[Episode 26]

Great Chief, I'm afraid there won't be a welcoming banquet today.

Mr. Pan found an important figure in the case of the headless corpse.

- Who is it? - His name is Liu Zongyuan.

He rents next door to the victim Li Kaixiang.

After what happened, quite a bit of Li's fields ended up in his hands.

So, I went to his house to investigate only to find that he had just moved out.

Governor Mo, can you dispatch some people to look for him?

Bring him back if possible.

No problem.

Great Chief, my apologies.

This is an unexpected situation. Please forgive me.

The case matters more. Governor Mo, don't blame yourself.

Since he was just gone and the city gate was not so close,

why not close the city?

I will have my guards search for him too.

Maybe we can catch this person.

You're right, Great Chief.

I will ask Bi Qiu to draft a decree to put the city under lockdown.

I hope we arrest the real culprit soon.

If we can also dispel the rumors

about the Half-faced Demons eating people in their sleep,

that would be even better.

I may be late tonight. Don't wait up.

Let's go.

I have to go.

It's still early. How about we visit Li Kairui in the jail?

We searched every corner of Yingzhou,

but Liu Zongyuan was nowhere to be seen.

He either escaped the city or he is hiding out in some mansion.

We've closed the city gates and set up checkpoints.

The chances of Liu Zongyuan escaping the city are slim.

Governor Mo. I suggest we search

the mansions where the suspect might be hiding one more time.

Better not. The people in the city are already on edge because of the recent murder cases.

The people in the city are already on edge because of the recent murder cases.

If they see us searching mansions in the middle of the night,

I'm afraid they'll be unsettled.

As you can see, we've set up checkpoints.

My people will inspect whoever wants to enter and leave.

He can't get away.

Get in.

Next.

Write here.

What's in the bag?

The troops of Yingzhou are truly disciplined.

The commander must have spent a lot of effort and money on them.

They have top-quality breastplates and shoulder guards,

unlike the usual border soldiers.

You are from the Imperial City. You must have seen a lot of fine military equipment.

The armor they have is nothing to speak of.

Yingzhou is located at the western border.

Defense is of utmost importance.

We save on expenses everywhere.

All the money I saved, I spent on military supplies.

There's no other way.

Great Chief, we found him.

This is Senior Clerk Yan from the Ministry of Justice. She has some questions for you

[Li Kairui] Senior Clerk. I'm innocent, Senior Clerk.

Don't rush to plead your innocence. Just answer my questions.

As long as you can clear my name, I will do whatever it takes.

Do you know Liu Zongyuan?

Yes, he's on good terms with my older brother.

I invited him and my older brother for a drink that day

but something came up and he had to go.

Therefore, no one can prove my innocence.

Do you know where he's from?

I only know that he is a businessman,

who's offered my brother advice in business.

Does Liu Zongyuan know martial arts?

No. He is just a businessman.

Are you sure?

I remember once a snake got into his house,

my brother caught it for him.

Senior Clerk Yan, what are you noting down?

The case details.

There's also a portrait of the Half-faced Demon

I drew with my imagination.

I didn't expect you to have such a talent.

Why don't you let me see what the Half-faced Demon looks like in your imagination?

You can see it when we go back.

If you look at it now, it can be very spooky.

If we attract the Half-faced Demon here, none of us would survive.

That's true.

Right after your brother died, there was nothing at the incision.

But one day, some of the crimes he had committed just surfaced at the incision.

Do you know about this?

No, I don't know anything.

In that case, you'd better come with us to check on the body.

We have no idea about those accusations. You can explain to us if you come with us.

You can explain to us if you come with us.

- Guards. - Here.

No, no. I'd rather not see it.

That's too horrifying. I really can't stand it.

Besides, he was my elder brother.

That's one more reason for you to see his body.

You've been pleading your innocence. It's just some accusation. Don't be so nervous.

Don't be so nervous.

Then… Please. I'm begging you.

