I feel like I should say
something about Roger

before we do our final movie.
-Yeah.

-You know, the very first movie
of this season

was our tribute to Roger Corman.

And, unfortunately,
Roger passed away in May.

He was 98 years old,

after a 71-year career
as a movie producer, director...

He did everything, he was known
to everyone in -- in Hollywood,

and he was especially
a good friend of this show,

of every show I've ever done.

And in 1982...

October of 1982,

I gave Roger this Joe Bob Briggs
Lifetime Achievement Award.

We stood on top
of the Gemini Drive-in,

in Dallas,

and I gave Roger
a lifetime achievement award,

and he kept this on his desk
for the next --what now?

I can't keep up
with all the dates,

but the next 40 years,

he kept this on his desk
as the king of the drive-in.

And so then when we did our
jamboree last year in October,

um, we had to --
Roger was there,

and we decided
we gotta give him

another lifetime
achievement award

'cause he's had
two lifetimes of -- of great --

of great movie making.

But we couldn't give him
another Chevy hubcap.

Everyone who gets
the lifetime achievement award

gets a Chevy hubcap.

We couldn't give him
another Chevy hubcap.

And so, you know,
he should get a Ferrari hubcap.

But we don't do foreign cars
at the American drive-in.

And so we decided
we'd give him a Cadillac hubcap.

And so when I gave him
the Cadillac hubcap,

he was just beaming with joy.

And he had brought --
he had brought this original

lifetime achievement award

because he wanted
to give it to me

as a lifetime achievement award.

So he wanted to give back
the one

that had been on his desk
all those years.

And I think, I think
Roger was kind of like, um,

winding up a lot of things
in his life.

And I'm very happy

that we could be with him
for the last --

we were the last big --
despite, despite the fact

that there were many tributes
to Roger over the years,

we were the last big tribute
before his death.

And so partly this, um,

Nightmareathon tonight
is a tribute to Roger.

And our first movie,
"Slumber Party Massacre,"

was a Roger Corman movie.

The movie we're about to watch,
"Galaxy of Terror,"

the last movie
in the Nightmareathon,

is a Roger Corman movie.

Um, I don't know what
to say other than that

he was a good friend.

He was a good colleague.
He was a great man.

And I rarely say
that about anybody.

[Breathing shakily]

But we're gonna have
a moment of silence

before I do the intro
to the last movie,

um, as our way
of honoring Roger.

Shouldn't do this after
working for all these hours.

[Chuckles] Um...

So, we'll have
a moment of silence,

and then we'll start,
um, "Galaxy of Terror."

And the only comments

I'm gonna make
about "Galaxy of Terror"

are pretty much the things
that relate to, uh, Roger.

Okay, that's enough
moment of silence.

Roger never liked wasting time.
[Laughter]

So, welcome back
to the final stretch

of Joe Bob's Nightmareathon,

and we are about to watch
a movie about fear.

Of course, every horror flick
aspires to induce fear,

but very few deal
with characters

who can't dare to be fearful
lest they be devoured by giant,

alien, flesh-eating worms
from another planet.

Roger Corman wanted to know

why the brain suckers
from outer space

were not mentioned anywhere

on the Chapman University
Annual Survey of American Fears,

and so he made a movie about it
called "Galaxy of Terror."

And actually, all Roger wanted
to do was produce

a commercially viable ripoff
of Ridley Scott's "Alien,"

because one year before
he had completed the biggest,

most expensive movie
he'd ever put his money behind.

Roger always used his own money.

But he made a movie called
"Battle Beyond the Stars,"

which was a "Star Wars" ripoff

that had moderate success
at the box office.

And this was during that period
when science fiction passed

from being a low-budget
exploitation genre

to becoming a huge-budget
summer blockbuster genre,

thanks mostly to George Lucas,

who created the American
"space opera"

in 1977 with "Star Wars,"

and Ridley Scott, who created

the hybrid
space movie/monster movie

with "Alien" in 1979.

So, when the big studios
got involved in sci-fi,

most exploitation filmmakers
folded their hand

and just walked away
from the table.

Not Roger.

Roger was intrigued by the fact

that these expensive
science fiction effects

were mostly achieved
with miniatures and small casts.

These were things
that anybody could do.

So he said, "I can do that."

And he started hiring people to
work in the visual effects areas

at the New World Pictures
studios

on Venice Boulevard in L.A.,
which was actually a lumberyard

that he had converted
into soundstages.

And he never changed the signs
or the look of it.

It still looked like
a lumberyard.

If you were driving
on Venice Boulevard,

it just looked like
there was a lumberyard there.

So, one of the people
who came to the lumberyard

to build miniatures
and create visual effects

on "Battle Beyond the Stars"

was 25-year-old James Cameron,
who was designing --

his job was
designing one-sheets

for ultra cheap movies --

movies even cheaper
than Roger's movies --

to make enough money
to pay his rent

and barely survive.

