- It's snowing in May,
as everybody expected.

(chuckles) The weather
is so unpredictable here.

I think people think of Nevada,

and they don't think of this.

They think of the desert.

They think of flat sage brush landscape

between Las Vegas and Reno, here,

where this story takes place.

(suspenseful music continues)

What we actually have here,
aside from just the desert,

is the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

I don't think a lot of
people think about that.

They don't realize how close
Reno is to California border.

And Lake Tahoe, one of
the most famous places

in the world, really.

And people, myself included,

go out into those mountains all the time.

And I can honestly say that, you know,

aside from a bear sighting here or there,

or maybe some Burning
Man hippies (chuckles)

nothing that weird really
ever goes on up there.

It's a pretty peaceful area.

To receive footage in that area of...

I don't know, to be
honest, I really don't know.

I think it's potentially a
prank or a hoax, whatever.

And I think that's why Mike
wanted me to have the footage.

Was to see if I could sort
of debunk in a sense, maybe.

But anyway, what I did
view was shocking enough

to get me intrigued and...

And now I'm involved in this thing.

(suspenseful music continues)

I can honestly say that
the last thing I thought I'd

be doing this year would be setting out

into the Sierra Nevadas

(chuckles) this almost
sounds ridiculous to say,

making a Bigfoot documentary.

(thrilling music)

- Hey folks, my name is Michael Rock.

I'm coming to you from a
hotel room in Dallas, Texas,

where I'm at because of
some real world work stuff.

Little bit of background about myself.

I'm a former US Army Special
Forces Engineer sergeant,

also known as a Green Beret.

(propellers whipping loudly)

When I retired in 2014,

I started running these
military-based events.

They had to do with
endurance, survival skills,

military tactics, stuff like that.

(onlooker laughing) (machine gun blasting)

And here's where that comes into play.

So when I got back from
work today, I received an email.

"Mr. Rock, you've never met me,

"but hopefully you remember
my dad, Toma Smith.

"When you used to do your endurance

"and survival type events,
he did a couple of yours.

"He even did one of your
events with my mom, Melissa.

"He thought very highly
of you and talked about you

"and some of the stories that
you told him a bunch of times.

"I used one of those
people finder sites to find you

"and your email address.

"I did that to tell you my dad is missing.

"It happened a few years ago.

"It sounds pretty crazy,

"but I believe he was taken by something.

"Nobody aside from my mom believes me.

"A certain federal agency even told me

"'Never speak of it again."

"And I was told that my dad just

"didn't wanna be part
of your family anymore.

"I was scared to come
forward to anyone else,

"but I've waited long enough.

"If possible, would it be
okay to send you a package

"with some stuff showing
what happened to him?

"I don't have anybody else to turn to.

"Even my mom doesn't want
to help because she's afraid

"of the wrong people coming after us.

"Here are some pictures of you two together

"as well as him and my
mom to help you remember.

"Please help me find out
what happened to him.

"I need closure.

"Jaylin Smith."

So I remember the guy, he was a good dude.

I decided to record this because,

I mean, I just got an email.

Kid's dad disappeared, a guy that I knew.

So I don't know what's gonna happen.

So I'm gonna email him
back, give him my address,

see if he wants to talk
on the phone a little bit,

tell me what's going on.

And I get home in about four days.

So hopefully he can get the package to me,

and it's waiting for me when I get home.

And we're gonna take it from there.

All right.

(suspenseful music)

- I am Dillon Brown, the
director of a film called The Flock

that stars my friend Michael Rock.

Michael and I met while
we were casting the film.

He nailed his audition.

We hired him immediately.

And he and I became
friends throughout production,

and much more than just a director

and an actor working together.

We sort of linked up and became friends

in a much more almost brotherly way.

- [Mike] Come up, I'll be like.

- Do you wanna hit me with the knee first,

then I can spit the blood or whatever?

And then, or should we spit
the blood and then you shoot me?

How do you wanna do that?

- Dude's obviously pissed off.

Imma give you a chance
to tell us where the kids are.

- Gotcha.

- And then you can go home.

And then you just got,

you're gonna look down,
you're not gonna say shit.

- Okay. - Come up to you, boom.

- [Dillon] Yeah, there you go.

- Where are the kids?

(thunder rumbling)

(Mike chuckles)

(knee smashes) (Dillon groans)

(mouth spits)

Where are the kids?

- Hail, Moloch!

(mouth spits) (thunder rumbles)

- Gotcha.

(gunshot blasts)

Drinks are on me.

