Well, besides the obvious, the institutional racism

that limits and punishes all Black artists,

Marcus always put his family first.

He made extraordinary, consistent work,

but he didn't isolate himself from his family

or his community to do it.

He described his marriage

as a work of art.

He talked about his family being

his greatest accomplishment.

I think he understood

what so many of us struggle to,

and that is:

our time here is limited.

He reminds me not to waste another second.
