In the dead of night, a sleeping family is
viciously attacked.

This is everybody's nightmare scenario.

Only one person escapes alive.

I was watching her.

She seemed extremely calm.

They just seemed like the perfect family.

Sometimes evil appears where you least
expect it.

How are you?

There are monsters.

And you could never tell where this killer
might strike next.

Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Steeped in history and tradition.

It's home to a thriving Amish community,
as well as picture-perfect neighborhoods.

Like Mannheim Township.

A place where doors are usually left
unlocked.

A lot of people would
regard that as the kind

of suburb that exemplifies
the American dream.

But on a Friday night in May, one family's
dream comes to a violent end.

At 2.30 a.m., the quiet is shattered by a
scream.

And sounds of a struggle inside a home on
Peach Lane.

Minutes later, 20-year-old
Maggie Haines bolts

from the house, waking
her neighbors, who call 911.

Lancaster police confront a grisly scene.

Two bloody corpses, side by side,
in the master bedroom.

And a teenage boy, sprawled lifeless in the
hallway, slashed and stabbed repeatedly.

This is everybody's nightmare scenario.

Defenseless at home, just
sleeping, and somebody sneaks

into your house with a knife
and stabs you in your bedroom.

When we first approached the house,
we didn't know if one person was involved

in the murders or if there were multiple
people.

There could have been a lookout.

There could have been a driver waiting
nearby.

We had no idea.

Police immediately call 25-year veteran
homicide detective Allen Leed.

They said, Al, there's been a triple
homicide and we need you for you to come in.

The victims are quickly identified as the
Haines family.

50-year-old Tom, dead from stab wounds to
the chest.

Next to him, his wife, 47-year-old Lisa,
also dead from multiple stab wounds.

And 16-year-old Kevin, their youngest
child and only son.

The most violent, the most vicious attack
was done to Kevin.

The teenager had been stabbed more than 50
times in his back, arms, and face,

and his throat slashed.

There is blood everywhere
on the walls and floor,

proof that he fought
back against his attacker.

It sticks with me to this day,
thinking about what happened to Kevin.

If there was a murder,
you'd just certainly obviously

prefer that it's a bullet to
the head and it's over quick.

And Kevin didn't die quickly.

The entire family wiped out, except for
one.

20-year-old Maggie Haines, who escaped
without a scratch.

She tells police she
got out of the house as

quickly as she could,
and never saw the killer.

Crime scene investigators comb every inch
of the house.

They don't find any fingerprints,
suggesting the killer wore gloves.

But they do find one key piece of
evidence.

The most important thing that we found at
the crime scene, there was a trail of

bloody shoe prints between some of the
bodies at the home.

Just looking at the shoe
tread impressions inside, I

knew that only one person
had walked through blood.

That's all I knew at that point.

Following those footprints, the
investigators determined that after

killing Kevin, the intruder went back to
Tom and Lisa's room.

The killer saw that Lisa
was still alive, so the killer

finished Lisa off with a
one final slash to the throat.

Next, detectives track the killer to the
second floor bathroom.

Under black light, a chemical called
luminol reveals traces of blood in the

sink, a chilling glimpse into the killer's
state of mind.

Imagine how cool you have to be
slaughtering these people and taking the

time to wash your hands and wash the knife
in their house before you run.

Since the family typically
left their doors unlocked,

the attacker could have
come in at any time.

What's unusual is that nothing seems to be
missing from the house.

This wasn't a burglary gone wrong.

It was a deliberate massacre.

In the daylight, another potentially
important clue surfaces behind their

house, a baseball cap with duct tape on
it.

When forensics reveal traces of blood and
hair on the hat, police know it's a

treasure trove of DNA and a chance to
quickly wrap up the case, if they can get

a match from the national database of
known criminal offenders.

But when test results come back,
there's no match.

The evidence is put in storage for future
testing against possible suspects.

I knew we had collected enough evidence
that could solidify charges against

somebody later, but we had no idea who
that would be.

Next, investigators start looking into the
background of the Haynes family.

Listen, I want you to do a background
check.

Was Tom possibly having an affair?

Was Lisa having an affair?

Did the family owe money?

Was the family involved in drugs?

Did they have gambling debts?

Were they involved in some kind of
unseemly or illicit activities?