(camera buzzes)

(Mike chuckles)

- Can we cut? - Yeah.

- I hit my (bleeping) head hard. (laughs)

Mike has offered advice.

He has, he's been there for me.

He's helped this production a lot.

And we sort of just vibed, I guess.

We have the same
philosophies on a lot of things,

a lot of the same goals.

And it was very easy to
become friends with him.

So when Mike contacted
me just a few days ago

and was asking if I would be willing

to help him with a project,
I wanted to, absolutely.

But I'm a new dad.

Just brought a baby home about a month ago.

And time is just not on my side right now

in terms of having it.

- It is now the butt crack of dawn.

And I'm about to leave Dallas
and head out back to Reno.

So I talked to Jaylin a few days ago.

I gave him my address and stuff.

And he's gonna send me a package

with whatever he wants to send me.

Asked him a little bit more about his dad,

about what happened to him.

He said his dad went missing
from the Lake Tahoe area.

And his dad was

trying to find a Sasquatch named Tahoe Joe.

(Dillon sighs)

- There's such a war going
on inside me right now.

Because on the one hand when
Mike told me about the footage

and used the word Bigfoot
and specifically Tahoe Joe,

which is the name that many of the locals

around Lake Tahoe and that area call him,

(chuckles) it just made me start to laugh.

I don't believe in that at all.

I feel like with our encroachment
into nature constantly

and with cameras, everybody's got a camera

on him at all times,

how could we not have
had definitive proof by now?

It just doesn't seem plausible.

But then there's the
other side of me that says

Mike used the word
Bigfoot to describe footage

that he was mysteriously sent.

I mean, maybe we are
getting the opportunity

to bring the myth out
of the realm of fiction.

And I don't know how I could pass that up.

- Dillon said he had heard of Tahoe Joe,

but he didn't really know much.

So he was gonna find
out what he could find out,

and he was gonna get back to me.

So I will see you when I get back.

- [Mike] Hey, sorry to bother you.

Hey, so my name is Mike
and I'm doing a documentary.

- Okay.

- [Mike] Do you guys mind if
I ask you a couple questions?

- Depends on the questions.

- [Mike] Hey, so have you
guys ever heard of Tahoe Joe,

or a Sasquatch in the Sierra Nevadas?

- Ooh, totally.

Hey, we were on horses.

We were out up in South Lake area,

like four or five months ago.

And we're coming up
on this kind of dark area,

like a really thick wooded area.

And I ride a big ass thoroughbred,

so I'm pretty high off the ground.

And we stopped for a
sec to let the horses eat.

And I'm looking over to my right,

and I remember telling Troy,

"Hey, there's something over there."

And it was like this figure,

this shadowy figure that was tall.

And it was like I saw these,

I feel like I saw these
eyes like staring at me.

And I heard this weird, wasn't
a growl, it wasn't a shout.

It was some kind of noise.

And then the horses kind of spooked,

and we took off a little bit.

And I looked back and it was gone.

But dude, do you remember that?

I told you, I was like,
"It's freaking Bigfoot!"

- On our last camping
trip, we heard some rustling

in the bushes and trees behind us.

You know, he paid no attention to it.

Said it was nothing.

(somber violin music)

I swore I heard something,

that there was something there.

And you know, we turn our back for a second

and this big thing just
comes out and just grabs him.

Oh, you know, he just takes him.

And I go to the authorities
and they say that I'm crazy.

And they promised to
do a big investigation,

and then they just ended up saying

that I was dehydrated from the heat.

You know, I know what I saw.

(somber violin music continues)

- So one of the first things I
did once we decided we were

gonna start investigating
this thing, was kind of dig into

what are the locals
saying about this, right?

Does anybody have a first-hand
encounter, anything recent?

Are these like super old stories?

But I didn't really know where to go

because if you go to social media,

you're gonna get a whole
bunch of people chiming in.

And a lot of it's gonna just be people

who wanna bullshit you.

But as somebody who spends
a lot of time in the outdoors,

I decided to start checking
out some of the hunting threats,

especially one in particular,
which is a Northern Nevada

and Northern California mule deer group.

These are all hunters who
go out, they swap stories,

or they talk about areas
where they've been,

maybe where they've
seen big bucks, whatever.

So I figured why not start there?

Why not post,

"Hey, has anybody ever
experienced anything weird

"or crazy out in the Sierra Nevadas?

And of course I got a lot of responses,

bunch of ridiculous responses.

But then one guy sent me
a link in a private message

through that forum.

And he basically just said,

"I shot this couple of months ago."

