-fashioned and boring that I dumped him.

The Lady Serpent is such a beauty!

So beautiful!

Why is it so crowded?

It's not the main hall.

Sixth Miss?

Registrar Lu!

What are you both doing here?

Pan?

Lu Chuichui, are you ever going to stop?!

Who else will you bring here?

I didn't call him here.

What's wrong? I'm not supposed to be here?

It's so lively here. I am Pan Chi.

Joining the fun is in my nature.

Are you also here for the Lady Serpent?

Lady Serpent?

Pan, are you okay?

I'm fine. I'm fine!

Stop hiding! I saw you!

Madam, I…

Jing Lin, how come you're here?

I…

I…

I am here to protect Madam on behalf of the Great Chief,

lest someone harbors ulterior motives!

- Who are you talking about? - Who do you think I am talking about? It's that person.

Shen Du sent you to follow me?

He's fine, right?

No, of course not.

Madam, during the days when you were not at home,

Great Chief couldn't bring himself to eat or drink.

He has lost so much weight!

He lost weight in just half a day?

Not only that, he's also haggard!

Every night, the Great Chief calls out your name.

Just like this.

Sixth Miss, don't leave!

Sixth Miss!

Did he really say that?

I didn't expect that he couldn't bear to…

Well, if that's the case,

I will go back with you.

For fear he falls ill because of this and blames me.

Sixth Miss, you're leaving?

Shen Du is injured.

I have to take care of him.

So block-headed!

See you around!

Fine, let her be! What a bummer!

- Let's see the Lady Serpent. - Lady Serpent.

Excuse me! Excuse me!

Excuse me!

Oh heavens! What a pretty Lady Serpent!

So beautiful!

She gave up the chance to attain immortality and came to the mortal world

to share her cultivated elixir that has been cultivated for a thousand years with everyone.

Elixir?

It's called the Elixir of Celestial Beauty.

It gives women tender and fair skin and unprecedented charm.

Single ladies may meet with their ideal matches.

Men can also ask for some to give to their loved ones.

The Lady Serpent wishes all the couples a long and happy marriage.

Lady Serpent, please bestow us with the Elixir of Celestial Beauty!

Ladies and gentlemen, the Elixir of Celestial Beauty is worth a fortune.

Supply is limited. Whoever wants it can get one with ten taels of gold.

- Tender and fair skin! - So expensive!

Unprecedented charm!

Maybe there's a reason it's so expensive.

- That's true. Let's go! - Let's go!

All right, the Elixir of Celestial Beauty is sold out!

- That's it? - I've come three times and gotten nothing.

If you wish to obtain the elixir, come back in three days.

Maybe next time. Let's go!

How do you feel today? Does the wound still hurt?

No.

Why do you look so sullen?

Do I?

Why do you look beaming with joy? Found someone you like?

But Jing Lin said…

It looks like you're enjoying yourself.

That's right. While you're away, I am happy to enjoy peace and tranquility. I'm surely doing well.

[Marshal of Inspectors]

You went to see Xu Xiangren?

Yeah. It just so happened. What about it?

It just so happened?

At the temple where people pray for romance? And he gave you the marshal's token?

Brother Xu gave me this as my sworn brother. Don't be paranoid!

Why…

Why would I be paranoid?

Indeed. You wouldn't be paranoid.

Once you've recovered, visit Mingsheng Temple as well.

It works like a charm. You might actually get what you wish for.

What would I wish for?

[Su Guang]

Stop crying! What's all the fuss about?

Ma'am, my belly hurts so much!

May I come down for a bit?

I shouldn't have let you eat at night. Be careful. Don't get the tail dirty.

Be careful. Don't get the tail dirty.

- Thank you, Ma'am. - Xiaobao, come out for a moment.

Guard the door.

All right!

What a fraud!

A cultivating Lady Serpent?

She's clearly a young lady kidnapped by traffickers.

Farewell, Miss.

You…

I don't think I have anything of value with me.

Perhaps, only this is worth some money.

Please have it.

Here, take it!

Why do you have the Moth Jade? You're with the Huo'e Sect?

This isn't mine.

All my things were confiscated after I was kidnapped in Gannandao.

It's from the person who snatched me.

So you were snatched in Gannandao?

Was the trafficker someone from Xiang'an?

Judging by his accent, he should be a local at Gannandao.

The Huo'e Sect gained momentum in Xiang'an in a very short time.

How did it spread to Gannandao so fast?

That's not right.

When were you kidnapped?

I don't remember it very well.

But it's been months at least.

Miss, do you remember the way back home?

I have a way to travel between the Western Regions and the Jinwu Tribe.

How about this? Follow me.

I'll help you look for merchant caravans to the Western Regions.

Really?

Let's go!

Can you really attend the court meeting?

Your wound hasn't healed so you shouldn't move.

It's just a court meeting, not an arrest.

People would see you as a widow if I still don't show up.

Be careful, then.

These days,

- be— - Great Chief!

Great Chief. Madam. An oral edict came.

The Empress Dowager summoned Madam to the palace.