I-I confess. I confess.

My brother had done some foolish things,

but nothing to be decapitated for.

My brother was a gambler when he was young, and our family went broke.

He reflected on himself, quit gambling, and started a small business.

He made quite some money.

But he started borrowing money again and even mortgaged the fields.

We suspected that he had started gambling again.

But it turned out that he had been tricked by the charlatan

introduced by a neighbor to waste his money on elixirs.

Because of that, we had a huge fight.

Shortly after, Liu Zongyuan, the neighbor who introduced him to the charlatan

came straight to Dafu's teahouse.

Liu Zongyuan!

Gentlemen. Please calm down.

I didn't come here to anger you.

I'm here to talk business with you.

We have nothing to say to you.

If you hadn't introduced that charlatan to my brother,

would he have ended up like this?

How dare you even come here?

What have you done to his brother? He even sold all the fields.

How can you do this? Do you have no conscience?

I only mentioned that charlatan in a chit-chat

as an interesting anecdote.

I had no idea that Mr. Li would be so obsessed that he sold his properties.

I truly regretted it.

All I can do now is to help him minimize the losses.

I've been managing his business these days.

And I've bought those properties

that he sold off in his name.

If you don't believe me, here's the receipt.

Dafu, this…

It turned out that Liu Zongyuan was a good guy.

The three of us agreed to get my brother out

for a drink in two days to persuade him to mend his ways.

Well, Mr. Ji.

I just remembered some issues I encountered in the business.

I'd like to ask you for advice.

[Li Kaixiang] Can we talk in private?

Alright. Go ahead and enjoy the drinks.

We will talk outside and join you later.

Go ahead, gentlemen.

I know they were trying to leave us alone for me to talk to him.

Come on, Kaixiang.

Kaixiang. Look at you. What's going on with you?

You lost so much weight in just a few days.

From now on, stop believing in those charlatans.

Living your life well is better than anything.

Kairui, you don't understand.

Master Yuan truly has magical powers.

He can summon immortals. I have seen it with my own eyes.

Kairui, in my opinion, you should forget about those trivial matters at hand

and cultivate with me to become immortals.

Enough with your "immortals"! Those are just frauds!

Kaixiang. We've worked so hard all these years, so how…

How can you fall for those so easily? And you're obsessed?

Can you justify it to our parents in heaven?

- What about all our hard work? - Enough, you are the fool here!

You don't even believe in your brother. Would I mean you harm?

Since we can't communicate, what's the point of trying?

Kaixiang, you…

[Dafu Teahouse]

And I have been jailed ever since.

I woke up only to see that.

I really can't figure out what exactly happened that day.

Senior Clerk Yan, I think it's about time. We should get going.

It's time? For what?

However, you'll need to get changed.

Why did you bring me to such a place?

Because I've found a clue, of course.

It's not easy to book the top courtesan. Hurry up.

Mr. Pan, you're finally here.

Please come to the room on the third floor.

Come on, this way.

This way.

Alright, I'm having fun. Drink with me.

Please.

Mr. Pan, rest well here.

Xiuxiu will be here soon.

Like a dream, like a fairy, suddenly all is scattered.

Where has the sunset glow gone, leaving the green screen void?

You are really impressive.

You have acquaintances everywhere you go.

It seems that you are a regular here, huh?

I come here only to solve cases, nothing else.

Since Xiuxiu is the top courtesan, she must be very pretty.

I'd also like to see how the beauty of Gannandao differs from that of Xiang'an.

The rose is no match for the beauty's cheeks.

The breeze by the water carries the scent of a beauty.

[Xiuxiu] In your poem, the autumn wind wafts and the roses bloom.

Even the dew-laden lotus flowers can't compare with the beauty.

The fragrance borne by the wind is even sweeter than that of the lotus.

I only wonder to whom you dedicate such a verse.

The beauty dances like a blooming lotus.

A sight that the world should have yet to see.

