[instrumental music]

Good evening.

Police continue to hunt for the murderers

of an elderly couple found slain in their home one month ago.

Police believe there is no connection to that case

and the bizarre triple slaying of three people

found near that same location.

In local news, two were killed and four wounded

when local bank robbers began threatening hostages..

[static]

What the..

[static]

[beeping]

No, no, no.

[chuckles] Don't be afraid.

This time it isn't one of your nightmares.

This one... was mine.

[screeching]

Where the hell are we?

Uh, we're coming to you live from outside

the Springwood Municipal Courthouse.

Uh, this is the scene of the pretrial hearing

of accused mass murderer, Fred Krueger.

The hopes and the fears of this terrorized community

ride on the evidence being presented

by prosecutor Michael Deeks.

(male #1) 'Victim number five'

'eight-year-old Virginia Cross.'

'This is how she looked when we found her.'

'And her four-year-old brother, Mike Cross.'

'He was found in this dumpster..'

'...a block away from his home.'

Victim number seven, six-year-old Bobby Doyle.

We were able to identify him

through his dental records

[chain rattling]

[sighs]

[man coughing]

[indistinct chattering]

(male #1) 'Those slides are the only remarks.'

That's all, Your Honor.

Attorney for the defense, do you wish to present

evidence for admission?

I do, Your Honor.

I have but one exhibit.

[indistinct chattering]

Due to new evidence, I've just recently been made aware of..

'...and move for dismissal of the case.'

- 'Dismissal?' - I protest, Your Honor!

You're out of order, Mr. Deeks.

'Counsels, approach the bench.'

[indistinct chattering]

The evidence presented to this court

was obtained during an illegal arrest.

Not in compliance with the Supreme Court's ruling

'on the rights of the accused.'

'With great regret, I must grant'

defense's motion to dismiss.

Your Honor, this man cannot be allowed to walk free.

Then he should have been read his rights

at the time of his arrest.

You screwed up and now he's free!

- Come on. - It's on your head!

[woman sobbing]

Excuse me.

Where the hell did he go?

After more children.

This isn't over. Not by a long shot.

[girls crying]

Looking at those slides... brings it all back.

Two years of hunting, chasing shadows..

And for what?

Look at them. Look at what he did to Merit.

'She doesn't eat, she doesn't sleep.'

Nothing resembling a normal life.

He took it... and I couldn't stop him.

- Daddy? - What, baby?

Will Freddy be back?

[girls sobbing]

You know... I almost shot him, Sarah.

So help me when I saw him near the girls

'I almost pulled the trigger.'

So what stopped you?

I don't want to hear about justice!

[sobbing] That bastard took my little girl.

You know, Michael, I had this funny idea

that the law was designed to protect us.

I've given my life to the law.

I've always believed in it... until today.

And if it fails like today

Well, then, it's our responsibility..

To be our own law.

Now, wait a minute, are you suggesting that we all

become a lynch mob here, Michael?

I'm all for giving a man a fair trial

but our stinking system wouldn't even let us get that far.

We take it from here.

Are you with me?

(all) Yeah.

- Yeah. Yeah. Let's go! - Come on, let's go.

Remember New York?

Remember, uh, 18 locks on the door?

Armed guards in schools?

Pushers, junkies, bums

everything imaginable on the streets

except decent people.

(Tim) 'Sarah, don't.'

Oh, but here we are in the land of white picket fences

and... and PTA meetings.

Mostly what we wanted was a decent life

for us and the girls.

You think I didn't want that?

What, are you like them?

'You think this is my fault?'

All I'm saying is that maniac is still loose on the streets.

When I saw what he was about to do to our girls..

I was too crazy to remember every stupid procedural detail.

I know, his rights.

What about Lisa's rights? What about Merit's rights?

She hasn't been the same since this happened.

Where do you think you're going?

much like waiting for Freddy to show up.

They're gonna find him.

This is just what we need right now.

A bunch of half-cocked vigilantes.

one man could make a difference.

'not by breaking it.'