But as they dig deeper,
police can find nothing out

of the ordinary in this
typical middle class family.

They just seemed like the perfect family.

Leave it to Beaver, Ward and June Cleaver.

That's the type of people they were.

I couldn't believe anyone wanted to hurt
such a nice family.

Be like killing happiness.

It just didn't make sense.

Tom Haynes was the branch manager of an
industrial supplies company.

His wife, Lisa, taught preschool at their
church.

All three of my kids went through the
preschool program, so I knew who she was

by sight and by name.

Maggie Haynes is a college sophomore.

She was academically very, very gifted,
and she was sweet and vivacious.

Last was Kevin, a shy 16-year-old with
just a couple of close friends.

He excelled at his school's quiz ball,
a high-level scholastic competition.

Kevin was a happy-go-lucky kind of guy.

Nothing really seemed to bother him.

Guess what I'm doing this summer?

The Haynes family seemed happiest just
spending time together.

Their idea of a great time was staying
home and reading and cooking supper

together, perhaps watching a movie,
and then 10, 11 o'clock into bed.

So who would want to slaughter this loving
family?

And why leave 20-year-old Maggie
untouched?

Police focused their attention on the
college student.

Why don't we begin by having you tell me
exactly what happened?

Well, I was asleep in my room.

Maggie goes to school at Bucknell University,
a hundred miles north of Lancaster.

She explains to investigators that she
arrived home for summer break,

the night before the murders.

This is a Friday night.

Maggie and Kevin went to a local mall to
buy Mother's Day cards for their mom, Lisa.

That evening after dinner, the family
watched a movie together.

Kevin and his mom went
to bed first, while Tom and

Maggie watched the end of
the Phillies baseball game.

Finally, father and daughter headed
upstairs.

Three hours later, Maggie claims she was
woken up by a loud noise.

It sounded to her like a scream.

She heard the sounds of physical struggle
from down the hallway.

She tells police the noise was coming from
her brother Kevin's room.

When she stepped into
the hall to investigate,

she was hit with the
overwhelming stench of blood.

Next, she claims
she ran to her parents'

bedroom, where a
horrifying sight awaited her.

Her father was lying absolutely still on
the bed, and her mom, Lisa, was sitting up

and it was in a state obviously of shock
and said, please, go for help, go for help.

Maggie says she sprinted
downstairs and outside, not

knowing what was happening
to the family she left behind.

Her story seems to fit
the facts, but what strikes

detectives as unusual is her
demeanor during the interview.

My father was lying in bed.

I didn't realize at the time that he was
already dead.

Maggie's response in
the immediate aftermath

of the tragedy was
quite frankly troubling.

I was watching her.

She seemed extremely calm.

The police had to consider whether Maggie
somehow knew more than she was letting on.

Was it perhaps a boyfriend of Maggie's from
college who had committed the killings?

She throws more fuel on the fire of their
suspicions when she ends her type

statement about the murders with five
striking words.

Her closing comment on her statement was,
and you know the rest.

It just seemed like a very
blase comment to make after

learning that your family
has been viciously murdered.

They must consider
the horrific possibility

that Maggie has
murdered her entire family.

Could she have done all this and then fled
out and created the scene and created the

theatrics that, hey, somebody just
murdered mine?

Absolutely she could have.

Coming up, could a dark secret have
triggered a deadly rage?

Why was somebody so viciously angry?

There had to be somebody that just hated
them.

In the quiet calm of Pennsylvania
Dutch country, the Haines

family was viciously murdered
while asleep in their beds.

The only survivor?

20-year-old Maggie Haines, who doesn't
have a scratch on her.

Investigators must now determine whether
Maggie was just lucky to escape the

tragedy or an active participant in the
crime.

You didn't have a robbery.

It was the only thing here.

People came in to kill.

Of course, she had survived, so it's like,
how does one person get out of the house?

Detectives know of countless
cases involving multiple

homicides, where the lone
survivor ends up being the killer.

This is especially true of family murders.

So the question is, how could Maggie not
have killed her family?

When Maggie appears unusually detached
during questioning, suspicions only grow.

It was the first thing you saw when you
came out of your bedroom.

I couldn't really see anything,
but I thought that I smelled blood.

It was a little odd that she wasn't
displaying more emotion.

And they called the police from there.