I'm assuming June, July of last year,

just based on like what the
trees and everything look like.

And so anyway, he sent me two clips.

I'm gonna show you both
of them in their raw form.

I'll play 'em.

And then I have gone in, I've zoomed in,

I've tried to clean up as much as I can

to get a better look at what he shot.

(grass crunching)

- [Cameraman] Whoa, what the fuck.

- So as you can see,

we've got something
hunched down by the tree,

and then it abruptly stands up.

And then actually looks
like it scampers off.

Now I have, plenty of times
I've seen footage of black bears

standing up on their back leg.

So that's not anything out of the ordinary.

What concerns me is how
this one turns on two feet

and then runs away on two feet.

And then the second one
with whatever it is walking by,

is the one that really caught my attention

because that one walks
much more like a man.

So, I don't know.

I will say that the footage definitely

is intriguing and it's
convincing if it is real.

So anyway, I told Mike about it.

I said, "Hey, this guy sent me some stuff.

"This is actually not
that far from, you know,

"where it seems like Jaylin
Smith's dad went missing."

And I told him it was
probably shot last year,

but it's definitely worth taking a look at.

And so I sent it to him.

All he wrote back was, "If
that footage has you excited,

"wait until you see what
I got from Jaylin Smith."

(suspenseful music)

- Right, so I just got home from Dallas.

When I got home, I found this
envelope sitting on the table.

Kids got it from the mail.

So Jaylin Smith.

I blacked out the actual street address

just so nobody goes and creeps on the kid.

It's Bigfoot news articles.

Yeah, just flew in from BWI Airport.

Flew into Reno, went
ahead, got my rent-a-car,

and decided to drive
out here to Lake Tahoe.

Been out here a couple
times looking for Tahoe Joe,

and I couldn't find him.

But the other day I read a
couple blogs that Tahoe Joe

was possibly seen in the
Buck Lake area of Lake Tahoe.

So that's the whole
reason why I'm out here.

Right now, I think I'm gonna go ahead

and grab something to eat
'cause I am hungry, long flight.

Check into my hotel and then

see what I can find tomorrow morning.

Finally made it.

Lake area of Lake Tahoe.

I'm out here looking for Tahoe Joe.

I know your mom and everybody's

been giving me a lot of
crap about him not existing,

but I am out here on a mission to find him.

I will find him.

In the event something happens
in the next couple of days,

please download these
videos, which will be uploaded

to the cloud and send
them to the authority.

Imma find him.

I'm in the Buck Lake area.

And while walking, I heard branches break,

and for some reason I felt
that I was being followed.

So I went ahead and doubled back.

And as I doubled back, I
came across some footprints.

Or it appears to be footprints.

So what I'm about to do
is place my foot in here

to show you the size of the footprint.

And as you can see,
I'm a size 14 and a half.

This has got to be at least a 18-19.

This is huge.

Right now, Imma go ahead
and try to map this out,

see what my next destination will be.

heading over to McKinney Lake.

I think I found some more
evidence linking us to Tahoe Joe.

So I'll update you when I get there.

It was a pain in the ass

Couldn't find anything, no evidence.

But I did find some footprints,
and in Buck Lake area,

which is promising.

So, you know, we'll

So played back the footage,
that sure in hell wasn't a bear.

I am 100% convinced
that that was Tahoe Joe.

Without a doubt.

It's getting dark out here,

and I can't be out here chasing anything.

So Imma go ahead and set up camp,

start fresh in the morning.

No doubt about it, that
was Tahoe Joe, no doubt.

Made it to base camp.

Think Imma go ahead and set up my tent,

grab something to eat, relax a little bit.

I am super pumped.

The amount of evidence that I was able

to obtain these past couple
days, I'm super excited.

Jaylin, when I get back to DC tomorrow,

we're gonna prove to the
world that Tahoe Joe does exist.

Super pumped.

Right now, think I'm, like I said,

- So I'm pretty sure I just saw footage

of my friend getting murdered.

I went and uploaded 'em to the cloud.

Dillon told me about
some footage that he got,

and it sounded...

It sounded kind of similar to what I saw.

So I told him to go ahead
and take a look at the footage

that I uploaded, see what he thinks of it.

I've been reading these
articles that Jaylin sent me,

and I don't know.

I don't know, man.

All right, so just got off
the phone with Jaylin Smith.

I told him that I got with
Dillon, and I showed him

all the video footage of
his dad that he sent me.

I also told Jaylin that while
Dillon is a little skeptical,

which is completely understandable,

Dillon does want to go out there with me.

