I'll have you know
that this movie comes out of

an international subgenre
called Evil Dead DIY.

Have you heard of that?

Normally when we talk about
influential horror films,

we focus on
"Night of the Living Dead,"

"Halloween," "Friday the 13th."

But internationally, the
most popular one is "Evil Dead."

And the reason is
the backstory is so good on it.

All those other films
were financed by guys

who had real 35mm equipment.

They had experience
making movies,

but "The Evil Dead" was
just three dudes from Detroit.

So fanboys in like
rural Germany say,

if three guys in Detroit
can do this,

four guys in Dresden
can do this,

and they make copies or homages
to "Evil Dead"

or rip offs of "Evil Dead,"

really, more
than any other movie.

This is the one
that people try to copy

when they're making
their first feature.

And it started just as soon
as "Evil Dead" was released.

You had "Frostbiter."
These are just in America.

You had "Winterbeast,"
you had "Savage Harvest."

"Demon Wind" is kind of one
of them.

You know, we had that on
the show. "Chill Factor."

In Italy, you had the seven
"La Casa" films.

In Germany,
you had "Black Past."

In New Zealand,
you had "Dead Alive."

-Yeah.
-Uh, in -- in China, you had,

um, "Chinese Ghost Story."

And also in Japan,
you had "Evil Dead Trap."

And they were all
extremely low budgets,

sometimes shot
on video fanboy projects,

and they would do their best
to get --

They would always get
the words evil dead

into any advertising
or promotion for their movie.

And so in 1995,

you had this phenomenon
in Japan called V cinema,

which was shot on video movies,

and you also had the beginnings
of what they call J-horror.

Um, there were three movies,
all with the title,

uh, "Scary True Stories,"

"Scary True Stories
one, two and three,"

and anthology films
that were shot on video.

And that started the
you-can-make-a-movie craze

in Japan,
and when Shinichi Fukazawa saw

"Army of Darkness"
in the theater,

he said, "That's it.
I'm making my own movie,

and I'm going to be
just like Bruce Campbell

and I'm going to kick the hyenas
of zombies in my movie."

And so the idea for
"Bloody Muscle

Body Builder in Hell"
was born.

And, um, Darcy, do you remember
where you were when

you first experienced "Bloody
Muscle Body Builder in Hell?"

-Why, yes, I do.
It was in my kitchen.

I had set it on
in the background

because I knew
we were doing the show.

-Okay. When was that?
-Like a week ago.

-Okay, well...
-We go way back.

-We all have our memories
of our first experience

watching "Bloody Muscle
Body Builder in Hell."

And you were in your kitchen?

-I was multitasking.
-Okay, but it's a classic.

-Why don't we introduce it
and then we will ask

the audience if it's a classic.

-Okay, good idea.

What we have here is
the sensitive story of Shinji,

who just wants to pump iron.

Only his former girlfriend

Mika ask him to take her
to a haunted house left to him

by his dad, Naoto,

because she wants to write a
story about haunted houses along

with a very somber paranormal
investigator named Mizuguchi.

What Shinji doesn't know is
that the house really is haunted

by his own father's ex,
because 30 years ago,

his dad's girlfriend
was trying to kill him,

so he had to stuff her
under the floorboards,

and she's still mad about it.

Once the three amateur
investigators get to the house,

Mizuguchi says
some bad energy dialogue,

and then a clock flies
off the wall and knocks him out.

But when he wakes up,

he wants to go back inside
and confront the ghost,

which makes the ghost happy

because she wants to kill him
and take over his body.

Fortunately, Shinji's dad
eventually appears on the TV

in the house [laughing] and
tells everybody what's going on

and that they will
need to use total dismemberment

to get rid of
the angry ghost zombie.

Sure, we've seen it before,

but have we seen it
with a severed head

that attaches itself to a foot
and a hand

so it can hop around
and headbutt people?

I think not.
And those Drive-In totals are

one ghostly girlfriend

from Hell,
one ghost photo,

one nail through the wrist,
wall clock to the cranium,

for no apparent reason,

neck biting,

exploding torso,
head rolls, eyeballs roll,

arms roll, hands roll,
legs roll,

feet roll, heart rolls,
gratuitous bicep curls,

gratuitous flexing,
dismembered head fu,

dismembered foot fu,
Dismembered hand fu, barbell fu.

Driving-In Academy Award
nominations for

Asako Nosaka as Mika

for not being afraid to punch
the ghost, and for explaining

that woman has mistaken you
for your father.

Masahiro Kai
as the psychic Mizuguchi,

who dismisses Shinji plan
to make the house

into his personal gym
by sneering, "What a good idea.

Training in a haunted house
sounds like a good hobby."

And to Shinichi --
Shinichi Fukazawa

who stars in a double role,

writes, directs, edits,
runs camera,

does the special effects,
for painting the walls red

and for saying "my weapon
is my muscles" and "groovy."

to feature postmortem kung fu
by a dismembered corpse.

any Asian horror,

then you know that that is
how the ghost approaches you.

He comes over your shoulder.

But now that the psychic
Mizuguchi is knocked out,

and that guy is grim.

uh, let's take a minute

and review
the production history

of "Bloody Muscle Body Builder
in Hell."

Shinichi Fukazawa got the idea
for the movie in 1995

when his father told
him he was planning

to demolish his old house
in Tokyo.