But the forensic evidence doesn't support
Maggie as a lone killer.

There were bloody footprints.

A man's size 13.

And when Maggie knocked
on the neighbor's door

for help, there wasn't
a trace of blood on her.

Still, no one was ready to rule her out as
a suspect just yet.

The other detectives
and the other officers

actually felt strongly
that she was involved.

Either not physically involved, but maybe
somebody, you know, coordinated this.

Police had to eliminate
the possibility that

Maggie hired someone
to commit the murders.

But no large withdrawals
appear on her bank records, and

a check of her phone logs
yields no suspicious calls.

We got into her background, and we got her
computers from everywhere, her laptop.

I mean, there was just nothing.

In countless interviews,
Maggie never deviates

from her original story
or betrays a hint of guilt.

Detectives eventually determine
that her strange call during

questioning was simply how
she coped with extreme stress.

People deal with loss a different way.

How are you supposed to react?

Your family's wiped out.

She got out that night, but
she carries the scars and

the loss with her, you
know, the rest of her life.

Still, a nagging fact remains.

For some reason, the killer
did not go after Maggie, who

was sound asleep just 10
feet away from the other victims.

Between the time you
called the police and their

arrival, did you see
anyone leaving the house?

I don't see anyone.

Could this mean the killer
knew Maggie and intentionally

spared her life while
targeting her loved ones?

To probe further,
investigators head to Maggie's

school, Bucknell University
in central Pennsylvania.

Perhaps there was some boyfriend working
in the shadows at Bucknell, or perhaps

even some crazed professor who might have
been responsible.

The team interviews
Maggie's friends and teachers,

including one professor with
whom she had worked closely.

Did you guys ever socialize off campus?

Nothing formal, maybe a hello,
how are you?

But after hours of interviews
and days of investigation,

the team runs into one
dead end after another.

Out of the 50 or 70 people that I
interviewed, nothing jumped out and came

to the top that said, hey, this is the
reason this might be the person.

Detectives turn to the private and
professional lives of Maggie's parents,

Tom and Lisa.

We were checking financial records,
computer records, employment records,

personal records.

As far as, you know, was somebody have a
vendetta against Mr. Hanes?

Did somebody have a vendetta against Mrs.
Hanes?

It just felt like it had to be somebody
that just hated them.

And we couldn't fathom that there would be
anybody in existence like that.

Diane Garber was a longtime colleague and
friend of Maggie's father, Tom.

Tom Hanes was a very warm, compassionate,
encouraging, uplifting, positive person.

He was respected by everyone that he knew.

But further questioning
reveals there was at least

one person who wasn't
such a big fan of Tom's.

We had an inside salesperson that we did
not feel was pulling his weight.

He was kind of taking advantage of every
chance he had not to do his job.

Bill, you got a moment?

Yeah, what's up, Tom?

Let's see.

Two weeks before he was murdered,
Tom Hanes confronted the man in his office.

This is ridiculous.

The conversation at one point generated
into a bit of a shouting message.

Here, this guy had an altercation with Mr.
Hanes.

When we went to talk to him, he wasn't
around.

And this was going for two or three days.

This guy, we don't know where he's at.

Eventually, the employee returned.

He'd been away visiting family and was
shaken by word of the murders.

On top of that, he's got a rock-solid
alibi.

That night, he was with his wife and other
friends.

They had gone out.

We had receipts.

We had video that confirmed that they were
there.

So it took him out of the picture.

Another potential suspect is eliminated.

Detectives now ask a different question.

Did anyone have a motive to kill Lisa
Hanes, Tom's wife?

Lisa was very soft-spoken, very quiet.

She didn't like to be in the limelight.

She just kind of liked to be in the
background, take care of her family.

They find nothing remotely negative about
the preschool teacher and devoted mother,

which leaves detectives with the last
victim, Kevin, Tom and Lisa's 16-year-old

son, who sustained far more horrific
injuries than either of his parents.

The question plaguing investigators is
why.

Did Kevin receive this
vicious attack because

he actually fought
with the perpetrator?

That's a factor.

But why was somebody so viciously angry
with Kevin?

When investigators go looking for answers
at Mannheim High School, they discover

that, much like his parents,
Kevin had a squeaky

clean reputation that no
one was willing to dispute.