He was technically one of
the art directors, but he was --

he was the kind of guy
who would volunteer for jobs

before anybody else
could do them.

So he ended up doing --
he did matte paintings.

He did run-- he ran the camera
for visual effects.

Uh, he built
and ran a motion control unit.

He designed and built
most of the sets.

He built --
He was building models.

He was designing and building
a front projection system.

He became the operator
of that system.

All this stuff is
what you use in space movies.

But anyway, James Cameron was
skipping from one job to another

because he was the person
who understood

that outer-space movies were
all about trick photography.

And the main thing he designed

was the actual mothership
in that movie,

which looked like
two giant boobs.

You remember that mothership?
-Of course.

-Traveling through space.

Then after...

And actually,
that set up something

that has continued
to be used in movies since then,

which is if you look
at the spaceship designs

in many movies since then,

it's -- it's almost always
female body parts.

But anyway,
after "Battle Beyond the Stars,"

um, Roger Corman ended up
with a sort of...

He had built this sort of
low-budget visual effects studio

that could do everything
George Lucas could do,

but for a fraction of the cost.

And Roger was so impressed
with Cameron

that when he decided
to follow up

his "Star Wars" rip-off
with an "Alien" rip-off --

I shouldn't be calling 'em
rip-offs.

They were original stories.

They were homages --

-Homages. Yes.
-...to the new genres

that were created
by Lucas and Scott.

-You like calling 'em rip-offs?

-No, it's an homage.
-It's an homage. Okay.

Um, when he decided to follow up
and shoot "Galaxy of Terror,"

James Cameron was promoted
to second assistant director.

[Laughing] That was as high
as James Cameron could get

in the system.

And while they were making
the movie,

they promoted him
to first assistant director,

mainly because Roger knew
he would once again

wear about six different hats

and make all the miniatures work
and all that stuff.

The result is that
"Galaxy of Terror"

was filmed entirely inside that
lumberyard on Venice Boulevard.

I shouldn't tell you this,

'cause you're gonna be
watching the movie

and you're gonna be thinking
you go to outer space

and you go to this other planet,
and all this stuff happens.

They were -- it was all
there at the lumberyard.

When I first went to
New World Pictures,

a year later, all those sets
were still standing.

But especially recognizable
was that --

the control room
of the spaceship.

That would be used in movie
after movie after movie,

with only minor changes to it.

And to give you some idea
of just how economical Roger was

in planning these
extremely complex movies,

um, the control room was
partly made out of McDonald's

breakfast sandwich boxes
that had been fastened together

and painted over to look
like they were solid steel.

[Laughter]
So anyway, "Galaxy of Terror"

turned out to be
a combination of "Star Trek,"

"Star Wars," and "Alien,"

um, with emphasis on "Alien,"

because Roger realized that what
had really happened in 1979

is the outer-space movie had
merged with the monster movie,

and that would be the future
of sci-fi.

Lots of the themes
in "Galaxy of Terror"

were then used in the sequel
to "Alien" -- "Aliens."

And lots of the people
who worked on visual effects

at the lumberyard
on Venice Boulevard

also turned up on
the credits list for "Aliens,"

because James Cameron by then
was a director

and he directed "Aliens."

So he ripped off the rip-off

of the movie
he was doing a sequel for.

So, we had entered a new age.

And, uh, I've never
even asked you, Darcy --

are you a big
science fiction fan?

-I mean,
it's not my first choice.

I'm -- I'm way more
into hardcore horror,

but yeah, it's fun.
-Okay.

Well, this may be the main movie

to establish the now-common
sci-fi premise --

When you go to another planet,

you willbe attacked by
strange-looking weird creatures.

Uh, sometimes they're external,
sometimes they're internal,

but they're always there.

Um, I'm gonna go ahead
and start the movie, but, uh...

Dang, I'm now -- now I'm gonna
miss the Nightmareathon.

You know, I was getting tired,
but now I'm not tired anymore.

-I was thinking the same thing.

-I should be exhausted,
but I'm just getting started.

-Me, too. Let's go.
-Alright.

Let's play one more slumber
party game before we quit.

-What?! I've converted you.
-Alright.

Just don't bring back
that dang dancing Sky Bar.

That will not make me happy.

-I think you're safe from him.
But we still haven't played

light as a feather,
stiff as a board.

-Okay, we'll play that.
-Yeah!

-Um, so what we have here
is the sensitive story

of the crew
of the spaceship Quest,

sent by the Planet Master
of Xerxes

to another planet,
called Morganthus,

to find out what happened
to the crew of the Remus.

[Laughter]
-Yep.

-So, already you can see
we got way too much plot

getting in the way of the story.

You use fancy words
in these movies

to make people not look at
the sets too closely.

But even though the Quest has
advanced technology

that involves flicking
a bunch of levers

up and down repeatedly,
the ship crashes on Morganthus.

Um, we can tell
they're from a futuristic,

space-going culture
because they say things like,

"I'm getting a neg density
reading in the center well up."