Grand Empress Dowager, this is Clerk Yan Xing.

I pay my respects, Your Majesty!

We're alone here. Spare the formalities.

Please rise.

Shen Du has done well in the case of Chen Huo'e.

I have not decided how to reward him.

Tell me. How should I reward him this time?

Whatever you bestow on him is a grace from Your Majesty.

No matter whether there is a reward, we will be deeply grateful.

You're still a minor official, but you have learned all the cliches in the officialdom.

Please forgive me!

Grand Empress Dowager, why must you give Clerk Yan a hard time?

Great Chief Shen was already leading the Imperial Guards

and he was made the Guard of the Capital.

He can't be promoted any further.

Why don't you give Clerk Yan some tangible rewards?

You are certainly siding with her.

I just feel that Clerk Yan's determination to become a female official

reminds me of my younger self.

So I feel like we are kindred spirits.

If that is the case,

then I shall promote Clerk Yan Xing to the position of Senior Clerk.

Grand Empress Dowager, I was going to take the exam this year, anyway.

I want to take the exam on my own and become a Senior Clerk.

Of course, you will take the exam.

The female officials of the Six Ministries are promoted and demoted based on ability.

The Empress Dowager is making you the Senior Clerk to present you with a greater challenge.

If you take the exam as a clerk, you remain a clerk even if you fail

and become a senior clerk if you pass.

But if you take the exam as a senior clerk, then you face greater risks.

If you fail, you'll be dismissed.

But if you pass, you'll have the opportunity to be promoted to Chief Clerk.

Do you dare to take the risk?

I won’t let Your Majesty or Madam Xu down.

All right. Madam Xu was right about you.

Senior Clerk Yan, I'm looking forward to your performance in the exam.

You and Shen Du are truly in love. It's so enviable!

Actually, he…

Actually, he sent me a message long ago,

asking me to take extra care of you

just in case you make a mistake due to nervousness.

He's probably afraid that I would disgrace the Shen family.

Is that so?

I don't think so.

I've known him for years and I've never seen him so concerned about someone.

Madam Xu, thank you for helping me today!

And thank you for telling me this!

I am very pleased!

And let me thank you for your trust.

Back then, when Jing Lin gave me the memorial on the case of Chen Huo'e,

I realized what you wanted.

We weren't so acquainted, yet you entrusted your life to me.

I trust you. And I trust that Shen Du wouldn't misjudge a person.

But I feel my wife is perfect.

Let's go with this one.

It's simple. It suits you.

Although you have someone you can't let go of,

you have been nice to me.

Since it hasn't been three months yet,

let's cherish the rest of the days we have.

I pay my respect to Your Highness!

All right. I've heard that you're marrying Young Master Han soon.

I've come to congratulate you!

Thank you, Your Highness!

What for?

You're the one getting married.

What does it have to do with me?

You certainly have lofty expectations.

I heard that you didn't even like Great Chief Shen.

What a pity!

Your taste really isn't that good!

Have a cup of tea from me.

May all your wishes come true!

If the wedding falls through,

you'd better not blame it on me.

[Guangyue Wine House]

I'm sorry! Are you all right?

I'm fine.

[Shen Mansion]

Sixth Miss! Sixth Miss!

Master wants to see you at home.

Third Miss is in trouble!

Young Master Han, let me see my sister.

What is this?

This silk net has grown during the day.

Please save Caiwei!

Sixth Miss.

We've asked for an imperial physician during the day.

But he couldn't form a diagnosis no matter what.

Have you ever seen such symptoms?

I can't tell what this is, either.

But judging from her look, I don't think she's ill.

I think she was poisoned!

Poisoned?

What kind of evil soul wants to hurt my daughter?

Poisoned?

It's Princess Yong'an.

Third Miss visited Princess Yong'an today.

You got my daughter into trouble.

Why did you also mingle with Princess Yong'an?

Stop talking nonsense!

Why would Princess Yong'an poison Third Miss?

Sixth Miss, don't try to show off!

The imperial physicians came and yet only you could tell it was poisoning?

I just feel it's poisoning,

but I can't determine what poison it is,

even less who administered it.

Transparent filamentous patterns on the body like silkworm cocoons.

Silkworm cocoons.

Could it be Chen Huo'e?

No way. Chen Huo'e was executed.

I saw it with my own eyes.

She couldn't poison anyone.

I figured it out.

I went to the Imperial Guards and asked Guard Jing to check the archives.

The Huo'e Sect used to have a poison called "Butterfly out of Cocoons."

Fifth Brother, Chen Huo'e has been executed.

Can we find any former followers of the sect?

This is the tricky part.

Ever since Chen Huo'e died,

the Huo'e Sect seemed to have vanished into thin air and no news whatsoever since.

Even the Imperial Guards had no clues in their archives.

How can we conduct any investigations?

Should we go to Princess Yong'an?

Since it has to do with Chen Huo'e,

then let's not mention Princess Yong'an again.

We may be in serious trouble for slandering the royal family if we get Princess Yong'an into this.

We may be in serious trouble for slandering the royal family if we get Princess Yong'an into this.