Unlike many of his peers, who had begun
experimenting with illicit drugs,

Kevin was a model student with a brilliant
mind.

He was the star of his
school's quiz bowl team,

a shy, awkward kid with
a limited social circle.

He was one of the intellectual elite in
high school.

If Kevin wasn't absolutely the smartest
and the brightest, the most talented kid

in grade 10, he certainly ranked among the
top three or four.

Attempts to link Kevin to any unusual
outsiders at his school come up empty.

He spent nearly all
his spare time with two

close friends, Benjamin
Opp and Alec Kreider.

Detectives interview both Benjamin and
Alec, probing for secrets in Kevin's life

or for any potential enemies.

Not a single red flag goes up.

Detectives are at a complete impasse.

After chasing down a series
of promising leads, they still

can't make any sense of
this gruesome triple homicide.

When you're going to kill three people,
typically there's a motive behind it.

You have to have some
reason, and there was

no reason turning up
for any of these people.

With no suspects and
no arrest anywhere on the

horizon, fear and panic
hold Lancaster in a vice grid.

People were convinced that
a lunatic was on the loose, and

you could never tell where
this killer might strike next.

Coming up, two suspects suddenly appear on
police radar.

And no one can believe what turns up next.

This was a law enforcement tip.

They sounded credible, so we had to move
on.

Somewhere in the peaceful
landscape of Lancaster,

Pennsylvania, a vicious
killer is on the loose.

Nearly a week into the
investigation, police have

yet to uncover a solid
suspect in the savage murders.

Of Tom, Lisa, and Kevin Haynes.

They could not possibly dig up any dirt on
the Haynes family.

The Haynes family were squeaky clean as
advertised.

With no progress on the case, the entire
community is paralyzed with fear.

No one knew who had done it.

If the person was still out there,
you know, waiting to strike again.

Manheim Township had
always been a place where

people never even
bothered to lock their doors.

Now, security becomes everyone's
obsession.

I have friends who work for alarm
companies.

They said that their alarm business,
and this was several alarm companies,

increased 700% during this time period.

Investigators are
starting to believe they're

hunting the most
frightening of perpetrators.

A homicidal stranger.

I was just more and more convinced we had
a serial killer that had struck.

The team compares notes
on other home invasions

and reaches out to law
enforcement nationwide.

We notified all the police departments
throughout the United States, via police

communications and police computers,
and we just tried to give them a blanket

information with hope,
so maybe somebody in

another police department
has something similar.

They look at homicide cases across the
country that involve the same MO,

stabbing with a knife, and multiple
victims.

It turns out that in the last six months,
there were four such cases in New York

State alone, and one in Florida,
and another one in California.

Could there be a serial killer on the move
who had just struck in Pennsylvania?

The cross-country search intensifies when
a North Carolina highway patrol officer

pulls over a car on a routine traffic
stop.

They had stopped the vehicle, and the
vehicle was from Pennsylvania,

and the vehicle had two male occupants
that were en route to Florida.

The trooper is suspicious when he observes
several fresh cuts on the driver's hand.

He discovers bags of marijuana,
and worse, a hunting knife in the car.

Face forward, hands on your head.

It's enough to bring the two in for
questioning.

And during the interview,
the young men let slip

a confession that is
nothing short of a bombshell.

These two guys said, look, we just got
away with murder in Pennsylvania,

and they also said these
two guys, we also just

got away with a home
invasion in Pennsylvania.

Back in Lancaster,
the investigative team

believes they've finally
gotten their big break.

This was a law enforcement tip.

They sounded credible, so we had to move
on it.

The first thing Detective Allen Leade
wants to check is their shoes.

Based on the tread pattern, an FBI crime
lab has determined that the bloody

footprints left at the crime scene were
made by a type of hush puppy shoe.

The report back from North Carolina is not
encouraging.

He said that they were wearing sneakers,
which the sneakers pattern was not the

same pattern that we had, but they very
well could have changed shoes.

The cuts on the driver's hand
were explained away as the

result of a freak accident
while working at a saw mill.

The men also provide alibis for their
whereabouts on the night of May 12,

when the Haynes family was murdered.

Allen Leade has one last shot to connect
these two suspects to his case.

A baseball cap, investigators believe was
left behind by the killer in the Haynes

backyard, which contained DNA from hair
samples.