He had just seen
"Army of Darkness."

He was a huge fan
of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell,

and so he started writing
an Evil Dead DIY script

that he planned to shoot
on 16mm,

but he couldn't raise
the money for 16mm,

so he switched
to 8mm

giving us
that familiar fuzzy image

that we know so well
from classics

like "Things" and
"Sledgehammer."

And the problem with 8mm
millimeter is there's no way

to review the film's
progress while you're working.

So he shot most of the movie
only to discover

that the photography was no good
and he had to start over.

-Aww.
-Now even more broke

than he was the first time,
he started working weekends

and whenever he could
put together a cast and a crew.

And it took seven years
to recreate that footage

that he'd already shot.

-Oh, no.
-But he was still broke.

So it took another seven years
to process the footage

to digitize it for DVD release,
to edit it, to add effects.

So he finally had what
he considered the finished film

in 2010,
but nobody wanted to release it.

So he self-released it
on DVD in 2012

and it sold out immediately.

-Well, how many DVDs?

-I don't know how many DVDs.

-Oh.
Well, sold out immediately

doesn't mean a lot
if they only made 30 DVDs.

-Well,
I'm sure it was more than 30,

but, you know...
-Like, 35?

-Well, at least -- probably
at least 50.

-Alright.
-But at any rate,

the movie finally got
its official release in theaters

in 2014, but only in Japan.

And then an international
DVD came out in London in 2017.

And then the film finally got

its American release on DVD
in 2022.

This means the guy worked
on this movie

for 17 years just to make it,

and then 10 more years
just to market it.

So it's based on an '80s movie.

It's conceived in the '90s,
it's completed in the teens.

It finally sold
into all territories

of the world in the '20s.

So I actually think
that's commendable.

-I agree,
it's super commendable.

-Commendable
that he never gave up.

-Right,
he kept on rolling.

-Yeah, he did.
Back to the movie.

[Laughter]

The problem for a filmmaker

who needs 27 years
to get his work to the fans,

is that it limits how many films
you can make in a lifetime.

-Yeah, but the Japanese
are known for, like,

living a really long time.

-It's true, they're
the third longest lived people

in the world, but behind,
um, Hong Kong and Macau?

So 85 1/2 years is
the average life expectancy

if you live in Japan.

-Wow. Do they know why?
-Yeah, they eat a lot of fish.

Fish.
Fish is the answer.

-That can't be
the only reason.

No, it's fish, it is.
That's why --

that's why you should always
take your fish oil every day.

And oh, wait, you can't.
You're vegan.

-Yeah, no animal
products please.

I don't think they kill
the fish to get the oil out.

-Of course they do.
-Let's say they don't.

You know, because I take
that stuff every day.

They don't kill the fish.

-Oh, my God, you're right.

They just take a tiny
little exacto knife

and make an incision.

Gently scrape
out the omega three fatty acids,

and then they -- they sew
the little fishy back up

and release them back
in the wild.

-Okay, Darcy.

-That's why you have
so many herrings swimming around

with surgical scars.

-You can be so sarcastic
when I'm wrong.

the Laughing demon girlfriend.

And you know Shinichi Fukazawa

as the bodybuilder
is trying really hard

to look like Bruce Campbell
in "Evil Dead."

He's got the exact denim shirt
and the whole wardrobe,

but if I was going to pick
an actor,

I would say looks more
like a skinny Martin Sheen.

And, you know,

I was trying to think of
another movie that is written,

directed, edited, acted, special
effects done by the same person.

And I did think of one,
and it's also from Japan

and it's one of our most
hated films

here at "The Last Drive-In."
-Oh.

-People still write in

"Tetsuo: The Iron Man."

I think he must have gotten
that from "Basket Case."

He has elements of "Hellraiser,"
"The Thing,"

"The Incredible Hulk" when
he busts out of his clothes.

"Return of the Living Dead,"
"The Skull Man,"

and of course, "Evil Dead."

Also, I thought
the psychic was very reminiscent

of Roddy McDowall
in "The Legend of Hell House,"

which was a very popular movie
in Japan.

The question you may be asking
though is,

if his big turning
point is the discovery

that his muscles are
his greatest weapon.

Where are they?

You know,
he falls quite a bit short

of being
a professional bodybuilder.

And the reason may be
he was so overworked

and he got so little sleep
while working on the film

that he lost 27 pounds

right before
he started shooting his scenes.

explain the difference

in "Gas Pump Girls" movies,

there's only one
"Gas Pump Girls."

There can be only one
"Gas Pump Girls,"

and that's the 1979 flick
starring Kirsten Baker

and Huntz Hall
that was filmed in Sacramento.

And I believe we have
a photo here somewhere, uh,

of the actual service station.

It's still in business today,

but if you're talking about
all the great softcore TNA

drive-in movies of that era,
I would recommend

"Beach House, "Spring Break,"

"Losing It," "Zombeavers,"

uh, "Return of the Living Dead."

Uh, TNA was kind of
a crossover with horror.

Uh, "Squeeze Play,"
and that was the first film

that made money for Troma.

Uh, "Hard Bodies,"
"Private Lessons."

There were so many I'm sure I'm
leaving out a lot of good ones,

but Darcy and I
were talking recently about

why they're not making
those anymore.

need to bring it back.