So we're gonna go investigate and see if we

could find any evidence
of what happened to Toma.

See if we could find us a
Sasquatch named Tahoe Joe.

And when I told Jaylin this,

he was really excited about it,

and he actually asked
if he can come out here

and help us investigate.

So after talking with
Dillon, we both agreed.

Why not, right?

It's his dad, so why not?

So I bought him a plane ticket.

So in a handful of days,
Jaylin's gonna come out here

and join us for an adventure.

- [Dillon] So we are
picking up Jaylin Smith today

from the Reno airport.

I'm with Mr. Michael Rock.

And I guess the only
way to really start this

is to say that I watched the
footage that Mike sent me,

and I don't really know.

I don't know, we'll see
what you think about it first.

- Yeah, I get it, man. (chuckles)

Some of the footage is
pretty hokey, you know.

So I can see where you're skeptical,

but I don't know, man.

Like I said, I knew the guy.

He was a pretty good dude and I don't know.

Why would, why would he be making that up?

- Yeah, I mean, and I totally get that.

I think...

I think my hangup is not
really the footage itself.

I mean, it's disturbing, right?

I mean, whatever that was that got him

in the tent or whatever,
that is disturbing.

And I'm not gonna lie,
that was hard to watch.

Do I personally think it was a bear attack?

Yeah.

But I think my biggest
problems with it is he seems

so like eager to make
questionable decisions.

I don't know, it's just like the guy seems

to have like all this trust that nothing

was ever gonna hurt him out there.

But some of these other stories
and things that we've heard

from people were very much on the side

of they were terrified, you know?

And he just doesn't seem scared at all.

So, I don't know, I don't know.

I don't know, you know
him better than I do.

So maybe the wilderness
training had him prepared.

- Well see, the thing
is like, and that's it.

Like he didn't really have
much wilderness training,

you know?

But also you think about it, right?

So think about bear
hunters and deer hunters

and stuff like that. - Yeah.

- You know, what they
do is they'll sit there,

and they'll put themselves
in that animal's environment.

- Yeah, absolutely.

- You know, just so the
animal is more comfortable

with them being there and
doesn't get spooked by a human.

And kind of lets their
guard down, you know?

So I'm thinking maybe that
was his thought process,

but I don't know.

- Yeah, and I'll give you credit for that

'cause I do deer hunt,
I've bear hunted before.

I've done a lot of that stuff.

So you're right.

You know, it's dangerous or
you're out there with them,

you don't necessarily wanna
leave the area they're at

because if that's where they are,

that's where you're gonna see 'em.

So yeah, it's just, I don't know, I...

You would think, it just
plays out so perfectly

it seems like, you know?

He's got all this areas of where he is gone

and then he finds a footprint, you know?

And then it's like I'm watching the footage

where he's recording himself,

and he's jotting notes down
or something in that atlas.

And there's clearly something behind him,

like something moves in the
bushes behind him or whatever,

and then he doesn't see it.

And then next thing you know,

there's like noises outside
and then there's a tent attack.

So as a guy who writes
or directs horror movies,

like that's literally how I
would set up a horror movie,

you know, sequentially.

So to me it just felt a little bit set up.

I don't know, I don't want to discredit it.

And this kid is coming
out here because he truly,

truly believes it.

And honestly, where I really come from,

like wanting to do this,

it has nothing to do
with the Bigfoot angle,

but if this helps a kid like find his dad,

you know what I mean? - Yeah, yeah.

- Like that's the most
important part about this.

So like maybe that's where this documentary

ends up turning into.

We find a missing person or a body.

- Yeah, you know, give
the kid some closure maybe.

Hopefully, you know.

Do I think it's an actual Bigfoot?

I doubt it. (chuckles)

- All right, he just got off the plane,

I don't believe for one minute that Bigfoot

killed this kid's dad, but I mean,

Mike's picking him up from the airport

like literally right now.

- It's very, it's very stressful.

and hopefully relax a little bit.

- All right, so I'm just gonna go ahead

and tackle that big elephant in the room.

So I've seen pictures of you before.

You didn't have that thing in your throat.

What happened?

- Well, a couple years back roughly,

I decided to go on my own to find my dad

'cause he was missing and
no one else would believe me.

So on the night where I found my father,

tried to find my father, I'm in the woods.

I look up and I see
something, and I start running.

And I look up, I get
stabbed by this branch.

I fall to the ground, wake up momentarily.

A few moments later, I'm in the hospital.

See the doctor.