We had some DNA left at the scene.

We didn't know who it
belonged to, so we've

obtained a DNA sample
from these two gentlemen.

When their DNA doesn't match, the case
completely collapses.

Their false confession
about a home invasion

and murder was just
made up to look tough.

The elimination of these two from North
Carolina was very disappointing.

The excitement and anticipation of being
able to clear this crime quickly evaporated.

In the end, despite the nationwide hunt,
there's no evidence linking the massacre

of the Haynes family on Peach Lane to any
other known case.

Now, two weeks into the investigation,
police are no closer to finding the killer

of Tom, Lisa, and Kevin Haynes.

All they can do is follow up
on the avalanche of calls to

a tip line that are still
pouring in from the community.

Then one day, one of those random tips
gives investigators a lead from an

unexpected source, a probation officer at
a nearby juvenile detention center.

We have somebody who might be able to help
us out.

He said, Al, he says, I have a juvenile
here.

He's 17 years old.

He's telling us that one of his friends
got into a house in Mayheim Township a

couple weeks ago and took care of a family
as part of a gang initiation.

And the kid says, what do you mean you've
taken care of the family?

I've taken care of them.

That's all you need to know.

The details the teen gives about his friend
Hector's alleged crime are eerily familiar.

He went upstairs to
the parents' room and he

killed the father and
then he killed the mother.

He did the father first and then the
mother?

Exactly, in that order.

He said that he went down the hallway and
he started rifling through dresser drawers

where a boy was sleeping
and wound up killing the kid after

slashing him and gashing him
with a knife numerous times.

He knew some vital
information about the crime

scene that had basically
been kept confidential.

The kid knew that a dresser drawer in
Kevin's bedroom had been found open.

He also claims Hector showed him a blood
-stained knife the day after the murders.

It was incredible.

Oh my gosh.

That was the facts of our case.

Next, did the perfect family come up
against the perfect killer?

Whoever did this knew the neighborhood and
an escape road knocked out in advance.

After nearly three weeks, police think
they're finally on to the killer who

snuffed out the lives of the well-loved
Haynes family in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

He walked into the house with a knife.

Their new lead comes in the form of a 15
-year-old from Juvenile Hall named Angelo,

who tells police his friend Hector bragged
about the murders in disturbing detail.

The criminal investigators thought,
this kid might actually be the perpetrator.

This might be the person we're looking
for.

But will Hector repeat the grisly
confession?

Angelo agrees to wear a
concealed wire in the hopes

of getting his friend to
commit the story to tape.

How you feeling?

Nervous.

We were trying to get the
other boy to say something

about the Haynes case so
that we could pursue it further.

We'll do this.

What'd you do after Matt's party that
night?

They listened closely on the
wire for four days as Angelo

keeps bringing up the Haynes
family murders to Hector.

Have you told me about that guy's house
you broke into?

You know what I'm talking about.

No, I don't know what you're talking
about.

He would never bite, would
never say one solitary word

about this and very clearly
he knew nothing about it.

When their best lead goes down in flames,
it's a crushing disappointment.

Angelo had made the whole thing up.

It all been fabricated by this kid perhaps
because he thought it might afford him a

way out of juvenile detention but again it
was a false alarm that amounted to nothing.

We all had our hopes up high so we went
back to rock bottom again.

It was incredibly frustrating.

For the second time, a false confession
has wasted precious time.

Investigators are discouraged and there is
still a killer on the loose.

All the detectives put their personal
lives on hold.

They were working 18 to 20 hour days.

They were exhausting every possible angle.

It was a really impressive level of
dedication.

There were times where I would wake up in
the middle of the night not only thinking

about the case but, you know, having that
genuine concern for my family.

There was endless speculation.

There were so many rumors throughout the
course of the criminal investigation.

Neighbors were blaming one another
sometimes.

We could not find
even anything close to a

valid reason why the
Haynes family were victims.

Because of that, we had no suspects.

Maggie and questions continue to haunt the
seasoned detectives.

Why did the killer spare 20 year old
Maggie's life during his killing spree?

Why did the killer wear
gloves and clean off the

knife yet leave a trail
of bloody footprints?

And then there was the vicious
and personal nature of the

attack as if the perpetrator
knew the victims intimately.

Whoever did this obviously knew the layout
of the house.

