I started going more into a spiritual realm,

trying to find answers to why I couldn't let go of this person.

And I kept hearing this thing called Twin Flames. Twin Flames. Twin Flames.

I'd never heard of it. I've heard of soulmates. Never heard of Twin Flames.

So I clicked on the link. Why not? You know.

[Alice] I've written a lot about how love is evolving

with the new ways people are trying to relate to each other today.

I was on Reddit looking for story ideas.

I was reading about different spiritual communities,

and I came across posts about this group called Twin Flames Universe.

So I joined the Facebook group of Twin Flames Universe,

where a lot of people are gathering,

and the level of obsession just really blew me away.

It seems like a cool spiritual community from all over the world,

sharing tips to fall in love.

There was clearly a lot of adoration around the two founders, Jeff and Shaleia,

who say that they have a unique connection and channel to God.

Jeff and Shaleia literally say,

"God told us who your perfect partner is, and we will help you find them."

I knew I had found the idea for my next article.

[Arcelia] I was working at a gas station in the center of New York State

in the middle of nowhere.

People are very conservative, very redneck-y.

I was feeling very alone.

Ever since I was a kid, I've always been an extremely spiritual person.

It's a fundamental part of who I am.

Tarot can really save people's fucking lives.

December 2016, going into 2017, I made my New Year's resolution.

I'm going to fall in love for the first time.

I'm going to let somebody in for the first time.

And then a month later, that's how I met my twin flame.

I got to know this person, who is nothing like me,

somebody I shouldn't be attracted to. I'm a trans woman.

The last thing a trans woman should be into

is a guy from a conservative, middle of nowhere, country background.

He was kind of coming on to me, but without words,

you know, when somebody who's shy really is into you,

and they're trying to like, get you to notice them.

I mean, imagine being in his shoes.

Being in a conservative area and actually being into a trans woman

and trying to reach out to me and get to me,

but being scared that I might not receive that.

Why do I feel connected to a person like this? Like, this just isn't me.

I don't want to be involved with somebody like that.

I ended up searching online for... What is this? What is going on?

And I stumble across the term "twin flames."

The fuck are twin flames?

[Alice] A twin flame is like a super spiritual soulmate,

someone who is actually the other half of your soul.

So there's this divine component to it,

where this connection that you have with your twin flame

supposedly continues across multiple lifetimes,

and it's an idea that's really gaining currency.

Megan Fox says that Machine Gun Kelly is her twin flame.

And actually Ryan Gosling had to file a restraining order

against a fan who was convinced that he was her twin flame and was stalking him.

[Lorraine] It sort of made sense because it described a lot of the things

that I was feeling towards this guy,

you know, this irrational connection towards someone.

And they seem like this other part of you that you can't let go of.

And why shouldn't there be someone who is the exact partner that I seek?

Why should that not be available in the world?

[Arcelia] I just want the one, you know what I mean?

Why have all the bullshit when you could just have the one person?

[Alice] I think people are searching for greater meaning in their dating life,

and Twin Flames Universe is responding to that by giving people meaning and love.

[Carly] My family life was not very good growing up.

My biological mom left me at 11 years old,

and then my stepmom came in with a ruling force.

Yeah, I've been through a lot of trauma, but it's what has made me me.

But with a kind of spiritual New Age spin.

The first time we ever made love,

I cried for maybe 30 to 60 minutes straight.

[Alice] These videos would have 10, 20, sometimes even 100,000 views.

So clearly, this was striking a chord among some people on the Internet.

We get in front of the camera, and we share these concepts of twin flames.

- [Shaleia] Well, let's just keep walking. - [Jeff] But we want to share who we are,

so you can see what it is we're like in real life.

Like that.

[Lorraine] These are two people that seem to have it together,

that seem to understand their love for each other,

and seem to have accomplished something that I'm seeking, you know?

But really what drove me wasn't necessarily the idea of a partner.

It was the fact that a lot of their teachings were based on self-development

and trying to first seek yourself,

and the partner would be the consequence.

You become really strong,

you become really sharp, you get a really joyful life.

So that's the ultimate focus of the lifestyle that we're sharing.

And when you liberate yourself to follow your heart,

you're liberating others around you.

and I got hoards of people sort of love bombing me.

We have been waiting for you." And I'm like, "Oh, my gosh, this is it."

You know, this is where I'm meant to be. Started going to online video sessions.

[Arcelia] I was stuck in a state of limerence.

I was obsessively trying to mend this connection and bring this together.

November 2017, I joined the classes.

Let go of everything else, and we're here to do the work of the day.

Sometimes, the teachers would focus on one person and do inner work on them.

When I was younger, I was bullied a lot,

and I used to have this overwhelming feeling, like I didn't belong.

We would get into all sorts of things.

You know why your relationship with your dad is bad?

