Shaolin was not only a temple, but the
home of Chinese kung fu, and as
such, revered throughout the nation.
When the temple was originally founded,It
was located in Henan Province. It was
moved during the early part of the Qing
dynasty and became the focal point for
the anti-Manchu movement. Young
men, angered by the repressive and
corrupt government of the Qings, came to
Shaolin to study and to learn the
complex kung fu methods which were taught
there. Their training was rigorous and
founded on the Buddhist precept of
subordination of the flesh to the spirit.
The central figure in the temple was the
abbot, himself a master kung fu expert
and the repository of the martial arts
secrets handed down from one generation
to the next. Then came the Qing Emperor
Yong Chen. He persecuted the Shaolin
disciples and killed them whenever he
could, until his name became a byword for
murder or suppression. The Emperor became
obsessed with the idea that the Shaolin
rebels would one day overturn the Qing
government. His army was continuously on
the alert for any signs of rebellion.
which they crushed with brutalefficiency.
Your Royal Highness, your loyal General
Fung respectfully craves your attention.
Oh?We hear the Shaolin rebels are
planning a revolution. It's expected to
start soon. We think they're in
league with the Liu family. If this is
the case, then it could be dangerous.
Talin scum, is there no end to the damned
importunents?Your Royal
Highness, we've had some reports that in
recent weeks,A great many
strangers have arrived here in town,
and from all accounts, must be spies.
They're salmoners. Most of them are
tattooed with the emblem of a striking
dragon. This is the sign of the Shaolin
rebels. Levi! My lord! You shall take
out an odd party, a hundred and
twenty soldiers, and your orders
are to wipe out the Louis Clan!
Who's there?
An assassin, go and get him. Sir, hold
it! Oh, you then.
Highness, I bring apologies
from the Liu's. Sister, are you crazy?
If I was really your sister, then my
family wouldn't be in danger now.
Highness, you're too ruthless.
Sister, very complicated matter.
Extremely. You must accept
that. I think it's best for
all of us if I lay pay here in camp
to discuss this thing. Then...
All of us sit down here and maybe
work out something. No good. Pei and
Cam wouldn't listen to you. Just what do
you want here?
I don't want to kill you, so you keep out
of this. Sister...
I don't want you dead. That's what you
say. And maybe you don't. But my family,
you want them dead. But that isn't true!
Stop denying it. Everyone knows. You
ordered my whole family be killed. To be
wiped out without a trace. You.
You're a butcher! You?I came here with
one purpose. That's to tell you something
straight. From now on, we're no longer
classmates. We're mortal enemies now.
Go get 'em!
Child. There's
nothing we can do now. You
are only a girl. And how can one single
girl hope to fight the Emperor?Ma.
But something must be done. He is
determined to kill us. So
what I must do is kill him first.
You're all that I've got left now. And
if you were to be caught, what would I do?
Ma.
Ma, maybe I won't try it then.
Highness, since you want to forget
that we were once classmates, from now
on, it'll be a fight to the death.
Say you're still here.
I suppose. You're here to arrest me. Or
just you try it. Better come
quietly. We have our orders from the
Emperor. You better obey.
Or else. Or else, I might
kill the whole lot of you. Right.
Tell me, why die for the man's
shoes?That little cut is
a taste. Just a touch.
The next step is to remove your head.
You bitch Well, all right.
decapitation coming up. Huh
You! I'm very sorry. Stupid
fool! Please forgive me. Just get out
of my sight now! Yes, my lord.
My lord, now you shouldn't get so mad.
Come, and I'll sing for you now.
Pull it. Phew. You're still
after my family in spite of what you
said, so I have to kill you.
Get back! I'll kill you! I don't want
you. I came for the emperor. You've
broken into the palace, so you'll die.
All right. Stand back. Sorry. Sir!
Well now, sister. You think that you
fight so good, then?Well, let's see. All
right, then. Hut! Hut!
All
right. So you've escaped me, but I'll get
you. You're just wasting your time.
Your sword is never going to touch me.
You're wrong. For the next time, I shall
kill you.
Hey!
The king is ruthless. And clever
as well. I'll grant him that.
Mr. Liu, your sword will never be a match
for that man. You may as well give up.
Chief Abbott, that man's my enemy.