They knew that the Hayneses kept their
doors unlocked.

Whoever did this knew the neighborhood and
an escape road mapped out in advance.

Just after midnight on June 7th,
Detective Alan Leeds' focus on the case

suddenly gets sidetracked.

Detective Leeds?

A police dispatcher informs him that a
local teenager is threatening suicide.

And it's not just any teenager.

I said, who is the kid?

And he said, Alec Crider.

The name Alec Crider
rang a bell only because

Alec Crider was Kevin
Haynes' very best friend.

Detective Leeds can see one of his worst
fears coming true.

Kevin's violent death was beginning to
take a toll on those closest to him.

I thought that this would happen with some
of Kevin's friends, only because this is a

horrible thing to happen, and then if
there's some issues going on inside

emotionally, this just may have been what
triggered it.

It's a tragic twist to an already horrific
case.

Kevin and Alec were thick as seas because
I would always see them together,

always talking.

After the murder, Alec
said, I don't know who

could have done
something so cold -hearted.

And he had tears in his eyes.

Almost four weeks after his friend's
murder, Alec is threatening to kill himself.

I have a gun.

What?

He's on the phone with Carolyn,
a girl he had just started dating.

He tells her that he has a loaded pistol
and wants to pull the trigger.

Yeah, if I can't see you, I'm going to
kill myself.

Keeping him on the phone, Carolyn slips a
note to her aunt, who alerts police.

Is he upstairs?

Not long after, Detective
Lee and other officers

successfully intervene to
stop the attempted suicide.

Lee reaches out to the despondent boy.

I said, Alec, why... what's going on?

Why do you want to harm yourself?

And he kept telling me
that this world's a terrible

place, that there's evil
people in this world.

And I agree with him.

And he says, look what happened to my best
friend.

He thought here was a kid
driven around the bend by the

murder of his best friend
and his best friend's parents.

With his mother's
consent, Alec is committed

to a psychiatric
facility for evaluation.

From there, he continues to write
passionate letters to his girlfriend.

In the meantime, Caroline's aunt had
contacted Alec's mother.

And the aunt had said, in
no uncertain terms, would

she permit Caroline to
have a relationship with Alec.

On Alec's parents' next visit,
they give their son the bad news,

worried about how he might react.

You just kind of stopped seeing her,
son.

You had to stop seeing her.

Alec took a deep sigh, then looked at his
parents and said, Mom and Dad,

you're going to have to step out for a
second.

What Alec said next, no one wanted to
believe.

I have something in my life to know.

Ellen and Kevin Haynes has run into one
dead end after another.

The tragedy even drove Kevin's best
friend, 16-year-old Alec Crider,

to the brink of suicide.

Now locked up in a psych ward,
Alec sits alone with his counselor,

having just banished his parents from the
session.

In a calm voice, he makes an unbelievable
statement.

Afterwards, the counselor
immediately calls Alec's parents

back into the room and tells
him to repeat what he said.

Mom, Dad, I killed the Haynes family.

No one knows what to make of this stunning
declaration.

I can't imagine the
trauma or the anxiety and

the anguish his parents
were going through.

Kevin was your best friend.

When I heard about this, I thought Alec
was doing this to get back at his parents.

And I guess probably they were hoping what
he was saying was not true.

But Alec's account is chillingly accurate.

He tells his parents that
he dressed in black clothes

and covered the logo on his
baseball cap with duct tape.

Then he headed to the Haynes home with a
flashlight and his hunting knife.

As a frequent guest at the house, Alec
knew the garage door was always left open.

He went upstairs and stabbed Tom Haynes
while he lay sleeping.

He moved on to Lisa,

then went down the hall for Kevin,
who fought back fiercely.

Her brother's screams jolted Maggie out of
a peaceful sleep.

She rushed into her parents' room to hear
her mother whisper her last words.

As Maggie fled the house, Alec finished
off his best friend.

Finally, he went back to Tom and Lisa's
room, where he found Lisa still alive.

So he delivered one last fatal blow.

Before leaving, he went to the upstairs
bathroom and washed the blood from his hands.

He thought he'd killed everyone in the
house.

But in a strange twist of
fate, Maggie was spared

because Alec had no idea
she'd come home from college.

If he had known, he would have gone after
her as well.