So the crew decides to head over
to the wreckage of the Remus

to see
if there are any survivors.

There aren't.

Plus, one guy gets
his head clawed to death.

So they head back to the Quest
and the next thing they decide,

they need to go find
whatever pulled their ship down

and wander around
on the planet a little

and discover a giant
alien pyramid.

Then the commander gets
all his blood sucked out

by alien tentacles,

and a couple more of the crew
get murdered by space creatures.

So the survivors go back
to their ship,

and the next thing
the remaining crew decide

to head back to the pyramid.

I don't really know
why they do anything

that they do in this movie.

I don't remember
why they go back to the pyramid,

but they do go back
to the pyramid

so that more of them
can get killed

until it's down to two of them,

and it's finally time
for the big reveal.

Sure, we've seen it before,

but have we seen it with a
horny, giant alien space maggot?

I think not.

Let's take a look at
those drive-in totals.

We have 14 dead bodies,

four breasts, multiple beasts,

one crash landing,
corpse burning,

alien-mountain
rappelling,

one crystal shard
under the skin,

one maggot-infested arm,

one horny giant alien
space maggot,

one alien-tunnel slide,

one exploding head,

attempted strangulation,

one musical staircase
for no apparent reason,

arm rolls,

gratuitous control-panel
lever flicking,

gratuitous wandering
around an alien planet,

crystal
throwing-star fu,

space kung fu.

Drive-In Academy Award
nominations to Grace Zabriskie

as Captain Trantor,
the ship's traumatized pilot,

for saying,
"Hold on to your shorts --

we're gonna dump."
[Laughter]

Zalman King as Baelon,

the team leader
whose name is said so often

that if you took a drink
every time a character says it,

you'd be on the floor
before the movie's halfway over.

Erin Moran as Alluma, for being
the ship's claustrophobic empath

and for insisting,
"Baelon, I'm psi-sensitive.

The subtle energies do exist."

Sid Haig as the mostly mute
Quuhod,

for being Sid Haig

and for saying, "I live
and die by the crystals."

Robert Englund as Ranger,
for saying,

"I'm shredding myself
with my own bloody fingernails."

And Taaffe O'Connell as Dameia,

for her enormous talents

and for saying, "I hate worms."

Three stars.
Joe Bob says check it out.

This cast had a lot of people
who were later known for

other things,
like Robert Englund.

He wasn't Freddy Krueger yet,

because it would still be
two years

before Wes Craven
even started writing the script

for "A Nightmare on Elm Street,"
so that didn't even exist.

And Zalman King

is in this movie as Baelon --
-Yes!

-...who, he would become famous
for "Red Shoe Diaries."

-I love "Red Shoe Diaries."

-They call that
the first porn for women.

-Oh, that was not porn.
It was just like sexy stories.

-And a lot of nekkid bodies.

That's what it was.
-Definitely that, yes.

-Didn't take much nudity
in the '80s and '90s

for something
to be described as porn.

-True.
-But Roger always insisted

that there be a few breasts,
a few --

"above-the-waist nudity,"
he called it, uh, in his movies.

So, um, you know, just --

just the size of
Taaffe O'Connell's boobs.

Once you spring those babies
out of the chute,

that would cause people to say,
"Oh, she does porn."

the screenwriter can
come up with.

And so it would be good
to know exactly what

Americans are most fearful of,

lest we expose those fears
to outer space alien creatures

who then use their advantage
to feast on our intestines.

if you're afraid
of the spooky planet, you die.

that's what it is.

that if you carry emotional
fears throughout your whole life

and you don't conquer them,
then you die.

-That's a pretty universal one.

But, and probably went up
after COVID, you know.

"people I love becoming
seriously ill."

That's kind of the same thing.

Uh, American fear
number four --

The United States becoming
involved in another world war.

That is kind of heavy.

If you're draft age, I'm sure
that's probably number one.

You know?
American fear number three.

Russia using nuclear weapons.

That's --
That would, you know --

That would have been
the same in 1981 as it is today.

Uh, American fear number two --
economic collapse.

These are -- these are
kind of apocalyptic fears

that people have.
-I know.

These are not
what I was thinking.

-I think what that is,

if you go to the bank and
you can't get your money out.

But if people already have the
fear of not having any money,

then, you know,
this is sort of the same thing.

-I think I get it, it's
like your money is worthless

and that's a fear.
Every time prices go up,

people think their money
is disappearing.

because Chapman University,

that is not a fear.

The fear has got to be
something deeper than that.

Because fearing corrupt
government officials means

you fear what they
would be planning to do, right?

You're not fearing them.

What do you think these
corrupt government officials

are going to do, steal our money
or rig the highway contracts?

You know, it's way too general.

-Okay, so why did we do that?

-I couldn't resist!

You know, Chapman University
does a study every year

of what we're afraid of.

And I guess the lesson here is

if you think your mayor
is taking money under the table,

do not go
to the planet Morganthus.

-Good advice.

-Or a tentacle monster
will rip open your scalp.