I swear that one day, I shall
kill him. Even if I die. But the king is
a first-class fighter, and that's for
certain. I ought to
know. I helped train him.
He trained right here at Shaolin Temple.
He enrolled with a false name, and
no one suspected that he was a royal
prince in line for the throne.
I've always said that that
mistake was my greatest.
Chief Abbot,You mustn't blame yourself.
Right now, all your skill is needed
to help us organize things. Someone has
to plan things. Throw out those man
shoes. Well, I have sworn an oath to God.
And when I mean to keep, as soon as we
get rid of this emperor, I'll hang up my
sword forever. Well, he said to wear a
special coat, and it's sword-proof.
So then, whatever we
plan will have to be good. Do you have
anything in mind?I do. Distract
the man. You use a sword,
but in addition, you carry a small
dagger. A small
dagger?Right. You get in
close and cut his throat.
I came here when I was just four.
I've been here for 32 years. I've
never been outside once. Hey,
brother, they all say you've long been
good enough to graduate, so why don't you?
And where
would I go to?I've no family.
Ah Hey, Brother Chen,
tell me, why'd you come here?Me?
Some bandits killed my parents, and
so I was brought here. Hey,
why didn't they kill you?Me?
I see. You already knew how to fight.
Now, don't kid him. What about you?Why
are you here?Me?All
my family were patriots. HuhAnd
what does that mean?EhMy granddad?
Well, he was a well-known general. And my
dad was a brave and famous officer.
Me?Go on.
HuhDon't worry. One day,I'll be
the most famous of all.
You'll be the most famous bragger. All
right now. Hey, where did you come?
I just turned 15. Was nearly too old.
Only just made it. Almost turned
me down. No, that wasn't his
age. There were other reasons. Ohh
What reasons?Well, when he came
here,He liked meat and liked wine.
He even was married and had a baby.
No wonder they didn't want him. You! Hey,
listen. Now you'd better watch that
tongue of yours. All right, that's
enough. Now, Chan, it's your turn now.
Hey, come on. How did you come to Shaolin?
Me?You see, my
grandma brought me. The Manchus were
after us. I was only three.
And she kept going. I don't know whether
she's alive or dead. It's the same
with me. That's just how I came here.
And one day, I'm going to get my revenge
on that General Jim.
Well, any day now, the Manchus will come
here after us. What?Never
fight! Right!
General Yim pays his respects, sir. Long
live, long live, long live the king.
General?Yes, my lord. They say
Shaolin School supports the eight
swordsmen. And what's more, they're
intensifying their exercises.
So, what you going to do?There's
something else. That woman, Miss Liu,
she's been to Shaolin for help, I know.
We cannot let Shaolin exist. It's time we
moved. I think that we must wipe them all
out. I await your orders, my lord.
Well, take a thousand troops up there.
Take the cannon also.
Manchus.
Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry,
move it.
Master, master, master, trouble.
What's the matter? It's the Manchus. There
must be a thousand of them. HuhWhat's
more, they've got cannon, too. Are you
quite sure?I saw them from the lookouts.
They're here, a whole army!
Fire! Fire!
Fire!
What's going
on here?You know. You must
be the man too, huhWhat do we do?Where
are you going?
So it's come. The Manchus have
finally attacked. They've come
in strength to their cannon.
They've not just come here to kill us,
but to wipe us all out. Abbott,
we'll have to decide what to do. Please
advise us. What are our
choices?
If so wish, I will advise,
but you must make up your own minds.
I will not decide alone. You have
three choices, it seems to me.
Advise us.
Firstly, you can run.
Take the bronze men and use the side
exit. Those bronze men were built by our
founders. They're almost sacred.
They couldn't be dismantled quickly,
either. That would take quite a while.
Besides, we'd never make it. The Manchus
are found to be watching Van Dukai to get
it through. It would just be committing
suicide. Second,
there is the tunnel that comes out a mile
away. It is narrow.
But I'm sure the Manchus don't know that
it exists. I think we ought to go down
there now and quickly. That's no use.
Because the tunnel was long ago blocked
with a rock. It was meant to stop
deserters. And it does that.
Our rules say it can't be used, and the
rule cannot be lightly broken.