Alec's parents are devastated.

How could they believe that their very own
son could have done something like this?

But Alec assured them he says,
yes, I did it.

A quick search of Alec's home turns up a
damning piece of evidence.

A hunting knife streaked with dried blood.

Nearby, a pair of black gloves is soaked
with blood.

And most startling of all, the shoes that
Alec wore when he was admitted to the

psychiatric facility are black hush
puppies, size 13.

The tread from the shoe
and all their imperfections

matched exactly to the
tread patterns in blood.

And there was still blood in the seams and
on the tread.

The shoes, knife and
gloves found at the Crider

home are all sent to the
crime lab for DNA testing.

There, the grim truth is confirmed.

They were able to link up Kevin's DNA and
Alec's DNA on all these items.

Hidden in Alec's dresser, police find the
most disturbing evidence of all.

A journal entry, apparently written just
after the murders.

It says, Alexander was born on May 12th at
3.30, 2007.

He's now declared himself a new person.

He's embraced it.

He's empowered by it.

Now he's Alexander.

It's almost like he was proud that he was
able to pull off this horrendous deed and

that he was making a statement,
a closure, that he was completed.

On June 16th, 2007, Alec Crider is
arrested.

The community erupts with conflicting
emotions.

They didn't need to worry anymore that
there was a lunatic on the loose.

Worrying where this lunatic might next
pounce.

But on the other hand, it was very troubling
and disconcerting to the community.

This was a native son.

This was one of their own golden boys.

How could one of our good boys possibly do
this?

When I learned that Alec was a murderer,
I just said no.

Because that didn't make any sense to me.

His teachers loved Alec.

They thought the world of Alec.

And he fit in with his students.

He was the leader of that intellectual
pack.

The detectives on the case are equally
shell-shocked.

He fooled some very experienced
investigators.

And he would have fooled I think just
about anybody the way he came across.

He was smart.

He was calm.

And he was able to cover it up and go back
to his life.

In fact, his final exams were shortly
after this.

And from what I understand, he did
outstanding.

The burning question for the police is no
longer did Alec kill the Haynes family,

but why?

We like to have motives.

We like to know why somebody does
something.

That's the mentality of the occupation.

Why did he do this?

Alec never offers any motive for his
savage crime.

But after reading his journals,
it's clear to investigators he'd been

obsessed with the idea of killing for some
time.

He wrote, I never once believed that
killing out of cold blood was wrong.

In another journal entry, he writes,
I despise happy people.

I would love to kill happy people.

Did Alec view the Haynes as such a happy
family?

They made the perfect target?

What we're talking about here is a
fledgling serial killer.

We're talking about a
16-year-old academic

prodigy who was a
serial killer in the making.

The only motive was he's a killer,
and he has to kill.

And that's not something people want to
accept.

There are monsters, and Alec Kreider is
one of them.

Alec is declared mentally competent to
stand trial.

But as his day in court
approaches, he pleads guilty,

hoping his youth will
sway the judge's rulings.

But the brilliant teen is dead wrong.

The judge refuses to grant him leniency.

In a video statement to the judge,
Maggie Haynes, the only surviving member

of her family, finally reveals the
excruciating pain of her loss.

My world was shattered.

I miss him every moment of every day.

Kevin is my beloved little brother.

Even though the police have told me that
there was nothing I could have done to

prevent his death, I still feel a sense of
guilt that I should protect him.

Dad is what big sisters do.

I would have given anything for him to be
alive today instead of me.

Alec Kreider, the despicable individual,
he stabbed my family to death.

He has shown no remorse for his actions.

I never want him to be free from prison.

I need to make certain that he does not
have a chance to victimize anyone else.

In a heartbreaking
reversal of fate, the little

brother played the role of
protector of his big sister.

Kevin, in a way, saved
his sister because he fought

for his life and it gave her
an opportunity to get out.

Appalled by the
monstrous crime, the judge

gives Alec the maximum
sentence allowed by law.

Alec has no chance whatsoever of ever
being paroled, no chance whatsoever of

having his sentence commuted, not a ghost
of a chance.

Alec will die in prison in old man.

This boy could have been anybody's son,
anybody's brother, anybody's best friend.

We've all grown up with
somebody like Alec, but he

harbored some hidden
evil that nobody saw in time.