Because I hold a lot of shit against him still.

Topics that weren't necessarily relevant to Twin Flames.

By the way, your dad actually loves you.

He just doesn't understand how to love you.

[Arcelia] Jeff and Shaleia's work and this part of their community

did help me heal self-confidence issues I had.

And I thought, "Great."

My name is Eric Rogers, and I'm here today because Jeff Ayan was my best friend.

We were born and raised in Michigan in a small town called Lapeer.

Jeff and I went to the same middle school and high school together.

He was the class jokester for sure.

I met him in eighth grade science class, and we were basically best friends,

starting from that point forward.

I was completely enamored with him right off the bat.

His charisma was off the charts.

We met in Drama Club, and I was just like,

"Who is this person, and how can I be in his orbit?"

He loved love.

Being with Jeff was like being in a John Hughes movie,

and I was Molly Ringwald, and he was Judd Nelson,

fist pumping the air at the end of the film.

[Eric] I don't think he knew exactly what he wanted to do,

but the style of life he wanted to live,

he was very into investing, becoming self-sustaining financially.

It was a huge focus of his.

He wanted to build something of his own, but he didn't,

at least at that point in time, have an exact idea of what that was.

After he graduated college, we were just talking one day,

and he said, "I'm going to move to Hawaii!

And I'll figure out what I'm going to do when I get out there."

He started a travel blog called Ender's Adventures.

Jeff absolutely loved Ender's Game, the Orson Scott Card novel.

I think that's where the inspiration for Ender's Adventures came from.

Then he started going a bit further with it.

He wanted to do life and career coaching, which at this point, as a 25 year old...

[laughing] What are you... What do you think...

What meaningful career advice do you have to give?

But that was Jeff, it wasn't going to stand in his way.

He was all in and really interested and felt like he had

a lot to share with the world.

There were a couple of name changes, which was a little bit strange.

There would be a Facebook post that would go out from Jeff

and said, "Okay, I thought long and hard, and I'm changing my name

to Jeffrey Ayanethos," adding ethos to the end of his last name.

A couple of months would go by, and he said,

"Okay, my one true name is Ender Ayanethos."

And then some more time went by, and he said,

"Okay, my one true name given by Divine Mother,

the only name that I will answer to is Shafira Ayanethos.

What's up, it's Shafira Ayanethos.

At this point, he also had, you know, hair down to his back.

He would sometimes tie it up in a ponytail. He looked like Greek Jesus.

[vocalizing]

[Ellen] He was doing whatever he was doing out there.

And one day, he messaged me to tell me about this girl that he met,

and he thought that she was the one.

- Hi, I'm Ender Ayanethos. - Hi, I'm Shaleia Plante.

[Alice] Jeff and Shaleia met online through a mutual friend

and later started dating.

Shaleia was living in Sedona, and Jeff came to join her there.

And they started making these videos about their relationship.

The second I saw Ender, it was just like, I knew...

everything in my whole body knew like, "Oh, yeah, this is so right." [laughs]

I truly believe that when they met, they thought they were perfect for each other.

And it was like there was a spark.

I feel so blessed and so honored and so lucky to have met this woman

and to be with this woman and have such an intimate connection with Shaleia.

Yeah.

Shaleia is originally from Canada, and she was born Megan Plante.

As someone who's very much a spiritual seeker,

I think she was looking to find a more true identity

than the one that had kind of been given to her by her parents.

[William] Megan was raised Catholic.

She would go through the motions, and she would want to believe,

in part because we believed, her mother especially was a very devout Catholic.

When Madeline and I divorced, Megan was about ten.

And then when I immigrated to the United States, Megan was about 12.

And so I became a distant father. It was very, very difficult.

And when her mom died from cancer, Megan was about 15.

[Angela] Having lost her mom, having had challenging relationships

with her biological family, she was always looking for the other side of herself.

I became aware of twin flames about five or six years ago,

and that's when I knew in my heart of hearts that that was what I wanted.

I desired a soul to soul union.

I know she believed that Jeff is her twin flame.

I know that she believes that with every fiber of her being,

I can see it on her face.

There was a sense of, from her at least, magic.

Our love is very spiritual. It's very true. It's very real.

- It's beyond earthly love. - Shaleia later joined Jeff in Hawaii,

and they started this blog called Awakened Intimacy.

When we have sex, we go really deep with our sex,

and it becomes extraordinarily intimate and loving.

And what happens is, the rest of our life, a whole lot of stuff

- starts to happen on the outside... - Hmm.

...because so much is happening on the inside.

- Mm-hmm. - So what we found out

when we were doing card readings and talking to Divine Mother

is that our sex is a tool for our ascension.

Jeff appeared to change a lot after meeting Shaleia.

He never knew about Twin Flames before her,

so she introduced him to this idea that became his whole identity.