It doesn't matter to whom it's dedicated.

What matters is that the beauty is right here yet she doesn't know my heart.

Miss Xiuxiu. I asked you to look into Liu Zongyuan.

What about the verses I asked for?

I have it in mind, naturally.

I also remember what you've asked me to do.

When Liu Zongyuan first came here,

he could barely afford to have tea in the main hall.

But only Heaven knows when he became so generous

and often asked for me.

Let me tell you. That family is all fools.

I tricked them with nothing but some hand-written receipts.

His brother and brother-in-law really need some of the medicine.

Maybe we should get them to buy some elixir.

You're the worst.

Liu Zongyuan must have colluded with the swindlers

to seize the victim's property.

In that case, Liu Zongyuan benefited the most from Li Kaixiang's death.

Step by step, he seized the Li family's properties

until he drained their assets dry and fled.

Maybe he chopped off the head of the victim

to link everything to the Half-faced Demon

to terrify the people and mislead us.

Xiuxiu and Pan Chi haven't known each other for long.

Why would she confide in him so much and tell him everything?

While you were watering the flowers, I wrote a new verse.

Washed by the rain, a few flowers bloom gently.

On a cool summer day, she shows her delicate grace.

Like the lotuses unstained by mud. Tired of watching.

A butterfly brings a good mood over the wall.

The green leaves ripple with the gentle breeze. Gently hold.

A fragrance wafts from the beauty's sleeves.

The pretty young lady has her hair coiled up.

Secretly snips. A touch of bright red solidifies on the fingertips.

You two, keep this gentleman company.

Greetings, my lord.

What…

I guess the boss lady is experienced.

Dressing as a man can't fool her.

My lord, here's a toast to you.

You've been working hard on cases.

It's a rare chance to chill out. Drink up.

I…

Great Chief, why are you here?

I can explain. I swear we went to the Xiuxiang Pavilion for work.

I didn't summon those male escorts. I didn't touch them at all.

I believe you.

I'm not angry about that.

It's just that you should let me know if you're going out to work at night.

I couldn't find you at home and I got worried.

It was a rushed decision.

I will definitely let you know in advance next time.

Right, have you found Liu Zongyuan?

He tricked Li Kaixiang and got his properties.

And he's very likely the murderer.

We did find him.

Let's interrogate him now.

He's turned into a corpse, unable to speak now.

Liu Zongyuan lost his liver, and it was carved out from here.

People laugh at the moths flying into the flame

yet they don't know that mayflies

are born at dawn, dead by dusk, not entering the cycle of rebirth,

while moths survive the fire and await reincarnation.

An animal disguised as a human. Punishment awaits.

Disrespect of the Huo'e. Disaster comes from the sky.

Half-faced Demon and Huo'e Sect again.

Liu Zongyuan was a martial artist.

Look at the calluses on his hands.

So, Liu Zongyuan pretended to be unskilled in martial arts

as a businessman and killed people in secret.

But later, someone took him out.

Perhaps we have overcomplicated it.

There is an easier way to find the real murderer.

Liu Zongyuan swindled the Li's properties and forced Li Kaixiang to loan money.

Who suffered the most?

Li Kaixiang is dead. Li Kairui is in prison.

And that leaves us with…

Ji Dafu.

That's right. Actually, I have been wondering.

Liu Zongyuan claimed that he had bought the properties back

in the name of Li Kaixiang

with nothing but some forged deeds.

How did Ji Dafu get scammed and believe that Liu was a good person?

No matter what, Ji Dafu runs a teahouse.

Wouldn't he have doubts about such a selfless act?

Either Ji Dafu is naive enough to trust others easily, or…

Or he never believed in Liu Zongyuan's story.

in Liu Zongyuan's story.

From beginning to end, he's been meaning to take revenge on Liu Zongyuan.

Since Ji Dafu is a suspect,

we might as well look into him.

- Watch your mouth. - What are you doing?

Don't push me.