Have you forgotten the extermination of the Jinxiu Workshop?

If it's the poison of the Huo'e Sect,

then it may not necessarily be Princess Yong'an's doing.

Yan Xing,

I'm afraid your sister was implicated by you.

- Han Shiyuan, you— - Mother.

Young Master Han is right.

I've implicated Third Sister and made her a target

for the remnants of the Huo'e Sect.

It's all my fault.

Rest assured.

I will save her even if it costs me my life!

Stop right there!

Who are you going to fight again?

Do you want me to lose another daughter?

Father.

Sixth Miss.

You are also my daughter.

Father, rest assured. I will be very careful.

And I swear I will save my sister.

[Ministry of Justice]

That's not it.

Butterfly out of Cocoons.

Where is the antidote formula of the poison?

[Tomb of Beloved Wife Wang Ruohan]

[Tomb of Beloved Wife Wang Ruohan]

Mother,

I haven't come to see you recently.

Are you angry with me?

Actually, I wanted to visit you.

It's just that…

I'm afraid of seeing someone.

That person...

usually acts like a devil.

Everyone is afraid of him.

But when he appears as a mysterious figure,

he's interesting and considerate,

completely different from his usual self.

Mother,

you have also seen him.

I even considered him a friend back then.

His mother has probably become good friends with you.

Mother,

he doesn't seem like a bad person to you either. Right?

Then…

Then what should I do?

Just think of me as the mysterious person,

Masked Man.

Y-You're here?

I've always been here.

V-Vice Minister Lai.

Like I said, when we're here,

you can go on treating me as Masked Man,

and your friend.

Even the Black Fiend needs friends?

Perhaps it's worth trying.

That's true! Even the White Ghost can get married.

Naturally, the Black Fiend needs to make friends, too.

However, my friends and I must be equal.

We must help each other when needed and share secrets.

You…

Why don't you go first?

I'll listen and see.

Sharing secrets...

I don't really have any secrets these days.

But I've run out of pocket money and dined at the Shen Mansion.

Does it count?

Okay, my turn now.

You have a secret to share with me?

I know you're close to Yan Xing.

I heard that her third sister was poisoned with "Butterfly out of Cocoons".

And I just so happen to have the formula for the antidote.

Where did you get it?

The Imperial Inspectorate arrested and interrogated Chen Huo'e twice.

You know about this.

I obtained the formula of the antidote back then.

Why are you giving it to me?

I can give you the formula but under one condition.

- What is it? - Don't tell anyone it's from me.

Why not? You're doing a good deed.

Why can't I tell anyone it's from you?

Of course, you don't have to believe me.

Nor does Yan Xing.

Firstly, I'm not sure if the formula is authentic.

If it doesn't work or makes things worse, I take no responsibility.

Secondly, it contains a rare ingredient,

which is the blood from the heart of a mirror-image person.

Whether you can find it depends on Sixth Miss Yan's luck.

Sixth Miss.

You stayed up all night?

Chuichui, I can't keep you company today.

I am looking for a life-saving formula.

Sixth Miss, take a look at this.

The antidote for "Butterfly out of Cocoons"?

How did you know my third sister was poisoned?

Where did you get this formula from?

I-I got it from a friend of mine.

A friend?

Since when did you have such a resourceful friend?

Anyway, it seems that this formula

comes from the Imperial Inspectorate,

supposedly obtained during the interrogation of Chen Huo'e.

But we don't know if it's real.

I don't know if it works.

- The Imperial Inspectorate? - Yes.

Chen Huo'e.

The one who makes the poison has the antidote.

Then who administrated it?

How did you just happen to get this?

I…

Forget about that for now.

Maybe you should take this formula

to a pharmacy to discern its authenticity and see if it's poisonous.

And even if it is real,

it needs the blood from the heart of a mirror-image person.

But isn't Chen Huo'e the only mirror-image person in this world?

And wasn't she killed by your husband, the White Ghost?

Yeah, Chen Huo'e is dead.

Where can we find another mirror-image person?

Master Chen Wen has gone into the mountains for fasting.

We don't know when he'll return. Clerk Yan, you should know.

Marshal Xu? Let alone you, even I haven't seen him these days.

Excuse me. Do you know where Pan Chi is?

You're looking for Pan?

He's been gone for days.

I heard he went with some beauty

to chase the Xichen merchant caravan.

Young people are really absurd. Absurd!

Your Highness, Third Miss Yan has been poisoned!

Third Mss Yan is poisoned?

And I heard it's a deadly poison that cannot be cured.

What I did was just a minor punishment as a warning.

I merely put some herbs that induce nightmares in her tea.

I have consulted the imperial physicians.

I'm sure it's not deadly.

So someone is trying to set you up!

Yes, that's right!

Third Miss Yan's life is not worthy of anything.

But her father, Academician Yan, works for Prime Minister Zhang.

Her sister, Yan Xing, is the wife of Shen Du.

If she dies,

wouldn't I be at odds with Prince Xian and the Imperial Guards?

No doubt the poisoner harbors such malicious intent.

Beat him up! Harder!