Besides, it's narrow, just wide enough
for one man. The rock there is very
heavy. No one could lift that,
except me. Any other person
couldn't even budget, and I certainly
haven't any intention of moving that rock
now. Well now,
that's that.
All we can do is pray for Buddha's help.
If he's merciful, he may help,
because if he doesn't help us, we shall
all be dead.
Father-in-chief, shall we start the
firing again? It's been an hour now.
Your honor, sir. Start firing, sir.
All students. I've decided.
In view of our situation, you're all
allowed to fight the bronze men. It's up
to you.
Now listen. Jung's a tyrant. He must
die. What's happened here has to be
avenged. Staying here will do no good.
So let's all fight the bronze men and
then get out. Well, all right. Who's
coming?I am! I am I am I
amMaster, we will.
We'll go. We want to fight the bronze
men. If we get out, we'll make for
Peking and try to kill Jung. Right. Try
it. Remember, those bronze
men are quite merciless, so be
careful. Sir! Sir! Sir!
Brothers, come on, let's go! Sir!
Right!
We want to go in.
All right. In you go. Brothers, one at a
time. Listen, get him started. Right,
come on. Come on, quick, move. Hurry.
Hurry. Come on, get him, guys. Quick,
hurry.
Watch both sides. Right.
Master! Master! The library!Oh,
my God. What about the library? It's on
fire, sir. No hope of saving it.
We sold some books, as many as we could.
A-about 20,000.
Abbott! Chief Abbott, the
main hall's been hit. About 1000 men were
in their prey. They were burned to death.
Open your eyes. See what's happening.
How many have died here, simply because
you couldn't bring yourself to break the
rules. Because you wouldn't lift that
rock, the one that's blocking the tunnel.
Doesn't it bother your conscience just a
little to see these young men die?I
tell you, you may think you're a patriot,
but you're not though. The harm that
you've caused makes you a traitor.
You have betrayed your own people. You've
misinterpreted the rules.
The rules are good, but you've
misused them.
I know you're right.
I've been a fool.
Gather all the remaining students. Ta!
Brother.
Come on. Hurry. Come on. Let's go. Come
on.
Hurry. Hey, where y'all going? We're going
with the Albert. Come on.
Elder Monk. Elder Monk.
Hurry up. You must go now.
What?Go.
I shall die here in Shaolin.
You should survive, and they'd get
revenge. I mean,
why must you sacrifice yourself?Go on.
Leave me now and help the injured escape.
Shaolin's future depends on them.
Go on. Hurry up!
But sir... Go on now! God
bless you.
Go on and help the engine. Go on, hurry.
It's on. I told you, Sir.
Come on. Give
me one. Yeah.
Get in, sir. Come on.
It's even narrower than I thought. It's
still blocked. I'd better start. It
won't be easy.
When I've lifted it up,
you tell the men to crawl between my
legs. Sir.
Chief Abbott, think you can lift it
by yourself?I
will soon see.
Hold them in. Get them moving. Come on.
Quickly. Hurry up. Hurry up now.
Come on. Come onOkay, come on. Wait.
Move. Follow me. Hurry up now. Okay,
we're moving. Come on.
Wait.
Right in the rocks moving.
Tell them to get through as quick as they
can. Quick.
Sir. Master, uh-- Hurry!
One, two, three,
four... Five,
six, seven... Yeah.
Come on.
You may pass. Thank you, man.
34,
35, 36,
47, 38, 39,
40, 41,
42, 43,
44. Down!
You may pass. Thank you, sir.
Brother, I'll get out so he. Right. Okay!
Let's
go! Come with me. Fight the bronze
banner. All right, come on.
Let me. I'll go. Right.
Hold it. You two men are both injured,
so even if you pass this one, what about
the next test?Better go back.
Huh
Listen, he's right.
Better go back. Brother, we... Go on
back. All right.
Good.
66, 65,
66.
Teacher.
Hurry up. Yes, teacher. Quick. Yes,
sir.
Seven, 68.
Chief Abbott, who now has the
18 lessons of the Great Lord Border?
It's important they're preserved.
I must go. Would
bless you.
Chief Abbott, that was the last.
They've all got through.
Tell me, how many escaped?
98.
I'll wait a while.
In case there's still more
left. Ohh Chief
Abbott! There's
still more left! Chief Abbott, that's the
lot!