- Get lost. - My lord. Please do me justice.

These people are unreasonable and they're bullying me.

We have work to do. Let me go.

You must help me settle this.

You should report to the officials.

The Governor will do you justice.

Right, I should go to the officials.

Why should I ask you for help?

Who are you people?

We're coming home to visit relatives and we have things to do.

So we won't bother you further.

I take my leave.

Let's go.

We inspectors pay respect to Senior Clerk Yan and Great Chief Shen.

What happened back there?

[Inspector Sun Tan] I'm the leader of the inspectors in Gannandao.

We were merely trying to stall you for a second

to not cross paths with Ji Dafu.

We've been investigating a case of usury

and the clues led us to Ji Dafu.

This person is elusive.

To avoid alarming the suspect, we resorted to this strategy.

Please don't mind us.

It's alright.

It's just that you were conspicuous.

If someone observant noticed you, wouldn't you be exposed?

You're right, Senior Clerk Yan.

We were reckless back there.

We will be careful.

If it weren't for the token,

it wouldn't have crossed my mind that you were inspectors.

Token of our marshal.

Please don't. I don't deserve this.

Seeing the token is as good as seeing our marshal.

Mrs. Shen, rest assured.

Whenever you need us for anything,

we will certainly go all out to support you.

You just said that Ji Dafu was elusive.

Was it because you found something?

Ji Dafu appears to be a teahouse owner.

But he also runs an underground casino that is involved in usury.

A lot of money goes through his casino accounts

and gets circulated in suspicious ways.

Are you saying that Ji Dafu is very likely

gathering wealth for a mastermind

and laundering money through the casino?

This case is complicated.

We followed the leads

and found that many officials in Gannandao were involved.

So we had to count on ourselves.

If you wish to visit the underground casino,

you'd better disguise yourselves.

Do you remember it?

You're Sun Daniu.

- You're… - Liu Qingming.

I'm Wan Erge.

We are businessmen who came to do business in Gannandao.

I think you overlooked the key issue.

What is it?

We are going to a casino.

Which one of you is adept at gambling?

Naturally, that would be me.

I assure you I'll end up winning their deeds.

[Dafu Teahouse]

This way, please.

This way.

Wan Erge.

After you sit down,

wait for the waiter to serve the tea and give him a signal.

This way, please.

Someone will take you to the casino.

I'll be downstairs as a guard to assistant you when it's needed.

Place your bets.

Stop, gentlemen.

You look new here.

Big.

Hurry. Don't waste my time.

These gentlemen are looking for some fun.

Just take them in.

Alright. Understood.

Follow me.

Again.

Come on. Go on, come on.

Big or small?

- Big. - Excuse me.

Big!

Place the bets and have no regrets.

I won. It's all mine!

I won.

Big!

- Big! - Small!

Help out, will you?

Congratulations, everyone.

Again.

I'm betting on big.

- Big. - Place the bets.

How much are we betting today?

It's up to Wan Erge.

You'll play today.

What you win is yours. If you lose, it's on me.

Alright.

For the first round, fifty taels.

- Alright. - Big.

Ladies and gentlemen, place the bets.

Big or small? Place the bets.

Look closely.

Fifty taels, look closely.

Big.

Place the bets and have no regrets.

- Big. - Small.

Something's fishy, indeed.

One, two, two, five points, small.

Congratulations.

You're in bad luck today. Let Sun Daniu play.

I, Liu Qingming, am in bad luck today.

Daniu, it's your turn.

My belly… My belly hurts so much.

What's wrong with him?

Oh no. I need to go to the bathroom.

But still, I'll watch you play before I leave.

Wan Erge never plays small.

He always plays big.

That's right.

I wonder how much would you like to bet?

A thousand taels. One round to determine the winner.

A thousand?

What? A thousand taels?

Okay.

Such a large bet.

Shall we change the odds?

What about one-to-two?

No problem.

Have no regrets.