Doctor's saying to me you
have vocal cord paralysis,

which is a condition
where like the vocal cords

in your throat are paralyzed
and they have the ability,

they have the inability
to move or function,

which is now I'm unable to
breathe throughout my nose.

I have weakened lung
capacity now due to that.

And that's how I have
the thing in my throat now.

(camera beeps)

- All right, so what we're gonna do now

is we're heading up to the
trail head in the area where

your dad disappeared at and
where you searched for him.

We're just gonna get a feel for things.

And then tomorrow, tomorrow we're gonna

actually start our adventure.

We're gonna have multiple cameras.

I have my drone that I named Squatch 1,

so it's gonna be our eyes in the sky.

And...

Hey, didn't you say that
that guy that sent you

that footage, he's gonna come out too?

- [Dillon] Yeah, Shane, I
think is what his name is.

He...

I don't know, he claims
that he knows like literally

exactly where that is out
where Toma put his tent up.

Said he's been in the
woods for so many years

that it looked super familiar to him.

So I'm hoping we can trust him, you know.

But he's a dude from the internet,

so you know how that goes.

Jaylin, just on a personal note,

I wanted to thank you
for allowing us to see

that footage and trusting us with it.

I did watch it and like
my condolences to you

and your family because that was hard.

But we're doing this because Mike

totally believes in your story,

and he was friends with your dad.

And I know that I'm gonna come across

as like the skeptical one
here that maybe doesn't

believe in Bigfoot or whatever,

but I do 100% believe in good people.

And you seem like good people.

And I just, I know how hard
it must be to not be believed,

to be carrying this burden.

And we want to do everything
we can to get your guys' story

out there and hopefully get some answers,

you know, to give you guys some peace.

So I just had to tell you that

before we can go on any further.

Over the past couple of years
since my dad's been missing,

the only person that's ever helped me out

in this traumatic time is my mother.

And I've turned to, you named it.

You name it, I turned to it.

Firefighters, police
officers, friends, family.

And the only reason why I
even heard of my dad's friend

was me actually coming out
here telling you guys my story.

So I appreciate that, means a lot

coming from me and my mother.

We seriously thank you

Has your dad always been a Bigfoot believer

or was this something like new?

I mean, I just, maybe a
little backstory on him.

- Well, yeah, dating back to
like even when I was younger,

he was actually a
Bigfoot believer, you know.

I used to go on trips with
him every now and then

to go see whether the beast exists or not.

And he would, if I'm not out
there one day he would tell me

where he was at or how
long will it be out there for.

And he would come back
home and be with me and his,

be with me and my mother.

You know, be a good family guy.

But after this past trip,

when I realized he's not coming back,

I started getting worried about him.

You know, where is he?

Is he okay, is he eating?

Is he drinking water?

God forbid something happening to him,

so that's why I had to go by myself to see

if I can find any remains, him,

something that would give me closure.

lost my life looking for him.

I just felt like I wasted your

I can't help but think
that somehow all of this

is connected to something
larger on a broader scale.

Somebody sent me a video
coming out of the Lake Tahoe region

out near Nevada, if any of
you are familiar with that.

They have a series of attacks
that have occurred lately.

A couple.

Hmm, couple more missing people.

Of all things, more missing people.

(suspenseful music)

- [Mike] Hey, excuse me.

Hey, my name is Mike, and
I'm making a documentary.

Do you mind if I ask
you a couple questions?

- I guess.

- [Mike] So have you
ever heard of Tahoe Joe

or the Sasquatch in the
Sierra Nevada Mountains?

- (laughs) No.

Dude, is this like your way
of picking up on girls or?

- [Mike] No, no, no.

It's serious questions.

- Yeah, man.

Bugger off.

(suspenseful music continues)

- So we were in South Lake Tahoe,

and I wanted to go on a hike

and kind of catch the sunset,
you know, over the ridge.

And as we're hiking up, I saw these tracks.

Big, huge footprints.

It's like, man, that's gotta
be Tahoe Joe, you know?

And so obviously we, you know,
decided to follow the tracks.

And as we're going up, going up,

and to get, you know,
kind of close to the ridge,

there's this huge, huge figure.

You know, this big thing.

And I was like, man, I was
like, "That can't be a bear."

I was like, "Gotta be Tahoe Joe.

"It's gotta be Tahoe Joe."

- Guy was also an idiot,
so it was probably a bear.

(Josh sighs)

(suspenseful music)

- [Troy] I don't know, man.

Still think it might
have been a bear to me.

'Cause we were pretty stoned.

- [Rene] Whatever, dude.

We weren't that bad.