You may pass. Thank you, Master.
Brother! What is it?
Where's Master?Hello.
He's down in the tunnel. HuhHe lifted the
rock?Killed
himself. Huh
Master! Master!
Hey, wait!
I... I..
I..
Stalia... Groves, I'll enjoy the
others. Master,
you know how much I've always believed in
Shaolin?If you won't leave,
then grant my request. Don't make
me go. Please, let me stay here with
you, master. Be quiet. I
still have use for you in my
right sleeve. Take it.
Sir.
HuhMaster, huhWhat is it?
Listen. The secret you shall
learn. 18 lessons,
my Lord Buddha. Huh
The Lord Buddha's lessons?
You must use them. Go
now. Find the other men.
And then combine your skills.
We built Shaolin Temple.
Master, but the manuscript?You
must read it and memorize
it all well. You
see, it's important.
Many, many people
would want it, be ready to
steal it, so you must tell no
one.
Because if it were to become known that
you had the manuscript, well
then, it would be one
long bloody fight to try to keep
it. Yes, I'll remember.
All right. When you've memorized
it, you must destroy it at once,
and then go on to seek
revenge. Take some good
men,Kill
that you sir now then
when the temple is rebuilt
You make a new manuscript
And place the new manuscript in the
temple shrine So
that it'll live on
That's how it's always been since
Shaolin began sir,
I'll do that goodHey,
go now.
Master!
Master! Master!
Master! Master!
Let's finish off the Shaolin, Rebels.
Ready?Judge!
Hurry up!
These rebels, they don't care about their
lives. Come!
Quick, take a look inside. Come on,
come onHurry. Right. Come on. OK,
we're coming. Oh, my God.
My lord, come this side.
Your Highness! General Yin to see you!
Your Highness, do you wish to receive
General Yin, sir?Yes. Sir!
Call General Yin to attend upon His
Royal Highness now!
Please!
General Yim reporting. Your servant.
Get up. Thank you, sir.
Your Royal Highness, your men have
successfully invaded Shaolin Temple.
It's destroyed. Nothing remains, as per
orders. Did anyone escape?
Your Highness,I counted all the
corpses. I think a few may have escaped.
How was that?Through a tunnel underground
and no one knew about it. And at a
rough estimate, about 70 may have
escaped. General, Sir,
now you hear this. I want those rebels
caught. And if they're not caught,
then your head will roll.
Sir.
Now listen to me. We shall stay here
for a few days. I hope that it's not for
too long. We will post
guards, two at a time. We'll take
turns, and nobody at all
may leave the camp here
unless they ask for permission.
And they have a good reason. Now do you
all understand that clearly?Sir!Brothers!
Brothers! Brothers! What is it?
It's trouble. A Ching Patrol is on its
way. Where now?How many?Quite a lot.
What is it?Brother, the Chings are here.
What, the Chings?What's the matter?What
is it?The Chings, the Chings. Brother,
the Chings are coming here. Get all your
things. We're leaving now. Right, sir.
Hurry up. Yes, we'll hold them back.
Right. RightNow hold it. Don't go.
We're wasting time. Come on, hurry up.
Hurry up. Quick, okay, sir. Come on.
Quick! All right, hurry.
Quick, quick!
Quick, search! Search!
Quick, quick!
We found that tract. Seems to be heading
towards the south. Right, go!
All
right. You want to die?General,
you're the one who'll die. Yeah?You men,
get 'em!
Teacher, this is it.
Ahsoi. Yes, sir?How did you come to
find this place here?I found it when I
was gathering some wood once. As far as
you know. Anyone else use this place?
No, I don't think so. Well, at least,
sir, I've never seen anyone near the
place. Good. In that case,
we'll stay here for a few days.
Hey! Hey
I hear the Emperor is visiting here here
at Hang Chow. Seems to me
it's a good chance.
Maybe it is, if it's the truth. But how
do you know?I... It was some
soldiers. I heard them talking. It sounds
good. What do you think?Well, that's
easy. So let's all go to Hang Chow. You
may die, but then... Listen,
does it really matter?
I mean, the way things are, I'll
go. Anyone coming with me?
Brother, I'll go.
Brother, I'll go.
Brother, I'll go. Good. Listen,
I'm not scared. Even so,
we're going to need a really good plan,
or we shall all die.