A thousand taels. I'm betting on big.

Open it.

What are you waiting for?

Open it.

Yeah.

Open it.

Yeah, what are you waiting for?

When I was losing money, you opened it instantly.

What now? It's such a large bet.

Shouldn't you hurry up?

Exactly.

Open it.

Open it.

What are you waiting for? Open it.

Yeah, open it.

Open it.

What's going on?

We've been waiting.

- I won! I won! - Impressive.

[Master of All Games] I won!

Gentlemen. You're so lucky today.

Why not take another bet when you're in luck?

Our boss wants to meet you in person.

No thanks. Tell your boss.

We've won enough for today.

Okay, I heard some distinguished guests have arrived today.

I, Ji Dafu, am the owner of this casino.

The bet doesn't matter that much.

What matters is to make friends.

I have prepared fine tea in the private room.

Please come upstairs to have some tea with me.

Alright, let's hurry then.

Liuniang.

Gentlemen, pleased to meet you.

Come on in.

After you.

What are you doing?

So reckless.

Don't scare my guests.

Sir, he's basically useless now. What do we do with him?

Why would we keep someone useless? Throw him out.

Understood.

He dares to win so much money in my casino.

Does he think he can walk away with the money?

It seems that the rumor of

the Half-faced Demon eating people's limbs originates from the casino.

The victims who had their limbs chopped off

dared not speak openly and claimed to have amnesia.

Please don't mind us.

My subordinates are clumsy and lack discernment.

I hope they didn't scare you.

You scared me. What happened to that guy's arm?

It was nothing. His arm was too fragile.

It broke with just a touch.

As far as I see,

you've won so much money at our casino.

That's improper, isn't it?

We won the money. It's not like we stole it.

How is it improper?

In that case, I won't waste my time with you.

You have two options.

You either bet one round against me,

and return the money you won,

or keep the money you won and leave one part of your body.

Your choice.

I won't choose from either option.

I want the money and my limbs.

So, there's nothing to talk about.

Sir, someone wants to see you.

I'm busy. Send them away.

Governor Mo is one of the visitors.

Keep a close eye on them.

Step back.

Great Chief.

- Take them away. - Understood. - Understood.

Let's go. Behave.

Hurry up.

Outrageous.

How dare they set up a casino under my nose and spread rumors?

I reviewed the case files and found out that Ji Dafu's wife Li Xiulian

was the victim of a vicious case done by a gang years ago.

It happened because her older brother Li Kaixiang was unable to pay the debt.

So most likely, Ji Dafu used the rumor of the Half-faced Demon

to kill Li Kaixiang to avenge his wife.

This is outrageous. Does Ji Dafu have any respect for the law?

I can't believe such a villain got away. Guards!

Things have gone too smoothly.

Pass down the order. Apprehend Ji Dafu throughout the city.

Understood.

Great Chief, Senior Clerk Yan, thank you for venturing into the casino today.

The case is solved because of you.

Rest well tonight. Leave the rest to me.

Trust me. I will certainly bring Ji Dafu to justice soon.

[Carrying the sunshine and auspicious energy]

Half-faced Demon.

He managed to get away.

Shen Du.

Kill me.

All the meridians in his limbs were severed and his face was skinned.

Only a repeated offender could do this in such a short time.

What's wrong? What happened?

Bi Qiu is bleeding out. I'm afraid he…

Bi Qiu, what happened?

Half-faced Demon. Is it the Half-faced Demon?

I swear I'll make you pay!

Why did you do this to my subordinate? Come at me!

Governor Mo, calm down first.

Did you see the murderer's face?

- Bi Qiu. What do you want to say? - Please.

Please.

End my suffering.

Shen Du.

End my suffering.

Thank you.

Bi Qiu, rest assured.

I will treat your family as my own.

Don't blame yourself.

You can never take out all the villains in the world.

That I know.

It's just that…

You can't bear to watch it with your own eyes.

So look away.