As you deepen your connection with your twin flame,

you will begin to see that there is no limit to the depth

the two of you can achieve.

[Alice] When they came together, it was really this lightning-in-a-bottle moment,

where I think Jeff saw an opportunity to scale his business,

and Shaleia saw an opportunity to get her spiritual practices to more people.

His gifts, talents, and skills

complement my gifts, talents and skills, and they merge together as one.

And boom, there is a vision, there is a mission.

[Catrina] We met them on the precipice of deciding to be together,

and it was really nice to hear somebody from the outside

take a look in and validate what we were getting ready to do with our lives.

Anne and I met in 1997. We were both in college.

I was at Wesleyan, and she was at Mercer.

There was a feeling when I was close to her that was indescribable.

[Anne] Catrina and I had had this deep,

I would almost say metaphysical-type connection,

which I had not experienced with anyone else, and I couldn't really explain.

[Catrina] We both had made attempts to come out,

and we both had resigned not to go down that road,

and we both ended up in heterosexual relationships.

And over the course of 20 years,

we had these moments where we would connect,

but nobody had the courage to say it.

I realized that even though I had tried to let that go,

and I just never had. I just really wanted to tell her my truth

[Catrina] Anne called me and essentially professed her love for me.

I was pregnant with my second child and I was like, "Hold on."

[Anne] We were aware that we loved each other, but we were still trying to figure out

what we were going to do to move forward, if anything.

And so I was looking up, just researching for my own sake,

like, what is it with me and my connection with romance

that maybe is a little dysfunctional?

And that's when I stumbled across some videos by Jeff and Shaleia.

We were sure, you can relax.

We just have so much to share with the world.

You're stepping into a new arena of success.

Anne had purchased some FaceTime with them that included a couple of meetings.

You are strong because of what I gave to you.

But without me, we could not have done that.

Then they did a meditation with us, and at the end of the meditation,

they pronounced us in harmonious twin flame union.

Twin flame union is out there on the internet, like lots of people use that.

But the harmonious twin flame union was their extra special twin flame union.

[Catrina] We were getting ready to blow up our lives,

and it was a breath of fresh air to have someone from the outside

look in and go, "You know what? This is who you are. Go for it. Take the leap."

That was probably something that we were craving from any place we could get it.

[Anne] They were like, "We have this group on Facebook.

You might be interested in helping out,

you know, like you guys have achieved something.

There's other people that are hurting for this particular thing that you've done."

[Catrina] It was very small in the beginning,

and they were adding more and more people to the community.

And more and more people were showing up to these meetups.

From April, when we recognized each other as twin flames, I was moved out...

We were moved in together in August,

like with kids, like we have between us,

like five kids, two baby daddies, me, a marriage.

- Like no jobs. - [Jeff] Yeah?

- Neither one of us had jobs. - [Jeff] Yeah.

[laughing]

[Alice] Jeff and Shaleia don't just say, "We're matchmakers.

Like, we might help you find someone."

And I think it was a time in her life

where she just had a lot of questions, more questions than answers,

which is typical of a 20-something year old.

I guess she always felt something was missing in her life.

She started looking on the Internet for soulmates,

and that kind of thing and came across Twin Flames Universe.

I asked her, "Are there counselors?

What kind of credentials do the counselors have?

[Cheryl] I'm in cybersecurity, so I started to do some research online.

I reached out to every asset that I had available, every platform,

and I started to get concerned.

Once you clear your way, all the way deep down,

to the core of the essence of who you are,

only then are you open to harmonious twin flame union.

"Guys, this is something we really need to take seriously.

There is no stopping me or us.

And she was encouraged strongly to pursue him aggressively.

I took work off for the whole week and booked an AirBnb in Maine,

where I know he either lives or lives very close to.

That's my man. This is my HTFU.

And I claim it completely.

If it is in your heart to claim your twin flame,

- it is your responsibility to claim them. - Right.

If you think it should be in their heart, you're wrong.

It's in yours. Claim.

[Alice] One of the things I learned about Twin Flames Universe

is that people are encouraged to cross other's boundaries.

People are joining who like just went through a breakup,

like they're still in love with somebody.

They've often been like rejected by their partner.

And so what Jeff and Shaleia will say is,

"No, God told us that that person who broke up with you,

that's your twin flame. You need to pursue them.

Like you need to show your love."

By letting them get away, you're choosing separation.

You're talking a lot, but you're not really taking any action.

Does anything you say matter if you take no action?

Is that who you are? As someone who doesn't matter and doesn't take action?

[Arcelia] The energy was there to be more of the aggressor,

because one of the things you see a lot in Twin Flames is a push-pull dynamic,

where the twin flame is a runner, and the other one would be a chaser.

I don't want to feel like I'm sexually harassing though.

He's a gamer dude. You're a hot girl.