Shaolin still needs us. Let's not waste
our lives. We're just 22 men,
and we're not all experts. Only about six
are really any good. Our lives are
unimportant. But Shaolin
must go on, so it must be rebuilt.
Listen, I agree with what you say,
but the king must die. So then, make for
Hangchao. Maybe with some luck, we'll
make it. All right,
then we'll go to Hangchao. Good. That
proves you're real Shaolin men, and I'll
pray hard for your success. Thank you,
Gigi! Hey,
hey look, so pretty.
Ohh My lord, just look at those fish.
That swine really enjoys life. Just wait
till I get him.
Brother, I've just seen the king. He's
at the Mold Terrace. Huh
But he's there, though, by the lake. Huh
My lord, just look over here. My
lord, are the flowers as pretty as we are?
We were split up, attacking four groups.
Right. All right, we want to take his
head.
Your Highness, it appears there are about
ten of them here, and our planters work
perfectly.
This time, we'll get them all.
Ohh Johannes, I move my man up. That's a
hundred armored guards.
Hey, you swine?I'm gonna kill you.
I think you should retire.
Listen! The
King's moment to ourselves! Let's go get
him!
ah
We can't do it!
What is all this? What the hell's going on
here?
So you came here to kill the Emperor?
Well, then, isn't that why you came?
Who's the real one?Everyone is real,
though. Except the fake one. My
God, I just don't believe this. The king.
Which one is he?Not to you. You can take
your thing. We've got five kings here. Huh
You silly man...
You... You love me rather than killing
you...
Uh, yeah man! I saved Ranvik! Ahh! Trump!
Devil I knew Ranvik!
Put up your swords. I came here to talk.
Who are you?You don't know me, General.
But my father was a soldier. A general,
too, of the Chings. Oh. Secretly, he
had me enrolled at Shaolin School ten
years ago to spy on all the rebel
fighters there. Oh.
Well, what news are you now?
After your men burned down the temple,
about 40 fighters escaped. Right now.
They're hiding in a secret cave. Oh,
where?Here. It's
a cave! A cave! A
cave! Teacher! Teacher!
A cave! A cave!
It was all a trap. They were waiting
there. We had no chance. Ah
So what happened?Brother Chan, he killed
an imposter. And the other brothers?
Brother Long, Brother Ying, they had bad
wounds. And Brother Fung...
I just don't know. I think they must have
got him. I should never
have let you men go there. But
Vulture, we'd have made it. We
nearly did. But then
they had these armored men.
Even so, our men fought
very bravely.
Listen, us out here wasn't the
best, but still, the others were wounded
or killed. Only he got back here.
Teacher, doesn't it seem a bit strange?
I agree. It's very suspicious.
Hmm
All right.
You'd better talk now. If you don't and
we beat you some more, you'll be dead.
Tell me. You're one of the damn chings,
aren't you?Teacher, I'm not a ching.
I swear it. HuhSo you're still laying,
huh
Enough. Listen, teacher, I was
brought up here. You ought to know that.
I mean, you helped to bring me up. I
am aware of that. When the abbot was
about to die, he said to me,
You have a mission to rebuild
Shaolin. And after that,
kill the king. Those were his last words.
So how could I... So how could I
betray him?Teacher, believe me.
I'll do it. I shall kill that
monstrous tyrant. Well, that's what you
may say. You had better repent your
sins.
Amen gets her sleep. Sir!
Ah
Teacher. Brother, you're back.
Teacher, I didn't make it. Didn't kill
him. Those armored gods. It's all right.
Come, you lie down.
What's been happening?What did he
do?
Well,I think he's a chief
spy.
What's
wrong?Uh, chief,
you're back. Yeah,
we failed. We...
we're beaten.
Right.
get up. What's wrong?Great. Come on.
Yeah. Hurry. Come on. Hurry.
Come on.
Teacher. What's the matter now?That
Fongi's a Qing spy. How do you know?We
secretly followed him. We all saw him
talking to a Qing official, so he's
definitely a spy. That traitor.
He was in Shaolin for 10 years. Right.
Better move out. Not safe here now.
Sir! Quick, come on. Turn our skew down.
Right, yes, sir, sir.
Here we are. This is the
city gate. And that one's going to
be our first obstacle. And this is the
royal quarter. Getting in will be tough,
too. It's always guarded and heavily,
so we'll just have to fight our way in
here. I expect that
at this point,We may well lose some of
our men, but that can't be helped. That's
how it is. And then we make to the
palace. And in there, there'll be some of
those units. They're tough. I know
that. We all do. It's going to be real
hard, but we must try, or else we shall
never kill that tyrant and avenge our
brothers. Listen, three of us ought to
stay back here. I mean, after all, we
have to protect Teacher. Of course we
will. I forgot.
He'll be needed. to help all the
survivors. Don't you agree?Sure. Uh,
where is he?I don't know. He was here
just now. HmmMaybe he took a
walk. Let's go see. Right.
Teacher! Teacher!
Teacher! Teacher!
Teacher!
Teacher! Teacher! Teacher! Teacher!
Teacher! Teacher!
Teacher! Teacher! Teacher!
Teacher! Teacher!
Teacher! Teacher!
Teacher!
Teacher! Teacher!
He's dead.
Killed himself. But why did he do it
though?Deezer!
Deezer!
Strange. No guards tonight.
Usually a lot here. I
like it. Be careful. Ride it.
Hold it! All right, you've got
me. So kill me. Brother,
it's me, Afong. Huh
You traitor, you spy.
Brother. Now, don't you brother me.
Brother. Listen,I'm tricking them.
Tricking?Right. And this way, I'll
get near the king. Otherwise, we
shall never get to him. Hmm
Well, we've got this far, though. I know
that. But still, you'll never
kill him. And why won't we?
He's too damn cunning. He'll trap you,
and that's for sure.
It's all right. I'll finish off this
traitor. No, listen, it's just a trick.
I'm faking. And I'm supposed to believe
that traitor. Brother, now
look, you have to trust me.
I tell you, I'm with you. I always have
been. I'm just waiting for a
chance to kill the king.
Brother, I lived
life as a Shaolin fighter. And now
I'll die like one. I beg you.
Trust me. It is true. Why haven't you
killed the king?Had no chance. Can't get
near him. He's too well guarded. But I'm
going to get him. Shall
we?And all dead brothers.
I shall avenge their death.
I know. I'll never rest. I'll
get him. I promise you.
Brother, I want revenge. Don't
deny me. Brother, don't trust him.
Wafong?Brother, I'll trust you.
I'll give you one more chance. And now we
want that tyrant. Where is he now?
At this hour. I think. In the tower.
Brother. Don't. Right.
Lead us. Right.
Come on. Shh.
Where is he?
Assassin! What the hell are you doing?
Assassin! You lousy, treacherous bastard
All right. Let's see you escape this
time! Damn you! Brother,
wait! You
stinking bastard I'm telling you,
I'm gonna kill you! Don't think so.
Because you're finished!
Now, the Shaolin men are all in the nets.
Brothers, right!
The
tyrant. Today, you'll die!
You're the one who's gonna die today!
Yikes!
With my sword-proof past, you've nochance!
Go on. Just try and get the king. Go on
that, right?
I have to admit that he's really learned
those lessons! Ohh
Now then, we'll see who dies! You...
You filthy tree dead! You're going to
die. The blade I used was poisoned.
And I've got my revenge.
Escape doesn't worry me. Brother,
you've done well.
Brother!
Buddha, I said our prayers.
We got revenge.
We really did it. We did it.
Brother.
Sorry. Sorry
I misjudged you. Brother, I
was wrong. I'm so sorry.
It was the only way that I knew.
or else would fail. I was sure.
Too many guards. That's why I...
You're a real Shaolin fighter.
Master, we succeeded. He...
He managed to get your revenge. When our
men died, I couldn't stand it.
My brothers just butchered like cattle.
I... I pretended to be a
spy to get a chance.
to get near that monster. But all my
friends who are killed now, what could
they have thought of me?I...
I'm sorry. My fault that they
died. Brother,
I'm sure they wouldn't blame you. I was
long. As you forgive me,
then I don't mind.
Brother! Brother!
Thank
you. Thank you. Brother! Brother!
Brother.
Now, you taught me what bravery
can mean.
You... you're a real Shaolin
fighter. You're a hero.
